We begin our coverage of Group B with a look at Russia; a side that has flattered to deceive on the European stage.

Winners of the inaugural UEFA European Championship in 1960 (as the Soviet Union) and three times runners-up, their pedigree is seemingly a long and proud one. They have only made it out of the group stages once, however, on their way to the 2008 semi-final, in the post-Soviet era.

Repeating those heroics looks beyond an ageing squad that should, nonetheless, still make it into the knock-out phase. They face England at 8pm on Saturday, June 11, Slovakia four days later at 2pm and round off their group matches against Wales at 8pm on Monday, June 20.

Second favourites behind England for the group, Leonid Slutski’s men would face the runners-up of Group F in such a scenario, which could see them square up to the likes Austria, Iceland or Hungary and boost their chances of progressing into the quarter-finals.

ROAD TO QUALIFICATION

Russia finished the qualification campaign strongly, winning their last four matches to finish second in Group G to surprise package Austria and consigning Sweden to a play-off berth.

A mid-campaign change in management saw  Slutski replace Fabio Capello, prompting a more attacking emphasis, and they lost just two matches, both 1-0 to the group winners.

The 21 goals scored in ten qualifying matches looks solid enough, but 11 of those came in their two fixtures with Liechtenstein, whilst crowd trouble at their away match in Montenegro led them to being awarded that tie 3-0.

At the back, Russian conceded just five times in qualifying – racking up five clean sheets, they were never breached more than once in any of their ten group fixtures.

In terms of recent friendlies, Russia have played five times over the last 12 months, triumphing over Belarus, Portugal and Lithuania, with clean sheets accrued in the latter pair of fixtures. The 4-2 win over Belarus, though, allied with losses to Croatia (1-3) and France (2-4) suggests they seem to have lost some resilience of late.

Most Appearances Igor Akinfeev (10); Sergei Ignashevich, Aleksandr Kokorin (9); Vasili Berezutsky, Dmitri Kombarov, Alan Dzagoev, Oleg Shatov, Artem Dzyuba (8), Igor Smolnikov, Denis Glushakov, Roman Shirokov (7)

Most Goals Artem Dzyuba (8); Aleksandr Kokorin (3); Sergei Ignashevich, Dmitri Kombarov, Fedor Smolov, Oleg Kuzmin, Alan Dzagoev (1).

Most Assists Sergei Ignashevich, Artem Dzyuba, (2); Dmitri Kombarov, Aleksandr Kokorin, (1).

The Key Targets

Russia’s reliance on target man Artem Dzyuba is total. The six-foot-four inch forward averaged a goal per appearance over qualifying, although all but one of his eight strikes came against the group’s bottom two teams. Dzyuba does, however, have an excellent club record at the highest level, scoring in each of his last five Champions League group fixtures and notching 22 goals and 11 assists in 44 appearances for Zenit St Petersburg last season. Priced at 8.0 in the Uefa game, he is the focal point of a 4-2-3-1 formation that lacks pace, but has a good deal of midfield guile and is difficult to break down.

Sergei Ignashevich looks costly at 5.5 for a defender, but Russia’s most capped player offers the greatest attacking threat amongst from the back and served up a goal and two assists in qualifying. Ignashevich was also placed in the top three spots for successful tackles and interceptions amongst Slutski’s squad, highlighting his potential in the Draft Kings offering.

Aleksandr Kokorin (7.0) scored three on the road to France but his value is diminished by being deployed out wide while being classed as a striker in the Uefa game. Nonetheless, he still fired the same number of attempts as Dzyuba in qualifying and sat second for efforts in the area.

Dmitri Kombarov (6.0) replaced Yuri Zhirkov at left back in the qualification campaign and, with the latter now injured and out of the squad, should start all three group matches. In the official UEFA game, Kombarov has been designated as a midfielder, which compromises his value, though the underlying numbers bode well in the Draft Kings offering. With Alan Dzagoev sidelined through injury, Kombarov is the undisputed number one for dead-ball duties, whilst his crossing, successful tackles and interceptions should bring in the points.

Skipper Roman Shirokov is expected to play in “the hole” behind Dzyuba. Valued at 6.5, he will need to improve on his meagre return of two assists in qualifying, though Shirokov did register double-figures for both efforts on goal and key passes over his seven appearances.

THE LONG SHOTS

At 6.5 in the Uefa game, Oleg Shatov looks set to take up his spot on the right of Russia’s 4-2-3-1. Although his output in qualifying wasn’t great, he played all but two of those matches and bagged ten goals and 14 assists in all competitions for Zenit last year. Shatov is also likely to be handed a share of dead-ball duties in light of Dzagoev’s absence.

Priced at 5.5 in Uefa, Feder Smolov was the top scorer in Russia’s Premier League last season, with 20 strikes to his name. He isn’t guaranteed to start but with Zhirkov injured, Kokorin should stay on the left and could see Smolov utilised alongside Dzyuba in a 4-1-3-2 if Slutski needs to go on the offensive.

