This afternoon we launch the first captain poll of the season, listing the very best armband prospects for Gameweek 1.

You can find the pool in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

With a home tie against Sunderland it would be no surprise to see Sergio Aguero dominate Fantasy managers’ thinking.

Those handing the armband to the striker, who with 39% ownership is the Fantasy Premier League’s most popular player, will be buoyed by Sunderland’s disastrous away record at Manchester City in recent years. The Black Cats have conceded 15 goals in their last four Premier League away fixtures to City, including last season’s 4-1 hammering.

However, under new boss David Moyes the Sunderland backline may present Aguero with a sterner test. In his last four seasons at Everton Moyes was only beaten once away to City in the league.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic could offer a viable captaincy alternative away to Bournemouth, particularly after scoring against Leicester City on his competitive debut for Manchester United in Sunday’s Community Shield. Those expecting the big Swede, who is owned by 35.7% of FPL managers, to use his height to full effect again may be disappointed: last season the Cherries conceded the fewest headed goal attempts in home matches.

Among the promoted side’s strikers Burnley’s Andre Gray (11.2% FPL ownership) could be the pick of the bunch. He certainly has form on his side, after netting nine goals in six pre-season outings. In addition, he faces a Swansea side that has had to cope with late returns of many of their Euro 16 stars, including skipper Ashley Williams who is far from certain to be on the Swans’ teamsheet.

Despite missing pre-season, Gylfi Sigurdsson could factor into Fantasy managers’ thinking for Swansea. With Andre Ayew’s departure seemingly imminent, the Icelandic international, who has a 9.3% ownership, looks to be the outright pick of the Swans assets this season.

For Southampton’s home game against Watford Dusan Tadic has done enough in pre-season to impress. Under new manager Claude Puel he has been fielded in friendlies in an advanced central attacking role at the tip of a midfield diamond. This has gone largely unnoticed by FPL managers, with just 4.6% owning the Serb. New recruit from Norwich, Nathan Redmond, is another possibility for those looking to take a captaincy punt on a Saints player, but with pitch time not guaranteed he just failed to make our shortlist.

With just 26 minutes of pre-season action for West Ham, Dimitri Payet is not certain to start away to Chelsea, making him a risky pick for the armband. Nevertheless, once he gets into his stride we are expecting him to be a strong candidate to challenge Aguero for the captaincy in the Gameweeks to come. With 31% ownership he is also one of the most popular players in FPL.

Our final mention goes to Liverpool pair Sadio Mane and Robert Firmino, who are owned by 10.9% and 8.4% of FPL managers respectively. The midfield duo have four goals between them in pre-season and face an Arsenal defence decimated by injury and international tournament fatigue.

We will revisit the poll standings at the end of the week in the Gameweek 1 Captain Sensible article.

    3. Is Sanga a good idea?

Are people leaving out Williams, Stones, Ayew and anyone else who could be transferring away from current club?
In my opinion, Williams and Stones gather value if their moves to Everton and City go ahead, however I think that Ayew's transfer to West Ham diminishes his value slightly.
    What are others thoughts?

    RMT.

    Valdes
Stones - Bailly - Van Dijk
    Fernandinho - Xhaka - Mkhitaryan - Willian
    Lukaku - Rooney - Aguero (c)

    Subs:Jakupovic - Kante - Williams - Paredes

    Still got 2.5 ITB

      Honestly? Zero.

Stones: unsettled @ Everton or rotation risk @ City
Bailly: offers nothing going forward, raw on defense, so YC threat. Get Valencia instead.
Fernandinho, Kante and Xhaka offer nothing offensively (nor will Pogba whom you are considering, likely, at least not enough to match the inevitable 8.5 pricetag).
Lukaku is similar to Stones, so is Williams

Who wasn't? Bailly is an unknown commodity offensively and has yet to register a shot this offseason, if memory serves. He's very solid and pacey in the back, but why go for a CB on a team that uses flanks extensively and for whom Valencia has supplied a number of assists already in the offseason?

Thanks mate; I'm hoping Lukaku goes to Chelsea and Williams to Everton. Stones can change. I think Pogba is good going forward but you're right about the price tag and gains. Rooney can be swapped to Vardy might bring in Mahrez too.

Once Lukaku goes to Chelsea he becomes a rotation risk with Michy and/or Costa. Williams will do OK at Everton once Stones leaves, but for now I wouldn't touch either (maybe around your WC time). Pogba is OK going forward, but he will be an awful FPL player, IMO (think Fellaini only about 10x better in real life; he will assist the assister often, but you don't get points for those). Rooney needs to go, both from your team and United in general. He looks spent.

By the way, I'm all for punts and differentials even this early in the year, but not when 80% of your team is comprised of them. Also, sort out the trifecta of your holding mids (as in, get rid of all of them).

              Any better:

              Valdes/Jak

              Friend-Valencia-Van Dijk-Kone-Paredes

              Lingard-Mahrez-De Bruyne - Willian - Fletcher

              Vardy - Aguero - Negredo

Would you say Willian over Pedro then? I want Chelski coverage for WAT and BUR in GWs 2 and 3 but think this team gives me enough depth to bench Pedro/Willian if they're not starting.

Stones obviously only going in if he moves to City.

Good point re: Stoke v Mid. Thinking Gray for Negredo on the basis that Mid's attack was actually pretty weak last year.

      A for me. Some thoughts...

      - Kane is better value than Aguero for me, can invest the 2m extra in midfield.

      - Mkhitaryan is too risky to start, was a sub in charity shield.

      - Valencia looks to have a better assist potential than Shaw. Though he could face competition from Darmian.

It's a weak midfield, but one of my favourite drafts for an early WC. What do you think?

    Foster, Jaku
    Ivanovic/Azpi, Shaw, Friend, McAuley (4.0)
    Siggy, Eriksen, Redmond, Gaston (D.Gray)
    Aguero, Ibra, Vardy

It's obvious where the midfield cash has gone, but Redmond and Demarai Gray could all be big price risers this year IMO. When the right premium mid and 6.5 striker options become clear I will downgrade at least one of the forward line if neccessary. But if I keep this draft i'll almost certainly WC after GW3.

Looks good, I like vardy. I would probably do siggy to bolasie, Eriksen to hazard though.

7.5 mid is one of the toughest spots to pick. I like Fabregas, Oscar, Siggy, Ayew... but yeah that's an option.

I thought I'd hate a team with Aguero, Ibra, and Vardy in it. This is interesting to me. Obviously have to hope Siggy and Eriksen produce.

I like the Redmond pick. I think he's a classy player I'm just not sure about his game time.

I'm gambling on him playing upfront as he has been doing in pre season.

Tough to say - Austin, Long, J rod All fighting for 2 maybe 3 positions.

So the burning question - what are you going to call your team?

    I'm currently on Spandau Bailly

The commentators better not call him Bay lee

    Forster / Jaku
    Baines / Soare / Friend / Paredes / Wilson
    Hazard / Mahrez / Redmond / Deulofeu / Ramirez
    Kun / Vardy / Negredo

Doesn't seem like a lot of people are going for mahrez to start. Is this due to the prospects of tadic deulofeu siggy Ayew haz ?

Vardy seems to be the preference/flavor of the day.
