Next up this Friday, we take a look at the Sky Sports game, assessing the recent run of Man of the Match (MoTM) awards and bonus point beneficiaries before casting an eye over the Scout team and our future plans.

Gameweek 23 Man of the Match Awards

Listed below are the players that caught the eye of the Sky Sports reporters from last weekend’s fixtures achieving the Man of the Match award (worth an additional five points).

FixtureMoTM
Aston Villa vs Crystal PalaceJoleon Lescott
Bournemouth vs Weat HamDimitri Payet
Newcastle vs Man UnitedWayne Rooney
Chelsea vs West BromDarren Fletcher
Man City vs EvertonTim Howard
Southampton vs WatfordShane Long
Stoke vs NorwichJoselu
Swansea vs SunderlandJermain Defoe
Liverpool vs ArsenalOlivier Giroud
Tottenham vs LeicesterRobert Huth

One goalkeeper, two defenders, two midfielders and five forwards earned the awards last week. Early-season favorite Dimitri Payet seems to have picked up where he left off and with a decent run of fixtures, I expect his 8.7% ownership to rise once again. Wayne Rooney, Jermain Defoe and Olivier Giroud haven’t been popular selections amongst active players but with 34, 44 and 43 points picked up respectively in their last six Gameweeks, they are certainly putting pressure on the template forwards.

Gameweek 23 Bonus Points

Just two goalkeepers collected bonus this week. Kasper Schmeichel and Tim Howard were the men in question and the Toffees shot stopper picked up a tasty 14-point haul for shutting out Man City and picking up the MoTM gong. Jack Butland and Petr Cech lead the way for keepers with 14 bonus apiece.

In defence, 11 players grabbed bonus, nine for tackles and four for passes completed. Centre-backs Fabricio Coloccini and Philipp Wollscheid were the two to pick up both for their all-action displays. Cesar Azpilicueta, Erik Pieters and Simon Francis are top bonus magnets with 16 each.

In midfield, there were 11 beneficiaries in total: four for tackling and nine for passes. Muhamed Besic and Yann M’Vila were the two to pick up both, thanks to deep-lying roles for their respective teams. Cesc Fabregas is the game’s highest bonus earner overall with 32 points so far.

Arsenal forward Joel Campbell was the only frontman to pick up bonus after putting in a hard-working shift and making five tackles in the 3-3 draw at Liverpool.

Fantasy Football Scout members can access all information regarding bonus points using player stats and clicking the Sky Sports tab.

Watchlist

Here I aim to highlight a few differential players with low ownership that I think could be good options for the next six fixtures. These will be looking at three specific price brackets to cater for our available budget. These names evolve with fixtures and form and offer fantasy managers a nudge in hopefully the right direction.

BudgetMid-PricePremium
Defender Miguel Britos, 4.2m, 0.2%Aaron Cresswell, 6.2m, 6.2% Phil Jagielka, 6.8m, 4%
MidfielderMichail Antonio, 5.5m, 0.1%Gylfi Sigurdsson, 7.1m, 3.2% Roberto Firmino, 8m, 1.9%
Forward Benik Afobe, 6.3m, 0% Enner Valencia, 7.7m, 0.2%Diego Costa, 9.8m, 6.4%

My Team

Gomes
Cathcart Dawson Nyom
Ramsey Mahrez Payet De Bruyne
Aguero© Lukaku Kane

ITB: 1.1m
Transfers remaining: 16/40
Last week’s points: 39
Overall points: 1196
Rank: 3,570

Notes
Like most, it was fairly tragic week for my team, although thanks to the efforts of my new acquisition Dimitri Payet (14) and old favorite Aaron Ramsey (10), I jumped up the rankings by around 1,000 places. Points seem to be extremely hard to come by at present but with no stand-out options, I feel it’s best to sit tight and consolidate transfers rather than make rash decisions.

My triple Watford defence has been disappointing of late and Craig Cathcart was dropped in midweek, so I may be forced into a change eventually. With Swansea and Newcastle up next for the Hornets, though, I’ll make the call after those two fixtures.

Captain Plan
Sergio Aguero is my captain for Saturday’s round of matches – although he continues to toil, I feel the goals have to come eventually.

A swap to Aaron Ramsey on Sunday is my route as the Gunners travel to the Britannia. This isn’t the smartest maneuver as it means having only one captain the week after, so if you happen to have any Liverpool or United players, its probably best you pick that option. Roberto Firmino or Wayne Rooney could be the best alternatives in light of current form.

Possibly an even better option, however, is looking at Monday night’s clash at the Liberty Stadium, which sees Swansea take on Watford. The Hornets feature in Matchday one in Gameweek 25 at home to Newcastle, so if you’re lucky enough to own Odion Ighalo, he’s surely the best way to navigate this tricky week.