In defence, Igor Smolnikov comes in at just 5.0 and may appeal to those keen on a cheaper option in defence. The right-back played a part in seven of the qualifiers and his delivery from out wide could be beneficial in Draft Kings.

Upcoming Friendlies

Czech Republic vs Russia (June 1), Serbia vs Russia (June 5)

Alright, the linesman is the one who should have seen it. And he really should. The offside may have been marginal, but it was absolutely clear.

Can you really blame him for the offside? That's on the linesman and the useless wasteman standing next to the net. And the Pepe one is a very controversial call to make.

I hate players that play rough but cry over the smallest of touches. Diego Costa, Pepe, Ramos...oh man they make my blood boil.

When Otamendi did something similar against Leicester I was furious. Can't stand that sort of play.

Its why people despise Mourinho, in the big games the players are out to do nothing but upset the opposition and stop a game of football from happening, until they end up knicking a goal with their bully of a CF.

100% agree wit you both. If the player plays rough, he should not cry. If he cries a foul, he should not play dirty. I can accept either flaw, but not both in the same person. And Mourninho along with his favourite players Pepe and Diego Costa epitomises that.

Btw, one player fans don't often recognise for this is Thiago Motta, but he's absolutely hated by other players.

Haven't watched enough Thiago Motta to see it in him. I feel like David Luiz has a bit of Pepe streak within him though.

Not at all. David Luiz can be a bit crazy at times, but he's a fair guy. You know, there's an interesting thing that other Ligue 1 players tell about PSG: it's a silent team, they don't speak to the referee, nor to the opponent, nor even to each other, but they're completely automatised, communicating between them without words, but are of very good sports, very fair - except for two guys, Zlatan, who kind of insults everybody, and Motta, who complains to ref about every imaginable thing and meanwhile is the dirtiest player in the league. He's tops every most hated player list of other players, by a huge margin.

I really like David Luiz but sometimes he's just really nasty. Seems to have a penchant for diving and fouling a lot in some games. Other than that seems like a good bloke. Not a dick like Pepe or Costa.

Somehow only got a yellow for this, too. He never gets sanctioned, a bit like Van Bommel, really. These two are pretty similar: absolutely ditry and loathed scum, but never get sent off and are very useful for their teams.

You know, the funny anecdote is that Ferri, whom Motta punched, told in the interview after the match that he loves the way Motta plays and as long as it stays like that only on the pitch, he's fine with it. Some good sports that guy. Also apparently the rare guy in the league who doesn't hate Motta.

I used to watch the Serie A a lot and Thiago Motta always confused me because I could never tell if he was Brazilian or Italian and I always got vague answers to that question. Mourinho seems to instill a nasty streak into his players though.

Ferri is a kind of fiery guy himself. Not a cheat, however, but plays very rough. So he just said that since he plays a bit rough, he kind of accepts getting punched once a while.

And, incidentally, that's exactly what I initially meant: I can wholly accept a player playing rough, if he can also take it from the others. The problem with the likes of Motta and Pepe (and Busquets!) is that they play not only rough but outright dirty, and then feign injuries, dive, complain to refs etc.

The quality of banter is not strained,
It droppeth like the gentle dew, or harsher rain,
    Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest;
It blesseth him that says and him that hears:
    It is an attribute to God himself;
And earthly power doth then show likest God’s
When humour seasons malice. Therefore, Man,
Though sarcasm be thy plea, consider this,
That, in the course of banter, none of us
    Should see salvation: we do pray for insight;
And that same prayer doth teach us all to render
The deeds of tolerance. I have spoke thus much
    To mitigate the malice of thy plea;
Which if thou follow, this strict court of FFScout
Must needs give sentence ‘gainst the miscreants here ... 😉

I've seen my fair share of rubbish posted on here from time to time but tonight genuinely shocked me.. to see a guy who has just slotted home the decisive penalty in a CL final immediately slated the way he was was quite something.. Ronaldo may not have been at his best tonight actually he was poor but worth remembering that it was his stunning hat trick in the semi final that turned round a 0-2 deficit single handedly that had Real in the final part of his 16 goals in this seasons competition a total never before reached by any player in the history of the European cup.. apart from himself of course who hit 17 two seasons ago.. 4 consecutive seasons as the highest scorer in europes most elite club competition and 5th in total by the way.. While Messi was anonymous in both legs of Barcelonas quarter final with Atletico when his team needed him most i saw no such garbage posted (although he isn't a six foot plus good looking and vain ex Manchester United player with a six pack) Well in Ronnie son 🙂

    This team look any good?

Trying to be a bit different as usual...

