Up next in our series of members articles, which assess the statistics behind the 2015/16 season, is Watford.

We start off by looking at the Hornets’ team data in Quique Sanchez Flores’ solitary campaign at the helm and compare them to the rest of Premier League. After that, we analyse their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources in an attempt to gain insight on their prospects for the season ahead.

Tipped for the drop by many last time out, the Hornets were quick out the traps and racked up eight wins and five draws in the first 18 Gameweeks. Although Flores’ side failed to maintain momentum over the rest of the season and managed just four victories and as many draws in the final 20 matches, they were never in danger of relegation and ended in thirteenth spot, eight points clear of the bottom three.

Right. It is starting to come down to this:

    1) Barks
    2) Miralles
    3) Dellboy

I am starting to think Barks will do best when Lukaku returns. Caveat: based on nothing.

Every season (and I mean every season) I get off to a very, very poor start!
I'm always ca. 1-2 million after 5-7 game weeks and then it's a slow slog to 5-10k by season end.

I use to think it was luck but after 10+ years I'd surely would have had one good start. Anyway, feels the same again this year, like I'm not learning.

With the above in mind, am I making the same old mistakes?

    Foster Jakupovic
    Williams Stones Friend McAuley Souaré

I really like it- everything is solid. Maybe downgrade Williams to Fernandez and upgrade Fischer to Bojan or something...

        2. Ruth_NZ

OK, here's one of my (rare) RMTs. You asked for it. 🙂

Jakupovic is a waste of space as are all Hull. Heaton will be useful to rotate with Foster. Cost -0.5m.

Williams, Friend, McAuley are OK but I think Taylor, Ayala, Evans are better picks from the same clubs at neutral cost. Souare needs to be Dann if you want Palace and Stones is a waste, let's go for VVD for his 3 great early home games. Cost -1.5m but a rock solid defensive rotation for the first 5 weeks at least and with good goal threat in there.

In the midfield, KDB and Aguero is overkill in my opinion so KDB becomes Eriksen who is a must in my book. Siggy rather than Ayew. Fletcher rather than Capoue though that's minor. Mkhi is probably a good pick if no Rooney/Ibra, I'll come back to that. Fischer is a big punt, I'd prefer Redmond or Townsend. Let's say Townsend as Palace have a great run of fixtures. That saves 1.0m overall so we are now -1.0m.

Upfront - Aguero is OK. Kane is over-priced compared to Costa and you have no Chelsea representation despite them having a pretty ideal first 4 weeks. So, Costa for Kane. And lastly I'd prefer Gray to Wilson for the opening games. 1.5m saved so 0.5m saved overall.

If Benteke moves to Palace I'd downgrade Townsend to Redmond and upgrade Gray to Benteke. That would use the spare 0.5m.

Back to Mkhi - what I am suggesting leaves you with Mkhi + Costa but of course that could be Hazard + Rooney instead if you want proven PL players. Personally I'm not convinced of Hazard's FPL potential without penalties and I don't know who Chelsea's penalty taker will be.

          Foster Heaton
          VVD Dann Ayala Evans Taylor
          Mkhi Eriksen Siggy Townsend Capoue
          Aguero Costa Gray

In summary, I think if you want a fast start you have to concentrate on the opening fixtures. 🙂

Interesting article on the BBC website.

Most PL teams are doing 12,000 miles or more of travel pre-season. Some (like Leicester) also did big trips post-season. These long trips and overseas tournaments impair pre-season but are highly lucrative and important for commercial sponsors.

Only 5 teams are doing 2000 miles or less - Burnley, Everton, Hull, Sunderland and Watford. Of those, 4 have (or will have) new managers who will benefit from a coherent pre-season. That makes Everton players more attractive as early picks I think. Sunderland and Watford less so (tougher fixtures) and personally I am currently discounting Hull entirely.

And that leaves Burnley. A concentrated pre-season, stability in the squad, stability with the manager and good opening fixtures (3 of 4 at home). Heaton was a cert for me anyway but I am now considering Andre Gray. I don't think he will be a season keeper by any means but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Burnley make a good start and Gray has been scoring plenty in pre-season.

I'm staying away from Heaton, what is the appeal when Mandanda and Foster are the same price Ruth? Gray is in my watch-list for now.

The appeal is that I expect him to out-perform both of those. Especially at home.

Haven't even looked at fixtures yet to be honest, but you're right - not amazing. Four home games in the first six though, three of those are decent.

I have to say I was delighted when I saw Everton's schedule. Nice to see the new board has backed the manager and not messed up a pre season with these silly trips around the world.

If you were to wildcard in the first 4 weeks would you start with Firmino who seems to perform well against the 'better' teams or play the fixtures and get someone else?

Currently got KDB Mahrez Ayew Townsend Fischer Aguero Zlatan (3-5-2)

    Could do KDB + Fischer -> Firmino + £7.5

IMO an Arsenal side without most of their key players could be devastating. Only trouble is that KDB allows me to easily downgrade to Hazard if need be
