This afternoon we launch the first captain poll of the season, listing the very best armband prospects for Gameweek 1.

You can find the pool in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

With a home tie against Sunderland it would be no surprise to see Sergio Aguero dominate Fantasy managers’ thinking.

Those handing the armband to the striker, who with 39% ownership is the Fantasy Premier League’s most popular player, will be buoyed by Sunderland’s disastrous away record at Manchester City in recent years. The Black Cats have conceded 15 goals in their last four Premier League away fixtures to City, including last season’s 4-1 hammering.

However, under new boss David Moyes the Sunderland backline may present Aguero with a sterner test. In his last four seasons at Everton Moyes was only beaten once away to City in the league.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic could offer a viable captaincy alternative away to Bournemouth, particularly after scoring against Leicester City on his competitive debut for Manchester United in Sunday’s Community Shield. Those expecting the big Swede, who is owned by 35.7% of FPL managers, to use his height to full effect again may be disappointed: last season the Cherries conceded the fewest headed goal attempts in home matches.

Among the promoted side’s strikers Burnley’s Andre Gray (11.2% FPL ownership) could be the pick of the bunch. He certainly has form on his side, after netting nine goals in six pre-season outings. In addition, he faces a Swansea side that has had to cope with late returns of many of their Euro 16 stars, including skipper Ashley Williams who is far from certain to be on the Swans’ teamsheet.

Despite missing pre-season, Gylfi Sigurdsson could factor into Fantasy managers’ thinking for Swansea. With Andre Ayew’s departure seemingly imminent, the Icelandic international, who has a 9.3% ownership, looks to be the outright pick of the Swans assets this season.

For Southampton’s home game against Watford Dusan Tadic has done enough in pre-season to impress. Under new manager Claude Puel he has been fielded in friendlies in an advanced central attacking role at the tip of a midfield diamond. This has gone largely unnoticed by FPL managers, with just 4.6% owning the Serb. New recruit from Norwich, Nathan Redmond, is another possibility for those looking to take a captaincy punt on a Saints player, but with pitch time not guaranteed he just failed to make our shortlist.

With just 26 minutes of pre-season action for West Ham, Dimitri Payet is not certain to start away to Chelsea, making him a risky pick for the armband. Nevertheless, once he gets into his stride we are expecting him to be a strong candidate to challenge Aguero for the captaincy in the Gameweeks to come. With 31% ownership he is also one of the most popular players in FPL.

Our final mention goes to Liverpool pair Sadio Mane and Robert Firmino, who are owned by 10.9% and 8.4% of FPL managers respectively. The midfield duo have four goals between them in pre-season and face an Arsenal defence decimated by injury and international tournament fatigue.

We will revisit the poll standings at the end of the week in the Gameweek 1 Captain Sensible article.

Bournemouth have some tough fixtures in the opening weeks and there is a bit of a question mark on how he will perform after such a long injury layoff. Safer picks to start the season.

Hello Jonty! The simplest summary is: achievements that happened two years ago have 50% of the weight/importance as current achievements. e.g. 2015/16 has 100% weight, 2014/15 has roughy 70% weight, 2013/14 has 50% weight, whilst 2011/12 has 25% weight e.t.c

Not sure off the top of my head, but I can definitely say that it will be points that matter and not places (e.g. if you beat him by 1000 places but you finished 50,000th then that's not as good as beating him by 1000 places and you finishing... ...say 1st!!! 😉

My guess is around 20 points better over the season, might do it- but that really is just a guess!

What do you think with going with 2 x 6.5 forwards so you can get a couple of heavy hitters in Midfield or would you weaken your Midfield by having 2 heavy hitters up top?

I was literally just toying with this idea. I'm not 100% sold on Hazard as a captaincy option for gw1 so I feel Aguero is essential for captaincy gw1 (home to Sunderland is pretty hard to overlook- sorry as you are a Sunderland fan!!). But that at least gives flexibility to change him to Kane if Aguero underachieves or gets injured (or if Kane looks impressive enough that I can't ignore him as (c) for gw2.)

