Saturday’s events end with a collision between two sides scrapping for a Euro 16 foothold.

Austria arrived in France with a laudable record in qualifying and were considered a darkhorse. But Marcel Koller’s men were found wanting in their opening fixture, frustrated and eventually overwhelmed by the Hungarians.

That 2-0 defeat means that tonight’s meeting with Portugal is now more vital than ever.

Fernando Santos’ side are also in dire need of the victory.

They were unable to overcome an Icelandic barrier to earn victory in their opening group encounter and now found themselves on the back foot. Defeat to Austria would swing the group wide open, leading to a dramatic final round of matches later this week.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Italy and Spain are likely to rotate so Alba, Chiellini and maybe even Nolito are a little bit risky.

Had Juanfran thought alba was more secure. Guess question marks over both. Surely no threat to chiellini, that's why I'm paying extra. Guess your right about nolito, just looked so good.

With rotation in mind and the state of the groups, this is what I have come up with for a GW3 WC. Would appreciate your thoughts, gents.

    Patricio/Fabianski Tatarusanu

    Hector Pazdan Guerrero Giacherrini Meunier

    KDB Kroos Alaba Payet Duda

    Ronaldo Bale Milik

Germany coverage against NI. Poland coverage against Ukraine who have only pride to play for. Bales vs that Russian defence, Ronaldo to break the shackles and smash Hungary, KDB against the Swedes who will need to go all out on atack. Kroos/Alaba on set pieces.

My problem with triple german defence is that I will need at least 1.5 million more. And tbh, Germany have been extremely lucky to have not conceded in this tournament. Boateng in game 1 and Milik's miss in game 2 would have been goals on any other day.

Price rise is overhyped. Forget it. Go for potential pts instead which is the main objective of this game, no?

Yes Gia rotation is definitely a risk. Also, with Bonucci and Chielleni rested, Italy might just concede. Who would you get in place of Gia?

Looking at how the knockout brackets work and it seems that winning groups ABCD will be a huge advantage as that means a 3rd place team as opponent, whereas winners of groups EF play runners up.

So don't France and Spain have plenty to play for? Not sure why they would be rotating a ton.

I don't agree though. We are just assuming getting to top their group at the expense of exhausting their key players would give them an advantage in meeting a "weaker" opponent, when what we've seen in this tournament so far, is that there are no clear favourites at all.

You are possibly just weakening yourself and meet a "weaker" opponent, and then get booted out unexpectedly and then ask yourself why is this happening later.

If France wins their group, they will have 7 days of rest before their Round of 16 match. How long time do you think they'll need to rest to not be exhausted?

This. The 1st Round of 16 give teams in E & F 3 days rest, the rest get 4 or more. Not exactly exhausting. Plus if you win your league you get easier opponents.

            1. Lynxy
              • 10 Years

Some players takes months to fully recover from their full season of football. Kane in last early season brings to mind.

We're not professional players. Each person's time to "fully recover" differs.

              1. Camp No No
                • 12 Years
                10 years, 1 month ago

Look, it seems you're convinced and your opinion won't budge, but if a player needs so long time to fully recover then he shouldn't be in the EC in the first place. We're talking about players who have been very in form in this tournament, they are not in need for a long rest after the season now. And then, players themselves say that to keep up the tournament form, they prefer to play every 3-4 days rather than to take over week long breaks.
