Next up in our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, are Sunderland.

To get underway, we cast an eye over the Wearsiders’ team statistics under Sam Allardyce and compare them to both the rest of the Premier League and the first eight Gameweeks prior to the departure of Dick Advocaat. After that, we then delve into the data to assess their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources as we look to gain insight on their prospects for the season ahead.

After picking up three points – thanks to a trio of draws – in the opening eight Gameweeks, Advocaat’s decision to quit the club saw Big Sam appointed at the helm. The former West Ham boss took a while to steady the ship, though, and helped stave off the threat of relegation by embarking on a run that saw his side lose just twice in the final 14 league fixtures to finish two points ahead of the drop zone.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Jakupovic, DDG
Friend, Terry, Shaw, Paredes, Funes Mori
    Hazard, Feghouli, Eriksen, Townsend, Fletcher
    Aguero, Ibra, Gray

Double United defence a slight concern
    Funes Mori- starting status
    Feghouli/Fletcher good enough?

These are my main concerns atm.
    What do ye think?

I can see the logic for the United defensive double-up but you run the risk of being hamstrung if Martial/Mkhi get off to a flier. Wouldn't risk it myself.

    "Assists

Assists are awarded to the player from the goal scoring team, who makes the final pass before a goal is scored. An assist is awarded whether the pass was intentional (that it actually creates the chance) or unintentional (that the player had to dribble the ball or an inadvertent touch or shot created the chance)."

This is how it should have been in the Euro game.

Apart from Hull in GW2, Swansea have a tough opening 6 games especially the home ones. They are already dreadful away fom home. Anyone worried by that when considering Siggy and Ayew who look like good value for money?

I think it's actually pretty hard to call fixture difficulty at the start of the season. Some teams will start strong others will struggle. We don't know who will be this year's Leicester, or this year's Man U.

On the other hand Siggy is a tried and tested fantasy asset, possibly somewhat undervalued due to lacklustre season from Swansea last year?

Word. Here's my team, Rate it, rubbish it or revere it:

    Foster Boruc
    Shaw Bailly VVD Kone Robertson
    Payet Nolito Mane Siggy Elmo
    Zlatan Ighalo Rondon

    1. fiveyears

      Okay, here we go... 😉

      - Boruc and Robertson (low CS potential for Hull and Bmouth) > Heaton, Boro defender maybe?
      - Bailly (don't double up this early) > Chelsea def/Spurs/Baines
      - Mane > Firmino, then Nolito > 9.5.
      - No Ighalo to start with (awful fixtures), Gray or another 6.5. If you downgrade to 6.5 then KDB for Nolito is possible too I think

      Hope that's helpful....

Pulis plays centre backs at full back.

This means Schlupp is probably going to be signed as a left mid.

      Oop?

Dawson is the only full back that's a CB. Brunt isn't a CB, he's a God.

Brunt being injured last season had me used to the 4 centre backs 😀

Schlupp could outgod Brunt if Oop

who I might not end up finding a home for, though swapping him for Baines leaves me £££ for Sanchez

So I was just thinking there's always an argument of Fixtures over form.

As we don't really know who's on form at the start of the season, surely it's always better to go with fixtures?

Would say go with fixtures to start with, then get in-form players as they emerge.

For me defence = purely fixtures
Attack = how well you think the team they are in will do in their fixtures eg. Liverpool v aresnal is a hard fixture but I think they will still score

Apologies if this has been asked a lot, but where do we expect Fabregas to play. I don't know Conte particularly well, but I understand he favours 2 up front. If so would it be:

4-3-1-2 (seems likely) or 3-5-2 (seems less likely).

Either way he plays in the deeper midfield position, either alongside or rotating with Kante and Matic.

I was tempted by him at £7.5, but I don't see a #10 slot in Conte's formation, and I'm not keen on spending that much on someone miles from goal.

    Any thoughts?

He's played 4-2-4 in both pre season games

But that also leaves Fabregas in the double pivot, surely?

And it also leaves him in rotation with Matic (if he stays), Kante, Mikel, maybe even Loftus-Cheek.

        Don't see the attraction.

Decent. Although lacking strength in depth. Baines is past it, isn't he?

    Thoughts on this team?

    Foster Mandanda
    Shaw Baines Friend Evans Paredes
    Mhkitaryan Hazard Coutinho Bolasie Hojbjerg
    Aguero Costa Wilson

I know the defence is weak and I'm thinking of downgrading one of the midfielders to upgrade the defence.

Ayew vs Siggy is so annoying to pick.
Siggy on set pieces but Ayew might play more of an upfront role

If you choose one of their attackers and they blank gw1 at home to Watford, you're then in a sticky situation ahead of them about to play at old Trafford gw2

£2.5m more than Rooney is a hard pill to swallow.

Whatever you think about Wayne, he'll be playing as a ~9.5 surrounded by Zlatan, Mikky, Martial, Pogba. He will get points.

Bit of an issue for me that I don't see United, Spurs, Everton, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea or West Ham keeping a clean sheet gw1.

Doesn't feel right to start the season with >5mil defenders on the bench..

Yeah, I know, it's not that simple. He will stop attacking after he goes 2-0 up though. Or just nail weak opposition 4-0. But still lots of clean sheets.
