Great Expectations

Our series of summer articles focussing on those players we have high hopes for in the campaign ahead gets underway this morning with a look at Roberto Firmino.

Much was expected of the Brazilian after he arrived at Liverpool on the back of 23 goals and 21 assists in his final two seasons with Hoffenheim. Despite splashing out over £20m for his services, Brendan Rodgers handed Firmino just three starts in the opening eight fixtures before being replaced by Jurgen Klopp.

While the new boy took some time to get to grips with English football, his development under the tutelage of Klopp was particularly impressive.

Notching for the first time in a 4-1 demolition of Man City in Gameweek 13, Firmino ended the campaign with 10 goals and eight assists in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Played in a number of different attacking roles under Klopp, Firmino emerged as a key player during the second half of the campaign and looks set to maintain that role as the German prepares for his first full season at the helm.

KEY FACTORS

  • A total of 155 points from 31 appearances in his first season at Anfield represented a solid return from the Brazilian, who averaged 5.0 points per league outing. Delve a little deeper into the data under Klopp, though, and Firmino served up 5.8 points per game with the German on board – a tally only bettered by Riyad Mahrez (6.0) in the centre of the park last season.
  • Firmino’s versatility is key to his appeal given Klopp’s willingness to switch formations during matches. In those thrilling away wins at Man City and Chelsea, he flourished in the “false nine” role, but with Divock Origi developing rapidly during the Europa League campaign and Daniel Sturridge back to full fitness, he may have to drop a little deeper. A central support berth looks the likeliest scenario at this point, though even if he’s stationed as a number ten, Firmino’s goal conversion rate of 15.9% – the fifth highest amongst midfielders with more than five goals – highlights his capabilities.
  • Liverpool’s failure to qualify for Europe means that their Fantasy assets are far less likely to be prone to the rotation that blighted the final few months of their previous campaign. As we saw in 2013/14 with Rodgers’ Liverpool, and with Leicester last season, being able to concentrate solely on domestic matters can bring huge advantages. Klopp’s Gegenpressing tactics also rely on players to be fresh in order to carry out his game plan out of possession, so playing once a week for large parts of the season should enable the German to keep a settled starting XI – music to the ears of FPL bosses.
  • A lack of summer football should work in Firmino’s favour. Whilst Philippe Coutinho was part of Brazil’s Copa America exploits, Firmino was omitted from the squad and will also skip the summer Olympics. At a time when many of the big-hitters have been on international duty, he’ll be fully refreshed and raring to go when the campaign gets underway.
  • Given he ultimately ended last term in fifteenth place amongst midfielders – some 85 points behind Mahrez at the summit – it seems highly unlikely that Firmino will be elevated into the premium bracket next time around. Having started last term at 8.5, a move to 9.0 is perhaps on the cards, which may well prove excellent value for money if he can maintain that sort of form under Klopp.
  • Liverpool’s opening schedule is hardly the most appealing, with a home clash against Burnley sandwiched in between trips to Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea and a visit from champions Leicester in the first five Gameweeks. Nonetheless, it’s worth bearing in mind that Firmino produced returns against three of the latter four opponents last season – failing to feature in either match against Spurs – and, having bagged two double-figure hauls against the likes of Man City, has the fixture-proof potential to get his campaign off to a strong start.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic - Which side are you on?

Now that we know which teams will play who and on which side of the EURO 2016 draw, how much of that is driving your transfer decisions?

Previously I'd have been looking towards doubling or tripling on the likes of Spain, Italy and Germany. Now I'm considering just 4 players from those 3 teams and am looking at doubling or tripling on teams like Wales, Croatia and Belgium.

Are you playing the team, the fixtures or a bit of both?

For those with wildcards are you thinking about the quarter finals and beyond or making a team for the last 16 only?

The way the draw has fallen has really benefited those who held wildcarding
I didn't but had a great GW3 so swings and roundabout

Have to focus on teams who look the most likely to get through to quarters with only 4 transfers & 8 after that

I held mine. The way I've built my team it could still be decent for QF but a few upsets and I won't be so sure.

The only problem with the QF is it's likely Germany will face one of Italy/Spain so we'll still not know necessarily who to bet on.

Since , I don't have my WC , I am playing the fixtures more than the team. I have Belgians atm - Muenier , Vertonghen , Hazard and Lukaku. Also , I have 2 Welsh players - Ramsey and Hennessey.

But I am also playing the 'team' in Spain as they look like the favourites to win the Euros in my eyes. I own Morata and DDG from their team.

Lastly , I am playing a bit of both the team and fixtures with England. I own Cahill , Walker and Alli as I really can't see Iceland scoring.

Too many eggs in not enough baskets and no WC to clean up the mess if it all goes wrong

Basically Wales, Belgium, England, Spain with 5 players on the last day with no sub options to sort out blanks ?

Burned toast I say, burned toast ....

