This afternoon we launch the first captain poll of the season, listing the very best armband prospects for Gameweek 1.

You can find the pool in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

With a home tie against Sunderland it would be no surprise to see Sergio Aguero dominate Fantasy managers’ thinking.

Those handing the armband to the striker, who with 39% ownership is the Fantasy Premier League’s most popular player, will be buoyed by Sunderland’s disastrous away record at Manchester City in recent years. The Black Cats have conceded 15 goals in their last four Premier League away fixtures to City, including last season’s 4-1 hammering.

However, under new boss David Moyes the Sunderland backline may present Aguero with a sterner test. In his last four seasons at Everton Moyes was only beaten once away to City in the league.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic could offer a viable captaincy alternative away to Bournemouth, particularly after scoring against Leicester City on his competitive debut for Manchester United in Sunday’s Community Shield. Those expecting the big Swede, who is owned by 35.7% of FPL managers, to use his height to full effect again may be disappointed: last season the Cherries conceded the fewest headed goal attempts in home matches.

Among the promoted side’s strikers Burnley’s Andre Gray (11.2% FPL ownership) could be the pick of the bunch. He certainly has form on his side, after netting nine goals in six pre-season outings. In addition, he faces a Swansea side that has had to cope with late returns of many of their Euro 16 stars, including skipper Ashley Williams who is far from certain to be on the Swans’ teamsheet.

Despite missing pre-season, Gylfi Sigurdsson could factor into Fantasy managers’ thinking for Swansea. With Andre Ayew’s departure seemingly imminent, the Icelandic international, who has a 9.3% ownership, looks to be the outright pick of the Swans assets this season.

For Southampton’s home game against Watford Dusan Tadic has done enough in pre-season to impress. Under new manager Claude Puel he has been fielded in friendlies in an advanced central attacking role at the tip of a midfield diamond. This has gone largely unnoticed by FPL managers, with just 4.6% owning the Serb. New recruit from Norwich, Nathan Redmond, is another possibility for those looking to take a captaincy punt on a Saints player, but with pitch time not guaranteed he just failed to make our shortlist.

With just 26 minutes of pre-season action for West Ham, Dimitri Payet is not certain to start away to Chelsea, making him a risky pick for the armband. Nevertheless, once he gets into his stride we are expecting him to be a strong candidate to challenge Aguero for the captaincy in the Gameweeks to come. With 31% ownership he is also one of the most popular players in FPL.

Our final mention goes to Liverpool pair Sadio Mane and Robert Firmino, who are owned by 10.9% and 8.4% of FPL managers respectively. The midfield duo have four goals between them in pre-season and face an Arsenal defence decimated by injury and international tournament fatigue.

We will revisit the poll standings at the end of the week in the Gameweek 1 Captain Sensible article.

Yes. He can and has played further forward in the past but it looks like he is going to be the holding mid for Saints.

I believe he's been playing at the base of Saints' midfield diamond in preseason.

I've set up a whatsapp group for the FFS regulars for some general FPL advice and match-day chat. Some very familiar faces around there and we've got a vacancy available. If you are willing to join and participate in the group discussions, you could email me your cell number along with your FFS ID at bigmanbakar@gmail.com

Not nailed but highly rated by Bilic. Also depends on how Bilic lines up. 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1. The later increases his chances

Our likely front 4 will be

      -----Carroll-----
      Valencia---Kouyate---Feghouli

This will probs be for the first game anyway. After that, yes i can see him starting a lot. He has played in all pre-season games, in the same position too - so looks nailed on to me!

One of my first picks this season mainly because he got me 2 goals in UCL last season at a mere 4.5M!

But this more or less is my punt in a rather settled team.

    B) Lamela + Vardy

Currently on B but not having Sanchez has me worried..

    1. stat
      9 years, 11 months ago

Definitely B. Lamela + Vardy should easily outscore Sanchez + Wickham over the course of the season. Having said that, Sanchez is the most explosive, but lets not forget Vardy was last season's top scorer.

      1. Zikry

True; Lamela is the interesting one for me as I really am not sure what to expect.

        1. stat
          9 years, 11 months ago

He's looked very solid in pre-season and I think he's going to get a lot of goals and assists this season. Downside is he's a yellow card magnet, and usually the first attacking player to be subbed off. But at 7m I think he's at a great price.

Tough one...i'd eliminate 2 just because you already have Valencia, Morgan and VVD.

Would probably pick #2 BUT I think I'd actually punt on GRamirez as the 5.5 given his fixtures to start off with and his importance to any and all of Boro's attacks.

Surprised that I haven't seen anyone mention Butland on here.

Shawcross is back, Stoke are back to playing a back 4 after their 3-5-2 experiment during preseason.

Middlesborough are far from prolific and his next 2 games will feature plenty of save opportunities.

    "Liverpool thrive on tough fixtures".

Will you guys be selling Firmino once his fixtures clear up? Or are you expecting Liverpool to thrive in both tough and easy fixtures?

Fantastic is exaggeration, and what I'm worried about is that he plays for Palace, and might not even start from the beginning. If this pick fails, you'll be left with Jaku, who also might not even start, and if he starts you might wish he didn't. 😉

THINK? I'm happy with my team now....have gone for a something a little different.

Would appreciate any thoughts and feedback

    Foster (Pickford)

Shaw, Stones, Evans, Kone, B. Smith (bench fodder 1)

    Hazard, Sanchez, Lamela, Tadic, Gray

Aguero, Vardy, Diomande (bench fodder 2)

My thoughts are going 352 or 442 early season.

Redmond had 4 goals and 1 assists in his first 9 games for Norwich last season (6 goals 2 assist in total 22 starts)

Is he nailed on and if so playing for a better side could he replicate such a start ?

Think he's nailed on for the first few games at least.

Looks nailed as the forward alongside Redmond. Looks like the prime candidate for that 60-65 min switch with Austin coming on if needed though.

Is it possible to have a Welsh flag display next to my team on the FPL site?

Ibra as he's got three easier teams compared to two in first 3 gameweeks

    Agüero - Kane - Gray

    Firmino -- Tadic -- Lamela -- Redmond -- (Capoue)
    Aguero -- Zlatan -- Gray
