Great Expectations

As evidenced by the success of Grant Holt, Rickie Lambert, Charlie Austin, Jamie Vardy and Odion Ighalo over the past few years, the promoted clubs can often provide us with budget forwards that far outdo their favourable price tags.

After bagging 23 goals and eight assists in Burnley’s Championship winning season, Andre Gray has the potential to be the next one off the conveyor belt.

Signed by Sean Dyche last summer for a club-record fee of around £9 million, Gray has followed a similar path to the likes of Austin and Vardy by working his way through the lower leagues to make it to the top-flight.

Having played a part in 43% of the Clarets’ goals on their way to the Championship title, he looks worthy of serious consideration for our three-man frontlines.

  • Gray has wasted no time in announcing himself to Fantasy managers over the summer period by scoring eight times, including a weekend hat-trick at Rangers. The Premier League’s form forward over pre-season, he’s been both consistent and explosive and found the net in all five of his appearances. Despite a kind 6.5 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he’s shaping up to be a decent differential and is owned by just 10% so far.
  • Last season, Gray averaged a shot every 31.3 minutes, which was slightly better than Southampton’s Shane Long (34.9), who is currently the highest owned forward (15.2%) priced 6.5 and under in FPL. Elsewhere in this bracket, Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson was less impressive in this regard, averaging a shot every 48.2 minutes last term, with West Ham’s Andy Carroll (27.6), Southampton’s Charlie Austin (29.1) and Middlesbrough’s Alvaro Negredo (29.4) the quickest.
  • Gray also impresses in terms of goal conversion. He netted an eye-catching 21.1%of his opportunities in the previous season – superior to the similarly priced Carroll (16.1%), Long (15.6%) and Austin (12.5%), although Wilson did lead the way, with an impressive goal conversion rate of 29.4% last term, albeit from just 13 appearances. His prospects would be boosted if he’s afforded spot-kicks ahead of team-mate Sam Vokes – Gray took five last term, scoring four, though Vokes scored three when his strike partner was on the pitch. Certainly, this would justify the extra outlay comapred to Vokes’ cost of 6.0.
  • Compared to forwards at the other promoted clubs, Gray’s appeal is heightened by a security of starts – Dyche tends to favour consistency of selection and is unlikely to chop and change unnecessarily. The same can’t be said for either Middlesbrough or Hull right now. Aitor Karanka operates with a 4-2-3-1 formation, so while Negredo looks to be the first-choice striker, Jordan Rhodes seems likely to steal minutes off the Spaniard given the ‘Boro manager’s penchant for rotation. With last term’s top scorer Abel Hernandez linked with a move away, few FPL bosses will be prepared to invest in Hull’s attack right now until some sense of stability is restored.
  • Gray’s prospects are boosted by the fact that Burnley are the only team facing four home matches in the first six Gameweeks (SWA, LIV, che, HUL, lei, WAT), due to their Gameweek 2 fixture against Liverpool being reversed as the Reds put the finishing touches to their new Main Stand. The former Brentford forward looks to have the ideal platform to hit the ground running, then, with the fixtures against Swansea, Hull and Watford in particular looking very favourable.

Guys, who would you pick for 6.5m regardless of position?

    A) Wilson/Gray
    B) Townsend
    C) Delf
    D) Redmond

I think it's because Koeman has been playing him as a false 9 pre season and he's bagged a few goals. Unlikely he'll play that way when the season starts, but looks like Koeman is a fan..

Much of a muchness. They'll probably both start.
All depends on Lukaku though. If he does, then Deulofeu stands a chance of playing up front in a role similar to that which Long took on for Southampton last season.

        Last big pay day?
Not saying he won't play but even FPL has Rhodes as the more costly striker indicating they think he's the favourite to start.

Sorry scratch that I saw Nugents price not Negredo's

I stand corrected, looks like FPL think Negredo is favourite to start over Rhodes - interesting.

Rhodes didn't start every week last season. Karanka had a habit on dropping him regularly.
On that basis I'd leave them both alone. Fischer is very interesting though; Christian Eriksen Mk II

Honestly I'm just reading it, I don't know how that would pan out. I'd imagine City have an opt out clause in that case?

With Lukaku not buyable at the moment (and Benteke still in Liverpool), feels like we have three choices to partner with Kun and a 6.5 striker

    1. Go with Ibra and have a weaker MF
    2. Reach for Vardy or Kane who appear over-priced
    3. Go double 6.5 strikers because there seems to be at least half a dozen of these guys that might get the job done

I'm shocked at myself, but am strongly leaning with option 3. That extra $5m between Ibra and the Long/Wilson/Gray/Carroll/Austin/Negredo bucket goes a long way (no pun intended)

    is that crazy?

I disagree that Kane is overpriced. He has two seasons of elite fantasy performances and is only getting better.

      4) Aguero + Lukaku + £6.5

      1. itsmilks

        This is my strategy.

I'm not sold on Ibrahimovic currently.
I am however confident that Lukaku will start and score goals be he at Everton or Chelsea.
My 6.5 is Gray because of form. He has the potential to start as Callum Wilson dis last year.

Kane isn't overpriced, but he needs games under his belt before I get involved. Started badly last season and burned me.

There's value ahoy this year. Just need to pick the right one!

    RMT please guys:

    Valdes - (Jakupovic)
    Shaw - Stones - Friend - (Mee - Souare)
    Mahrez - Barkley - Sigurdsson - Shaqiri - (Zaha)
    Aguero - Ibra - Negredo

Leaving yourself in a risky position if Valdes doesn't work out. Rest of the team is pretty strong

Yea I was feeling GK and MID were a bit weak but that's the price you pay for Aguero and Ibra I suppose.

I think I'll probably tinker with the midfield until the first day of the season.

As for Valdes and Jakupovic I guess I'll have to rethink it!

      Thanks!

    Hazard Firmino Tadic Delf (Capoue)
    Kun Kane Gray

I have Coleman to outscore Baines comfortably this season.
Can't justify a WBA defender at the moment, time will tell on this one though.
Think Liverpool are too rotation heavy to justify a big priced player.
Kane might not fire from GW1, might be worth an alternate option there.

Aside from that it looks like most other teams without Ibrahimovic in.

All the 5.5 defenders are punts and the 6+ ones are overpriced for now 😉

My defence won't be as cheap in a few weeks, but I wanna have a look at Chelsea / Spurs / United / Arsenal first.

I start cheap in defence every season and it has worked well on multiple occasions. People will say it is unbalanced and full of rubbish but they are wrong.
