Next up this Friday evening, we roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article, casting an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of the weekend’s fixtures. As always, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

Captain Poll

Despite failing to score in four of his last five league outings, Sergio Aguero is the top candidate in this week’s Captain Poll as Man City make their way to Bournemouth. Just over 30% are backing the Argentine to produce the goods at the Vitality Stadium, though he’s scored just four times on his travels all season.

Dimitri Payet heads the chasing pack with over 16% of the votes cast. The West Ham playmaker has produced points in four of his last five appearances and carried his domestic form onto the international stage with another stunning free-kick for France over the last few days.

Alexis Sanchez and Harry Kane hover around the 8% mark. Kane has the best form of any player in the top-flight, with five goals and an assist in four, and visits a Liverpool defence with just two clean sheets in ten. Sanchez has the better fixture – at home to Watford – and has hinted at a return to form with a goal and two assists over the last three.

Roberto Firmino – who was ranked second in the Poll earlier this week – has dropped down the pecking order as doubts remain over his availability. The Liverpool midfielder faces a late assessment as he looks to continue the form that has racked up five goals and four assists in his previous six. Although a visit from Spurs is no easy task, Firmino has produced double-figures in three of his last four at Anfield.

Mesut Ozil (6%) is lower down as Arsenal prepare for the visit of a Watford defence with two clean sheets on their travels all season, whilst Cesc Fabregas (5%) is in the mix ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Villa after he scored twice against West Ham last time out.

Elsewhere, Leicester duo Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy remain real differentials with just 2% and 1% of the votes respectively ahead of the home clash with Southampton

Are these current standings backed by the underlying statistics?

Let’s start breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches and shed a little more light on the situation.

    1 week move:

    Siggy --> Arnie
    Kompany --> Cresswell/PVA

    Sound good?
First move leaves me with 8.2m for Kompany replacement

Just noticed Deeney will be playing against one of my defenders in every game until their blank. Should this stop me getting him?

    Considering Defoe instead.

FPL is all about hedging your bets. We all hate to have our defenders playing our attackers, but it doubles our chances (well, not really mathematically, but you get my point) that we will taste at least some success. So I wouldn't necessarily let that put you off Deeney - I think he's a decent option.

There are tweaks but I'm not getting a United defender. I've made my team to be more flexible and therefore more powerful by leaving cash in the bank for key trades in GW33/34

Yes, they are too problematic when it comes to GW35. I have to prioritise my blank GW players and Rojo isn't a heigh enough priority. With Young and Jones back and also recent controversy its possible that he might get a rest anyway but its a strategic call for me. I want 6GW33 players and Rojo doesn't allow that without a hit.

if I'm getting a player that will blank GW35 anyways I'm more tempted by Cresswell in now..

what are your thoughts on Clichy?

thinking about Cresswell - Clichy - Dann - Janmaat - Bellerin for my defense, then Dann > Sakho after that..scared about Kolarov even though he looks to have been frozen out

I think Clichy is a better option than Rojo tbh. With Rojo you're almost obliged to keep him for his second DGW in GW37 and by then he might not be as nailed on when everyone is back fit. Clichy you can get rid of in 36 or simply bench. Cresswell has the same issue as Rojo, no game in 35 is too much of a problem for me.

Great points, I suppose Cress can wait for 37.

Do you think Kolarov presents a legit risk to Clichy's playing time?

Its possible. Clichy is still a risk as well, so you'd be hoping the recent trend of nailed on ness continues

                        Robles Darlow
                        Bellerin Gabriel Sakho Olsson Dann

Dann will be sold somewhere along the line. I have very flexible arrangements with my 3 Palace players and likely 4.5m itb with 1 or 2 Liverpool in for Palace players in GW34

The reason I say this is because I always find the idea of a hit for a defender a bit off. And a DGW isn't an excuse when you could have another DGWer instead.

I agree. I do like the idea of suddenly bringing out triple Chelsea to play Bournemouth appealing tbh

Ah thats a shame. Not sure I'm keen on Lingard btw. I just think United attack is an incredibly bad invesment, particularly as you'll need to sell him in GW35. Thats 2 transfers spend on a likely dud imo

That transfer is far from set in stone. It is just an option as is the PVA one. I wouldn't need to make a transfer at all necessarily.

The hit allows a lot of flexibility with what I do and I am comfortable with it. I do have a route without a hit but I prefer it with

Without a hit something like this would work

              Transfers
              GW 32 Wildcard
GW 33 Save Transfer 4 DGW
GW 34 Barkley to Wijnaldrum 15 DGW
GW 35 Aguero to Costa 11 Players
              Bolasie to Willian
              GW 36 Wijnaldrum to Barkley
GW 37 Janmaat to Ivan 11 DGW
              GW 38 Whatever I fancy!

Or you could do Bolasie to Sissoko and free up a transfer

Getting rid of Aguero eh. Might be a popular idea at the time if he does badly so it could very well be the way to go. Not a fan of Wijnaldum though, the man is playing too deep now. I'd actually rather have Milner as bad as that sounds.

Not an option with 3 Liverpool already. I agree on Wij which is why I prefer the other option. The midfield options left open to me are rubbish

New options might pop up in that price range in GW34. I'd encourage you not to go with 3 Liverpool yet. Choose your 3rd in GW34 as they have greater price variance and midfield options.

It's ok. I have the flexibilty that if I want to say swap to Firmino I can instead of the Lingard transfer. That one could be use pretty much on anyone to get a different key asset

I understand the idea of a hit. I'm thinking similarly myself. Greater hit flexibility is achieved when you can afford more expensive players though. Not if you're limited to cheap options

if I get Clichy instead of Otamendi (not too keen on Mangala I don't think) will Kolarov troll me? Hasn't started an important game since the Leicester loss at the start of February and has been fit and on the bench the whole time

..but there's the PSG game before the DGW.. 😐

I'll never forget bringing him in, on a hit I think, because he was fit and firing and making him captain to see him get 1 point and go off injured and stay injured