The Fantasy Football Scout League

Once again, we’re running our own Fantasy Football Scout League this season and are sitting in first place in the rankings at present. With a £1000 prize to the winner, you’d be mad not to get involved. To join, visit Sky Sports Fantasy Football and key in League Name: FFScout, League Code: 8009000.

The Fantasy Football Club

This Friday The Fantasy Football Club show, where you can catch new host Max Rushden and Paul Merson at 18:00 SkySports 1 HD where they will be discussing the upcoming week’s Fantasy Football.

On what basis are people recommending Swansea defence? Because they're at home?
Last two EPL games and the cup game they have been abject - plus the recent clean sheets were against a injury stricken West Ham, low scoring WBA, and strikerless Crystal Palace

decent upcoming fixtures, previous seasons have always been solid defensively and had three clean sheets on the bounce.

I'm looking at the Sunderland game as a freak result given they had a player sent off.

    Who to bench...
    A. Lukaku (che)
    B. Ighalo (swa)
    C. Ozil (sto)

Wanna play Mahrez and Alli due to easy fixtures, so have to bench one of these... Currently thinking of benching B...

No, very few people do. But when all is said and done, teams either get promoted for a reason, or they don't. As outlined below, the one ASSUMPTION that I DO make, is that I accept the league standings as true and fair.

Of course it is. Your opinion is that a straight pro rata gives fair results. That's no more or less valid than multiplying by 38/52 or 38/60.

This isn't a criticism, just an observation.

No, that is NOT my opinion, just the facts on the ground. YOUR opinion holds that there should be an adjustment for YOUR perception of an increase in difficulty.

I could argue about that as well, but I am not very interested.

I just look at goals scored, goals conceded, games won and lost, and therefore points earned, and league rankings achieved.

The ONLY assumption that I make is that the leagues do not lie, and that therefore, the teams are there on merit.

If you have your last 5 years' tickers , why don't you note down the average difference between the first and final ratings for the newly promoted sides and subtract the difference? That wont be opinion based , would it?

No, but it would be a huge amount of effort, based on opinion, which I can tell you, from this experiences, is, in MY OPINION, unwarranted by any small increase in accuracy - if indeed there would be such an increase.

Every year, the same people refuse to buy players from promoted sides. Every year, the same people stampede on week 3 to get in Francis, or Cathcart, or whoever.

Most of the years 2/3 of the promoted clubs get relegated......but fair enough if this has worked for your ticker in the past , who am I to question it? All your other 17 ratings are a work of art imo 🙂

                          (Yes , its my opinion 😛 )

Tbf, your model is your opinion. I am not saying it is wrong, just that any formula I come up with will be my opnion on what calculates form and pedigree effectively,. Same with yours. How do we know the formaula is correct?

It isn't my opinion, it is just a set of calculations which I apply to ALL teams equally..

If my calculations are wrong, or misguided, it is up to you to provide a better model.

I am not wedded to this calculations, and indeed, I have tweaked them this Season. I am very happy for them to be improved - SO LONG AS THE RESULTS WARRANT ANY EFFORT.

I always find your numbers useful. Not arguing its correctness or wrongfulness.

It's just that a model which adds/subtracts etc is always an opinion of who made it. Just as TM has his own model. I can't say whose is better, but both are their author's respective OPINIONS of what should be a reasonable model.

P.S. Still love your numbers. 😉

So the strong is essentially all the better teams in the league (at present). The weak the lesser sides.

This seems to favour form over anything so difficult to predict swings in form (which often is due to easier fixtures)

So can someone help my logic here?

Noone in my ML has Aguero or Payet, all have Kane. (I have all 3) Im assuming most will captain Kane, top 3 within 5 points apart (me included)

Is it a smart move to (c)Payet in this situation to try pull ahead? Or is simply owning them enough, making my choice (c)Kane a better one to match their captain points.

      Thoughts? Thanks.

Has Lukaku ever served up a good slice of revenge against Chelsea?

      Dear LvG

you do not NEED to play Fellaini. If you wish you can still play Martial and Lingard wide and Rooney up top. All you need to do if drop Herrera deeper and play Mata at #10

      Yours sincerely

Every single Man Utd fan (well except AP but he's a nutter and no one takes him seriously anyway)

We've all got so much cash tied up in Mahrez its ridiculous. If I were to sell him and want him back in my side I'd lose out on £0.8m from FPL's profit tax.

I would never sell him. I could even make him a 5th mid if he goes down the slope. Alli helps.

Unless you tried to be clever and sold him on WC a while back...then re-bought before Everton. 🙄

Would you ditch if you had barely anything tied up in him, Balders?

Is it worth doing Lukaku and Bellerin to Ageuro and Simpson for a hot worth it? Only way I can find te move.

Concerns are Lukaku being extra motivated against a ropey Chelsea defence and might not captain Aguero as already have Kane.
