Having already acquired Christian Benteke in this transfer window, Crystal Palace further bolstered their striking options with the signing of Chelsea forward Loic Remy on a season-long loan.

The 29-year-old will once again link up with his former manager at Newcastle Alan Pardew, and speaking to the club’s official website, the Palace boss expressed his delight at being able to secure the Frenchman’s services:

“Loic has been a target of mine throughout this transfer window and I’m delighted the deal has been done. I brought him to Newcastle so I know what he is capable of and I am convinced he will be a quality addition to our squad as we evolve. Loic has international and Champions League experience as well as being a Premier League title winner and is the latest example of the high calibre of players we have brought into the club during this transfer window.”

The History

Remy joined Lyon’s youth academy at the age of 12, and progressed all the way to the first-team, making his professional debut against Saint Etienne in October 2006.

With Remy struggling for first-team action at Lyon, he joined Lens on loan in January 2008, producing four goals and two assists in 12 appearances before moving to Nice in the summer of 2008.

Over the next two seasons, Remy thrived as a regular starter, scoring 30 goals and bagging eight assists in 75 appearances in all competitions. He was linked with a move to Stoke, but ended up joining Marseille in August 2010 for a fee of around €15 million.

His two-and-a-half-year spell with the French giants continued to see Remy flourish as one of the leading strikers in Ligue 1, racking up 42 goals and 13 assists in 111 outings for the club.

He was on the move again in January 2013, signing for QPR for around £8 million. He was unable to prevent the club being relegated to the Championship, but did score six goals in 14 Premier League matches.

Remy moved to Newcastle on loan in 2013/14, and continued to impress in the Premier League, scoring 14 goals and grabbing three assists in just 26 matches.

Those performances convinced Chelsea to sign the striker in August 2014, but Remy has struggled for first-team action over the last two seasons, only managing 47 appearances in all competitions, totalling 12 goals and three assists.

Having scored five goals in 15 matches at Under 20 and Under 21 levels, Remy was afforded a senior debut for France in a 1-0 defeat to Nigeria in June 2009. He has made 31 appearances for his country, scoring seven goals.

The Prospects

While club-record Benteke looks set to be the centrepiece of the Palace attack this season, it was clear Pardew needed to add further goals to his side.

The Eagles scored just 39 times last season, ranking them as the joint-third lowest scorers, and have netted only once in the first three Gameweeks.

Pardew interestingly switched from his usual 4-2-3-1 formation to a 4-4-2 on Benteke’s league debut against Bournemouth on Saturday, with the Belgian playing alongside Connor Wickham in attack. Should Pardew look to favour the latter system, Remy could compliment Benteke perfectly, with the France international’s pace and dynamism in contrast to Benteke’s strength, aerial ability and hold up play.

Remy is a versatile attacker, though, capable of also playing wide on the right, whereas the former Liverpool striker is an out-and-out target man. Should Pardew use the Frenchman on the right wing, Andros Townsend could have some competition for his place, or he may shift over to the left wing, leaving Wilfried Zaha’s spot in doubt.

Certainly, if Pardew keep faith in the 4-4-2, we could see the Eagles putting a lot more crosses into the box, as they did last Saturday, which could boost the assist potential of Townsend and Jason Puncheon.

Priced at 6.4 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Remy could provide excellent value should he be able to secure a regular starting berth, although having had little football over the past few months, it could take him some time to regain full match sharpness.

Coming in at just 1.0 more, Benteke is currently our favoured attacking asset at Selhurst Park, particularly after he revealed he’s determined to take penalty duties off Yohan Cabaye, after the midfielder missed his second successive spot-kick in the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth. The former Newcastle player could also be set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up a groin injury whilst on international duty.

Palace’s fixtures in the short-term (mid, STO, sun) are pretty favourable, but with Pardew’s side struggling for form, and both Benteke and Remy short of match fitness, there are no guarantees either player will hit the ground running at their new club. Pardew’s decision to hand Benteke 90 minutes last weekend, though, was an indication that he’s desperate for the new boys to make an impact.

Certainly, Remy’s history under Pardew offers encouragement that the Palace boss can once again get the best out of him. Whether he can better Benteke as a Fantasy prospect remains to be seen.

    Best Aguero replacement.

