Next up this Friday it’s time for our pre-Gameweek members article, offering insight on the armband conundrum for the upcoming round of fixtures.

We’ll take a look at the main contenders in this week’s Captain Poll, analyse the Opta numbers and check up on the Rate My Team ratings before offering up a couple of differential options in light of the data analysis.

The Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero dominates the Gameweek 6 Captain Poll after serving out a three-match suspension against Swansea in the EFL Cup on Wednesday evening.

With nine goals in five appearances in all competitions under Pep Guardiola, there’s no surprise to see the City striker emerge as favourite for the armband, with over 48% of the votes cast so far ahead of his visit to the Liberty.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku have battled it out for runners-up spot all week, with the United man just edging it by 10% to 8%.

Expected to return to full training today after a minor toe injury, Lukaku racked up 29 points in Aguero’s two-Gameweek absence and travels to a Bournemouth outfit that have managed a single clean sheet so far.

Ibrahimovic faces a tougher task, though, as United welcome champions Leicester to Old Trafford. The big Swede has netted three times in two home appearances, whilst Claudio Ranieri’s men have lost both their away matches so far.

Liverpool’s home encounter with Hull brings Roberto Firmino (6%), Sadio Mane (3%) and Philippe Coutinho (2%) into contention as major differentials. Jurgen Klopp’s side are in devastating form in the final third and will fancy their chances against a defence that’s just shipped four at home to Arsenal.

Kevin De Bruyne has racked up returns in four successive Gameweeks and offers an in-form City alternative for those who are brave enough to overlook Aguero.

Rested for the midweek cup win over Swansea, Raheem Sterling has just 1% of the votes as he looks to serve up a third double-figure haul in four.

Etienne Capoue has also been selected by 1% for Watford’s trip to Burnley on Monday evening. The Frenchman has risen to the top of the Fantasy Premier League player standings on the back of some fixture-proof performances that have seen him score against Southampton, Chelsea, West Ham and Man United in the first five Gameweeks.

Dimitri Payet (four assists in the last two) and five-goal Michail Antonio also continue to remain under the radar as West Ham entertain a Southampton side that have lost both their roads trips so far.

Worth taking a hit to replace Gray with Charlie Austin? Otherwise I'll have to play Lamela but he may not even start for Spurs or play Gareth McAuley and double up on WBA defence.

Whos your bench option? Will Gray drop in value before gw ends? Could be best to wait another week if your bench option is ok. A hit for Austin now is not tempting for me

So, after weeks of tinkering I have come up with this:
    Jaku-Pick
    Williams-Evans-Holebas-Amat
    Fimino-Snoddy
    Ibra-Kun

This is the players I will have, but as you can see I need 5 more.
I want 1.Sanchez 2.Lukaku 3.double up Liverpool midfield. BUT, I can just afford two of these three picks.

If I go 1 I will get Sanchez-Pereyra-Lukaku-Adam Smith-Fletch (5th mid). This gives me great midfield/attack but a weak defense.

2 gives me Sanchez-Antonio-Deeney-Koscielny-Carrick(5th mid). Downgrade on attack but stronger defence.

And last, 3 would give me Mane-Firmino-Antonio-Capoue-Lukaku-Lovren. Strong team overall but not Sanchez.

So now, I really need your help. This is my final WC decision and all thoughts are welcomed. What combination to go with?

    Cheers

    1. MTPockets
      9 years, 9 months ago

Cheap 5th isn't my preference, but 1 or 2 include sanchez who I think you'll want so may as well get now as don't know what other transfer may need for next gw.

Of the two, I'd go with 1. Antonio has potential but also potential to back defending. That's made up for Pereyra who could be great differential vs Deeney, and hopefully Lukaku (although I've gone for costa due to uncertainty).

FFF has Deeney projected to rise tomorrow, so you may want 0.2 itb if you feel you need a contingency plan for Rashford > Deeney. Ofc, you could downgrade Rash to Austin or another less expensive forward.

I'd play Redmond. Goals notwithstanding, his attacking stats are better than Capoue's.

I question why the FA feels the need to ban Gray for 4 matches over homophobic tweets made 4 years ago.

Whilst I and many will consider the comments disgusting, people have a right to their opinions. The comments do not relate to homosexuals within football whatsoever, were not made via a platform provided by Gray's status as a professional sportsman or directed toward an audience of sports fans. The comments are made as a private individual.
I would speculate that he had a low number of followers in his non-league days so his comments were likely received by and meant for friends and associates rather than the public in general.
It has nothing to do with the FA, no crime was committed, only his club - whom Gray represents - are in a position to reprimand him. Which they have not done - nor have any of his clubs since the comments were made.
Furthermore, the FA may have chose to investigate 4 years ago but clearly they permit homophobic opinions to be expressed publicly by a player when he isn't a premier league player since they have waited till now.

Non-Gray owner, just feel like freedom of speech is important.

It's debatable on many grounds, but I don't think I'd agree that his comments were made as a private individual. Once you tweet or facebook or put anything on the web, it is in the public domain. If you belong to an organization, or subsequently belong to an organization, and sign a contract that includes terms, moral clauses, etc., I think you can legitimately be held accountable for current and past behavior that has an impact on the organization's reputation.

      Freedom of hatespeech more like.

How can you say the comments don't relate to homosexuals within football whatsoever? They were aimed at all homosexuals so by definition they were aimed at homosexuals in football. Put yourself in their shoes. An example had to be made of him.

Also, there were racist comments from 2 years ago

Freedom of speech doesn't mean you're immune to criticism/sanction if you say something stupid 😉
