Arsenal boosted their options up front earlier in the week by signing forward Lucas Perez from Deportivo La Coruna, after meeting his £17.1 million buyout clause.

The 27-year-old put pen to paper on a long-term contract with the Gunners, and speaking to the club’s official website, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger outlined some of the Spaniard’s main qualities:

“He’s a late developer in this position because he has always played on the flanks. He’s got a good eye for goal and had an outstanding season last year in a team that didn’t create too many chances… I believe he has the qualities to integrate into our team very well… He’s not only a goalscorer, he’s a guy who combines well with partners, who can give a final ball and makes good runs… I’m confident. He has pace, good technical levels, is a good finisher and he has the ingredients to be a success. It’s always a little bit of a gamble to come from one country to another, with different challenges, but I believe it was a gamble worth taking.”

The History

Perez’ career can certainly be described as a nomadic one, which started with stops at Alaves, Montaneros and Ordenes during his youth.

At the age of 18, he linked up with Atletico Madrid’s C-team, where he scored 18 goals in 55 appearances in a two-year spell, before joining Rayo Vallecano in 2009.

Perez only made seven first-team appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring once, instead finding himself as a regular in the ‘B’ side, where he scored 25 goals in 44 matches.

After once again failing to breakthrough at a Spanish club, Perez moved to Ukrainian outfit Karpaty Lviv in January 2011, and had a reasonably successful stint, scoring 15 goals and registering eight assists in 59 appearances. A loan spell at Dynamo Kiev in 2013 proved to be a disaster, though, with Perez failing to make a single appearance.

In July 2013, he embarked on a move to Greek side PAOK, where he bagged 12 goals and 16 assists from 52 matches. Then, ahead of the 2014/15 season, the frontman was sent on loan to Deportivo La Coruna. He did enough during that spell, scoring six goals and adding three assists, to help convince Depor to sign him on a permanent basis last summer.

The 2015/16 season was Perez’ real breakthrough campaign, scoring 17 goals and providing 10 assists in 36 league matches, impressive statistics in a side that only avoided relegation by four points.

The Prospects

With Perez possessing a decent turn of pace, clever movement and the ability to play across the forward line, it’s clear the Spaniard will provide the perfect alternative to target man Olivier Giroud.

Standing just under six foot, Perez only won four of the 17 headers he contested in 3141 minutes of La Liga action last term, while he’s not really a penalty box predator, with 34 of his 100 goal attempts coming from outside the box.

With Wenger unlikely to veer away from his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation, it’s expected the new signing will compete with the Frenchman for the lone striker spot, although he is also capable of playing out wide, particularly on the left.

Comparing the pair’s underlying statistics from last season, Giroud did hold the edge for goal attempts, averaging one every 24.1 minutes, compared to every 31.4 minutes for Perez. The former Deportivo forward shone more in terms of creativity, though, averaging a key pass every 43.6 minutes, superior to Giroud (67.5).

Should he get the nod as the lone striker, Perez’s inclusion could certainly offer the Gunners far more fluency in the front four positions, potentially interchanging with Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and perhaps Theo Walcott.

Perez has been priced at 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), slightly cheaper than Giroud, who’s available at 9.0. While the 27-year-old may provide an intriguing option, the chances are that he and Giroud will share playing time, meaning Sanchez and Ozil remain the safest routes into the Arsenal attack. Santi Cazorla provides a cheaper alternative should we continue to see an upturn in the number of penalties being awarded, although he faces far more competition for a place in Wenger’s starting XI.

After a tricky start to the new season, Arsenal’s fixture list (SOT, hul, CHE, bur, SWA, MID, sun) turns far more favourable over the next month and beyond, so owning one of their attackers appears something of a must over the coming period.

At this stage, opting for Perez could prove to be something of a gamble, with the move to Arsenal a considerable step up for a player who has spent the bulk of his career at a far lower level.

Similar to Leicester’s Jamie Vardy, Perez could be something of a late bloomer, though, and there’s a chance he may well emerge to be a viable option for our three-man frontlines at some point during the season.