Yes, I know he hasn't been banned yet. But let's assume he's unsuccessful in his appeal.

What I'm keen to find out from you is who is the best striker replacement? And how much of that decision is based on form, fixture, wildcarding, or the need to get Aguero back in.

As a Derby fan i've seen Grant play loads. He's a good shot stopper but is prone to the odd horror show.

Lets put it this way - I've replaced Aguero with Kane.

No Dembele, when will people learn. 😉

When Dembele returns then consider Kane, but he's a no go until then.

The important point here being consider him, but don't transfer him in unless you fancy taking a punt!!

No guarantee he will hit the same form as last season now he has Janssen competing for the main striker role, IMHO.

For me either Diego Costa (strong underlying stats and form) looks an ideal replacement.

Benteke is a slight risk - but one I think worth taking.

I'm not so sure on Lukaku - his form is poor and I just wonder if Barkley may offer similar returns - at a kinder price.

Obviously if you don't own Ibrahomovic he should be the number one replacement.

Agree with all of this. Giroud is another one under the radar. If he remains target man he should score big with such a great midfield behind him.

Lukaku despite being a troll will still get goals, those fixtures are too good.

I'm monitoring bony to, he was a great fire and forget player when at Swansea! A goal every other game with a trickle of bonus. I think Stoke have enough about them to make this realistic.

      Costa for me.

He has the form and a nice fixture this week, plus a great record against Swansea. I know he can pick up bookings very easily and doesn't attract baps but he has one of the best teams in the league behind him and no Champions League rotation to worry about.

I mentioned this yesterday but how much does this matter?

Last year Swansea took 4 points of Chelsea. But I keep hearing people refer to Costas record against the Swans because he scored 5 against them 2 seasons ago.

Swanseas style, players and manager have all changed since then.

Personally I think it was a case of an in form player playing in an in form team, rather than the opposition he was playing against. If he scores this weekend it will be for the same reason, rather than any particular record against Swansea.

Any of Kane, Lukaku, Benteke, Bony who will all of a sudden show form from GW4 onwards. Problem is , impossible to predict exactly when they'll find their stride, might take until GW7 for all of them. Leaning towards Benteke or Bony, just as much because of price.

I'm going to be honest on my wildcard and I have not really thought about my team beyond t.v building . I understand why you are going for Costa he will consistently chip in with 6 or so points every week . He managed a few hauls in his first season and one of them was against Swansea . The only way this is going to backfire is if you are stubborn and refuse to get Lukaku if he starts firing .

Benteke - Solid. Bedding into new team may share mins with Remy
Costa - Card magnet. May sahre mins with Batsy
      Zaza - Unknown. Decent fixtures

IMO the best replacement is upgrading the midfield. If you've previously run with kun and Ibra the midfield is most likely weaker. By downgrading kun to e.g. Lukaku the midfield can be strengthened massively. Of course this requires at least a 4 point hit or a wc. But If the 3-match ban is still in you've got time to save up some FT's

I think it is perfect time to take a punt...Benteke, Bony, Lukaku...go with proven PL scorer in bad form and hope he discover's it.
If there was a "red card imminent" table i think Costa would be way ahead of everyone else, also his lack of BP is annoying. I would avoid him especially if you are on WC.

I'm going to gamble on Lukaku, in fact i thing i will tripple up on Everton (Baines, Barkley,Lukaku) and hope they do well in next 2-3 games. I'm holding my WC to get Kun back so i will not have problems to remove them if it fails.

What i meant is that he is a red card waiting to happen...if you bring him on WC and he gets a red card and a 3 match ban, you'll want to dump him, and when you dump him for someone like Benteke you'll have a lot of cash and no FT to spend it. If you have your WC, then you could use it and rearrange your team.

For me there's not much to pick between Benteke, Lukaku, Bony or Defoe. Costa has a slight edge on all of em.
It is so hard to pick who will hit form beforehand, so how I can redistribute the Aguero money is a big part of which striker I pick. With Bony, Benteke or Defoe I can get Sterling in for Ramirez and Sanchez in for Deulefous so It'll be one of those three.
Planning on WC GW 7-8 probs to bring Aguero back in.