For me, the midfield is a minefield, trying to find good 6-7 midfielders that have good expected returns is hard so yes, I am definitely considering freeing up some cash by going Aguero, (Carroll and Grey).

I would say going without Leicester is the safest. What's interesting is the betting markets are suggesting Leicester are the 7th best team in the Prem this year and the expected goals from the Hull opener is surprisingly low (although the market isn't that well formed at the moment). The betting markets also don't think Tottenham can reproduce their excellent points total last season, although some of that must be due to the predicted resurgence of teams like Man Utd and Chelsea.

Saying this, I am playing with Mahrez in my team as he offers good captaincy options for gws 3 and 5.

I had a question about the RMT tool. How does it does deal with players who have fallen from 'grace'? - The Sleepers like Hazard . Personally, I feel his predicted scores are quite low for the first 6 but what exactly is the reason behind it?

      1. RMT's Professor
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

So, firstly the RMT tool is due to be updated this evening/tomorrow morning now all the pre-season games are out the way.

With someone like Hazard, the model *currently* doesn't take into account things like his improved performances in the Euros and his pre-season form, however his price tag does give the model some indication of the quality he has and will push up his expected goals and assists away from his average last year.

Finally, we have the ability to manually tweak the goalscoring rates (and assist rates e.t.c) of players we think are sleepers. When doing this we can see the rates of all the other players in that team so we know that Hazard goalscoring rate should be lower than Costa's but probably the highest out of all the mids.

The ability to manually tweak these rates is particularly useful is some piece of (harder to program) information becomes available, like, say... Conte comes out and confirms that Costa is on pens. Knowing the right amount to tweak Hazard's rate based on such information requires good football understanding, which thankfully Mark and co have in abundance!

Yes, I looked at this the other day as TM pointed me in it's direction. Your issue is both the missing year but I think more strongly is the two years where you finished outside the 2million mark.

You definitely have one of the highest potentials to shoot up the HoF ratings though if you can reproduce your recent form, as those bad years will have less and less weight put on them.

I've compared my bad years with others. Who are at 500 odd and I'm at 8300! Can you reveal what value assigned to a missed season? Shouldn't it be average of years around?

Your issue is that it is not ranks that matter, it is points and because you got such a woeful number of points in 2010/11 that affects your missing year more than the good years do.

I'm happy to admit this is a flaw in the model but your problem is a very, very unusual one. It is highly unusual for someone with a.) such a good recent history in FPL to b.) have had such an awful season, which wasn't their first but c.) also then to miss a year and then come back again.

The team model is fitted almost perfectly to betting odds.

The consequence of this is that if you believe that the betting odds are highly informative (which I do) then:

if you think RMT is over-rating a player from, say Tottenham), then there will be a player or player(s) that are undervalued by RMT from Tottenham. Currently one example of a player that I hope is undervalued is Lamela, as I'm currently toying with him in the squad.

Another example is with playing probabilities. Suppose you know that either Clichy or Kolarov will play at left-back, then if you think Kolarov is over-rated on RMT one week, then that suggests you should think Clichy is under-rated.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the numbers change with the next update tonight/tomorrow morning with all the latest team news.

I think all will be very good FPL players this year- Lamela is more of a risk but might be a risk worth taking due to his cheaper price tag.

I used RMT more or less exclusively for my team last season and had my worst season ever (Kept Hazard for too long). How best to use RMT in your decision making. Also would like to know how decide most likely starters. For instance Holebas far more likely to play than Zuniga for Watford based on pre season yet RMT seems to indicate Zuniga the most likely starter.

Chelsea and Hazard was such a strange one last year- the betting markets clearly kept over-estimating them despite their poor start and underlying stats (dreadful xG from the first 6 games or so).

