Next up this Friday evening, we roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article, casting an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of the weekend’s fixtures. As always, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

Captain Poll

Despite failing to score in four of his last five league outings, Sergio Aguero is the top candidate in this week’s Captain Poll as Man City make their way to Bournemouth. Just over 30% are backing the Argentine to produce the goods at the Vitality Stadium, though he’s scored just four times on his travels all season.

Dimitri Payet heads the chasing pack with over 16% of the votes cast. The West Ham playmaker has produced points in four of his last five appearances and carried his domestic form onto the international stage with another stunning free-kick for France over the last few days.

Alexis Sanchez and Harry Kane hover around the 8% mark. Kane has the best form of any player in the top-flight, with five goals and an assist in four, and visits a Liverpool defence with just two clean sheets in ten. Sanchez has the better fixture – at home to Watford – and has hinted at a return to form with a goal and two assists over the last three.

Roberto Firmino – who was ranked second in the Poll earlier this week – has dropped down the pecking order as doubts remain over his availability. The Liverpool midfielder faces a late assessment as he looks to continue the form that has racked up five goals and four assists in his previous six. Although a visit from Spurs is no easy task, Firmino has produced double-figures in three of his last four at Anfield.

Mesut Ozil (6%) is lower down as Arsenal prepare for the visit of a Watford defence with two clean sheets on their travels all season, whilst Cesc Fabregas (5%) is in the mix ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Villa after he scored twice against West Ham last time out.

Elsewhere, Leicester duo Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy remain real differentials with just 2% and 1% of the votes respectively ahead of the home clash with Southampton

Are these current standings backed by the underlying statistics?

Let’s start breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches and shed a little more light on the situation.

    De Gea (Butland*)
    Ivanovic, Kompany*, Simpson (Wollscheid, Alderweireld)
    Ozil, Mahrez, Sigurdsson, Alli (Lingard)
    Aguero, Kane, Vardy

    2 FTs 1.8 ITB

    One week punt before WC:

    A) Kompany + Alli -> Bellerin + Willian
    B) Kompany + Alli -> Gabriel + Payet (Gabriel can be any defender 5.5 max)

Advice appreciated just now regarding getting Payet in for Siggy...

one question... although Payet is a better option this week, isn't Barkley (or another Everton mid) a better option going on for 33 & 34 double double?

    1. Reedy
      • 15 Years

Maybe Lennon is better short-term, but then he has the blank GW too. Payet is a great long-term investment so beats out any of the Everton mids, to my mind.

Was really hoping you wouldn't say that.

I really value your opinion, BUT, Arnie at home against Siggy away has got to be Arnie I think.

Swans only one C/S on the road so unlikely C/S point for Siggy. I've been to the last few SWANs games and they are very blunt going forward (other than SIGGY) whereas Stoke are capable of scoring plenty.

        What's your take?

Stoke are without Shawcross and now Butland. So I fancy the Swans to score.

Not saying Stoke won't score, but I fancy Swansea will...

          That's my only logic.

    2 fts need a keeper & probably don't need Toby @ Liverpool.
Is Cech fit (or Adrian if not) & Bellerin for Toby?

Are you gonna WC next week?

      Toby -> Bellerin
Cech is risky since you need a keeper. Go with Adrian.

yep wc next week. Hart & Butland current keepers. so it's 2 genuine 1 week punts.

Thinking of getting both Cech and Gabriel for one week punts!

There's so much upside but a bit of a risk. Any advice pls?

    In for butland and Williams

Get Courtois, only Wenger knows if Cech will play

Chech or Ospina tomorrow? Any one week punters willing to take the risk?

I'm debating the same, but might just go with Courtois for a safe option.

Too risky for me and would ruin my week to get it wrong.

That's my thinking as well. Don't fancy Chelsea defence though. They seem struggle keeping CS. But it's Villa though..

    Mangala or Lovren?
    On a WC:
    - Lovren gives me option to bring in Yaya for GW34
    - Mangala gives me option to bring in Firmino.

      Why Lovren over Sakho?

    WC v852
    Robles, Darlow
    Bellerin, Azpilicueta, Mangala, Ward, Flanagan
    Lennon, Sanchez, Payet, Ozil, Bolasie
    Aguero, Sturridge, Lukaku

I don't fancy Man Utd defenders until GW34, and both Liverpool and Man City have European games before GW34, so will save 2 x FT.

    Sturridge a risk too far?

Flanagan is no go for me in that.

I would also be worried about Lennon featuring in all the DGWs, as so much competition and rotation in his position.

I'm liking the Sturridge should, I'm keeping my eye on him over the next week...

Flanagan isn't in Liverpool's EL squad, so should play vs Stoke next week (GW33) and against Bournemouth (GW34). He may then miss the 2nd DGW match against Everton but be back for Newcastle in GW35. Would that change your opinion, Evs? It would save me a FT for more attacking oriented moves.

Don't like Mangala and Flanagan not nailed. Would prefer a United defender in there. Sturridge is too risky IMO.

I think Managla is ok... Has a double and then a game, and should nail a place with Kompany out.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm thinking Mangala will be preferred over Demichelis, and as Evs points out, he has a GW35.

Flanagan is a concern but I think he's nailed over the next fortnight with Liverpool's EL commitments.

    Evening all

Should I take a 4pt hit to get Butland out? No back up playing GK.

I would, but that's just me. Clean sheet will give you +2, but a minus of any sort is a risk.

Yes, go for Adrian, or Courtois if you can afford it

I mulled over hit for a while but have now done it. Likely outcomes are CS = +2 and no CS = -2. Given the odds of a clean sheet you should take that bet every time.

Rate my Wildcard team out of 10 please guys.

    Mignolet - DDG
    Bellerin - Simpson - Gabriel - Reid - Delaney
    Payet - Ozil - Mahrez - Alli - Antonio
    Lukaku - Kun - Sturridge

I think a little too much spent on the goalies. Lennon could be worth a punt over Alli given he has up to 4 matches compared with Alli playing MUN, sto.
