Liverpool’s busy summer in the transfer market continued last week with the signing of Newcastle United midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum for a fee reportedly worth up to £25 million.

The 25-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year contract with the Reds, and speaking to the club’s official website, expressed how much he was looking forward to linking up with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp:

“I’m really excited because Liverpool is a big club with a great history and it’s always a dream to play for as big a club as Liverpool. [He seems] a great man – from the outside – because I don’t know how he works yet and I have to work with him. [But] I always love to watch him, his passion as a trainer, I like how he enjoys the game. He gives something back to the group [with his passion] so I look forward to working with him.”

The History

Born in Rotterdam, Holland, Wijnaldum began his youth career at Sparta Rotterdam before moving to Feyenoord at the age of 14. He quickly progressed to the first-team and made his debut against FC Groningen in April 2007.

Wijnaldum would stay at Feyenoord until 2011, racking up 135 appearances in all competitions, scoring 25 goals and registering 11 assists.

In June 2011, Wijnaldum moved to fellow Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in a deal reportedly worth €5 million. Over the next four seasons, the midfielder established himself as a key player for PSV, and was made club captain ahead of the 2013/14 campaign. The following year saw Wijnaldum lead the club to their first league title since 2008, and in total he bagged an impressive 56 goals and 24 assists from 154 matches in all competitions.

Last summer, Newcastle moved to sign the Dutchman for a fee of around £14.5 million, and he enjoyed a good season statistically, scoring 11 goals and providing five assists in 38 Premier League appearances. Nonetheless, the Magpies endured a difficult season, which culminated in them being relegated to the Championship.

Having scored 20 goals in 57 appearances at youth level for Holland from Under 17 upwards, Wijnaldum made his senior debut in an 11-0 win against San Marino in September 2011, scoring as a second-half substitute. He was an important member of their 2014 World Cup squad which secured a third place finish, and currently has 30 caps and six goals to his name.

The Prospects

Upon completing the signing of Wijnaldum, Reds boss Klopp revealed the Dutch international’s versatility was a key factor behind adding another midfield player to his squad:

“He can play a few positions for us and players that come through the Dutch system usually have a good tactical understanding and flexibility. That’s really important.”

Last term and during pre-season thus far, Klopp has largely switched between 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 formations. In the 4-2-3-1, Wijnaldum could feature on the left wing, as a number ten or even in the double-pivot, while he could play as either a left-sided attacker in a 4-3-3 or as the most attack-minded player in a three-man midfield.

The German already had plenty of great options for the attacking midfield positions, with Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana, while Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi provide strong striking options.

Given that the likes of Emre Can, Jordan Henderson and James Milner are all vying for positions in central midfield, Fantasy managers will be eagerly awaiting the Dutchman’s likely impact on Klopp’s team sheet. There’s the possibility that Klopp could adopt a “horse for courses” approach next time out, though a lack of European competition will hopefully limit the rest and rotation policy brought in at the end of the previous season.

Wijnaldum’s strong goal scoring record throughout his career will provide Klopp with a different option, though, particularly in the 4-3-3 system where he excelled at PSV. In terms of minutes per shot last year, Firmino (32.7 minutes) and Mane (31.5) were far quicker rate than Wijnaldum’s 61.7, albeit in a struggling Newcastle side.

Impressively, his 20.4% goal conversion rate was superior to any Liverpool player and means that the Merseysiders now boast three of the nine midfielders (along with Firmino and Mane) who scored at least ten times in 2015/16. Ultimately, given that the latter two can also play as “false nines”, they look the most enticing Fantasy prospects at this point until we get a better idea of Klopp’s intentions.

It’s likely the former Newcastle player will be priced at around 8.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), slightly cheaper than both Mane (9.0) and Firmino (8.5) and on a par with Coutinho. Liverpool players might not be in huge demand at the start of the season though, with the Reds facing three tough away matches in the opening five Gameweeks (ars, bur, tot, LEI, che).

We’ll need to assess Klopp’s teamsheets over the opening Gameweeks before being in a position to trust the Dutchman as a viable Fantasy option. Should Klopp favour a 4-3-3 system this season, with Wijnaldum lining up as the most advanced of the midfield three, there is certainly potential for him to flourish in his new surrounds.

Everyone saying Mirallas and Deulefeu aren't nailed, but who's going to play instead of them?

You've got to remember Martinez did some strange things - Kone, Cleverly and Oviedo in wide positions. I'd trust Koeman not to do that. 🙂

Arnie coming in would obviously be a different story. 🙁

Pretty sure a first XI would be:
            Rom
            Kev Ross Gerry
            DMs
            Defence
            GK

But there's youngsters in there, so Gerry would just go wide.

I agree at the moment that looks like the likely lineup. Just waiting to see what koeman thinks his best 11 is really.

The fact he is trying to sign another mid may mean that neither are nailed.

So a lot people seem to be confused by the Liverpool defensive set up for the coming season.

I am be no means an expert, but I listen to a lot of podcasts and the consensus seems to be as follows:

    Karius

    Clyne Matip Sakho Moreno

Lovren is left-footed but can play at RCB too, where is Matip is more of a natural RCB, although, confusingly, can also play LCB.

    Klevin is a LCB

Sakho also got the number 3 shirt, which may not mean anything, but it would very odd if he got that shirt and was not first choice.

I know Sakho has apparently been 'sent home' from the US tour but I am sure it is because of his injury and Klopp wants him back at Anfield medical, the media make a meal out of anything.

