Sergio Aguero may have saved my season.

I genuinely think that, had he not flung his arm in the direction of Winston Reid’s chops, my squad would be on a very different path to the one it now occupies.

Looking back at my Gameweek 3 line-up, aside from the obvious clanger in backing Riyad Mahrez, it’s difficult to see where I was going wrong. Sitting outside of the top million managers having just ranked 2.9 million in the world, I was pretty much clueless on how I would transform my fortunes.

Aguero’s indiscretion changed that. His suspension pushed me into playing an early Wildcard and, from that point on, it appears to have turned for me.

The timing could hardly have been better. Three Gameweeks provided just enough data to go on.

Everton and Arsenal had ridiculously strong fixtures and Manchester City had already revealed themselves as a seemingly unstoppable attacking force.

These factors appeared to signpost moves for Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Raheem Sterling – they all presented convincing arguments and Aguero’s ban offered the means and the courage to seal the deal.

In hindsight, this now seems obvious.

Jonty’s dig at my template midfield in this week’s ScoutCast resonated so much because it’s easy, three weeks on, to arrive at the conclusion that the targets are clear.

The fact that Sterling has increased in price by 0.5, Sanchez 0.3 and Lukaku 0.4, all since arriving in my squad, indicates that it perhaps wasn’t quite so obvious to all ahead of Gameweek 4.

But without that one event – without Aguero’s ill-timed elbow, I doubt I would have moved for any of that trio.

My rank now simmers around the 100k mark; my squad value has increased by 2.2 in the space of just three and a bit Gameweeks.

None of that would have happened without Aguero getting his ban.

I can take some credit for the decisions but judgement on transfers isn’t my biggest issue as a Fantasy manager – we are all capable of making good decisions.

My key flaw has always been my lack of conviction when it comes to backing myself. That’s where the Aguero suspension came in.

It was a convenient twist in the season that played into my hands and one which I was able to exploit. That much was pure luck.

Now I have to maintain momentum. My recent decisions to ship Zlatan Ibrahimovic and now Michail Antonio, reflect a new approach.

I’ve got to take inspiration from the Gameweek 4 Wildcard.

All too often in previous seasons, I find myself backtracking and retreating, only really making a big decision when an injury or suspension makes it feel safe.

Now I have to urge myself to back brave transfer moves without having an event like Aguero’s ban to make it easy.

It could all go badly wrong. I’m losing decent players, explosive assets.

But I have to hope that I win more often than I lose. At least it feels like I’m genuinely playing the game rather than being passive and letting things pan out. I’m on a new path and, while it’s going well, it feels right.

Come back to me on Sunday night after Zlatan and Antonio have spanked me and I will doubtless feel very different.

One way or another, it’s all going to trace back to Aguero – the point of his elbow providing a fortunate catalyst.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    The explosive/inconsistent myth.

I've noticed this tag gets stuck to some players and then seems hard to shake. Mane for instance is still getting called inconsistent, despite ticking along at a goal every other game this season. He is Mr consistent in Liverpool's midfield so far.

    1. Sánchez
      10 years, 26 days ago

        1. Sánchez
          10 years, 26 days ago

I'm not saying he is inconsistent. Though his Liverpool form right now actually may back up the theory. He's on a form run currently. It may be in 2 months he has a run of blanks. Consistency is over more than 6 weeks really

          1. OZIL-TEEN
            10 years, 26 days ago

I wonder how many games it will take him to lose the tag. don't personally see him as on form yet. I am expecting bigger returns. Not to make him explosive, just a great Fpl pick

coutinho will get the most points per minute - but is most likely to be dropped/rotated/subbed
firmino will play the most but is very selfless
lallana is attacking from deep but his position will suffer against bigger, higher pressing teams
      mane is explosive

if they were all the same price I'd be on Mane

for value, it's hard to look past lallana for this fixture run... I think Firmino will do better against the bigger teams

Having watched them alot this season, I'd go with Coutinho.

