Euro 2016 Team Analysis – Albania

Our Euro 2016 team analysis gets underway this morning with a look at rank outsiders Albania. Gianni de Biasi’s side open their Group A fixtures with a clash against Switzerland on Saturday June 11 at 2pm before taking on hosts France four days later (8pm) and finishing with a head-to-head with Romania on June 19 at 8pm.

Road to Qualification

Albania earned their place in the final 24 as one of the best runners-up after finishing behind runaway winners Portugal. De Biasi’s side ended with 14 points, winning four times and drawing twice in a group that also contained the likes of Serbia and Denmark.

Their defence mustered four clean sheets and conceded five times, scoring on seven occasions in as many matches, though the numbers are slightly skewed as they were awarded a 3-0 win over Serbia in light of their away fixture being abandoned.

Over the past 12 months, Albania have beaten France 1-0 and Luxembourg 2-0 in friendlies and also drawn with Georgia, though lost 2-1 to Austria in late March.

Most starts Etrit Berisha, Lorik Cana, Taulant Xhaka (8), Ansi Agolli (7), Amir Abrashi, Elseid Hysaj, Burim Kukelli, Ermir Lenjani (6)

Most goals Bekim Balaj, Berat Djimsiti, Shkelzen Gashi, Armando Sadiku, Mergim Mavraj, Ermir Lenjani (1)

Most assists Amir Abrashi, Ermir Lenjani, Taulant Xhaka, Ledian Memushaj, Odise Roshi (1)

The Key Targets

It’s fair to say that Albania’s main men may struggle to persuade Fantasy managers they are worthy of consideration. As shown by the numbers above, only one player – left winger Ermir Lenjani, with a goal and assist – played a part in more than one strike over qualifying.

Lenjani (priced at 5.5 in the Uefa game) is ranked second for both attempts on goal and key passes for his country over the qualifiers and sits joint-top for shots on target. Domestically, he made 10 of his 15 starts for Nantes last season at left-back and averaged more successful crosses per appearance in Ligue 1 than any team-mate – a factor to consider for the Draft Kings game, as crosses are key to the scoring metric.

Indeed, Albania’s left flank seems their prime source of creativity. Lenjani is second to full-back Ansi Agolli for crosses and chances created, which suggests that the latter – who is also top for interceptions – may be a better bet than the highly-rated right-back Elseid Hysaj, who played all but one Serie A match for Napoli last term. Both are priced at 4.5 in Uefa, as is centre-half Mergim Mavraj, who has three goals in 30 international appearances. Hysaj does rank top for successful tackles, though, and third for interceptions, which does somewhat strengthen his Draft Kings appeal.

Biasi’s emphasis on defence meant that Albania didn’t concede a single away goal on their travels. The Group A long shots are expected to line up in a compact 4-5-1, with a 4-2-3-1 set-up perhaps more of an option should they be forced to go on the offensive. That resilience could benefit Etrit Berisha, then – he is also 4.5 in the Uefa game and started every match between the posts. It’s worth bearing in mind that keepers earn five points in Draft Kings compared to three points for defenders.

In the centre of the park, Basle’s Taulant Xhaka, brother of Arsenal target Granit, looks the man most likely to be handed dead-ball duties and is slightly cheaper than Lenjani at 5.0 in the Uefa game.

Up front, Sokol Cikalleshi offered the greatest goal threat of any Albania player over the qualifiers and was joint-top with Lenjani for efforts on target. The downside, though, is that only four of his seven appearances were starts.

The Long Shots

The versatile Shkelzen Gashi offers De Biasi an option as a central support striker or alternative to Roshi wide right and could be utilised as an option later in matches. Coming in at 6.0 in Uefa, Gashi has Champions League experience and twice finished top scorer in the Swiss top-flight with Basle. He was ranked third for efforts on goal over the qualifiers, though featured on just four occasions.

Wonderkid Milot Rashica (5.5 in Uefa) could be one to consider. Named in the provisional 27-man squad – which will be whittled down to 24 players by May 31 – he was handed his first cap in March and served up eight goals and three assists for Vitesse Arnhem last term from a role on the right. The teenager has clearly impressed his manager, who has labeled him “an extraordinary player” after last year’s breakout season.

