He’s gone. Aguero has been shown the door, at least by myself, Jonty and Andy.

But Granville had to be different.

The revitalised ScoutCast shock-jockey simply had to go against the grain and choose to bench the Argentine.

He’s also refusing to play his Wildcard, challenging us to persuade him over the course of this episode.

Do we succeed in tipping him over the edge? You’ll have to listen in and find out.

In doing so, you’ll hear the four of us address a barrage of Wildcard fuelled questions from you, the Community, as we tackle subjects such as the Arsenal midfield conundrum, Payet vs Antonio and survey the options when it comes to cheap enablers.

Mostly gutas Arsenal have tighthened up defensively since the pool game. But even looking at stats, West ham have been the second worse for shots conceded in the box.

    Kun replacement:

    A) Lukaku (sun, MID)
    B) Costa (swa, LIV)
    C) Kane (sto, SUN)
    D) Giroud (SOU, hul)

Call me crazy but I will probably opt for C and D.

This is partly because I have Hazard and Bolasie and no Spurs or Arsenal.

Kane would probably be the safer choice due to playing time and penalties...

*A wooden flute doth announce a draft league commencing during the 2nd international break*

    * 6 places (from 60) left *

    *NOT an FPL thing*

The draft is a "slow draft" on Fantrax. There are 9 hours on the draft clock per pick. The idea is not for people to use the whole clock but to allow for global participation and allow people to sleep and work without stressing about being in the draft room every waking minute. It takes about 10 days during the 2nd international break, starts October 2.

11 players are drafted by each team. You start 7 players with a bench of 4 each week.
    1 GK
    2 to 4 defenders
    1 to 3 mids
    0 to 2 strikers

You have to stay on top of "free agent" players and make claims and drops (of current players) to keep your squad fresh, deal with injuries, etc.

You also can trade players with other managers in the league.

It is a 20 team division. Top 3 or more teams are promoted to division 2 (as we have some drop outs from the upper divisions, more managers from division 3 get promoted).

Some people like the draft format and some hate it.

A primary rule of the league is that your team name needs to be injury related to go with the league name theme (Knocks & Niggles) and then put your FFS name in parentheses so folks know who you are. So examples are:
    Balotelli's Grass Allergy (Milanista)
    Injured For Eva (Balders)
    No Return Date (HeelsOverHead)
    Strained Groins (Pundit of Punts)
    Torn ACL (TM245)

If you're interested, there are openings in our 3rd division. Each division is 20 teams and there are promotions/relegations.

Which one of Liverpool minefield midfield:
    1. Mane explosive but 8.9 seems too high.
    2. Firmino - doesn't look in form. Price wise 8.4 looks good
    3. Coutinho- on set pieces, 8.2 seems a good steal but plays deep and injury prone.

Leaning towards Mane as he got the pace and to do a lot in front of the goal.
Thoughts on the same. 10 votes to decide

Benteke & Bony are over priced by 0.5m-1m.

    There I've said it.

Everyone is banging on about either one being capable of scoring +/-15 goals. Of course they are. Both have in the past. But they are still playing for mediocre low scoring teams in Stoke and CP.

    It's points that matter.

When Tekkers scored 19 goals in 2818 min's for Villa he ended up on 166 pts. When Bony scored 17 goals in 27 games for Swansea he scored 158 pts. Nothing to write home about.

Compared that to Bellerin @6.5m scoring 172pts last season and Toby @ 6.5m scoring 166 pts for Spurs. Azpi @ 6m flying under radar.

Then we get to Baines @ 5.5m who is possibly on setpieces and under new manager Koeman who could easily hit 150pts this season. Even Dann @ 5.5m with his goal threat is overlooked.

I'm not mentioning Shaw, Williams & Valencia as most own at least 2 of these.

It's really an awkward price for both Tekkers and Bony, but I guess it's due to them being at Liverpool & City when FPL launched.

I'm not really pushing a switch in formation, just thinking that the 6.5m turd striker range is where the value might be while TV's are still low. Gray(hopefully he drops when banned), Wilson, Deeney(if he drops further), even Long if he gets into the starting line up again?

On top of that Dann, Toby, Valencia, Baines & Bellerin are at the top of the stats for creativity and goal threat for defenders...and we all know those teams aren't worse then previous years. They are better with new managers in case of Koeman, Conte and Mourinho. 15CS min for them.

Only way I can afford Tekkers or Bony is if I lose firmino and play 2 x 5.5m midf's and I'm not comfortable with that.

What about if this does signal the time to switch formation, surely there will be more value in those defenders, especially if they hit 150-170 points at 5.5m while we're all trying to squeeze in the likes of Puncheon etc. The defenders are far more nailed too.

I appreciate the argument that it's all about picking the form mids/fwds and catching their runs. But we're talking about high-scoring players for relatively low prices in big sides (maybe Dann aside).