For the time being, though, it’s Sanchez and Ozil, who both appeared to be returning to their best form in the Gameweek 3 victory over Watford, that should attract the bulk of our investment.

The closest thing to a no brainer for wildcarders surely is Antonio, I've been thinking of him as an option and there are hardly any downsides:

Good form, Will definitely not play in defence, very direct and can score, good fixtures, plays for good team, relatively cheap

    Agree?

Not entirely. If as we expect he plays RW (with Payet LW and Lanzini 10) then he faces stiff competition from Feghouli once he returns. Tore is also there but is most definitely 3rd choice RW atm.

Eh, I really don't think Feghouli's threat is too much, Antonio had a great season last year, started well and is going to be replaced by an unknown to the prem? Feghouli and Tore seem more like depth signings. If Antonio drops form then he may well be dropped, but at the moment I don't see it happening

Or let's look at it this way. If Bilic thought he was such a great RW'er why has be been playing @RB? My faith in Bilic to really get the best out of Ant on the RW is sorely tested. Didn't he lavish praise on Feghouli? Lanzini for me for the time being.

Just wildcarded, is there any improvements?

          New team:

          Foster (Heaton)
          Shaw, Morgan, Walker (Mcauley, Gibson)
          Hazard, Ozil, Sterling, Antonio (Capoue)
          Ibrahimovic, Bony, Defoe

          Old team:

          Courtois (Jaku)
          Shaw, Morgan, Stones, Walker (Mcauley)
          Hazard, Firmino, Redmond (Kante, Hojbjerg)
          Aguero, Kane, Long

Should I save my wildcard? Or is team 1 worth a wc?

Fair enough if you do mate. I would consider Watford away in GW5 at a push.

GW4 is MCI, I'm captaining him against a Kompany-less City. For the GW5 contenders Mahrez/Vardy/Lukaku/Kane have shown no form, so it's between Sanchez and Ibrahimovic who have a similar fixture but I'd cap Ibra for the pens. GW6 is a bit tricky, probably Aguero.

                          Sorry, GW4 is City home.

Can't disagree with your points. I'm keeping him but I don't think I'll be captaining him.

Yep, won't be captaining him either.

He's staying in my team though as, with Aguero out, he's the only striker with that scary high ownership about. Easier to keep him.

I think this a pretty unique situation given the hatred in the tweets up against the age of the tweets and the fact that he's alreay publicly apologized. I really could see a big suspension or just no suspension. No sure here. Going to wait it out.

I think because they also ended up adding a 2014 tweet to his charge wrap, that he wont get away with it. Can see them making an example of him. And quite rightly so.

He is going down. End of the day he has broken his employers rules and will be punished accordingly. Doesn't matter how long ago the tweets were. He wont be doing it again any time soon that is for sure. If my employer dins out I breached their rules 4 years ago they wouldn't just forget about it. They would apply the same rules as I committed the offence that day.

We've already exchanged back and forth on this. I hearya. I imagine if you're in the UK those laws and regulations matter more. In the USA, it would depend on whether the job was in the government and whether there was an arrest or conviction. If not, punishment by the organization could actually be illegal (I work in human resources, so know this stuff a bit).

Ok, regardless of this it is pretty simple. This company he works for has rules same as whatever company in USA would have. If they can legally punish him they will. They can and so they will.

In this case, yes. I think you're correct. In the bigger pic, policies vary by company, and then employment laws about what the company can do vary by country. So, it is tricky for a big multinational company. If an employee breaks a company's rule, that company may actually have to take different punitive actions depending on where the employee is located.

Forgot to look at fplstats for a day and Costa rises, which makes me lean to Lukaku more. Do we think he's a better pick than Costa?

Chelsea's got a nice record vs Swansea, but I have coverage in Hazard already...What annoys me with Costa is he'll very likely score, but then recieve no bonus.

He could score 2. At least he is scoring. The others aren't. I also have Hazard but always look at them individually.