  18. A maverick rotation for the masses
    MrMaverick

For the kind folks that asked

The teams I've chosen for this rotation are Watford, Stoke, Sunderland, Leicester and Middlesbrough. Clean sheets are becoming increasingly scarce as the quality in midtable sides (Payet etc) increases. The aforementioned clubs have been selected as they will often deploy defensive minded tactics and offer a regular source of clean sheets, whilst also freeing up funds to invest heavily in your attack.

Now, I know people will be unsure of Watford as a whole going into the new season. New manager. Perhaps not the most inspiring signings. An underwhelming end to last season. Yet Walter Mazzarri promises clean sheets. The 3-5-2 formation, which I will come onto with Stoke later, is a formation that becomes five at the back without possession, and even in possession, it is three centre backs usually up against the lone striker playing a 4231. Watford's fixtures aren't particularly tempting at the start of the season yet I'd invest in a wingback (one of Zuniga/Dje-Djedje/Holebas/Nyom I'd imagine). Yes, it is going against the grain a bit but I honestly believe Watford can shut out both Southampton and Chelsea in GW1 and GW2.

My reasoning with regards to the 3-5-2 is also why I've selected Stoke for this rotation. Mark Hughes has trialled the formation in both of their pre season friendlies and, although nothing is certain, is expected to deploy it come 13th August.

I plan to start the season with a defence of WAT/STO/BORO/WBA with Wasilweski as bench fodder. Sunderland and Leicester have been included in this sample as I plan to bring in Lamine Kone and Wes Morgan when their fixtures ease.

Now to the interesting part. Rotation. Watford, Stoke, West Brom and Boro all have GW1s in which a clean sheet is possible. WBA, Boro and Stoke all start the season with favourable fixtures, which inevitably increases their CS potential. I plan to go 3-5-2 this season so it would work like this with a three at the back system:

    GW1 : SOU/MID/PAL
    GW2: CHE/EVE/SUN

Now, back to GW2 here. Watford home to Chelsea? Surely that's a long shot for a CS? No, not in my opinion. Chelsea's 442 shape has looked reassured in defensive transition but lacking an edge in their attacking play, and Watford will have 3 CBs marking Chelsea's two forwards, with wingbacks providing further defensive support. West Brom's encounter against Everton could be deemed a risky bet for CS points, but it is worth remembering they did keep a CS against the Goodison outfit last season, and the Baggies rearguard will only be strengthened by the return of Ben Foster.

    GW3: EVE/MID/WBA
    GW4: WHU/BOU/PAL
    GW5: MU*/PAL/EVE
*Again, I back Watford to be up there with Chelsea in terms of CS come May. Same applies for Stoke if they continue with a 3-5-2

    GW6: BUR/STO/PAL
By GW6, Boro's fixtures will significantly harden, while Sunderlands' will ease. This is when I plan to transfer out George Friend in favour of Lamine Kone. Sunderland, who I expect to be defensively resilient under David Moyes, face Palace, West Brom and Stoke in their next three. You'd also have your WBA up against Stoke, so if one of your attackers had a particularly difficult fixture, four at the back would seem timely.

    GW7: BOU/SUN/WBA

Now, I currently have 0.5m ITB and plan to use it come GW8, when I will transfer out Gareth McAuley, who's fixtures significantly harden from then onwards, to one of Simpson, Morgan or Huth for their run of favourable fixtures ahead.

I hope you found this useful.

I'd think zuniga would be nailed, worked with mazzarri at Napoli and was a signing he really pushed for by all accounts. Nyom doesn't strike me as a wing-back tbf, I'd say Dja-Djedje at RWB and Zuniga LWB atm. Maz wouldn't have signed Dja-Djedje if he was happy with the options available to him

tough one, I'd definitely keep an eye on the latter stages of preseason. If I did have any doubt over Zuniga's nailedness come the 13th, Britos all day for GW1. Mazz's Napoli played some good stuff but I reckon they'll play on the break this season, absorb pressure etc

      Interesting post,
The problem you have with a back 3 is when it comes up against teams that use a lot of width, full backs bomb on and if you have wide forwards the wing backs can be outnumbered, also teams that transition quickly and keep their wide players fowards should have some success against a back 3.

If Chelsea dont sign another 2 cbs I think they'll start with a back four and expect full backs to attack where possible. This could lead to problems for Watford. You'd also imagine Everton would have a similar strategy.

Reckon Jonathan Leko could be a gem at 4.5 this season, he destroyed full-backs when he got his chance towards the end of last season. Depends if Pulis thinks he's ready or not.

Also, Feghouli at 5.5 looks like a bargain. I'm convinced it's a trap though.

    1. THE REAL RON ⚽
      • 9 Years

He's not really what you want from a 4.5 - he needs to be nailed.

A 17 year old isn't going to play a full Prem season just like that. And WBA have decent competition on the wings.

      1. Worzel Gummidge
        9 years, 11 months ago

TBH he is miles better than who they have IMO. Mclean FFS 🙂

He might be in the future, but he's 17. He'll be inconsistent.

McClean, McMannaman, Phillips, Brunt, Morrison, Gardner are all more experienced, safer choices. And this is Pulis we're talking about! 😛

Not saying he won't be a good pick for a period, but he's not a 4.5 buy and forget.

I would disagree regarding "decent competition" on the wings at WBA. Regardless, there aren't too many nailed 4.5 mids and those who are will only get you a point or two when you are forced to play them (They only get a goal/assist when sat on your bench, let's be real here). It's worth taking a risk on a young exciting winger who could have a breakout season IMO.