Personally I would mix the feeling of people on these forums with the opinions of RMT. A lot of the time people on here over-react to the most recent events but at the same time I think when the over-whelming majority of people have gone cold on a player it might be time to jump ship. This is something I learnt the hard way in the Ramsey/Yaya season, where I refused to believe their runs would continue.

The most valuable things I believe RMT gives an FPL players is:
a.) 'a feel' for the value of a transfer (in numerical terms)
b.) risks that might just be *too* punty
c.) quickly see how well your players rotate
d.) quickly see who to captain/vc and bench.
e.) an appreciation of how important fixture difficulty is (especially for defenders) and how important home advantage is
f.) a way to test many 'beliefs' about how to play the game (e.g. the vast majority of the time 3-4-3 is the suggested formation on RMT and you can see why this is numerically)

With regards Holebas and Zuniga, look out for the update tomorrow morning to see whether there is any change in this situation. The numbers should also reflect the Team News page on this site so if it looks like, as you say, Holebas is most likely to start and he is in the Team News predicted line-up, he should also be rated higher by RMT than Zuniga. (And if it's not, please do shout it on the forums, so it can be changed!)

I use the RMT tool and have seen the in depth explanation video with the Professor and Mark explaining how the figures are calculated (it makes a lot of sense, not all of it intuitive).

However, my question is why don't the season long predictions for higher value players come anywhere close to the observed values? (e.g. top players by the RMT model are predicted to get about 190-200 points over the season, yet there are a couple of players like Aguero who not only may get to this level but would be expected to get about 230-240 points if fit) The values for lower expectation players seem to fit but the mid-price players (e.g. 7.5-9.0m) seem a little out and the premiums (9.5m+) seem further out.

      Thanks for any insight.

Why is that the RMT tool suggests that Kante at Chelsea offers exceptional value, yet the overwhelming opinion on this site is that he should not be considered?

          Great question WW!

The answer is that although Kante offers exceptional value to the pound and this can be a useful metric for looking at cheaper players, it is a slightly misleading metric. The reason for this is that the cheapest players don't play every week so actually you hopefully won't see most of Kante's 2's, 3's or 1's each week. Because of this, he *becomes* much worse value in the context of a team. In fact, you can try him in a built RMT team and you will see, if you have a half-decent team, RMT suggests you play him on the bench most weeks. Therefore, you won't be able to achieve the 'value' that a simplistic points/£ calculation provides.

          Does that make sense?

Very good question Triggy! The reason for this is that in general the players who top the FPL points ranking each year have more often than not, had an above average year. This can be in for numerous reason but probably the biggest one is that it's likely that the top points scorer will not have had any serious injuries, which the model has to take into small but significant percentage chance.

When I created RMT I decided it was best to allow players to have a short term playing probability and a long-term playing probability, which takes into account the chance of injuries/loss of form/competition for places. Those players who end up topping the charts have essentially usually managed to play more minutes than you would expect on average (say if you were to simulate the season 1000s of times) and may also have experienced above expected attacking returns.

So some of Aguero, Kane, Ibra, Lukaku, Giroud, Sturridge, Vardy, Sanchez will end up scoring 5 or 10 more or less goals than the model predicts (one may get a dreadful injury and only score a handful!) and that will end up giving them the usual around 20-25 goals that is needed to say get the golden boot.

Thanks for the reply. Bottom line seems to be (as I thought it might) that looking back at the data can often exclude the failures and only look at the successes (or at least will be a biased sample) and that even for the "fantasy gold", on a game by game basis, stuff will happen to certain players but before the event there is no way of knowing to which players. Therefore looking at Alexis Sanchez or Sergio Aguero, if they stay fit and play all available minutes (even in a sample size of one game) then they are likely to outscore the prediction but there is just as much chance they will not play as many minutes and come off worse.

Is this a potential area to target from the RMT model then, picking players with one-off reasons for lower points in previous seasons (e.g. one big injury or falling out of favour with a previous manager) or are these factors already accounted for more-or-less by a combination of looking at the betting models and your manual input?