If only Hughes doesn't rotate upfront so much. But with a price under 7.0 he could be option in some drafts, for example if you go hard on mids.

When is the best time to WC? Thinking of setting up a GW1 team and then WCing almost straight away to set up for the next 2 fixtures and absorb any obvious price rises.

      *Iceland

I'm not so sure, as a big fan of Lagerbäck coach of Iceland.
They are quite capable when it comes defending, ignore their friendlies.
Austria also very solid, better then they have been for ages.
Hungary I know little about but with the little I've seen I'm sceptic of their chances. Will of course have to go in with the first intent to not allow a goal and pray they get at least one good chance forward and put that away.

And you don't notice any significant difference? Martial is a forward, Coman a winger, Payet a playmaker, their only one aside from Pogba and he plays in a box-to-box role, and then Martial and Coman both seriously lack experience on all levels. They're screwed if Payet gets injured.

Coman is a winger and so yes you could play left wing.
Martial has been playing left wing and his best performances have been at left wing, so yes he could play left wing.

Lets not forget that Payet was ineffective at left wing for West Ham either.

He may start, he may not, but to say he's nailed on is disingenuous. You're not the manager after all... unless...Didier? 😯 😉

Martial has been by far at his best as a CF. No debate on that.

What you don't seem to understand is the system that the team plays. It is not a winger position. Or, it is as some say a "central winger". Those wide players are not real wingers, and this is definitely not a case of playing actually 3 forwards, but playing a CF, and two on his sides who will move all over the attacking zone to make plays. Like Valbuena and Ribéry. Neither of them was actually a forward. Having already a bit strikerish option on one side in Griezmann, Deschamps seriously needs there a creative player who will drift more to the no. 10 position than towards the flank, somebody like he had in Valbuena and Ribéry before. And Payet is the only one in the team who fills the bill. Martial in particular is effectively a striker. Deschamps may still beat teams like Romania with 3 forwards or 2 wingers, but against bigger teams he'll be screwed if Payet gets injured.

Anyway, seen the recent matches and the team structure, Payet is one of the first names on the lineup. Martial just barely made the team.

Last game: Martial and Griezzman wide.
Game before that: Payet and Griezzman.
Game before that: Ben Arfa and Martial.
Game before that: Martial and Griezzman.
Game before that: Martial and Griezzman.
Game before that: Valbuena and Griezzman.

Notice that Payet, like Diarra, Gignac and Ben Arfa, only made their come backs in the team very recently, and earlier Payet was only used in the 4-2-3-1 in the hole. In between, they were looking for the new playmaker. Now he's been effectively moved to the flank playing with Griezmann in roles such as Ribéry's and Valbuena's before. Not saying it works too well, mind. I don't think that team is much to shout about.

100% agreed with that. Imagine that it could have been Payet-Benzema-Griezmann. Any combination they can make upfront now is a serious drop in quality from that.

But lacking Benzema also means they need all the more creativity on the flanks, especially if they play with either Gignac or Giroud upfront. Those are not bad forwards, nor simple poachers, but neither is really creative player either. So if they play with three forwards, say Martial - Giroud - Griezmann, that drops Griezmann very deep, and reduces them to counter attacking, which I doubt is what Deschamps wants to do as he admires Barcelona's game.

If both Giroud and Gignac are inefficient, then either Martial or Griezmann will go upfront and they'll play with pace. But right now, with Payet's recent performances, he's one of the first names in the team sheet.

Hope he starts, but with a midfield with Coman, Martial, Pogba, Kante, Diarra, not to mention the old guard of Cabaya and Valbuena in it, i wouldn't be suprised if he doesn't.

Deschamps might want a solid midfield though with Pogba, Cabaye and Matuidi forming the central three. WIth Martial, Griezmann and Giroud as the attack

          .................... Matuidi .............
          ........... Cabaye ... Pogba ........
          Griezmann ......................... Martial
          ..................... Giroud ......................

