It’s time to roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article this Friday afternoon, as we cast an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of a bumper round of fixtures. As usual, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

Alexis Sanchez is the runaway leader in this week’s Poll ahead of Arsenal’s pair of home fixtures against Palace and West Brom.

The Chilean has racked up over 49% of the votes cast due to an upturn in form that has seen him serve up three goals and a trio of assists in his last five league outings.

With visits to Chelsea and Newcastle on his agenda, Sergio Aguero is some distance behind in second spot. Although City have toiled on their travels for most of the season, scoring just 17 goals in 15 fixtures, the 19%-backed Argentine has upped his away output of late and netted five times in his last six road trips in the top-flight.

After ending a run of four straight blanks with a goal in last week’s 3-3 draw at West Ham, Mesut Ozil finds himself in third spot. Still owned by over 41% of FPL managers ahead of his pair of home matches, the German has, somewhat surprisingly, managed just a single assist in his last six at the Emirates.

Back-to-back clashes with Villa and Palace’s porous defences bode well for Anthony Martial. With 7% of the votes cast, the United striker is shaping up to be a major differential asset – indeed, the summer signing from Monaco has bagged four goals, three assists and ten bonus points in his last seven at Old Trafford.

Further down, a cast of very capable candidates jostle for position around the 2% mark, with Kevin de Bruyne, Dimitri Payet, Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge amongst the in-form alternatives for those willing to gamble with the armband.

Are these current standings backed by the underlying statistics?

Let’s start breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches and shed a little more light on the situation.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

So I'm in first in my head-to-head ML and I currently have Oezil. This week and next week I play people with Oezil and no Sanchez.

Does it make sense to stay with Oezil and let that just be a push or go with Sanchez. On WC so I could make pretty much any team within reason but the easiest/simplest difference in team options are:
    1) Sanchez and Fosu-Mensah
    2) Oezil and Stalling

I'm also not sure on a pool defender. Have mignolet currently but was thinking of doubling up on one of the options. Moreno currently in team, but I have no real clue who will get time. Is clyne the most nailed on?

If H2H is most important than it depends on the rest of your team if you keep Ozil.

Currently h2h is the most important. Need to defend my title. I understand the point that keeping Oezil is basically removing a player from the game because we all have him. I just am not sure which is more likely (Oezil going off when I have Sanchez or not). The Fosu-Mensah vs Smalling does plat in too but no one has manu def in the league currently.

        Team is
        Mig/schmeichel
        Alderweireld/smalling/Moreno/bellerin/4.9
        Oezil/Alli/Mahrez/Iwobi/Payet
        Kane/Aguero/Vardy

which option with a -4, help would be appreciated!
Was set up to bench boost after wildcard but now considering TC

A- Gabriel and Lukaku out for Dier and martial (bench boost active)
B- bolasie and Lukaku out for KDB and rashford (triple captain active)

Worth a hit to do Gabriel > Bellerin?

Bellerin likely to get 12+ points while Gabriel could get 0 with no sub on BB

Fellow bench boosters.. what on earth are we doing about Lukaku?

Having an injury concern during your bench boost week is an absolute nightmare since no one will be subbing in to replace him.

Very tempted by a Pelle transfer, especially considering his two fixtures in the coming weeks and his current form. Seems so wrong to transfer out a DGW player for a non DGW player though. (I already have Martial and won't consider Sturridge for rotation reasons and already regrettably having 3 Liverpool players who will probably rotate anyway)

I disagree. i think he'll get one game max. He'll be saved for FA Cup that is their priority. I can see him playing 45mins over those two games