One tip which I bet very few people know is that you can use the projected minutes in the projections to find potential bargains and players to keep an eye on.

i.e. scroll down the midfielders projections and look for players with lower predicted minutes. Perversely, these players represent better fantasy options than the players who are projected to score the same number of points but are more nailed on to start as the more risky player has the potential to score points at a higher rate, were their minutes to increase. Also another small but significant effect with these players is that although they will score on average similar points to the players who are projected to score similar points but are more nailed on, if these players were to miss a match (e.g. due to rotation then you will hopefully get points from your bench instead). That is why these players will be better in your RMT built team than the players who are more nailed but are projected similar points.

So these players are risky picks but they if they do play, they will exceed their average, if they don't play, then rather than get 0, you will hopefully get some points from your bench increasing the value of that player than just the projected points suggests!

            Does that make sense?!

Ha- good question Tony! I don't actually know- sorry! I will suggest one thing though, if you are considering wildcarding after 3 gws, I would suggest the 'highest scoring' team on RMT after 3 weeks may not be the absolute best to start with because it may not offer the flexibility that you need to make the most out of your two free transfers. e.g. I'm trying to make sure I have a route to Payet for gw2 or gw4 and/or Kane gw2. My gw1-6 RMT score might be higher with them in it but not if I take into account my gw1 score added to my new gw2-6 score if I bring in one of Kane or Payet gw2 and beyond.

How do you decide how to distribute a sides defensive points?

For example is Phil Jones (13.65 points for the first 6 weeks) taking away points from Bailly (16.85) when the likelihood is that Bailly starts all 6 and Jones only makes a few sub appearances at best? If so, how do you decide the split?

These playing probabilities are decided primarily by Mark and they should be consistent with the predicted line-ups in the Team News section when they are updated.

RMT has not been updated for a few days now so it is likely that Bailly will go up (he was very impressive in the Community Shield!) and Jones will, as a result, go down when the next update happens. This should be tomorrow morning so have a look then.

In terms of pure improvement- Chelsea mainly because they performed so far-below expectation last year. Saying this, I'm not sure any of the Chelsea defenders are that tempting from an FPL point of view because their pricing seems to have built into them the likely renaissance of the Chelsea team.

At the other end of the table, I think the promoted teams look less leaky than usual but again the lack of 4.0 players from these teams is a bit of a turn-off. The only promoted defender I'm looking at at the moment is Friend for 4.5. Also, maybe Sunderland will tighten up this year and built on their good results at the end of last season. Kone might prove to be good value at 4.5.

I am interested in a promoted goalkeeper though as goalkeepers are much better at dealing with bad fixtures than defenders due to save points. So if it looks like Jakupovic will start on Saturday, he will be in my team with (probably) Foster.

Can you bring back your Rate My Team computer section to the Scoutcast, even if it's only for a one-off? It was good fun hearing Mark and Granny debate the RMT data, especially as I knew Mark already understood how it worked but Granville less so.

      Hi

I am using RMT to optimize the team based og the projected point. Therefore heavily dependent of the projected points

Last season RMT seemed to adapt very slowly (haz not performing and Mahrez performing). The Watchlist seemed to adapt much faster. I know from the RMT videos only very few input variables. What are the input variables for the model and what are they based on? Are RMT based on underlying statistics and regularly updated (fx. defensive / attacking strength)

I often find a mismatch between the watchlist rating and the RMT rating. The watchlist seem to be made subjectively, but by looking at a lot of underlying statistics. I have a feeling that RMT mostly are updated by the probabilities of playing, but not so mush else?

It would be excellent with a detailed explanation of the input variables that feeds the projected model - to get at feeling ig one could relax almost just looking at the RMT or which areas are left out that one find important.

Hi Rama, it's great to hear from you!

RMT takes a lot of time each week to keep it up to date as things are always changing. There are three things that gradually change over the course of the season; 1.) players' probabilities of playing, 2.) players' rates of scoring, assisting, e.t.c. and 3.) overall team attack and defence parameters.