If the choice was between owning Baines/Valencia, even PVA, and someone like Leroy Fer then surely we'd all jump on the premium defender right?

Add to this the fact that it is almost certain that price rises have been shortened this season, and there are possibilities of Koeman, Moyes etc playing 3-5-2.

Could this be the season to change formation?

Great analysis, I too think there's a greater perception that a striker is doing well if he scores every other week but this could still be only 4ppg. Very tempting to just play 2 up front as can't see anybody other than premium options breaking the 170 Mark which you'd hope for from a front 8 starter

I think their price reflects their value to the team they started the season at, they were basically 3rd choice strikers. I wouldn't say they are overpriced though.. If Bony or Benteke were at their respective clubs last season and scored around 10-15 goals each, i think 7.5mil would be a very reasonable price for them this season considering they are proven PL goalscorers. Zaza came in at 7 also

Don't get the name of this hot topic but here's my two cents anyway:

You are assuming that once you get these strikers you own them for the rest of the season when the reality is that we transfer them out when form/fixtures turn for the worse.

An in-form Benteke/Bony with great fixtures is easily worth their price as long as they deliver.

Yeah, if you catch them in their purple patch then great.

I'm just weary of picking a CP/Stoke striker over say Bellerin, when Bellerin has burn/SWANS/MID/sun/SPURS/manu/BOURNE

Generally yes, but it's just not any CP/Stoke striker, it's two proven PL goalscorers.

I'm trying to point out that I'm not so sure that owning one of these 7.5m forward is worth owning over say a 6.5m forward if it means not getting say Baines over a 4.5m def.

This is something that I have been battling with all W/C. Currently have Benteke and a 4.5 defender, and don't feel comfortable about it. I too have one eye on an Arsenal defender. Kosc in particular. I think he and say Barrow may offer better points return than tekkers and say Kone. I see lots of 6 pointers (hopefully more) for an arsenal defender in the next 10, not sure if I can say the same for Bentekke.

Trouble is, Barrow could just be a 2pt, he could get assists, if someone converted his crosses. He's possibly better seen as a good value mid at 5m, an enabler to have a strong 4 mids, Haz, San, Ster, and Ant. But he, Barrow, offers not movement in that price bracket. And there lies the conundrum for me.

I kindly disagree - I think both of them represent better value than say Costa and Lukaku (if you don't plan on Captaining Costa or Lukaku).

I don't think that Benteke and Bony are bargains by all means - I just think that the price is right.

I'd be happy with them if they get 160 pts for ~ 7.5M - wouldn't you?

I also think that the argument should be - are some of the defenders underpriced? I don't see you comparing them to attackers - you're comparing them to defenders and rightly so - some of those guys you mentioned are screaming good value.

I disagree, I mean after all aguero ONLY scored 184 last season with 24 goals and 156 points in 13/14 with 17 goals and 11 assists. I think it's having these players at the right time when they are on form and firing. I personally think benteke will be great value and will get more points whilst injury free than every single other forward option priced lower than him in fpl. I'm personally buying him. I think bony will come good but may take a lot longer to get into his stride but there will be a time they are both worth owning this season.

      1. Christina.

Yes, their purple patches are vital. Kun didn't score enough pts since he was injured. It's his problem, but he is a must due to being explosive and therefore (c) material. Tekkers and Bony ain't (c) material.

Tekkers will prob outscore all the cheaper strikers yes, but by more than someone like Baines will outscore say a 4.5m def?

        Not so sure.

Season long scores don't matter for most strikers. You transfer them more and if you time it right you can get 20% of their points in 10% of the time.

That said I think WCing in players before any sign of form is stupid.

You cannot compare prices of defenders to prices of forwards. The more relevant statistic is the difference-in-difference estimate. This means you need to compare the price differential for Benteke versus next best alternative forward to the price differential of Bellerin to the next best alternative defender.

      In other words, Benteke + 4.5m defender > Bellerin + 5.5m attacker.

Yes, I know that was what I was implying(and mulling over when playing around with my GW 6 WC) I should have mentioned it in my original post.

I've seen many WC's on here with the Kun cash spread around on the likes of Tekkers/Bony etc. Some even both! The pooh will hit the fan once the premium defenders hit form and Kun becomes a week in week out (c).

I would yes. He's just about borderline for me. It's as if Tekkers/Bony is just that 0.5m to expensive.

Deeny soon could be added to that list. I like your thinking Chris and I'm a fan of that methodology in the past, I may have lost my way tho!
Somewhere between Über and The Light Knight (big 5 at the back) is the key, so many 9 pointers available from premium defs these days.

Wilson(6.4) & Deeney(6.9) both on my radar. Nice fixtures, penalties and if we are lucky falling by another 0.1m soon.

