Great Expectations

As evidenced by the success of Grant Holt, Rickie Lambert, Charlie Austin, Jamie Vardy and Odion Ighalo over the past few years, the promoted clubs can often provide us with budget forwards that far outdo their favourable price tags.

After bagging 23 goals and eight assists in Burnley’s Championship winning season, Andre Gray has the potential to be the next one off the conveyor belt.

Signed by Sean Dyche last summer for a club-record fee of around £9 million, Gray has followed a similar path to the likes of Austin and Vardy by working his way through the lower leagues to make it to the top-flight.

Having played a part in 43% of the Clarets’ goals on their way to the Championship title, he looks worthy of serious consideration for our three-man frontlines.

  • Gray has wasted no time in announcing himself to Fantasy managers over the summer period by scoring eight times, including a weekend hat-trick at Rangers. The Premier League’s form forward over pre-season, he’s been both consistent and explosive and found the net in all five of his appearances. Despite a kind 6.5 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he’s shaping up to be a decent differential and is owned by just 10% so far.
  • Last season, Gray averaged a shot every 31.3 minutes, which was slightly better than Southampton’s Shane Long (34.9), who is currently the highest owned forward (15.2%) priced 6.5 and under in FPL. Elsewhere in this bracket, Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson was less impressive in this regard, averaging a shot every 48.2 minutes last term, with West Ham’s Andy Carroll (27.6), Southampton’s Charlie Austin (29.1) and Middlesbrough’s Alvaro Negredo (29.4) the quickest.
  • Gray also impresses in terms of goal conversion. He netted an eye-catching 21.1%of his opportunities in the previous season – superior to the similarly priced Carroll (16.1%), Long (15.6%) and Austin (12.5%), although Wilson did lead the way, with an impressive goal conversion rate of 29.4% last term, albeit from just 13 appearances. His prospects would be boosted if he’s afforded spot-kicks ahead of team-mate Sam Vokes – Gray took five last term, scoring four, though Vokes scored three when his strike partner was on the pitch. Certainly, this would justify the extra outlay comapred to Vokes’ cost of 6.0.
  • Compared to forwards at the other promoted clubs, Gray’s appeal is heightened by a security of starts – Dyche tends to favour consistency of selection and is unlikely to chop and change unnecessarily. The same can’t be said for either Middlesbrough or Hull right now. Aitor Karanka operates with a 4-2-3-1 formation, so while Negredo looks to be the first-choice striker, Jordan Rhodes seems likely to steal minutes off the Spaniard given the ‘Boro manager’s penchant for rotation. With last term’s top scorer Abel Hernandez linked with a move away, few FPL bosses will be prepared to invest in Hull’s attack right now until some sense of stability is restored.
  • Gray’s prospects are boosted by the fact that Burnley are the only team facing four home matches in the first six Gameweeks (SWA, LIV, che, HUL, lei, WAT), due to their Gameweek 2 fixture against Liverpool being reversed as the Reds put the finishing touches to their new Main Stand. The former Brentford forward looks to have the ideal platform to hit the ground running, then, with the fixtures against Swansea, Hull and Watford in particular looking very favourable.

Guys, it's the age old debate between Ibra and a weakened midfield/defence or no Ibra and more balanced team:

A: Ibra, Hazard, Mahrez, Alli, Ibe with a weaker defence of 4.5 players mainly

B: Negredo, Hazard Mahrez, Alli, Martial with a stronger all round defence of mixture of 5.5, 5 and 4.5

I think it depends when you want to WC, If you're thinking of a GW 3/4 WC it would be better throwing your eggs into the attacking basket and ensuring you have at least a starting back 3 with cheap routes into decent teams, then when it comes to WC, spotting who's performing in MID/ATT at a lower price and form a more consistent team for the long haul

      B. Best to spread the £ around, even if Ibra performs well l don't think the incremental value per £ out weights potential gains in other positions.

    Guys,

    1 or 2?:

    Foster/Heaton

    Friend/Soure/Olsson/Terry/Valencia
    Hazard/Mahrez/MKH/Lamela/Capoue
    Aguero/Gray/Austin

    or:

    Foster/Heaton

    Friend/Soure/Olsson/Terry/Valencia
    Hazard/Mahrez/Ayew/Fletcher/Capoue
    Aguero/Ibra/Gray

First is elasticity + strong bench, second might be a perfect first team

    Thanks

      It's basically Mkhi+Pamela+ Austin VS Ibra + Ayew + 4.5

I'd go for B but find 1 million somewhere from your defence and keepers to upgrade that 4.5 to a decent 5.5

      What about ibe?

      Fischer untested at PL level.
Ramirez didn't cut it at Saints in the PL.
      Gradel looked promising until injured.

I reckon all will have double digit moments and lots of 2pts in between, trick will be catching those weeks.

I see Gray & his fixtures & it doesn't fill me with confidence. I look at Negredo & he has much better fixtures especially with Ramirez/Fischer there & even though Negredo could be subbed early & face stiff competition from Rhodes & maybe rotated he seems the better pick.
Pre-season form is misleading. I remember last year & I think West Ham were bad in pre-season & then they were on fire at the start of the season.

But still, should not underestimate the confidence boost for a striker to get in the goals. Although I kinda agree with you, I still think Burnley's style might be better suited against "better" teams when they can counter.

Gabriel (when recovered from his tonsilitis) until a new CB is bought. Based on Wenger's comments and Holding's performances he might be preferred over Chambers.

If a new boy comes in I reckon it'd be him and Gabby.

Andre Gray - classic FPL trap

He maybe a decent punt for the season as a whole but will top the list of most transfers out by international break

Or he'll start with a brace against Swansea and go up to 6.7m

He is a punt, championship stats don't necessary translate to prem.

He is a punt. Like every other 6,5m priced forward.

    RMT please:

    de Gea / Boruc
    Morgan / Dann / Azpilicueta / Shaw / Kolarov
    Hazard / Tadic / Bolasie / Redmond / Sodgrass
    Long / Wilson / Ibra

    Thank you for your thoughts!

      Sodgrass 😀
Defence too expensive - Kolarov needs to go
      Need betetr strikers

Downgrade a mid to a 4.5. Downgrade 2-3 defendera to a 4.0 and 4.5s. I dont see the need in having a 4.5 back up to ddg. Use the monwy to upgrade midfield and attack

Expensive defense and risky not having Kun, maybe save 0.5 by downgrading Boruc to Jaku and downgrade 2 defenders (i would say Kolarov and Dann) to 5 or 4.5 defenders (Williams/Stones/Friend/Pieters) and then finally Redmond and Sodgrass can be downgraded to a 5.5 mid (Gradel/Fischer) and 4.5 mid (Capoue) and you should have enough to upgrade Wilson for Kun.

Bit of help if you could please lads
    DDG (Jaku)
    Stones Shaw Cedric (Parades/Amat)
    Hazard Mkhi Coutinho Shaqiri (Fletcher)
    Aguero Lukaku Gray

I know the defence is really poor and I'm worried about the lack of Özil/Payet (even though both may be absent from GW1)

Any ideas on how to improve?