Have none of them so can be impartial ;). Erm... you know, if you've no West Ham midfielders, Zaza could be a nice buy. The other 2 are fine, maybe slightly less quality behind them but they're proven goalscorers.

Definitely an option. But it looks like his lost pens which is a reason why he did well in FPL last season.

I hope Pardew doesn't play Benteke with Remy

I just can't see Benteke doing well in a 2 striker formation

Remy in the other hand I can see doing really well. Hence me getting him. I sense a 4-4-1-1 0r 4-4-2 coming.

Not a fan of his in FPL

He has played 3 games, 2 goals and 1 assist. Yet he only has 15 points...

Negredo for example has 1 goal and 2 assists and he has 21 points

Costa gets goals/assists but not much at all with bonus points. Add on top the -1s for yellow cards for good measure

Negredo is a terrible pick tbh and MID wont score many goals. I immediately forget he exists regardless of his points. MID have looked terrible and his stats are just not adding up. Costa is doing something Lukaku/Bentekke are not which is scoring goals. Your other points are valid but he is in form. The others are not.

True, Negredo looke a flash in the pan, but his point is that the equivalent in goals and assists to Costa is more than what is accrued in bread and butter points.

Costa seems far better than Lukaku in form, yes, but there's no getting away from the lack of bappage, discipline and assists.

I will take a striker that is scoring goals over one that isn't any day of the week tbh. Chelsea will tear Swans a new one and Costa will be involved. The rest are valid points but at the end of the day he is scoring and could have a field day with Hazard.

Cazorla, a viable option? Yay / Nay

Doesn't seem to be many going with him on this site? I guess Sanchez & Ozil put him in the shade as a FPL prospect! I like his chances, playing deeper than ideal I know but still has assist potential (doesn't he) and he is on pens, right?

Would love to hear some of your thoughts on the man...do you feel that he's assured of a starting berth in upcoming weeks?

Fair enough, not going with Sanchez myself (which could prove a mistake) and I'm a little wary of Ozil at da mo (unsure that he will be the assist king of last season). Santi could prove value in the long run but obviously unsure, that's the fun of it I guess 🙂

Should be fully rested and ready to start the next match.
A midweek CL tie will cloud the Arsenal selection issue over the next 2 GWs, though.

in my team. definite pens incoming (arsenal get so many...) and good assist potential (2 in gw1 cameo). as long as he remains in the starting 11 he's my guy. the trouble is figuring out how and when to drop him if he's sharing play time. downgrade to antonio seems a good option if need be.

Following the FA confirmation that Aguero would be out for the next two GWs, I expected rapid price rises, as all that Aguero cash floods the market.
But a combination of mass WC hysteria and casuals waiting until next Friday mean that this hasn't happened so far.
This international break may turn out to be a damp squib in terms of building team value.

Building team value on WC seems a thing of the past now. Swear it was the same last season as well. Just not enough movement

It can be done. It's just the worst week to try it is the one where everyone else is trying it. But you're right - same last season too.

And come the next international break even less people will be playing the game, so automatically there will be less transfers anyway. So unless they change the algorithm the price changes will still be slow.

But in general, it has very rarely been successful for pure value building.

Three seasons or so ago the first intl break spiralled the prices out of control - I guess that's why FPL Towers stopped WC transfers from counting. Can't really blame them.

We used to get 0.3 rises in the past, I recall.

That was probably before they started adjusting for WC's. There were very few 0.3 price rises last season.

Plus I feel the likelihood of more price rises during international breaks is over-rated. Most casuals switch off and anyway you don't make more transfers just because there is a 2-week break between GWs.

                                            A) Ozil and Lukaku
                                            or
                                            B) Sanchez and Defoe/Bony?

Finding it difficult to overlook everton's fixtures, even if it is Lukaku (and I already have Benteke in the squad) Ozil is also a long term move, whereas I'd likely have to use a FT on swapping Sanchez out for Aguero's return anyway