I think it will all come down to what we have left after this and the next round - if you have a full squad of playing players with your free transfers then you have nailed it with the early WC ... That is/was effectively the punt for everyone

No goals have killed me rather than WC options though

It is all fun and good luck !

If Belgium and Wales their easy match-ups , half my team has already qualified for the Quarter Finals. I think I will be able to manage but definitely , the WCers have a big advantage over me. Good luck NMG! 🙂

That is the benefit of still having the WC, a no risk punt on the likes of Wales.

Only issue I see you having is the Wales v Belgium 1/4 and Spain or England get knocked out

England also look like a banker to me vs Iceland. Not worried about them but yeah , there might be upsets and I might get in trouble. Its a risk I have to take. 🙂

Agreed, England, Wales & Belgium should be favourites to go though - I would be doing something similar without a WC but perhaps not having 5 DG3 assets

What are your thoughts on the Italian defence, especially given the Conte in your name 🙂

For me they looked solid in the first 2 games. Spain are obviously a great attack - I wonder if it could be a bit of a stalemate

        1. Eden Hazardous
          • 11 Years
          10 years, 1 month ago

I don't see Italy scoring more goals than Spain and that means even if they restrict Spain to no goals in the first 90 minutes , they have to endure another 30 minutes - which is quite unlikely.

While considering defence , one also has to consider the attack of the team and Italy look really poor in that regard. I would rather go with the easy CSs (like England , Belgium , France etc.) than risk on Italian defenders. Giaccherini is the only one worth punting on as he might be withdrawn much before the 120th minute mark , but as I am without a WC , I won't be.

I was derided for saying so before the Euros started but Müller does tend to come alive in the knockout stages of a tournament.

So far he has scored 5 goals from 12 starts in the World Cup and Euro group stages. 3 of those goals came in one game against Portugal in 2014 when Portugal had a man sent off in the first half.

His record in the knockout stages is 5 goals in 7 starts.

He is doing fine so far on chance creation and shots on target. I think there's a very decent chance he'll come good. So, Müller is the German attacker of choice for me.

It will. I expect Nicola Sturgeon to announce that this morning. The only issue is that I cant see the result being any different. The reason indy ref failed the first time is that 73% of the 65+ wanted to remain. I cannot see those votes changing.

Not been on here much, so idea who people favour or not. So would appreciate thoughts on my team below:

    Hennessey Rui Patricio
    Cahill Hector Juanfran Glik Rami
    Payet Perisic Ramsey Ozil Kroos
    Giroud Lukaku Ronaldo
    £0.3ITB

So far only did Nolito & Alli > Kroos Ronaldo

Absolutely buzzing with GW3 - Finished 86 points and rank 17 for the GW. Currently sitting on 202 points overall @ around rank 160.

First draft of team moving forward (Wildcard used)

    Hennessey/ Hart
    Hector/Jed/Meunier/Rami/Dier
    Hazard/Perisic/Ramsey/Payet/Ozil
    Gomez/Lukaku/Bale

1.1 ITB. Any inputs into this initial team?

    Thanks 🙂

Taking a risk staying away from German players but what would be a good team working around that

Spain double defence too risky ? (one is ddg so can swap for hart)

Worked like a treat in first 2 games. .

Think italy would play for a 0-0 or 1-0 while spain dominated the whole match

Arent the England and Spain game the same day so you cant swap Hart & DDG?

Won't double up on Spanish defence. If they go through then Germany and then France.

Kroos + Muller or Ozil + Lukaku

Of course I could go Kroos and Lukaku too and have 1.5m leftover

I'd go Ozil + Lukaku. Picking between Ozil and Kroos is difficult, I don't know why everyone is picking Muller though. What indications have there been that he's going to start scoring highly?

Kroos Muller for me.. Fancy them against slovaks. hungary should give belgiums a good fight

Im going with Kroos and double german defence though

Hungary should give them a good fight but they've shown they concede goals. Slovakia stopped England playing by packing men behind the ball, I imagine them doing the same against Germany and going for the counter.

      Ozil + Lukaku

Kroos is playing very deep for my liking and Muller is not in his finest form.

    A) DDG, McGovern & Ramsey
    B) Hennessey, Subasic & Ramsey
    B) Neuer, Hennessey & Dzsudzsak

    Walker or Dier or Giacherini?

    Ronaldo & Kroos
    Lukaku/Giroud & Ozil

Which site do u all use to check predicted lineups?

Every predicted lineup I am checking for England has no Alli in it

I use my head. Henderson and Wilshere out, Rooney and Alli back in. That is pretty self-evident as far as I can see. Whether Kane gets back in is a more teasing question.

Who are the safest German defenders in terms of starting the match against Slovakia? Guessing Hector and Hummels are 2 of them, is Boateng fit?

I'd go A) because I don't know if Nolito is a definite starter. Don't think I fancy Spanish forwards against a tough Italy defence though
