Up until a disastrous 2015/16 campaign, it’s fair to say that Leighton Baines was one of the most reliable Fantasy Premier League (FPL) defenders around.

Rarely injured, the Everton left-back was synonymous with consistency and, thanks to a fair share of dead-ball duties, provided us with a steady source of points at both ends of the pitch season after season.

In Roberto Martinez’ final year at Goodison, Baines dropped into Fantasy obscurity. With an ankle injury limiting his minutes, the Toffees defender failed to feature until Gameweek 15 and never started more than five successive league matches.

Named in the Everton first XI on just 16 occasions, the left-back produced just two goals, a pair of assists and four clean sheets to limp home with just 67 points on the board.

Martinez’ decision to hand Romelu Lukaku spot-kick duties also dented Baines’ appeal, whilst at the back, the Merseysiders’ porous defence offered little in the way of resilience and conceded 55 times – a record only better than the bottom five.

The Prospects

With Martinez now departed, there’s hope that new manager Ronald Koeman can transform the Toffees’ fortunes at both ends of the pitch.

Encouragingly for those eyeing up the Everton backline, the Dutchman guided Southampton to a sixth-place finish last time out thanks to a resilience that saw their defence breached just 41 times – a tally bettered by only four other sides.

This should help the Toffees at home in particular – they managed just three clean sheets at Goodison and conceded 30 times in front of their own supporters, the third-worst home record in the league.

In terms of attacking potential, Ramiro Funes Mori (5.0) looks once to watch after netting four times last term, though Koeman’s more direct approach could be set to benefit Baines and fellow full-back Seamus Coleman.

Post-match reports covering Everton’s recent win over Barnsley were quick to cite more possession down the channels and Koeman summed up his intentions:

“A full-back has two options – play the ball back to the goalkeeper or play it down the channels [to the forwards]. I don’t like the first option.”

If Baines can steer clear of the treatment table, then, there’s hope that he could re-emerge as a viable option for our five-man defences.

Now down to a more affordable 5.5 this season, a run of six consecutive hauls of 130+ points prior to last year, which served up 22 goals and 43 assists, illustrates the potential value at hand.

Koeman’s decision on dead-ball duties will also play a part in our thinking. The likes of Gerard Deulofeu and Kevin Mirallas have already scored from free-kicks in the close-season, though it remains to be seen if either can nail down a regular role under the Dutchman.

Should Baines be given a portion of corners and free-kicks and also reclaim spot-kick duties, that price tag could prove excellent value for money. There’s even a chance he could be utilised as a wing-back if Koeman opts for the 3-5-2 formation we saw on occasion in the previous campaign.

Looking at the fixtures, Koeman will be optimistic of getting off to a strong start. The Toffees face just two of last year’s top eight in the opening nine Gameweeks and are rated third in terms of strength of schedule over that period, suggesting it won’t be long before Baines makes his way back onto our radars.

      So the question is:

      A) Fischer, Eriksen, or
      B) Siggy, Townsend/Bolasie ???

Personally I'd go B with Townsend if you don't need the 0.5

Right, now that it's a little less busy, how do people feel about these questions?

    1) Is Siggy a GW1 starter?

    2) Who's likely to score more GW1? A) Bolasie (WBA); B) Bojan (mid)

    3) Do you think Musa's arrival at Everton will impact Schupp's playing time?

    4) Who will score more points over the first 5 or 6 GWs?
    C) Gaston R; D) Fischer; E) Bolasie; F) Bojan

Are Fry and Smith likely starters?

Barkley's a fun pick, nice one. Not for me personally, though.

I still don't understand Firmino's popularity, given that we have the luxury to pick with fixtures in mind, and no luxury of seeing players/teams' true form. But I can see why people want him in their team for the price.

Could someone RMT for GW1 please?

Thoughts on the team i seem to have settled on.

    Cech
    Otomendi Bertrand Alderweireld
    Tadic Bolasie Sanchez Eriksen
    Gray Kane Giroud

    4.0 Friend Anya Paredes

Like the fact that theres thinking about who to field. last year had alot of points on the bench so going for a different tactic.
-Like tadic this season even tho many seem his overhyped. liking bolasie also at that price.
-Main question i have is.. Kane or Lukaku + 2mill?
is Kane really worth that much more than Lukaku?

    This just seems so predictable....

    DeGea/ Jak
    Terry 5.0 Pieters Friend McCauley
    Hazard Mahrez Redmond Fischer Hoj
    Kun Ibra Gray

Many options that can be changed obviously, but this seems pretty safe for now.

    Guys please help RMT

    Foster/Jaku
Williams/Stones(pending on the move), Shaw, Friend, Lenihan, Paredes
Hazard, Mahrez(or Mkhitaryan), Eriksen, Tadic, Leko
    Lukaku, Gray, Aguero.

    Main questions are:
    1) Hazard, Mahrez or Mkhitaryan? Struggle to pick 2 out of the 3. Planning to throw Ozil into the mix after GW1. Me being a Chelsea fan see me skewed towards Hazard, but I am really not sure whether I should pick Mahrez or Mkhitaryan. Would really appreciate thoughts from some manunited fans here.

    2) Eriksen + Lukaku or Deulofeu + Harry Kane? I actually like Deulofeu's potential and he has crazy assist numbers per minutes but Eriksen seems to be more consistent to me. Is harry kane really that much better than Lukaku? Tbh they both didnt impress me at the EUro. Lukaku's touch still deserts him and Kane didnt even score at all.

    1. Helia
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 7 months ago

i wouldnt judge kane by the euro.. him in spurs and in the premierleague is a total different thing i think. I think Lukaku has the potential to match or surpass kane. Kanes just the safer pick. just dont know if his worth a whole 2 mill more though.
if i were to pick between eriksen and Lukaku or Kane and delefeou id go the first one. Delefeou is a decent pick but eriksen is class.

and your other question.. me personally, id go for hazard and mahrez.

Alde, van Aan, Friend, Pieters, Francis
    KDB, Mahrez, Erikson, Zaha, Leko
    Kun, Gray, Wilson

    0.5 itb

I went with high priced mix with low hoping the others have a chance to increase price early with easy matches.

Is it too much hope, thought?