With 1.) (playing probabilities) I think we do a fantastic job- especially if you look at RMT on the main decision night (Friday evening).

With 2.) (players' rates of scoring, assisting e.t.c) I have thought has often been the one area we are weaker on. It is interesting to hear that you think this too. When I first set up the model, I used a more simplistic (but still very good model) to quickly approximate rates for all things, goal-scoring, assists, yellows, reds, bonus, ogs. For example the ogs model is just very simple (defenders have the highest og rates, strikers have the lowest) and this is fitted properly to historical data. The goalscoring model is more complicated. Early on, I decided that there were too many instances were something very hard to programme had happened. (Maybe Lampard was injured, so Drogba was now on pens or even harder to program, someone was now playing OOP) so I gave the updater the ability to manually edit the rates.

As far I am aware we aim to update these every few weeks and often we do but I would agree with you that sometimes RMT is slow to react to short-term shifts to scoring rates.

With 3.), I update team parameters and whilst I would like to update these every week, I sometimes only get round to doing it every month or so. Thankfully, teams generally are much slower to change than players so usually we're never significantly far out from what the market is suggesting when I come to update the model.

The watchlist is a separate thing to RMT, which seems to updated very regularly, but I also agree that it should tally with what RMT suggests.

With all these things, it takes lots of time to update the model. Hearing people using RMT and finding it useful is really great to hear and gives me more motivation to make sure it is as good as it can possibly be! 🙂

Hi Professor, thanks for stopping by. The RMT tool is invaluable for planning, and I was wondering how hard it would be to tweak the before/after transfers comparison. For instance, instead of just comparing the scores of:

      a) team with Player A from GW1 to GW8 and
      b) team with Player B from GW1 to GW8

it would be useful to compare with the predicted score of:
      c) team with Player A from GW1 to GW4 and Player B from GW5 to GW8

would this add too much complexity to the tool? Cheers!

Hi Rvaz- it looks like yours is the last message. I hope you're still around to read my reply- sorry it's taken so long to get to you.

When I first built RMT I had it on my own website and had to learn HTML and PHP on the fly to do it. It's been around 5 years since I last personally did any HTML/PHP coding so I would probably find it very time-consuming to edit the code and make those changes.

However, there has been talk of FFS re-writing the RMT code from scratch so that it is much easier for a coder to add in new suggestions like the one you make. Currently, I don't think it's high up on the priority list for the site, but we'll see...

However, as long as you're happy to work in different windows, you can do what you want, if I haven't misunderstood what you are asking. You can use the 'First gameweek' and 'Last gameweek' drop downs and use shift on your keyboard to open up a different window which views your team over a different period- then change which weeks you're looking at. I have a feeling I haven't quite understood what you were after though?

No worries, thanks for the reply. You did understand my question. It is indeed possible to open several different windows to consider different scenarios separately. I was just wondering if one could explore all the different hypotheticals within the same window, but I understand it could get messy. Cheers!

Which is better out of the following:

    a) Hazard, Firmino, Musa

    OR

    b) Lamela, Mane, Vardy

Currently on b) but a) seems a safer bet...

      you'll get about 5 answers, including mine, and each one of those would be incorrect. No standout option yet. {Note: I'm on Amat}

Is Kone (SUN) nailed? They have Kaboul, O Shea and they signed Djilobodji from Chelsea.

I find that the ratings are not updated after the friendlies that have taken place? There are players like delefeu, Redmond , playing out of position whos value has remained unchanged in the rate my team tool... When will this get updated ?

      E) None of the above? Liverpool have difficult matches 3 of the 4 first weeks. I'd wait till gw5

Doesn't mean anything. Liverpool always play better against better oposition.

If Everton sign Williams as expected- do you think he is a better shout than Baines??
Worried about Baines not being bothered to take penalties anymore.
