In the opening match of Sunday’s double-header, Everton host Swansea City at Goodison Park. The Toffees have failed to taste victory across their previous four home match-ups, while the Swans are one of two teams that have posted just a solitary win on their travels.

Although Everton tallied seven goals over the last four Gameweeks, they ranked seventh-bottom for attempts (43) and fourth-bottom for shots on target (12). Of greater concern for Roberto Martinez is the fact that his men charted joint-top for goals conceded (eight), fourth for shots inside the box conceded (34), joint-fourth for big chances conceded (six) and joint-second for shots outside the box conceded (30), exposing their vulnerability at the back.

Swansea, meanwhile, have registered the joint-second-fewest attempts (34), second-fewest shots inside the box (34) and second-fewest big chances (two) since Gameweek 19. Furthermore, only Newcastle United have managed fewer goals away from home (five) than the Welsh outfit (eight), which bodes well for Everton’s shut-out prospects. On the defensive front, Swansea have conceded in all but one of their two road fixtures this term.

He's a young defender with potential. They tend to make mistakes. Doesn't make him awful, doesn't mean he's the saviour either.

It is called an opinion. If you don't like it then jog on muppet. I never once said those players were not good so stop twisting my comments. I said Ighalo would slow down which he has and you can do better than Alli for a 4th mid. Relax little kid and go get some milk from mummy.

He makes occasional mistakes because he is 21, but his potential is incredible. He is brilliant on the ball and I expect a big move in the next year or two. As big as Barcelona perhaps.

Yes he's good on the ball, but that does not make him a good DEFENDER

He clearly is a good defender, but is left vulnerable because of an attacking set up which too often sees him dragged outwide and left one on one. The question is whether he will become a great one. Chelsea were willing to invest alot in that possibility, and I expect others will too. It is his ability on the ball, and his ability to read the game, that sets him apart.

    6. il Brutto

This was really apparent last summer when he was on the same field with actually good promising defenders like Romagnoli and Rugani who were miles ahead.

Haha. That's actually absurd. I love that you think under 21's is a good representation of a player's ability too. As Rigsters and Drenthe proved..

Chelsea bid so much for a reason, and others will come for him in the summer.

        1. il Brutto
          • 13 Years
          10 years, 5 months ago

He has potential and some really good attributes for a modern defender but at this point he is still quite average. I'm not saying he won't become world class defender at some point. Chelsea and others bid him for his nationality and the apparent potential to improve.

The youth system in England rarely teaches kids how to be comfortable on the ball, especially from a central defender's point of view. Often it's a case of 'get it safe' or 'clear it' rather than: win the ball then look for the next pass. John Stones does that. He's 21, not a full package by any means but finding a defender who is comfortable on the ball usually means looking at late-20s and by then their legs have gone and you might only get a couple of seasons out of them. You invest in him now, building his talents and you'll be laughing for the foreseeable future. Maybe he'll come off the boil but it's worth the gamble with a potential talent like his.

Not to mention the fact that he's English which has numerous benefits.