Wild Card already used so the transferin out of Aguero has to be planned properly. I think Bony at Stoke looks good (fixtures easing up for them too), then when Aguero is back swap him in for the spluttering (hopefully) Negredo to bank a bit of profit whilst it is on the table - template forward line may end up being Ibra, Kun & Bony as a cheap(ish) 3rd forward (Benteke as the other option)

+1 This is exactly my plan, swap Kun to Bony/Benteke, then bring him back in for Negredo once I have made enough money out of him and people realize he is not that good an plummets in price.

I think Negredo may top out at 7.0 but I bought him at 6.6 so I need to eek another 0.1 rise before selling him at a 0.20 profit. Not sure it will be this GW though.

Bony and Benteke look great value and for me could be on par with Costa, Kane, Giroud, Lukaku etc for points from now to the end of the season

Giroud is my favorite striker atm, he was in great form in the spring and summer and Arsenal has some good fixtures coming up.

However, I am contemplating getting Iheanacho for the two fixtures, combined with a very strong midfield (sanchez - hazard - mahrez - antonio - townsend) and then WC when Kun gets back.

I can't see passed Lukaku with those fixtures. He may be a troll but 15+ goals in the 3 of the last 4 seasons (plus 6+ assists in all 4 of them) can't be discounted. He's guaranteed to get points it's just owning him at the right time that's the tricky part.

What about Rooney instead of Ibra. Thinking bony with stokes attacking three behind. Maybe too premature. I'm playing Rooney costa up front..can't decide whether to upgrade defoe to vardy or other maybe benteke(with new rules trying to grab pen takers) .... Or do I upgrade one of my mids, probably cazorla, also have hazard, Antonio, sterling, to Sanchez for two weeks. If Sanchez took pens definitely, but think I'll go to vardy, surely he is on pens now.

Rooney, costa, vardy then swap costa and vardy to kun and bentekke,(2 weeks to warm into palace attack)

Anyone considering Zaza at 7.0? His first eight fixtures for West Ham would be: Watford (H), West Brom (A), Southampton (H), Middlesbrough (H), Crystal Palace (A), Sunderland (H), Everton (A), Stoke (H).

Could be a nice differential if he hits the ground running, especially with everyone opting for Lukaku/Benteke/Bony.

    RM(wc)T:

    Foster-Pickford
    Chambers-Amat-Valencia-McAuley-Williams
    Haz-Antonio-Capoue-Sterling-Sanchez
    Ibra-Lukaku-Negredo

This is the current state of my WC team. I'm currently struggling with the defense. I really want baines, but then I have to lose valencia. And I really don't like that many other 5M options than williams. Also unsure if Chambers will be nailed. Previously had Nsue which looked really attacking and could provide extra points, but with the arrival of chambers, who knows what will happen? Would anyone consider downgrading sanchez to ozil to accomodate more expensive defense?

    1. Tiamani Warrior
      • 12 Years

I've spent the same on my defence but have gotten baines over williams by downgrading 4.5 (chambers) to kingsley. I realize he may not play much longer but the .1 will allow him to warm the bench until a new playing 4 emerges (probably bournemouth). think baines plus 4 is better than williams plus chambers

I can recall quite a few bans being given after games over the last few years. I think most players don't appeal (in most cases I don't think they have a leg to stand on). I just get the impression in general that the FA won't change their decision. By issuing the charge they have effectively decided Aguero is guilty. I think it would be a huge shock if he wins his appeal and they change their decision.

Lot of preference for Benteke over Bony. Stats are very similar:

    Benteke 152(51) 80 goals, average 0.39
    Bony 168 (46) 99 goals, average 0.46

I'm going Bony. Probably pens, main lone scorer. Better midfield behind him (Bojan, Shaqiri, Arnautovic) compared to Palace who don't score many goals.

Bony is not match fit, not even close.

that is the difference. -- 3 weeks from now, that's another story.

Trying to work out if PVA's an indulgent luxury or an inspired move...

Leaning towards inspired move, especially when their fixtures get better

Still can't decide whether to WC!! 🙁

    - taken a -4 already to do kun/townsend 》 kaku/ozil
    - potentially another hit for gray but don't mind benching for 1 week but will suffer price drop
    - will also suffer price drops for stones/pieters/friend(maybe) till next gw

    foster jaku
    valencia stones pieters friend souare
    hazard firmino redmond ozil cap
    ibra kaku gray
