The Stock Check

Typically, Zlatan Ibrahimovic ensures that he crashes the Paul Pogba party, but the impact of the Frenchman’s energy at Old Trafford was there for all to see. Here’s the Stock Check after Friday’s night’s Gameweek 2 opener.

On the Rise

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Friday’s Gameweek opener has made it almost impossible to ignore him.

While his performances have hardly been vintage, Ibrahimovic’s ability to score goals has been in evidence from the get-go and his impact devastating.

Paul Pogba’s arrival as the legs and possession winner in midfield has almost enabled the Swede to settle in the role he does best – now he can almost afford to drift in and out of the game, cropping up to provide moments of quality in the box where it matters.

Already the most transferred in tonight, it’s Hull City up next and the international break gap – multiple price rises look assured.

Luke Shaw
Just as Antonio Valencia looked to have the advantage, Shaw responded with a barnstorming display down the left. The assist for United’s penalty compounded an impressive display.
Again Pogba could be the influence here. Lining up on the left side of the double pivot, his ability to dominate possession could now see the power swing to the left side and promote Shaw as the choice full-back.

However, Valencia was just three behind Shaw in the Bonus Point System, despite his assist. We will continue to monitor but for now, Valencia remains our choice.

Paul Pogba
It was obvious that Pogba’s energy lifted United and brought the best out of those around him – it’s perhaps less obvious how the Frenchman will rate as a Fantasy asset.

He had more touches than any other player, he had more attempts on goal than any other United player but we need more time to see if that translates to returns to justify the 8.5 outlay.

In Decline

Wayne Rooney
Whilst Rooney chipped in with the assist for Ibrahimovic’s opener, when the Swede took the ball to stroke home United’s second, the skipper’s fate was sealed. The 2.5 price difference was tempting but Ibrahimovic has already made his mark, leaving Rooney playing second fiddle now and, most likely, throughout the season.

Notably, it’s also been Rooney, not the Swede who has been withdrawn in both league outings late on.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Strange comments re Rooney in the article. Mark seems to ignore the £2.5m saved and it's potential reward elsewhere. As for being withdrawn, both times it was in the 89th minute. 😕

      • 11 Years

I so want to be in the non-Ibra camp, but he just looks in the mood where statistically he'll be hopeless, could only get 1 shot per 90 minutes, and still score every match.

I have crumbled, he went in last night.

      1. THE Wild Rover
        • 16 Years

I'm not suggesting people don't get him, just find it odd that Rooney has been dismissed before the £2.5m has played yet.

        1. Ziro
          • 11 Years
          10 years, 5 days ago

yeah, Rooney is ok by himself, but when his fellow striker is Ibra, then hard to justify saving that 2.5. A few cheap options have emerged in defence and attack both, hence easing the path to Ibraland. 🙄

I so wanted not to have Ibra (was eyeing Rooney myself if he retained pens) and be proven right :cries:

      2. Ziro
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 5 days ago

Which to hint to your question is that Rooney will nowhere be near Ibra if the current trent continues. What sealed it for me was the pens. United have a few quick players MickyT, Martial, Valencia/Shaw etc who will dive in the box and win a fair few penalties, they may just be what tides over Ibra during the few lean moments he'll have.

It's not looking as ridiculous as it initially sounds. 20 ppg is a good return for 20.5M. I'd not want to go without Aguero while he's still fit, though. But when he gets the inevitable injury, then maybe.

    Foster/Jaku
    Friend-Amat-Stones(Wolshied/Fry)
    Mahrez-Alli-Tadic-Firminio
    Gray-Ibra-Kun
The initial plan was to get Hazard and Redmond for Tadic and Alli/Firminio(whoever blanks) now with the price changes , it seems I might need to get Ramirez to accommodate Haz.

After yesterday's match and Zlatan's ownership going up, I think it's time we non-owners accept our mistake and get him upfront with Kun. I personally think we can get more point with the extra money without Zlatan, but his ownership can hurt us.

Tadic was close to points again. Offside headed goal, close to getting on the end of Redmond's cross and a decent snap shot just wide near the end. He's frustrating me with his lack of points but its only a matter of time. I'm not shipping him out yet.

So much pain.. still I'm sure a high % of teams don't have both Kun and Ibra so let's hope Kun can a least match Ibra score.

So last night despite going completely against my normal strategy, I knew jerked.

I did Kane --> Ibra and a midfield enabling transfer.

    Pros:
    - Gained some team value which can be important.
    - whatever Kane does today, I want Ibra for next week so saved £ doing now
    - if it backfires can always WC next week

    Cons:
    - Risky making transfers this early due to injuries etc
    - Had to pre-empt a midfield transfer b4 seeing today's games

Is it going to pan out, who knows? But, I've made my bed.

Not going to post until GW is over, but will be lurking.

I think you are in quite a large group of people who brought in Ibra before prices.

I had 0.5 so could upgrade Kane with one transfer, did not want to lose that option and be forced to downgrade elsewhere to fund.

With Ibra ownership, goal scoring form and history just seems crazy not to bring him in and cover any more losses.

Whether it was necessary to do it early rather than wait to see what else unfolds and accept the price shifts is questionable, may work out, may not

Surely he won't bag 38 goals.... Will he?

He surely he can't keep getting a goal from a solo shot every game. It's ridiculous. Penalties will get him plenty though.

His conversion won't stay so high but I can see Man U gel.ing and creating more chances as they get used to each other and mourinho so perhaps it won't have to

Penalties is the game changer. If Roo was on them, I'd have stayed away from Ibra. He's near essential now.

Just before the deadline of 1st gw, it was hard to see them because most lineups contained Kun-Gray-Vardy.
