Defending champions Spain lose their 11-match unbeaten run ahead of Euro 2016 after falling to defeat at home to Georgia.

Spain 0 Georgia 1

Spain suffered a shock 1-0 home reverse at the hands of Georgia in their final pre-Euro 2016 friendly last night.

Vicente de Bosque opted for the defensive quartet he mainly favoured over the qualifiers, with right-back Juanfran, who sets you back 5.5, the cheapest option in defence. The Atletico Madrid man was replaced at the break by Hector Bellerin (5.0), though, and bearing in mind that the latter played from start to finish in the previous two, there’s perhaps enough doubts over Juanfran’s pitch time to reconsider his acquisition.

Elsewhere at the back, Gerard Pique – owned by 11% compared to Sergio Ramos’ 29% – proved the greatest close-range threat for the home side and fired three attempts inside the box. David de Gea, meanwhile, was handed his first start in four, though admits he is still uncertain over starting berth given that Del Bosque has now fielded a different keeper in each of the last three.

Despite firing 17 attempts on goal, Spain managed a mere three shots on target, with Del Bosque’s decision to opt for Aritz Aduriz over the in-form Alvaro Morata up front failing to pay off. Given that the former managed a single attempt on goal, Morata will fancy his chances of returning to the XI for the first group match with Czech Republic.

Del Bosque once again opted for Nolito on the left flank. The Celta Vigo man was unable to replicate the form that harvested back-to-back braces against Bosnia and South Korea, he was still joint-top for attempts on goal (three).

The likes of David Silva and Andres Iniesta were afforded second-half sub roles by Del Bosque. The former teed up three scoring chances in just 38 minutes but his team-mates failed to convert.

Spain XI De Gea; Juanfran (Bellerin 46), Ramos (San Jose 46), Pique, Alba; Fabregas (Iniesta 46), Busquets (Pedro 76), Alcantara (Koke 46); Vazquez (Silva 61), Aduriz, Nolito

How many of you are against picking players who play against each other in the first game? So for example, Bonucci vs De Bruyne.

Is Nolito nailed in XI ?

  8. Do The Friendlies Matter?
    • 10 Years
    9 years, 10 months ago

In the recent weeks, while making their Euro Fantasy teams, managers have been highly influenced by players' performances in the friendlies. In example, Alaba had been an extremely popular pick until the day he scored a bizzare own goal against Malta. Even though he was almost in every Rate My Team at the beginning, after that incident, the Austrian began to be completly ignored by the fantasy managers.

Therefore, we need to ask ourselves a question: are the friendlies of any significance and are they really a decent indicator of form for the teams that will be participating in the Euros?

Yesterday Spain lost 0-1 to Georgia. Meanwhile, Georgia was beaten by Poland 4-0 in the qualifiers, both at home and on road. Does it mean that:

    a) Poland is better than Spain and we are going to win the Euros
    b) Spain are even worse than in 2014
    c) Georgia didn't give a flying monkey about the qualifiers as they prepared their form for the friendlies?

You guessed it - none of the above. The friendlies were never and never will be treated seriously ahead of big tournaments. The least that those national teams care about is the result. The most important thing is to avoid injuries and build the understanding between players.

Yes, fantasy managers can get some ideas about how the starting XI's of some teams are going to look like in the tournament itself. However, rarely we are given a straight answer; i.e. Nolito played in all friendlies, played well (scored 4 in 3 games), yet he is still a doubt. The same can apply to the likes of Draxler, Pazdan, Wawrzyniak/Jędrzejczyk and many others.

The next thing is that, in my opinion, stats from the friendlies should also rather be ignored by the fantasy managers. As mentioned above, teams look to avoid injuries - the best players are not rushing into 50/50 challenges, not to mention the teams they play against - scoring bags of goals against San Marino or Luxembourg is hardly a good indicator of excellent form.

Is suddenly getting rid of players who were nailed on in your team from the beginning, only because of a no-show or poor performance in the friendlies, a reasonable decision? Should the fantasy managers treat the friendly games seriously, if yes - why?

      Smart

Good point. I think friendlies are still a decent indicator. Unreliable and unclear, yes, but the best we have to go on.

Taking any player out based on an own goal is daft. Dier scored an own goal recently, and that has no factor in my selection of him.

BUT, if a player starts in all three friendlies, then the likelihood is that the player is a big part of the manager's plans.

If they play incredibly well, their starting chances will improve. If they play poorly their chances will decrease.

Friendlies should be taken seriously, but not literally. A handful of salt is required.

Is it really black or white?

I think you go too far the other way, Johnny O. Friendlies do matter, particularly for teams where there is competition for places. Ie, the ones likely to do well.

    4. Meinhoff
      • 13 Years

Friendlies are not a very reliable indicator, but are the only indicator at this point, obviously it will have a certain effect on each of our teams

        • 10 Years
        9 years, 10 months ago

True, but it still shouldn't have, in my opinion, the following effect: "Austria struggled against Malta and Alaba scored an own goal, therefore I need to get rid of him as soon as possible". And this seemed to be the pattern not only with Alaba, but with many other options.

    5. Camp No No

I globally agree, particularly in that the form in friendlies should bear little to no effect our decision-making.

But I think there's a mistake in concluding from the mostly correct proposition that "the teams do not care about the results of the friendlies" a completely different one, "the teams do not take the friendlies seriously." The more their preparation relies on the friendlies, the more seriously the managers in particular take them to improve tactics, try players and see who combine well etc. Also, the players may take them seriously as chances to show their worth.

I notice that you also do say this, I just wanted to emphasise that we can get this kind of information from the friendlies, and that for this reason the friendlies are important to follow. For example, on the basis of the qualifiers alone, Nolito and Giaccherini would hardly even be options. And there are others whose absence from the first XI is affirmed by their secondary role in friendlies. Say, nobody should take uefa.com's word that Sissoko will start for France. While the Georgia result itself is little important, the match shows us some of the tactical options that Del Bosque could use. That is not nothing.

        • 10 Years
        9 years, 10 months ago

I do agree that the sentence "the teams do not take the friendlies seriously" needs rephrasing. Obviously, it's not the same as not caring about the result, and my arguments above even proved that they do care about the friendlies but only in the context of better chemistry and gaining fitness plus momentum before the tournament.

Nolito and Giaccherini became, indeed, decent options completly out of the blue. But what mostly confuses me is the number of fantastic picks many ignore only due to their poor form in the friendlies.

Yup. As said, I largely agree with you. I guess that was mostly just semantics. There's just sometimes here this tendency to go from "friendly results do not predict tournament results" to "nothing can be concluded from friendlies" (you don't do this though), so that phrase caught my eye.

      Form is important

Not so sure on these new stats though, old qualifiers are probably more worthless as are those against really poor teams.

    Stanciu vs Dzemalli?

    A) Rodriguez, De Bruyne & Stanciu
    B) Bonucci, De Bruyne & Mak
