Great Expectations

As evidenced by the success of Grant Holt, Rickie Lambert, Charlie Austin, Jamie Vardy and Odion Ighalo over the past few years, the promoted clubs can often provide us with budget forwards that far outdo their favourable price tags.

After bagging 23 goals and eight assists in Burnley’s Championship winning season, Andre Gray has the potential to be the next one off the conveyor belt.

Signed by Sean Dyche last summer for a club-record fee of around £9 million, Gray has followed a similar path to the likes of Austin and Vardy by working his way through the lower leagues to make it to the top-flight.

Having played a part in 43% of the Clarets’ goals on their way to the Championship title, he looks worthy of serious consideration for our three-man frontlines.

  • Gray has wasted no time in announcing himself to Fantasy managers over the summer period by scoring eight times, including a weekend hat-trick at Rangers. The Premier League’s form forward over pre-season, he’s been both consistent and explosive and found the net in all five of his appearances. Despite a kind 6.5 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he’s shaping up to be a decent differential and is owned by just 10% so far.
  • Last season, Gray averaged a shot every 31.3 minutes, which was slightly better than Southampton’s Shane Long (34.9), who is currently the highest owned forward (15.2%) priced 6.5 and under in FPL. Elsewhere in this bracket, Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson was less impressive in this regard, averaging a shot every 48.2 minutes last term, with West Ham’s Andy Carroll (27.6), Southampton’s Charlie Austin (29.1) and Middlesbrough’s Alvaro Negredo (29.4) the quickest.
  • Gray also impresses in terms of goal conversion. He netted an eye-catching 21.1%of his opportunities in the previous season – superior to the similarly priced Carroll (16.1%), Long (15.6%) and Austin (12.5%), although Wilson did lead the way, with an impressive goal conversion rate of 29.4% last term, albeit from just 13 appearances. His prospects would be boosted if he’s afforded spot-kicks ahead of team-mate Sam Vokes – Gray took five last term, scoring four, though Vokes scored three when his strike partner was on the pitch. Certainly, this would justify the extra outlay comapred to Vokes’ cost of 6.0.
  • Compared to forwards at the other promoted clubs, Gray’s appeal is heightened by a security of starts – Dyche tends to favour consistency of selection and is unlikely to chop and change unnecessarily. The same can’t be said for either Middlesbrough or Hull right now. Aitor Karanka operates with a 4-2-3-1 formation, so while Negredo looks to be the first-choice striker, Jordan Rhodes seems likely to steal minutes off the Spaniard given the ‘Boro manager’s penchant for rotation. With last term’s top scorer Abel Hernandez linked with a move away, few FPL bosses will be prepared to invest in Hull’s attack right now until some sense of stability is restored.
  • Gray’s prospects are boosted by the fact that Burnley are the only team facing four home matches in the first six Gameweeks (SWA, LIV, che, HUL, lei, WAT), due to their Gameweek 2 fixture against Liverpool being reversed as the Reds put the finishing touches to their new Main Stand. The former Brentford forward looks to have the ideal platform to hit the ground running, then, with the fixtures against Swansea, Hull and Watford in particular looking very favourable.

    RMT please

    Foster/Jaku
    Shaw/Funes Mori/Pieters/Friend/Lenihan
    Hazard/Mahrez/Tadic/Fischer/Hojbjerg
    Kun/Ibra/Gray

    Where can I improve?

I doubt hojbejerg will give much points. I think his position is more towards defensive midfielder like Wanyama last year. Also I think funes mori is injured? I'm not sure about that. Is Lenihan and Friend sure starter?

I feel this season the forward position doesn't have many enticing prospect in the midrange 7.0-9.0 mil. Interestingl between 7 to 9 are those mainly who aren't sure starter in their respective teams.

    Most of the interesting targets are either among £6.5 mil(Austin,long,grey,negredo,wilson,rhodes etc) {they put the starting price for newly promoted striker pretty high this year. I think Wilson/deeney cost less than 6 last year?} or between 9 and above. (Kane,Vardy,Ibra,Aguero,Lukaku,Giroud). {I'm excluding Deeney and Ighalo due to fixtures}

The most interesting part I feel is the midfield. There are tons of choices and combo to be made across the price from budget, mid-range to premium.

can u pls elaborate on the mid combos pls? 😀

It might not be apparent initially, but there are many interesting prospects in midfield that it is just mind boggling. Try choosing between these, to name a few.

        Mikhtariyan - Hazard - Ozil - Sanchez - KDB - Silva - Firminho - Sane - Martial - Mahrez - Payet

And that's just the 8.5 and above. Not mentioning the deflated Chelsea player prices of between 7-8 mil and the affordable price of spurs and soton mid.

There are so many combinations that can be chosen I'm totally stumped at the moment. Too many talents to pass on.

