This afternoon we launch the first captain poll of the season, listing the very best armband prospects for Gameweek 1.

You can find the pool in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

With a home tie against Sunderland it would be no surprise to see Sergio Aguero dominate Fantasy managers’ thinking.

Those handing the armband to the striker, who with 39% ownership is the Fantasy Premier League’s most popular player, will be buoyed by Sunderland’s disastrous away record at Manchester City in recent years. The Black Cats have conceded 15 goals in their last four Premier League away fixtures to City, including last season’s 4-1 hammering.

However, under new boss David Moyes the Sunderland backline may present Aguero with a sterner test. In his last four seasons at Everton Moyes was only beaten once away to City in the league.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic could offer a viable captaincy alternative away to Bournemouth, particularly after scoring against Leicester City on his competitive debut for Manchester United in Sunday’s Community Shield. Those expecting the big Swede, who is owned by 35.7% of FPL managers, to use his height to full effect again may be disappointed: last season the Cherries conceded the fewest headed goal attempts in home matches.

Among the promoted side’s strikers Burnley’s Andre Gray (11.2% FPL ownership) could be the pick of the bunch. He certainly has form on his side, after netting nine goals in six pre-season outings. In addition, he faces a Swansea side that has had to cope with late returns of many of their Euro 16 stars, including skipper Ashley Williams who is far from certain to be on the Swans’ teamsheet.

Despite missing pre-season, Gylfi Sigurdsson could factor into Fantasy managers’ thinking for Swansea. With Andre Ayew’s departure seemingly imminent, the Icelandic international, who has a 9.3% ownership, looks to be the outright pick of the Swans assets this season.

For Southampton’s home game against Watford Dusan Tadic has done enough in pre-season to impress. Under new manager Claude Puel he has been fielded in friendlies in an advanced central attacking role at the tip of a midfield diamond. This has gone largely unnoticed by FPL managers, with just 4.6% owning the Serb. New recruit from Norwich, Nathan Redmond, is another possibility for those looking to take a captaincy punt on a Saints player, but with pitch time not guaranteed he just failed to make our shortlist.

With just 26 minutes of pre-season action for West Ham, Dimitri Payet is not certain to start away to Chelsea, making him a risky pick for the armband. Nevertheless, once he gets into his stride we are expecting him to be a strong candidate to challenge Aguero for the captaincy in the Gameweeks to come. With 31% ownership he is also one of the most popular players in FPL.

Our final mention goes to Liverpool pair Sadio Mane and Robert Firmino, who are owned by 10.9% and 8.4% of FPL managers respectively. The midfield duo have four goals between them in pre-season and face an Arsenal defence decimated by injury and international tournament fatigue.

We will revisit the poll standings at the end of the week in the Gameweek 1 Captain Sensible article.

      1 Valencia for differential and assist potential
      2 No essential midfielders (Haz, Firmino, Alli are my favourites)
      3 Ibr

      1. Valencia now, Shaw later.
      2. No essential mids as there are so many quality alternatives. Wouldn't want to go without Hazard though.
      3. Ibra the safe option due to his ownership and likely high captaincy rate. Would prefer Kane otherwise.

    A) GRamirez + 4.5 forward

    Ramirez OR Wickham/Diouf would be in my starting 11.

    Martina-Friend-Shaw (Taylro-McAuley)

    Alli-Fàbregas-Iwobi-Payet (Kante)

      Not convinced Alli is worth 8.5, and Liverpool midfield rotation will be hard to predict but otherwise looks good. I would slightly downgrade both to 7.5 and beef up the defence a bit

          They simply have too many options I think. Best spell Firmino had last year he was playing oop, up front. Origi and Sturridge seems to be fit now. Behind the strikers competition is Coutinho and Wijnaldum. He played few games on the left. I would wait and see.

        I think this team is a little defence-heavy at the moment, but what do you think? Is it a solid team?

        Foster || Heaton
        Stones || Valencia || Morgan || VVD || Friend
        Mahrez || Redmond || Martial || Ayew || Lamela
        Aguero || Gray || Wilson

          Certainly is. Shift funds into midfield. Hazard, Firmino, Payet and Silva spring to mind

          1. stat
              9 years, 9 months ago

              Firmino is attainable as he's only 0.5m more than Ayew, and I'm thinking of making that switch and then maybe downgrading Stones. However, Ayew at West Ham has an easier start to the season than Firmino, though both have a chance of being played OOP.

            • stat
                9 years, 9 months ago

                Sorry I meant 1m more than Ayew

              Downgrade one of your mids to a 5.0 or 4.5 then upgrade one of the others

              1. stat
                  9 years, 9 months ago

                  I think Mahrez, Martial and Lamela are good buys.

                  Ayew and Redmond have the chance to become nailed-on and be played OOP, so at their prices they are at a good value. A 4.5m would only let me get a 9m mid, and apart from Firmino, I don't see any enticing options.

              Is having two 6.5 strikers (Gray and Long) worth a midfield of Hazard, Mahrez, Firmino and Mirallas?

              My reasoning further:
              Lots of mids in the region from 7-10.

              No strikers, bar Vardy Kane Ibra and Aguero in the topbracket. If more than 2 don't score in and out you will have to reshufle the funds.

              26mio seems enough spent on 3 attackers. If one of Gray or Long fail, a switch to Wilson looks to be on the cards.

                Tadic. Secure places are so important at the start of the season. Also number 10 roles are big in the game.

                Tadic can explode. Redmond will get a goal every now and again, I'd say 8 over the season. Both good picks 2bh.

                VAT's 20%, duty would depend on the item. (I think you pay VAT on top of duty - so add the duty first before adding 20% VAT).

              Looking for some thought's on this ramshackle of a team :-

              Foster
              Valencia/Evans/Souare
              Firmino/Hazrd/Tadic/Mahrz/Dier
              Long/Ibra

              Schmeichel/Friend/Carroll/Stones

              Tried juggling to get Kun in but really didn't want to lighten up on the Mid.

                  I would have if I could. I'm hoping that is my only issue.

              Foster || Jaku
              Valencia || Terry || Cedric || Friend || B.Smith
              Feg || Sanchez || Firmino || Hazard || Hjoberg
              Negredo || Aguero || Musa

              Anyone keen for Kouyate? Had a good preseason but risk of rotation?

              I'm not convinced by ibra but i can't see any other decent options (assuming you have aguero).

              its either:

              Kun - Ibra/Kane - 6.5
              or,
              Kun - 6.5 - 6.5

              Its true that ibra takes away some balance but Kane seems the only other alternative and he's only 0.5 cheaper anyway. Every forward 10mil and down has big question marks imo

                Vardy? The fixtures are perfect for him (Hull + a bunch of possession teams)

                  last season their game relied so much on winning the ball, punting it forward, then vardy scoring. Without kante they can't win the ball so easily so the whole process is damaged

              Fabregas+Silva or Deufelu + Hazard

              Foster-Forster
              Shaw-Moreno-Friend(Pieters,Nyom)
              Hazard-Lamela-Tadic-Deufelu(Capoue)
              Ibra-Kun-Gray

              RTM And suggest please 🙂