He has looked consistently dangerous and is getting into better attacking areas than he has previously, aided by Firmino dropping deeper. He is not the Coutinho of the last few seasons.

Perhaps a better question, given their form and fixtures, is which are the two best value Liverpool midfielders?

If price was irrelevant I'd do with Mane and Coutinho (I'm on that at the moment). But as it is, Lallana and Coutinho makes sense.

            Kun Lukaku Deeney

            Sub: Pickford Capoue Evans Amat

            2FT, 2.6ITB

They're all good picks in their own right, but you have 2.6m ITB. you need to decide who you can't rely on and where the extra money is better spent.

For instance, you could do Kone > Bellerin assuming you're happy with your midfield for 2 to 3 weeks.

I'm looking at Walcott and Lallana as alternatives for Antonio if West Ham don't improve.

My defenders have terrible fixtures next week. Damn!
    Valencia [Liv(A)], Williams [City(A)], Evans [Tot(H)], Collins[Cry(A)], Amat[Ars(A)]
I have no wildcard, AOA and have only 1 FT.
Mid : Capoue Antonio Firmino Sanchez Sterling
    Forwards : Lukaku Deeney Aguero
I guess I have no option other than taking a -8 hit. Evans, Valencia have terrible fixtures and Collins isn't playing now.Which option is better?
    A. Antonio Valencia Collins -> Snodgrass Bellerin Shawcross/Smith
    B. Valencia Evans Collins -> Clyne Smith Robertson
    Thanks in advance guys!

Lukaku and Collins for Austin and Bellerin

      you can thank me later

Valancia and Evans are fine for next week. West Brom can keep a clean sheet against anyone, especially the bigger teams who they love to frustrate. Valancia is too attacking to drop and is still in form.

See if Collins plays to today. If he does I'd just play those three and save. There are few things more frustrating in the game then taking hits for defenders with poor fixtures... you're setting yourself up for a fall. Do it only if you want the new players for the next 6-8 games.

Also good. Yes. That. Just don't take a minus 8 just because two very good defenders have poor fixtures.

Bellerin seems like a must right now to me and is worth taking a hit. He attacks a lot and has good chances of CS because of easy fixtures. May get some bonus points as well.

If Arsenal don't score many then he's in with a good shout for bonus. He always has a chance for an assist too, but 6.5m is a lot.

I have Koscielny so perhaps that's why I don't feel the urgency. Even the 0.5m saved might turn KdB into Sanchez or Antonio into Walcott. The prices are very tight this year.

No doubt about it though, Bellerin is exciting to own.

I'd take a Firmino blank for a Zlatan brace.

I really don't get this "Lukaku is essential" talk.

    - When Everton play as poorly as they have done against bou and CPL, there are better options than Kaku.

    - However, if Everton improve their attack and creates more chances Kaku will be dangerous to go without.

He's not that expensive, looks to be on pens, is in a purplish patch, and could have had two or three yesterday (the ball Bolasie floated in the box that he just missed with his head, and the step over left footed shot that drilled Mandanda). What's not to like?

    Antonio -> Sanchez
    De Roon -> Walcott/Lallana

Early days but how does this look for a -4?

I'm planning something very similar. In fact identical with Lallana.
Fancy going 352 for a little while.
I'm slightly worried about another Sanchez post int rest but I think Ars have a handier CL fixture next

    Good afternoon lads!

I was wondering if Ighalo is going to actually get dropped today? I saw many fans calling for him to get benched & the problem is I brought him in for a FT this week for Benteke -_-

      "Casual" picks?

Have a look at Lukaku points last four game weeks.

More like a very shrewd pick.

      Jealousy is a bad trait!

    7. stachman

You should consider yourself a lucky non-casual, cause it was really close for both of them to score more...

Bony has great fixtures. Slim chance he might be dropped for Crouch for a fixture like todays (away at Man U) just due to style of play, but I wouldn't get rid.
