While Jamie Vardy showed glimpses of potential during his first year in the Premier League with Leicester, bagging five goals and an impressive 12 assists, few Fantasy managers gave serious consideration to the 6.0-priced forward at the dawn of the new season. The Foxes frontman soon emerged as a “must-have†for our three-man frontlines, though, and ended the campaign as the joint-second leading goalscorer with 24 goals. That earned Vardy a place in the PFA Team of the Year and Barclays Player of the Season accolade, while the Foxes striker claimed 35% of the vote to claim the first spot among the forwards in our Team of the Season.

THE STATISTICS

Vardy hit the ground running under new Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri, claiming a goal and an assist over the first three Gameweeks, before setting a Premier League record by scoring in 11 consecutive matches.

By Gameweek 17 his price had risen to 7.7 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), but Vardy did then suffer a brief dry spell in front of goal, failing to get on the scoresheet in six appearances between Gameweeks 17 and 22, although he did keep ticking over with three assists across that period. His price subsequently dropped to 7.2 in FPL, but the goals continued to flow during the second half of the season, with braces against Liverpool, Sunderland and Everton as the Foxes lasted the course to secure the most surprising of Premier League titles.

Vardy ended the campaign with 211 points in FPL, tied with Tottenham’s Harry Kane as the highest scoring forward in the game, whilst only his Leicester team-mate Riyad Mahrez (240) managed more overall.

In terms of bonus points, Vardy’s 30 was outshone by both Mahrez, who totalled 38, and Kane, who managed to rack up 33. Mahrez also held the edge when it came to points per game (ppg), averaging 6.5, compared to Vardy’s 5.9, which ranked second among forwards behind Sergio Aguero (6.1).

THE PROSPECTS

In light of last year’s exploits, we can expect Vardy to be elevated into the premium bracket across the Fantasy games. A price of around 10.0 or 10.5 in FPL seems the likeliest scenario, which should see him valued around the same as team-mate Mahrez as the champions look to defend their title.

A delve into the underlying data still looks promising for Vardy and shows last season’s output was far from fortuitous. He sat second only to Kane for efforts inside the box (96 to 106), shots on target (52 to 74) and big chances (34 to 35), highlighting that he clearly has the numbers befitting a high-priced frontman.

Vardy’s goal scoring feats are also all the more impressive given that Mahrez started the season as Leicester’s first-choice penalty taker, before two misses from the Algerian in January saw Vardy take over spot-kick duties. Despite failing to score a penalty against Everton in Gameweek 37, the England international is expected to remain number one in the pecking order for 2016/17.

There is, of course, Leicester’s involvement in the Champions League to also factor in this time around. Ranieri’s reputation as “The Tinkerman†was forged over a number of years but last term’s lack of European involvement, allied with an FA Cup third round exit, ensured that the Foxes’ teamsheet rarely changed from one week to the next.

Vardy’s pace on the counter and work rate up top seems too integral to Leicester’s tactics under the Italian, though, and his importance was highlighted by the fact that he played for a number of months with a protective cast on a broken wrist sustained in September. It’d be no surprise if Vardy remains immune to any chopping and changing, then, whilst his injury-free record – like Tottenham’s Kane – is another factor in his favour.

Should Leicester remain as potent a force in the final third next time out, it may well come down to a straight shoot out between Vardy and Mahrez for our affections. With 11 double-figure hauls to Vardy’s five, the Algerian is clearly the more explosive and offers a superior captaincy option on any given Gameweek. Vardy, on the other hand, affords a greater level consistency. Having scored or assisted in 26 of his 36 league outings (or 72%) compared to Mahrez’ record of picking up points in 19 of his 37 (51%) appearances under Ranieri, his ability to chip in with returns on a regular basis may ultimately sway it for some.

The guy we had with Rafa was great, can't remember his name, he also used to make dossiers for the keepers every match going over every little detail, particularly regarding penalties.

Have come up with quite an interesting squad:

Kozacik / Patricio [...Haven't looked into keepers much yet tho]
    Hector / Juanfran / Mangala / Denayer / Hinteregger
    Reus / Perisic / Grosicki / Dzsudzsak / Glushakov
    Lewandowski / Muller / Giroud

    Notes:

Haven't yet look much into keepers or defensive rotation, but went for picks who seemed like good value. Hopefully either Hinteregger or Prodl will nail the starting role at 4.5 mil.

I wanted to get KDB, but at the moment can't afford him so I put in Reus. All these midfielders can score goals I think. I read Glushakov at 4.5 might become a starter after someone else got injured.