          Or alternatively

          ........... Cabaye ... Pogba ........
          Griezmann .... Payet ...... Martial
          ..................... Giroud ......................

          1. Camp No No

Not might, but wants, but it's not with Cabaye, and Matuidi won't play the lowest man down. It's:

            ---------Diarra--------
            ----Pogba-----Matuidi
            Griezmann---------Payet
            -----Giroud/Gignac----

Deschamps doubles up the positions. Cabaye is Diarra's backup, Kanté Matuidi's and Sissoko Pogba's. Martial Payet's and Coman Griezmann's. Although the CF position being as shambles as it is, he may start with Griezmann or Martial upfront if it looks like Giroud and Gignac are both useless.

There's general mixing possibility upfront, with many players able to play either flank or in the middle, but basically it's just the CF that is up for grabs.

Or Gignac will surely start given his all season form in Mexico? Lacazette didn't even make the team and he was certainly their most in-form forward in this end of the season. Giroud possibly the least, aside from the Villa game. Whoever will start will start on the basis of the upcoming friendlies. I think Giroud could have a little advantage because he's scored a plenty in France's recent friendlies, but that's speculation.

But Deschamps will almost 100% sure play 4-3-3, with a midfield three in which Pogba is the most attacking player. And if Gignac plays, he will play as CF, not on the flank. That is not almost 100% sure but absolutely 100% sure. Evra will start on left, Mathieu is in the team as a CB.

One thing to add to this as not many seem to follow ligue1 is that Matuidi is no stranger to get in the penalty box either. And as he is around(not sure on prices) 2m cheaper then Pogba it might be of interest to look him up for those with Pogba.

Anyway, as a word of warning, they played that 4-2-3-1 with Payet as a playmaker and Giroud upfront the last time they faced Albania, and lost 0-1. Both of them got subbed off on half-time, but that's not the point. The point is that it's hard to see them not playing 4-3-3 with those central wingers, and Griezmann will be one of them and Payet most certainly the other, with a CF in between them.

                    I get you. Thanks.

But is not Evra too old?

Well, yes, but that selection doesn't make much sense to me anyway.

More of an inside forward though isn't he?

              Like Arnie, KDB, Martial, etc

Not saying that it wouldn't look much nicer with something like Coman-Griezmann-Payet. The pace!

That alternatively won't ever happen. Both Cabaye and Pogba are CM and not so good at defence. One of Matuidi, Kante, Diarra will always play.

Can't see them starting without Matuidi.

            Matuidi unlikely. Diarra possibly.

            I see it like this:

            Kante/Diarra
            Grizeman Pogba Cabaye Martial
            Giroud

I just think Martial is more likely nailed on. Doubt he wont start Pogba or Greizmann. Only place open for Payet is cenral mid. Cabaye more natural in that role.

Payet will play Doos and will be over every single dead ball apart from those more suited to a left footer like that one that Griezmann hit

Fwiw this is based on nothing but seeing the guy weave his magic from set plays.. free kicks corners.. insanely accurate

He should be and i would have him in myself but to say he is 100 % nailed as Pogba Griezmann Lloris etc are is wide of the mark

Have come up with quite an interesting squad:

Kozacik / Patricio [...Haven't looked into keepers much yet tho]
    Hector / Juanfran / Mangala / Denayer / Hinteregger
    Reus / Perisic / Grosicki / Dzsudzsak / Glushakov
    Lewandowski / Muller / Giroud

    Notes:

Haven't yet look much into keepers or defensive rotation, but went for picks who seemed like good value. Hopefully either Hinteregger or Prodl will nail the starting role at 4.5 mil.

I wanted to get KDB, but at the moment can't afford him so I put in Reus. All these midfielders can score goals I think. I read Glushakov at 4.5 might become a starter after someone else got injured

    Neuer (Rui Patricio)
Hector - Pepe - Rodriguez (Dier - Bartra)
    Alaba - Alli - Koke - Siggurd
    Muller - Kane - Griezmann

    Thoughts?
