Leicester’s summer recruitment drive came to its conclusion on Wednesday evening with the club-recordsigning of Sporting Lisbon forward Islam Slimani. The 28-year-old arrives for an undisclosed fee believed to be worth up to £29 million.

Slimani put pen to paper on a five-year contract with the Foxes and, speaking to the club’s official website, explained how he couldn’t turn down the opportunity to link up with compatriot Riyad Mahrez:

“I’ve always wanted to play my football in the Premier League and to get the opportunity to do that with the reigning champions was something I simply could not turn down… My friend Riyad Mahrez spoke to me about the Club and about the atmosphere the Leicester fans create at King Power Stadium. I will give absolutely everything I have on the pitch for them and for my team-mates and I hope that together we can achieve something special.”

The History

Slimani’s career began in his homeland at JSM Cheraga, scoring 21 goals in 22 matches in 2008/09, before he joined another Algerian side, CR Belouizdad in May 2009.

Over the next four seasons, Slimani’s development continued at a steady pace, scoring 32 goals in 96 appearances, before securing a move to Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon in August 2013.

He wasn’t a regular starter during the first few months at the club, but, by the end of the 2013/14 season, had forced his way into the starting XI, and ended the campaign with a reasonable eight goals and four assists from 26 league outings.

Slimani entered 2014/15 as the main man in attack for Sporting, and improved his goal output, netting 12 times in 21 league matches, and adding four assists. He also scored twice in six Champions League appearances.

It was only last season when Slimani emerged as a prolific goalscorer, though, scoring 27 goals in 33 league matches, while also totalling six assists.

Slimani made his international debut in a 3-0 win over Niger in May 2012, and has an impressive goal scoring record for his country, netting 23 times in 43 matches, including two goals at the 2014 World Cup.

The Prospects

With the additions of Ahmed Musa and Slimani this summer, Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri looks to have bought players to help ease the burden on Mahrez and Jamie Vardy, who scored a combined 41 of the Foxes 68 goals in the Premier League last season.

While that will undoubtedly help Leicester in their quest to challenge on multiple fronts, the issue from a Fantasy perspective is that we can expect to see plenty of rotation, with Ranieri this season likely to live up to his “Tinkerman” tag.

Given the significant outlay on Slimani, the Algerian will expect to play a prominent role, so it could be that Ranieri looks to operate with 4-4-2 more often this season, partnering Slimani and Vardy up front.

That would appear to make sense on paper at least. Standing at 6ft 2in tall, the Algerian isn’t the quickest and is more of a natural target man who can hold the ball up due to his strength. Crucially, he also possesses the high work-rate required from Ranieri’s charges.

Vardy could play off his strike partner, getting on the end of knock-downs with his electric pace, and making runs in behind the opposition defence.

Shinji Okazaki’s vital contribution to Leicester’s success last season can’t be forgotten, while the increase in central options could see Musa earn more pitch time on the flank at the expense of Marc Albrighton.

Vardy will surely remain the first choice striker, then, but the signing of Slimani could allow Ranieri to manage the England international’s minutes around Champions League matches.

Interestingly, Slimani has been priced at 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 1.4 less than Vardy at 9.9, with Mahrez the other standout option among the Leicester attack available at 9.5.

With so many premium options in good form to start the season, and with Leicester’s fixture list (liv, BUR, mun, SOT, che, CPL, tot) pretty tough over the coming period, it’s unlikely many Fantasy managers will be prioritising a Foxes attacker at this point of the season.

In reality, that schedule, combined with the Champions League campaign getting under way later this month, should hand us the ideal opportunity to get an idea of Ranieri’s favoured tactics and personnel.

At present, there looks to be too much uncertainty surrounding Slimani, with the Algerian also expected to need time to settle into his new surroundings.

Vardy and Mahrez look to remain the key attacking targets at the King Power Stadium, then, with the issue of penalty duties likely to decide which is the superior option. After Mahrez failed to convert from the spot against Swansea last time out, his third miss from his last four penalties, it may be that Vardy takes Leicester’s next spot-kick.

So while Slimani’s arrival will hand Ranieri a different option in attack, the Algeria international may not feature on our radars too prominently during the opening months of his Leicester career.

    I want rid of Deulofeu,Tadic,Llorente & Olsson

My squad currently looks like this

    Heaton
    Bailly Amat Morgan Stones
    Lamela Tadic Ozil Capoue
    Ibra Llorente

    Bench: Foster,Deulofeu,Olsson & Aguero

Is it Worth doing a -4 hit to get rid of one of the following options?