You make an interesting point, but I think you're comparing apples and oranges here. The pricing scales are different for each position, much more narrow for defenders and wide for forwards. Let me make the opposite case here, that they're actually underpriced.

In their best seasons, Benteke and Bony played for Villa and Swansea, so I think it's fair to say that in both cases they are playing for more talented teams this time around. The more accurate measure in my view is points per 90 minutes, which were:

      Bony 13/14: 5.75 points/90
      Benteke 12/13: 5.3 points/90

To put in perspective, that's comparable to Kane (5.64 p/90) and Giroud (5.78 p/90) last season, whereas Vardy (6.06 p/90) would be slightly better. So the question is not whether a 6.5m defender will do better than these 7.5m strikers, it is how much benefit you can get by using the 1.5-2.5m saved to upgrade elsewhere.

To give you an example, look at the p/90 of several 7.5m midfielders last season:
      Barkley - 4.62; Willian - 4.43; Sigurdsson - 4.88, Ayew - 5.25,

and compare it to the output of premium midfielders:
      Ozil - 5.92; Payet - 5.98; Mane - 5.54

So my conclusion is that if B&B replicate their glory days, and that is a very big if, there's actually tremendous value there.

P.S. I think they are actually priced lower because of low-gametime expectations. In their FPL info pages you can only see their prices at the end of the season, but I remember that Bony was priced at 8.5m in the season where he moved to City.

People talking about total points for the season in these conversations is so irrelevant. Point is we all know they are capable of stringing a few goals together and scoring braces and I daresay hattricks too. Point is getting them for when they do. We're not talking about season keepers here. Both are an absolute snip at 7.something

I've always wondered how FPL prices their players. I feel a lot of player values this season are inflated because of the Leicester effect last season when we could pick up the likes of Mahrez and Vardy for cheap.

At the end of the day we all compete with the same set of prices.

Last year I presume was something of an anomaly with the low prices of both Mahrez and Vardy basically allowing everyone to have all of the best players - there wasn't as much differential.

It's better that we all struggle to fill a team with performing players and that we have to look across the spectrum of premium, mid-priced and budget options to find the best value everywhere.

If it were easy to do, it wouldn't be much of a game now would it?

posted last night... Maybe some are too keen on City mids?

Sane and Gundogen are back from injury

After the Derby, which has a high probability of being low scoring, we play in the Champions League.

Pep will want to give minutes to Sane and Gundogen and the CL and more so BOU at home is a great opportunity to do that

Pep also likes to rotate and KdB can be moved into a more advanced role to replace Sterling or Nolito with Gundogen Playing CM alongside Silva

Sane could replace Sterling/Nolito and whilst I don't think iheanacho will start on Saturday there is a good chance he could do v BOU....then Sergio is back

For me there is too much risk and the cash spent on Sterling or Nolito will soon be wanted to get Kun back in your team

So my WC comes down to who will get the most points over the medium term (irrespective of price) of:
    1. Firmino - oop, Liverpool will score, but will they share it around
    2. Sterling - will score lots when plays, but will probably be rotated
    3. Barkley - koeman should improve on last year's performance, but is less attacking than others
4.Antonio - impressive points per game, I think could rival payet, but will he be rotated?
    5. Bony - If he has any form should score 10-15 a season, but unproven
    6. Defoe - will score but Sunderland look relegation bound so can't see exploding - a solid reliable pick
    7. Benteke - again if has any form should score 10-15 a season, but as a Newcastle fan have little faith in parcel turning around a rut

Can pick more or less any 4...

    How would you order them?

Thinking about doing Ramirez ---> Lanzini (-4)

What worries me about Ramirez is that I've looked at a few predicted line ups and he isn't in a few of them. He played in both internationals for Uru and he still hasn't played 90 minutes in a game for MID. Wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't start this weekend.

Lanzini in the other hand has great fixtures and is nailed, playing at 10 (apparently)

I also own Gray and he is 100% leaving my team next week, due to his impending ban and poor fixtures. Meaning if I do keep Ramirez this week, I will probably also keep him next week.

With all that in mind is it worth doing?

      Zaza & Williams

Payet and Lanzini will be back so he should have a good amount on chances. Palace are still iffy atm.
Williams to take advantage of their decent fixtures

Rooney points in each game yet only 6 % ownership. Really hoping he outscores Ibra in the derby

He well might, Ibra isn't a big game player

Same here. The likelihood of that happening isn't that high but Rooney's put in some pretty good performances in this fixture. So I hope that will work out in our favour. 😉

      A. I think Soton will suit playing away from home. Also Williams is a BP magnet

    Which option?

    A) Baines and Lukaku
    B) Williams and Costa

      A. Costa is a nightmare to own. Don't think you need to go full baines though so maybe Williams and Lukaku and upgrade elsewhere?