I like it, wasnt sure on the poland double up but i like the lay out, i agree with KDB and id probably look at dropping Kozacik to a 4.0 keeper and running with one keeper to upgrade reus to KDB

    Right I have a plan:

    DDG, Sommer
    Schar, Eliseu, Dragovic, Vrsaljko, Denayer
De Bruyne, Ozil, Alaba, Grosicki, Mak
    Griezmann, Giroud, Shaqiri

If Giroud isn't nailed on, I'll swap him for Kane/ Morata
If Giroud is nailed, I might downgrade Schar to Djourou and bring in Muller for Griezmann

Lot of tinkering to be done throughout the friendlies though

      Is DDG nailed on, though?

For £0.5m more Rodriguez is better than Schar. Isn't he on pens too? Not too keen on Giroud either. Kane is far better in that price bracket. Better still if you can have Griezmann and Muller.

They need a striker or they'll be in trouble again. Only so much Siggy can do.

They should get Bony back from Man City, he's more valuable to Swansea than to Man City's bench.

Again very hard to judge right now with all the huge sums of money yet to be spent but i think it's fair to assume City Man United Liverpool Chelsea will improve based on their managers.. Arsenal will fall based on theirs..Leicester will find it hard to retain the title so they will likely fall.. Spuds Everton Hammers Saints harder to judge until we see how they invest

Just saw something in French version of the rules of the Fantasy Euros regarding substitutions inside a gameweek :
"Le bonus capitaine est perdu si un nouveau capitaine est sélectionné."

This means : "The captain bonus is lost if a new captain is selected."

I haven't seen this anywhere in the English version of the rules. I even checked the German and Spanish versions and found nothing.

What do you think this could mean? Is it just a mistake in the French version?

    1. Jazz!
      • 10 Years

Maybe it means the previous captain's bonus is lost if a new captain is selected so only the new captain gets double points?

I presume it means if your captain scores 2 (which would be 4 as captain), when you change to another player it will go from 4 to 2 on your "view points" section

Lot of money tied up into a few players there. I would improve the bench as you can sub players and need to increase your chances of scoring

do you reckon he will start instead Johansson?

as benfica fan i would like to see him play.. (but not good enough to see some clubs buy him after end of tournament). Sorry 😀

                For sure.
Our RB Lustig is also extremely injury prone and Victor could also feature there but Seb Larsson is more likely.
Lots of big clubs are scouting him.

    7.0m left for a midfielder

Kroos - Sharing some set pieces with Ozil (who I also have), but tough enough group.

Fabregas - likewise, sharing some set pieces for Spain but they have a tricky group and we don't really know how attacking Spain will be.

Grosicki - Set pieces for Poland, but as someone pointed out, a lot of his goals/ assists came from playing very weak opposition in the qualifiers.

Milner - surely he'll be on a lot of set pieces for England, and England have a fairly okay group. Best England side I've seen in a while.

Now I can stretch to a 7.5m midfielder like Rakitic, Perisic, or Konplyanka if I downgrade Schar to Djourou.

    Thoughts?

11 goals in the last 19 games for Perisic and listed as a midfielder

        That's enough to tempt me

Perisic better prospect than those options imo but Schar to Djourou isn't the way I'd free up that 0.5m. Any other places you can free up cash?

I wouldn't double up on German mids and Kroos isn't the best fantasy player imo. Personally I doubt I will get a German mid and if I do, Reus is the only one I'm consider. I have Grosicki in my team as my Poland cover but it is far from settled

i wouldn't downgrade Schar.. so pick one of 7.0 options (i like grosicki from that lot)

They imploded already by not selecting Benzema, regardless of his sex tape saga. Deschamps has been all over the place in terms of selection.

    Hi guys,

If anyone could complete this survey I'd be very grateful. It's in Spanish and I'm fully aware most won't have a clue what it means. It doesn't matter which answers you click, the point of it is to show I can analyse the data not collect it.

The only two important answers are questions 1 and 9, which you have to select ''Si'' for. Even if just one person did it it'd be very helpful.

    The link is here http://www.encuestafacil.com/RespWeb/Qn.aspx?EID=2160204

    Thanks

Does anyone think Mourinho was good at developing young players . If I was a United fan I would be worried about Rashford etc

Neither Real or Chelsea develop younger players they have blank cheques to play with... if he sees them as good enough then they will play a big part for him.. have no worries over Rashford he has proven his talent as has Martial Shaw Borthwick Jackson.. Fosu Mensah's size and power makes him very much a player in the Jose mould so he could have a huge future also.. Not worried at all

Blank cheques as opposed to 250 million ? . Chelsea have won multiple youth cups but Mourinho gave none of them a real go . I think this is going to be as tough a challenge for Mourinho as City will be for Pep .