    Randolph/Patrico

    Chiriches, Dier, Hector, Alba, Kosc

    Rakitic, Torje, Ozil, Siggy, Dzsudzsak

    Morata, Giroud, Kane

Gone for pricey at the back, set pieces in midfield and what i think may be good value up front.

Any glaring errors let me know, considering Alaba/Janko.

Personally, I think the 4.5 keepers aren't going to keep clean sheets so will never end up in your XI, so is it worth having a 4.0 to give you0.5 elsewhere?Otherwise, I like your team, I've gone with a similar tactic at the back, spending more than most

What are people's views on the Giroud vs Griezman debate?

I currently have Griezman but this is mainly down to if he fires so many people own him that it will have a big impact on anyone's rank who doesn't own him. But then logically, Girouds playing up front, Griezman on the wing, and looking at past results Girouds done better internationally. However, when Benzema was playing Griezman's output was better.

Is he worth the extra 1.5 just for security or will he genuinely out score Giroud...

Guess it comes down to what you do with that 1.5 and if you have other captain options.

For me it's Griezmann and 9.0 pr less striker (Kane/ Mandzucik)

Or Muller and Giroud. Which looks so much better on paper and for goals.

I'm 100% sure Griezmann will play. Can we say the same about Giroud? The guy hasn't even made the Arsenal team recently.

Couldn't the France front three easily be Payet----Griezmann---Martial?

      1. Big4FPL
        • 11 Years

Yeah that is a fair point, though is Griezman comfortable as a lone striker? Even for Atletico he has Torres or plays out wide, he's rarely alone up front, I thought

        1. Saniul

Martial could switch places with him at times allowing Griezmann to move to right wing, if they play that front three indeed.

Yeah I guess that's possible! So if the starting line included Giroud would you consider him...or still be unsure (of which I wouldn't blame you, this is my dilemma too that I just prefer seeing Griezman in my team to Giroud!)

I disagree with that part. The amount of service he gets from the Arsenal midfield, you can't not have so few goals and call yourself a good striker, whatever your style of play is.

Maybe the numbers don't say everything. Every single Arsenal fan would want a new striker next season, and I don't see a top team trying to take Giroud either - says a lot about the player.

Don't get me wrong - I really like him, his workrate, he has passion for the game - he just isn't good enough to be Arsenal #1 or France #1.

The only thing I learnt from the Champions League final yesterday.

Saul Niguez is an absolutely brilliant, brilliant player. Every ten times he has the ball in a difficult position surrounded by opponent players, nine times he will somehow get out of that space and pass the ball to a teammate in an advanced position - something what I am used to seeing Xabi Alonso do. We get a lot of young wingers and fullbacks these days, but to be an intelligent ball-playing midfielder and dribbler at the age of 21 - that is top class.

I wish Spain play him alongside Iniesta and Busquets in their 4-3-3 formation - he is better than Sergi Roberto and Fabregas. del Bosque doesn't have the balls though.

    1. Eden Hazardous
      • 11 Years

I mean Saul is really good but saying the he is better than Fabregas atm is a bit of a stretch . Yes , he has the potential to be a whole lot better but I prefer Fabregas over him in the Spanish side for the Euros.

      1. Saniul
        • 13 Years
        9 years, 9 months ago

By better, I mean, he could provide that edge or x-factor that was so missing from the '14 side. Fabregas is a very good player, but he is so similar to the other ball-playing midfielders they have. Same with Sergi Roberto and Koke.

        1. Eden Hazardous
          • 11 Years

Oh , I forgot about Koke ! Koke should definitely start over Fabregas imo btw.

Spain have so many good midfielders ! It is a tough job for Del Bosque.

What do we think? Friendlies should hopefully tell me the things I need to know

    Sommer, Rui Patricio
    Rodriguez, Juanfran, Dragovic, Vrsaljko, Lindelof*
De Bruyne, Ozil, Perisic, Alaba, Mak
    Muller, Giroud*, Pedro*

    * Uncertainties in my team

If Giroud is out I'll swap him for Kane/ Mandzucik and upgrade Lindelof if I can
If Payet looks nailed I'll downgrade Ozil and upgrade Lindelof or do Pedro to Janko

    1. Saniul

      That's a solid side, a bit template-ish though.

I have the same midfield as yours - except Pogba ahead of Ozil. Get rid of Pedro though, he won't be nailed in any way - get one of the cheaper strikers who are nailed-on, like Janko or Lafferty.

He was lucky to make the squad. If NI play 4-2-3-1, it will be Lafferty who will start up front, only if they play 4-3-1-2, Grigg has a chance, but he has to compete with Washington. I'd avoid.

Ohhh. Not even for the romance of it? 😉

Am trying to find a way of not having to gamble on Rafa Silva without selection knowledge on the final gameday... Not much to choose from as far as cheap mids go, other option is to plump with someone like Glushakov as a bench warmer.