Going for both Wilson and Gray (who both have good potential for value for money players this season) alongside Aguero, allows for a nice team IMO:

    Courtois - Jakupovic
    Azpilicueta - Shaw - McAuley - Friend - 4.0
    Hazard - Mkhitaryan - Mahrez - Deulofeu - Capoue
    Aguero - Wilson - Gray

    thoughts..?

      like the idea.

Strikers are very expensive this year...

but wouldn´t double up on chelsea, def was pretty weak vs. real madrid for example.
Thinking about Stones (if ManCity)? that would give you 1.0, then perhaps Capue to Ibe for example. Would fit better if playing 352

could work, if Stones at City:
        Azpi ➡ Stones
        Capoue ➡ Fischer / Gradel

Looks nice, not sure about the double up on chelsea def though.. Tons of options if you decide against it, e.g.
      Courtois->Lloris for spurs coverage
      Courtois->Forster (5.0) and upgrade 4.0
      Azpi->Walker (5.5) -> upgrade 4.0

I think I've more or less settled on the core of my team, still some knots to untie though.

    Foster - Jakupovic
    Coleman - Shaw - Pieters - Friend - x1
    Hazard - Eriksen - Tadic - Deulofeu - x2
    Aguero - x2 - Carroll*

    x1 - McAuley or Gabriel:
Gabriel because it might not be wise to double up on WBA defence (but hey, it's Pulis) and Gabriel should start. McAuley because picking Gabriel means more or less 3 nailed big team defenders which means two additional 4.5 defenders might be a bit much (but none of the 4.0m defenders seem nailed).

x2 - Gradel and Gray OR Bojan and Wilson:
I've had Bojan and Wilson for ages but I'm starting to think punting on Deulofeu AND Bojan might be a bit much and I don't want surgery on my team early on. Which is where Gradel comes in, who should be nailed and could be great value BUT I definitely don't want to double up on Bournemouth offence so out goes Wilson for Gray who's had a cracking preseason, should be nailed and has decent opening fixtures (4 home games in the first 6).

    * Carroll is pretty much a placeholder. Another elite striker (10m+) is out of range, Costa/Lukaku/Benteke/Bony might or might not move, Giroud will probably be rested, Batshuayi has been in and out of my team but is at best a rotation risk.

All this leaves me with between 2m and 3m in the bank. I've always been a quick wildcarder and I'm trying to avoid that this year. The money in the bank allows me to react quickly after gw1 without having to go Hannibal on my team. Plus I think good value is hard to find this year in FPL.

    Thoughts, opinions and RMT's welcome!

    PICK ONE:

    A) Eriksen

    B) Mhiki

    C) Martial

    D) Silva

    E) Other - explain why.

I already own Hazard and torn as to who to go alongside him.

      E) Firmino for better value and likely to get similar points throughout the season

I like Firmino but Liverpool's opening fixtures are horrid. I'll likely go with him on the early wilcard.

Tadic - best value for money and on penalties , less competition now that Mane has left

I do like Tadic as a pick and had him in all my drafts up until now. I actually quite fancy Redmond at 6.0 instead. If given the time to improve he could be a shrewd way into the Soton attack. Puel has hinted at Redmond played in a more central role too.

I'll see how they set up in the next two friendlies.

      Today he has no means
      He's alone and anonymous
      But written in his cells
He's got the marks of a genius
      I'm looking for this man
To sell him to other men
To sell him to other men
To make us rich and famous

I heard Mino Raiola humming this classic tune so Robbie must be going places.

    RMT.

    Foster - Jakupovic
    Shaw - Friend - Pieters - Evans - Smith
    Hazard - Deulofeu - Ayew - Tadic - Capoue
    Aguero - Ibrahimovic - Gray

Current crop, 1.0mil in bank, undecided wether to keep for a slight bit of extra flexibility or use the full 100 to upgrade a defender to another 5.5 / 5.0 (Coleman/Morgan).

Zlat makes top heavy teams where money could be better spent elsewhere. Though for a Zlat team sheet l like it. I would spend the mill I. Defense

What do you reckon to this?

    Boruc - Foster
PvA - Stones - Evans - VvD - Funes Mori
    Martial - Firmino - Tadic - Ayew - Fletcher
    Kun - Vardy - Borini

Keeping a close eye on transfers, obviously

Nice seeing Vardy in a team sheet, but l think money better spent on upgrading defence. Martial slightly risky for your premium mid slot

Vardy's just there for the Hull game really. Can't afford to miss out on that!

One reply says too much on defence, the other not enough! What to do?
Had Mkhitaryan until the Martial article convinced me to switch... Happy to take a slight punt on him

Too much invested in defence - you won't be playing 5 defenders
Firmino is the only concern - don't expect too much from him because of too many attacking options at liverpool

Firmino's a must-have in my book. 2nd name on the team sheet after Kun
