We’ve now launched our latest captain poll to canvas your views on the favourites for the armband in Gameweek 4.

You can find the poll in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

This week’s poll looks to be the most difficult to predict so far this season, with previous frontrunner Sergio Aguero starting a three match ban, after being found guilty of violent conduct during Manchester City’s Gameweek 3 home tie with West Ham. Already more than 315,000 Fantasy Premier League managers have jettisoned the Argentine.

In his absence, Arsenal’s resurgent midfield stars look set to take centre stage.

With a 16-point haul away to Watford in Gameweek 3, Alexis Sanchez (11.0) certainly has the form and has already been drafted in ahead of Gameweek 4 by more than 122,000 FPL managers, to take his ownership to 11.1%.

Aguero’s ban has surely played a part in his growing popularity, with funds from the attack being redistributed into midfield and heading in the Chilean’s direction. The home tie against Southampton also gives Sanchez an ideal fixture for his new owners to offer him the armband.

Mesut Ozil (9.5) is another midfield Gunner edging back to former glories.

His goal against Watford has boosted his ownership by more than 67,000 so far during the international break, making him another strong captaincy option. Again, the Aguero funds will be a factor here, with thousands turning to the German as a cheaper alternative to the Sanchez option.

Arguably, Manchester City’s trip to Old Trafford for Saturday’s early kick-off may have seen Aguero slip down the captaincy pecking order regardless of his availability.

This testing fixture is certain to dent the prospects of United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.8), another popular pick over the previous three Gameweeks and owned by 58.7% of FPL managers. Nevertheless, with City failing to keep a Premier League clean sheet so far this season and the big Swede scoring twice in his previous home clash, he could still be savvy selection.

Wayne Rooney (9.0), is another candidate for those who see goals in Manchester, particularly as The Red Devils’ captain’s tally of 11 goals is a derby record.

Chelsea players are likely to be popular armband options when they travel to Swansea City.

With a goal and 11 FPL points in Gameweek 3, Eden Hazard (10.2) cemented his place as the most reliable source of midfield points so far this season. Considering he has delivered attacking returns over all three of his Premier League matches this term it is little wonder that his FPL ownership has surged by more than 183,000 over the international break. Now found in over 30.4% of squads, he is the second highest owned midfielder in FPL behind Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho (30.7%).

Diego Costa, who has scored five times against the Swans in the last two seasons and has been recruited by more than 131,000 new FPL managers ahead of Gameweek 4, is another strong captaincy pick. But be warned, the FPL bonus point system is not a fan. Despite delivering attacking returns on all three Premier League games this season the 9.7 priced striker has yet to register bonus point rewards.

This could certainly be a Gameweek to consider a differential option. Fortunately, recent transfer activity has presented us with a couple of prime candidates, with two prolific Premier League strikers looking to impress at new clubs.

Christian Benteke (7.4), who has signed for Crystal Palace, has 51 goals over four Premier League seasons, at Aston Villa and Liverpool. With an away trip to Middlesbrough the 3.7% owned forward could be about to reward his 25,000 new FPL owners.

Wilfried Bony (7.3), meanwhile, has swapped Manchester City’s bench for a likely starting role on loan at Stoke, and represents an intriguing differential armband selection at home against a lacklustre Spurs side. Over his three Premier League campaigns the 1.1% owned striker has scored 32 times.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week, as we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering our view of the results and the statistics behind crop of contenders.

Smart or stupid to have both Sanchez and Ozil in my WC-team and decide who to drop in gw6 when Aguero is back?

With Arsenal's fixture of Soton and Hull is tempting to keep both.

Caz, Sanchez and Ozil! 🙂 That's also an alternative, but that's too risky I guess. Like the downgrade to Mane in gw6 - Liverpool's fixture is getting better!

Yes, I know the fixture is getting even better, but If I want to bring in Aguero in gw6 I have to drop Ozil, Sanchez, Hazard or Ibra and then my gut tells me that two Arsenal-playera are too much.

Short term perhaps Defoe or even Rondon. Long term I think Bony is fine. (I don't think I will get any of them right now). I am going without Ibra so far, but i don't think i will go without Aguero when he's back. I still don't know who I am getting instead of Aguero first. Might be Kane or Benteke. Right now I have Aguero, Gray, Lukaku.