    A)Deulofeu > Josh King
    B)Llorente > Ineanacho

Im down to Antonio va Lamela for next two GW as one of them will end up in Capoue anyway but here it is how it looks niw, g2g?

    Heaton
    Valencia - Baines - Aldeiweireld
    Haz - Ozil - Sterling - Antonio - Bolasie
    Lukaku - Ibra

    Sub Pickford, Amat, Love, Diamonde

After next two GW will go Alder to Stones, Antonio to Capoue and Lukaku to Kun

    Thanks for replies lads

    Heaton | Pickford

    Shaw | Williams | Evans | Souare | 4.5 DEF

    Ozil | Barkley | Januzaj | Antonio | Wilshere

I like having 5 viable MIDs and no 4.5 or Capoue (can't see his form continuing) offer too much, plus Wilshere is playing in the hole by all accounts, so is likely to be involved in many of BOU's attacks.

          • 11 Years

Wilshere has no previous record of being a good fpl player and fitness will be a concern given his injury record!

You're unlikely to need your 5th mid much and not including a cheaper mid has left your first eleven players a lot worse of!

Imo wouldn't you be far better off saving WC and just swap kun for another striker and maybe bring sterling in for example?
Therefore giving yourself the time to assess the new arrivals, bony, benteke etc?? And also the likes of sanchez, ibra on how they are preforming??
Then use your WC to get kun back and bring in one or two of new arrivals and shake up your team with your WC in wk 6/7??
May be a bit risky but could be intelligent move??

Like it is a long season and a lot of ppl jumping on players coz they had one good game ie, ozil, sanchez . And going with new players who haven't kicked a ball yet just coz we have free cash to throw around.?? May lose some ground if they above play well but you have WC and more info to figure it out. .

The key is to assess future potential performances looking at fixtures and form which is why Arsenal now are a better option and Everton fixtures for example. However even Lukaku has said he's not fit yet so he can wait out of my team.

Feel like I have thinking too much about the next two weeks and how to get Aguero back (WC active). So now trying to focus on long term instead. This is what my current team would look like with Aguero back.

    Cech (Pickford)
    Valencia, Jags, Collins (McAuley, Amat)
    Haz, Ozil, Bolasie, 5.5 (Fletcher)
    Aguero, Ibra, Negredo

It's very tempting to ditch Ibra (for a 9.0) to have a better price structure throughout and upgrade Bolasie/5.5 in the midfield and Jags to Baines... I'll ditch Negredo whenever a better option becomes obvious. Like the look of Remy at Palace.

The midfield is poor imo. I'd swap Cech for a cheaper goalkeeper (Heaton?) and upgrade your 5.5. Personally I dont think Ibra is worth the money, especially if he is making you play Negredo, Bolasie and a 5.5 every week.

I think it is a good tactic but I like having the money in attack tbh because it allows more change/fun.

I've been toying with him in my wc, but probably opting for Antonio over Capoue and a 4.5 over Bellerin.

One more issue with the higher value defender of course, is the ability for that player to be outscored by good rotation.

For example - I have Williams, Shaw and Amat and I'm looking at my other options.

I could do Bellerin at 6.5 and a 4.0 (10.5) and play him each week
Or I could do Morgan and Pieters (9.5 combined)

        Bellerin's fixtures: Southampton (H), Hull (A), Chelski (H), Burnley (A), Swansea (H), Middlesborough (H), Sunderland (A).
        The rotation pairing:
        Tottenham (H), Burnley (H), WBA (H) Southampton (H) Sun (H) CPL (H), SWA (H) WBA (H)

With an extra 1.0 over and an extra playing defender

I think Mustafi and Koscielny are better options if you're going there. Both have goal threat and are 0.5m cheaper.

    Hull (A)
    Chelsea (H)

It is bold - what not go for it? At least until Liverpool's fixtures improve and you've worked out their best mid asset.

They both seem extremely good options, so why not have both? It's not like just one of them's going to be getting all the points.

I don't know. I have Sanchez and Ozil, but I'm the kind of crazy that plays this game for fun.

AOA but if Gray is banned Stones (mun) or Amat (CHE)? Both 2pointers max imo. But to get Gray out would be another -4.

Depends on how much you've got for a Gray replacement...I think Stones is a better option of the pair.

Best replacement for Deulofeu £6.9 in the bank

    A) Mirallas
    B) Milner
    C) Lanzini
    D) J. King

Can't mate and it's for a -4 hit too I'm afraid reckon Lanzini is nailed on to start now?

I don't think Lanzini is that nailed. At least not longterm. WIth Antonio's current form, he could start on the left which pushes Payet into the middle and causes Lanzini's drop to the bench.

