Gameweek 1 concludes at the Bridge, as Chelsea boss Antonio Conte becomes the final new manager to make his Premier League bow.

His opening task is far from straightforward. West Ham United arrive as opposition boasting one of the finest away records in the league under Slaven Bilic last season.

That included a 2-2 draw in the corresponding fixture, where goals from Manuel Lanzini and Andy Carroll earned the Hammers a point.

While Lanzini sits out tonight’s match through injury, Carroll is in the starting line-up although Dimitri Payet can only make the bench.

The Frenchman could yet see action and will surely post the biggest threat to Conte’s rearguard once on the pitch. His 28% ownership will certainly be desperate for him to make an appearance.

Chelsea have their own gamechanger in Eden Hazard. The Belgian starts for the Blues as he auditions for the heavy-hitter midfield role in our squads.

There’s no shortage of talent on show. We can only hope that translates to points and a Monday night spectacle.

Just a quick attempt at some early scare-mongering... 😉

    http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/15705/

    Ibrahimovic (C)
    - Look at how Man United rank for goal attempts and shots inside the box.
    - Look at how Southampton rank for goal attempts conceded, goal attempts in the box conceded, big chances conceded, headed goal attempts conceded and errors leading to a chance.
    - Man United played an awful lot of long balls last game, supply could be could out easily, despite playing at home.
    - Southampton have Fonte and Bertrand coming back.
    - Man United have Pogba available, which we've no idea how this will affect the 4 players in front of him.

    Aguero (C)
    - Stoke notoriously cause problems for Man City at the Britannia.
    - We've no idea if Man City are still the same on the road as last year.
    - Half of Stoke's chances conceded in the box were aerial balls which we don't expect Aguero to capitalise on given his height.
    - Two important Champion's League games coming up for Man City.... reduced minutes or rotation a possibility for Aguero depending on the way things go.
    - Man City lacking an edge against Sunderland and narrowly won it. Stoke could cause massive problems as usual.

Might actually be a good week to go maverick in captaincy, while statistically the damage threshold of Ibra and Kun seems lower than normal. Time to think outside the box? Fortune favours the brave? 😉

Good result in CL game tomorrow for City night could take the pressure off them. Also helps that they play on Tues - Sat - Wed which eases rotation issues.

For me I don't know how any meaningful assumptions can be made of a sample size of one gameweek.

A move away from either of those players would appear a risk in my opinion.

      1. Bøwstring The Carp
        • 14 Years

It is a small sample size for United at least

Southampton have been stonewall even in preseason though. Yes you can argue it's preseason blah blah blah, but they have been consistent in their defending and have been very well disciplined in these games regardless of who they faced.

All depends how they cope on the road I guess, but I do see Southampton as one of the best defences in the league and with Fonte/ Bertrand coming back it can only be a positive

It's not really blah blah to say it was preseason though is it?

By and large the played a pile of bucket Dutch sides to gain a bit of fitness.

Anyway your table is one gameweek for EPL where Southampton played for me a relegation candidate and still conceded.

These are the two top captaincy candidates for this week as shown by the poll but already it looks evident that they will be the games two heavyweights this season.

To look elsewhere for a captaincy option to me is an unnecessary risk in gw2, in my opinion of course.

Not disagreeing on captaincy candidacy at all, but Watford are far from a relegation candidate based on last season and three new weaker teams arriving, and what the table should tell you is that Southampton hardly conceded a shot against them. Here as well:

            https://twitter.com/MC_of_A/status/764497122679021569?lang=en

Sure, they conceded that early goal:

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2XEVaoWrSk

Much perfectible defending, letting ball drop in middle of your box like that, but from Watford a lucky shot too, from a bad position and just barely avoided hitting the block.

Other than that, Southampton conceded absolutely nothing in the whole match and were the unluckiest team not to win on the first GW.

              "For me".

That's my i use for personal opinion and I believe Watford will be in a relegation scrap the reality is from gw20-38 they were very poor.

Add to that a new manager, a possible move to a back three and Ighalo playing as woefully as he has in 2016 and I think it's a possible that they will be involved in a relegation battle which makes them relegation candidates.

What I'm saying is Southampton were at home, Southampton are a decent side, and I didnt rate the opposition one bit. Did Southampton restrict Watford or were Watford totally devoid of quality? Either way Southampton still conceded.

Now go away from home to Old Trafford. Much harder game playing away to one of the favourites for the title than playing at home to one not far off the top of the pile for relegation.

I wouldn't be worried about captaining Zlatan on the basis of him playing Southampton anyway.

Also, are the prices rising/dropping tonight? With what confidence do we know that? Still based 100% on the assumption that the algorithm is what it was in the end of the last year, which it has not for two seasons now been.

Ayew to Lamela. Don't take a hit. Oscar doesn't have pens but still played quite well.

    Townsend owners:

Keep him for one more week?
Plays v Spurs so should be extra motivated, he still shoots like crazy, so maybe just hope for a 30 yarder? 😀

Thing is I have 0.5 ITB and could make a Townsend --> Lamela swap.
But one week more information and 2 FT could be worth it to hold him.

I'll be keeping him for a few more gws i expect.

Pretty good fixtures apart from Spurs whom he may be extra determined vs, as you say.

I can't see too many options better at a similar price - other than maybe Redmond who can be negated by Tadic and may eventually not be first choice

Have Hart and Jakupovic. Transfer Hart out for GW2 or play Jakupovic and leave Hart on bench to see if he can over turn Willy?

How many casuals will miss the deadline this week or the fact it's so early in the season mean they will all be active enough to update?

Leics won't get a clean sheet so you may as well play Jakupovic

Burnley may play very disciplined and hard to break down though? Mané may be better as a counter attacker??

Yeah I love that! Would be similar to what I would want if I played the normal format. In a draft league though so my best options for captain next week are...
