Up until a disastrous 2015/16 campaign, it’s fair to say that Leighton Baines was one of the most reliable Fantasy Premier League (FPL) defenders around.

Rarely injured, the Everton left-back was synonymous with consistency and, thanks to a fair share of dead-ball duties, provided us with a steady source of points at both ends of the pitch season after season.

In Roberto Martinez’ final year at Goodison, Baines dropped into Fantasy obscurity. With an ankle injury limiting his minutes, the Toffees defender failed to feature until Gameweek 15 and never started more than five successive league matches.

Named in the Everton first XI on just 16 occasions, the left-back produced just two goals, a pair of assists and four clean sheets to limp home with just 67 points on the board.

Martinez’ decision to hand Romelu Lukaku spot-kick duties also dented Baines’ appeal, whilst at the back, the Merseysiders’ porous defence offered little in the way of resilience and conceded 55 times – a record only better than the bottom five.

The Prospects

With Martinez now departed, there’s hope that new manager Ronald Koeman can transform the Toffees’ fortunes at both ends of the pitch.

Encouragingly for those eyeing up the Everton backline, the Dutchman guided Southampton to a sixth-place finish last time out thanks to a resilience that saw their defence breached just 41 times – a tally bettered by only four other sides.

This should help the Toffees at home in particular – they managed just three clean sheets at Goodison and conceded 30 times in front of their own supporters, the third-worst home record in the league.

In terms of attacking potential, Ramiro Funes Mori (5.0) looks once to watch after netting four times last term, though Koeman’s more direct approach could be set to benefit Baines and fellow full-back Seamus Coleman.

Post-match reports covering Everton’s recent win over Barnsley were quick to cite more possession down the channels and Koeman summed up his intentions:

“A full-back has two options – play the ball back to the goalkeeper or play it down the channels [to the forwards]. I don’t like the first option.”

If Baines can steer clear of the treatment table, then, there’s hope that he could re-emerge as a viable option for our five-man defences.

Now down to a more affordable 5.5 this season, a run of six consecutive hauls of 130+ points prior to last year, which served up 22 goals and 43 assists, illustrates the potential value at hand.

Koeman’s decision on dead-ball duties will also play a part in our thinking. The likes of Gerard Deulofeu and Kevin Mirallas have already scored from free-kicks in the close-season, though it remains to be seen if either can nail down a regular role under the Dutchman.

Should Baines be given a portion of corners and free-kicks and also reclaim spot-kick duties, that price tag could prove excellent value for money. There’s even a chance he could be utilised as a wing-back if Koeman opts for the 3-5-2 formation we saw on occasion in the previous campaign.

Looking at the fixtures, Koeman will be optimistic of getting off to a strong start. The Toffees face just two of last year’s top eight in the opening nine Gameweeks and are rated third in terms of strength of schedule over that period, suggesting it won’t be long before Baines makes his way back onto our radars.

I know its an 'obvious' statement to make and I am sure several said it last year and were absolutely wrong, but i think the Leicester bubble has well and truly burst! Forget that its Barca, we know they are world class, but the way they are playing, is really not good!

I accept that, but this year I see no value in there team at all. If Vardy/Mahrez perform, they are expected too at there price points. I won't be touching any of them. If they do it again, all power to them. But i don't think it happens.

Context is everything . Leicester are playing Barca. I have already seen that the media seem only too ready to knock them down. What they did last season was fairy tale stuff as they completely exceeded expectations. A general sense of realism is required. They simply do not have the resources to compete at the highest level.

This topic has been exhausted on here many times the strongest teams in Spain are a lot stronger than those in England but as a whole the PL is more competitive and as a brand and in terms of excitement takes La Liga to the cleaners

It's all very subjective though tbh Nidge, it may be more competitive. Yet that's probably down to the poor level of football that been played in England for a while, hopefully Pep, Conte & the ilk change that soon. But what you see as exciting differs from person to person.

Though there's no disputing that La Liga teams consistently wipe the floor with PL teams in both the CL & EL.

        1. KingNidge
          • 10 Years

It's very much each to their own although the viewing figures of each league from around the globe would tell a story i guess..

Personally outside the classicos and the top 3 or 4 sides i wouldn't arrange a night around watching anything else in that league.. sat through many in the past and it makes for pretty dire viewing.. even watching Barca smash teams for 6 and 7 week in week out with 80% possesion bores me to tears tbh.. i like an end to end game high tempo tackles flying in all that jazz

Certainly not disputing the quality of the top 2 or 3 sides

          1. Zasa
            • 11 Years
            9 years, 7 months ago

Again, all subjective though. I prefer watching teams tactically break down others, with interesting formations & set-ups, & the technical ability of the Spanish players over the English. There are many sides that play exciting football, take Celta Vigo for example most recently who are a great watch in attack.

Others prefer watching teams running like headless chickens down the wings in a 442 with boring old-fashioned managers to each their own 🙂

Their are people who think that one of, if not the most dominant team ever, Spain, played anti-football when they won the two Euros & the WC. Their are others who admire watching that sort of play & the way they'd slowly wear down gaps in the opponents team defense & exploit the numerical advantage in midfield. Different strokes, for different folks.

The top 3 has plenty of cash to spare, the TV deal is ridiculous compared to the premier league; anyone but the top 2 don't get all that much, whereas in England it's a lot fairer.

Top teams yes, but rest of the league no, and this is backed up by how often Real/Barca hand out whoopings to the 'other' clubs in La Liga. In the Bundesliga, whoopings by Bayern are far less common.

PL & Bundesliga are more competitive leagues (as a whole), less predictable and have better players at the lesser clubs, which is understandable as they spend more money.

La Liga undoubtedly has the best top teams though.
