This afternoon we launch the first captain poll of the season, listing the very best armband prospects for Gameweek 1.

You can find the pool in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

With a home tie against Sunderland it would be no surprise to see Sergio Aguero dominate Fantasy managers’ thinking.

Those handing the armband to the striker, who with 39% ownership is the Fantasy Premier League’s most popular player, will be buoyed by Sunderland’s disastrous away record at Manchester City in recent years. The Black Cats have conceded 15 goals in their last four Premier League away fixtures to City, including last season’s 4-1 hammering.

However, under new boss David Moyes the Sunderland backline may present Aguero with a sterner test. In his last four seasons at Everton Moyes was only beaten once away to City in the league.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic could offer a viable captaincy alternative away to Bournemouth, particularly after scoring against Leicester City on his competitive debut for Manchester United in Sunday’s Community Shield. Those expecting the big Swede, who is owned by 35.7% of FPL managers, to use his height to full effect again may be disappointed: last season the Cherries conceded the fewest headed goal attempts in home matches.

Among the promoted side’s strikers Burnley’s Andre Gray (11.2% FPL ownership) could be the pick of the bunch. He certainly has form on his side, after netting nine goals in six pre-season outings. In addition, he faces a Swansea side that has had to cope with late returns of many of their Euro 16 stars, including skipper Ashley Williams who is far from certain to be on the Swans’ teamsheet.

Despite missing pre-season, Gylfi Sigurdsson could factor into Fantasy managers’ thinking for Swansea. With Andre Ayew’s departure seemingly imminent, the Icelandic international, who has a 9.3% ownership, looks to be the outright pick of the Swans assets this season.

For Southampton’s home game against Watford Dusan Tadic has done enough in pre-season to impress. Under new manager Claude Puel he has been fielded in friendlies in an advanced central attacking role at the tip of a midfield diamond. This has gone largely unnoticed by FPL managers, with just 4.6% owning the Serb. New recruit from Norwich, Nathan Redmond, is another possibility for those looking to take a captaincy punt on a Saints player, but with pitch time not guaranteed he just failed to make our shortlist.

With just 26 minutes of pre-season action for West Ham, Dimitri Payet is not certain to start away to Chelsea, making him a risky pick for the armband. Nevertheless, once he gets into his stride we are expecting him to be a strong candidate to challenge Aguero for the captaincy in the Gameweeks to come. With 31% ownership he is also one of the most popular players in FPL.

Our final mention goes to Liverpool pair Sadio Mane and Robert Firmino, who are owned by 10.9% and 8.4% of FPL managers respectively. The midfield duo have four goals between them in pre-season and face an Arsenal defence decimated by injury and international tournament fatigue.

We will revisit the poll standings at the end of the week in the Gameweek 1 Captain Sensible article.

Aguero for me so far, as I'm dull as ditchwater. 😉

But very tempted by Firmino away to an Arsenal under 21 defence.

This. The only downside with Mane is that he has explosive games and then does nothing. Moreover, i guess Mane would play wide and Firmino more central. Maybe even false 9?

I expect Firmino to play false 9 but still prefer Mané. Just a bigger goal threat and a natural goal scorer imo, takes so many shots inside the box. Klopp will add consistency to his game I'm sure.

You'd imagine that on the break Mané would be the most dangerous of the Liverpool forward players, Arsenal's defense right now is of major concern to them, so it'll be interesting to see how it pans out.

Yes. But as a dullard Firmino is more reliable for me as a captaincy. The day I captain Mane will be truly an epic day indeed.

Valencia has been god awful over the last few seasons. Suspicious defensively and crosses to non existent crouch height players. Shaw has always looked very good when fit.

However, Valencia has looked great pre-season . he finally has someone who can reach his crosses and has looked the more threatening. I think people are now starting to warm to the idea of Valencia.

      1. Manamongst
        • 15 Years

He has a golden right foot, hit has a tendency to hit juicy crosses, not normally at Crouch height...but at a cruising altitude of about 1/2 meter in height...

He's still very suspect defensively and was beaten on numerous occasions by Leicester only to be saved by Bailly.

He'll start the season but I'm still not confident he's nailed on. Can't see Mou being happy after numerous defensive lapses, especially if they lead to a few goals.

Be wary is my advice, but he has been good going forward.

    d) Mahrez + 4.5 4th mid + Ibrah

    Foster.
    Valencia. Friend. Kone.
    Hazard. Firmino. Redmond. Ramirez.
    Kun. Kane. Vardy.

Subs: Jaku. Capoue. Targett. Amat. 0.0mil ITB.

Certainly good enough for a early WC.

Pick one as my 3rd mid:

    A) Barkley
    B) Tadic
    C) Arnautovic
    D) Sigurdsson

Why is Lamela so highly rated here? I mean I get he has a low price but his price is shared with plenty great mid-table options who are the main man as well as just 0.5 away from Oscar.

Last season he had three players in his team beating his points output, what are the odds he will get the points when/if Spurs score (and Spurs do happen to be slow starters usually)

As a Spurs fan, Lamela looks like he could have a breakout year.

Will he score more FPL points than Eriksen and Alli though? Highly doubtful...

The question for me is saving 1.5 points worth it?

Anyone want to playing anti.football with me? 🙂 It's totally opposite to FPL
    Rule:

    1) The best score in the gameweek is the lowest score. Aim for the zero!
    2) Even if player does not play a single minute in the game (for whatever reason) he will record a default amount of points in that gameweek. Default amount of points for 0 minutes played in a gameweek is 5
    3) If you your captain haven’t played a single minute he won’t be replaced and he’ll record twice the default amount of points.
4)Try to spend most of your budget before each deadline. Every credit unspent in the budget will be added to your gameweek score!

I've hardly looked at FPL yet, really behind the ball this year. So to help get me started can anyone give me:

    1. What the current template team is looking like,
    2. What the popular unknown early bandwagons are, I'm thinking the Michu's / Mahrez etc of this year.

    Thanks in advance

I know we love Tadic around her but did anyone watch him play in pre season games? How did he look?

new to the site so one questiuon - why are so many worried about pwnership numbers? is it simply that if he's on fire then without him you;re playing catch up? or does it affect their value going up as well??