Mirallas is by far he best pick, but likely just as nailed as Deulofeu. I wouldn't bother replacing if those are the option unless you're 100% sure Mirallas wil start and Deu won't.

Deulofeu is really nailed nowadays to start though is he it's between Mirallas & Lanzini I only three Hames Milner into the acquisition because he's on pens and likes an assist score.

Cool will hang fire on Del Boy what about getting rid of Llorente > Negredo or Ineanacho for the next two GW's ideally I want Tadic,Olsson & Llorente out of the squad after GW 6

Hmm...Most here believe Negredo is a fraud from the fantasy perspective, he's only had a couple of shots in these games and he's scored every one of them, so it's safe to assume he's not going to keep that up. Llorente is a similar pick to him, so it's not that much of an upgrade (ignoring the fixtures). Iheanacho is punty, but I think he's not really nailed (Guardiola could opt for a false 9 tactic) and the fixtures he's potentially going to play aren't as tempting to me...Better to go Benteke/Bony if you have the money.

There really are a few of people on here that think way too highly of themselves at times. This is an open forum for amateurs and 'professionals' to ask whatever they choose. Less patronising and more involvement in the question would help everyone. I've played this for years but still pose dumb questions at times because I just need to know if I'm not over obsessing on certain things. Replying A or B is far easier than witless sniggering.

Abuse away, I felt it needed saying following a couple of over indulgent replies I've read in the last couple of days.

The Reds left-back felt uncomfortable on Saturday morning and so sat out of training, after which it was decided he should go back to United.

A statement on Saturday read: "The left-back was rested from training at St. George's Park this morning with the medical team continuing to manage his workload.

"With Danny Rose set to start against Slovakia in Trnava tomorrow night, Shaw has been allowed to return to Manchester to train with his club as a precautionary measure.
"Sam Allardyce's remaining 22 players all travelled out to Slovakia this afternoon."
Allardyce later confirmed in a press conference that Shaw was not injured and had returned to Manchester "for precautionary measures". The England boss added that Shaw had felt pain in the calf of the leg which he broke last September, but said he expects the defender to be fit for the Manchester derby. "It was a little ache, a muscular ache," explained Allardyce. "Given his long absence through injury we decided to take no chances."

Ozil is the one who benefits most from Giroud it seems

It is said sanchez plays better on the wing but wasn't he starting up front v watford?

No doubt Ozil is helped by Giroud. I just dont understand the contradiction regarding Sanchez. From the eye test, I always find he looks way more involved and threatening when cutting in from the wing

In a way he was listed up front, but in reality Walcott and Sanchez took shifts up front, they were both seen on the wings more.

I think he was best on the right? Feeling seems te be he'll be on the left now? tbh he's still done well there and is a good buy. Have Oz atm as it just makes me defence feel better.

I think it sounds contradictory, but can be explained. Sanchez never actually played up front in practice except for the Leicester and Liverpool games, where he was pretty anonymous, so it's safe to assume he's better on the wing. At the same time his stats negatively impacted by Giroud could be explained by the fact he's had an off season last year, until the last couple of months when Welbeck became first choice striker.

      1. Bubz
        • 12 Years
        9 years, 6 months ago

I see I see. I think it might just be a coincidence tbh. i dont see why Giroud would negatively impact him, if anything Id have thought Giroud would be the perfect type of striker, holding up the ball for Sanchez to run off of. I guess we'll see

        1. Pariße
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 6 months ago

Indeed. The first thing, him being better on the wing is observing derived logic and the second thing could as well be coincidential.

        2. Daaf
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 6 months ago

I also expected them to do better, maybe it was a coincidence but I don't think so. Last year the injuries, the Copa America and a massive loss of form (resulting is lots of blocked shots) made Sanchez very ineffective while Giroud went through that awful run of 18 games without a goal in all competitions. Sanchez was then switched to the right and there he found some form again but I expect him to take up his place at the left wing again now he is back and looking like his usual self again and with Walcott a right winger again. Whether Giroud negatively impacts Sanchez output, yeah i'm fairly certain.

The problem is that Giroud and Alexis almost never combine for goals and assists. Look it up if know how to, it's shocking.

I haven't decided either, they both look good. Last year was easy, but this year not so much. Sanchez feels like the safer option, but that 1.4 could come in handy somewhere else in the team. It's the consistency versus explosiveness debate again. Ozil has corners and indirect free kicks while Sanchez has the odd direct free kick. The more I think about it, the more Ozil becomes the better option. Unless he becomes the assist-the-assister, but he creates so many chances and he will do that all year long.