For those wildcarding - what's the Aguero plan? Is it simply a case of Sanchez or Ibra will leave your team to make way? Money ITB for that or hits?

I dont have a plan, I don't really see the point in having one. No way of knowing who you will or wont want to keep in 3 weeks time. People saying they'll do Ibra to Aguero, well what if Ibra scores 3 goals in his next 2 matches? What if all your mids are performing and you can't downgrade any of them? Go with the flow I say, I'll cross the bridge when I come to it

      1. ANON.
        • 12 Years

Can have an idea of what you might do, doesn't mean you have to stick with it. If you keep cash in the bank for Aguero it will be easier get him anyway, even if its not Ibra that you lose

        1. Bubz
          • 12 Years
          9 years, 6 months ago

Cash in the bank is obviously the best plan if you're going to have one. But in my opinion the point of wildcarding is to exploit Aguero being out and using those funds to buy bigger hitters elsewhere and make up points in that time. I dont want to leave cash in the bank

The value of that extra 1.5m for 2 weeks though is quite small. It could force you to take a hit to get Aguero back

I have a plan for both:

        1) if Ibra in form:
        Sanchez -> Pucheon
        Defoe/Zaza -> Aguero

        2) if Sanchez in form:
Ozil (I have both Sanchez and Ozil) -> Firmino
        Ibra -> Aguero

    4. JÆKS ⭐
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 6 months ago

No point in making a plan now, it all depends on form. Lukaku + Ibra to Bony + Aguero is one that looks good on paper but can't tell if that is the one I'm going with, if Lukaku is on form for example. Just make sure you have a few 'Aguero routes', and decide then which one to go with.

    - Should be a nailed starter

Yeah, that's what has me on A right now. Both Walker and Cech should get a few clean sheets in the coming weeks, Walker offers much more going forward, obviously, but is also likely to be rested near CL games. If I knew which Spuds keeper would start out of Lopez and Vorm, I'd take them instead.

The consensus seems clear on this one for you. I just don't like spending on keepers so Cech wasn't an option.

Already have Williams and Valencia. Arsenal and Spuds both look good for clean sheets over next 5-6 weeks at least.

Then it feels like you got too much cash on defenders. How tight is the Spurs match fixtures. Aren't there lots of Europa and cups games jammed in there? Walker to be rested for some matches right?

Yeah, I'm waiting until I hear about Lloris now, he is 0.1 cheaper and if he is fit, as he claims he will be, for GW4 then I will take him over Cech. Im happy with this structure:
            (5.5, 4.0 - 5.5, 5.0, 4.5, 4.5, 4.0) - That's 33m in total on 7 players, leaving ~67m+ for the other 8.

I don't like rotating keepers, always seems to lose me points. Picking the fixtures hasn't worked for me last season or this.

    This is my WC team

    Fletcher, Sanchez, Haz, Antonio, Sterling
    Benteke, Negredo, Ibra

    Any good?

How does this WC team look?

    Foster (Pickford)
    Valencia - Williams - Friend / Pieters / Amat
Hazard - Sanchez - Lamela - Sterling (Capoue)
    Bony - Ibrahimovic - Lukaku

Can afford it if Friend and Pieters drop to 4.4, and any one of McAuley, Holgate, Costa, Negredo rise again.

Otherwise Foster > Heaton for 0.1, or Capoue to any 4.5 for 0.1 if I'm short.

    Bump
    WC thoughts?

    Current:
    De Gea - Nordfeldt
    Walker - Shaw - Azpili - Morgan - Paredes
    Hazard - Lallana - Højbjerg - Redmond - Barkley
    Aguero - Costa - Llorente

Want to go like this with WC:
    Foster - Adrian
Walker (keep) - Collins - Valencia - Baines - McAuley
Hazard (keep) - Redmond (keep) - Antonio - Lamela - Capoue
Ibra - Costa (keep) - Rondon

This way I'll have money ITB to change in Aguero if I want to when he returns

Thoughts? Options I've missed? Sanchez, Ozil?

True that, and he could yet prove value in the long term if teams stick with him, not for me though. I just thought that Hazard would have surely surpassed him by now that's all.
