We take our final look back at Gameweek 7, recognising the hap-hazard achievements of Arsenal’s goalscoring defender, acknowledging the tempting resilience of the Spurs backline while pondering if it’s time to re-align our squad spending.

The Player

Some would say that Laurent Koscielny was fortunate to have been credited with Arsenal’s winner on Sunday.

A clumsy cack-handed finish saw the Frenchman bundle Theo Walcott’s flick into the Burnley net, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain appearing to wade in by kicking Koscielny’s calf.
A farcical but vital goal.

Arsenal claimed the points with Koscielny awarded the maximum Fantasy Premier League bonus points. It was enough to ensure that the Gunners’ man is the first defender to figure as a Gameweek leading scorer with 15-points.

As a result, he’s also one of the first defenders to sustain a transfer bandwagon of any real significance.

Ranking sixth in the “transfers in” column heading into Gameweek 8, Koscielny has risen to 6.2 in value as FPL managers begin to switch their sights to consider big-ticket defenders.

Arsene Wenger’s rearguard has demonstrated extra steel, with the introduction of Shkodran Mustafi cited as a key factor.

While the German has gained plaudits, it’s Koscielny that’s attracting the FPL attention courtesy of his two goals – already putting him halfway to his best Premier League goalscoring tally achieved last season.

The top scoring FPL defender, Koscielny’s 11% ownership is closing the gap on team-mate Hector Bellerin – the Spaniard still retained by 25.6% of FPL managers.

The fixture list suggests there is more to come from both.

With Swansea City, Middlesbrough and Sunderland looming, Koscielny and the Arsenal defence will be expected to boast further returns before bracing for stiffening fixtures with Manchester United and Spurs.

The Team

Across North London, Spurs have made a statement.

Their victory over a previously perfect Manchester City has suddenly thrown things open. It’s paved the way for Mauricio Pochettino’s men to promote their title challenging credentials while leaving the door ajar for Arsenal and Liverpool to close the gap.

Spurs proved City’s vulnerabilities – exposing their questionable defending and the fact that Kevin De Bruyne is an almost irreparable component of their midfield.

But this is not about City – Spurs clearly have plenty to offer us.

Heung-min Son’s form has already been highlighted on these pages – his newfound spark has attracted thousands of new investors, hungry to pounce on the latest mid-price talent.

We’ve also acknowledged the performances of Dele Alli – seemingly re-energised by Son’s recent displays. He’ll continue to play second fiddle to the South Korean for now, but could be a factor on Harry Kane’s return, with Pochettino perhaps shuffling his attacking setup.

But it’s the Spurs defence providing the new temptation.

Just as Koscielny’s haul ensured his popped his head above the parapet, the Spurs defence clocked up his fourth clean sheet in seven on Sunday to earn further investment.

Kyle Walker continues to be the headline act. Now found in 35% of FPL squads, his price rise and ownership is beginning to bring new options into the equation.

Danny Rose tops the Spurs ranks with 6.5 points per game following Sunday’s assist and yet has been claimed by just 5.3% of FPL managers.

Jan Vertonghen is earning attention by virtue of his 5.6 price tag, with the 6.5 Toby Alderweireld gradually shedding owners, presumably to Walker amongst others, in every Gameweek thus far.

But the Belgian is arguably the class act on show – he has an eye for goal that can justify his price tag and should he drop to 6.4, he could yet provide good value.

However, with four away trips in the next six, this is arguably not the time to seize on the potential offered by Pochettino’s rearguard.

Like Arsenal’s defence, the most opportune window may arrive at Christmas, when, despite the busy schedule, both north London clubs are treated to softening fixtures.

The Talking Point

So will December offer the perfect window to re-align our squad spending, or should we take the lead offered by Koscienly and the Spurs defence now?

Certainly, the Frenchman’s 15-point tally reminded us of the value that can be gleaned from big-hitting defenders. If you can absorb some frustrating two-point returns, the big scores can follow and, in the mid-term, justify the spend.

While midfielders arguably remain the main target for our funds, Koscielny now averages 7.0 points per appearance – only Sergio Aguero amongst the forwards can better that.

Crucially, the Arsenal man has offered 6.9 points per million; his nearest rival within the ranks of forwards – Jermain Defoe (5.3) – would not even place in the top ten defenders for value.

Aguero as a consistent captaincy option perhaps remains a mainstay. Alongside him, the form of Romelu Lukaku and Diego Costa is difficult to ignore.

But the third striker spot is under pressure. The option of deploying 3-5-2 or even 4-4-2 and investing that extra million in defence looks all the more compelling after the events of Gameweek 7.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I think not but others think yes. There's no right answer.

Spurs have wba bou LEI ars WHM che as their next 6 games. That's not the easiest schedule when there are also vital CL games to handle as well. Rotation (or gametime management) may well also be an issue. That's why I'd say no.

The positives are his excellent goalscoring form and pretty much guaranteed price gains. Those could justify a hit for him if his recent returns continue. It also depends who you'd be removing. For some it is Antonio making way and some of those took hits to get him in not so long ago. 😕

When we have seen what he does over the next 6 games we'll know whether a hit for him was worthwhile. Right now you have to make your own judgement call.

    A) Valencia & Antonio > Bellerin & Snoddy (gives me Ars defence)

    B) Antonio & Rashford > Son/Wally & Austin/Wilson (would mean doubling up on Ars attack as have Sanchez)

A I want shot of Valencia too and Bellerin and Snod are very decent picks. But remember in both options Antonio still has some good fixtures for 3-4 weeks and could come good again. I am holding Antonio for those few fixtures.

Yes. Fair point. The above would both be for a -4 too.

You see a decent way of using my FT, such as Rashford > Wilson/Austin or Collins > Pieters, it would you save?

Keep Antonio with their fixtures, or lose him later for free. No need to take a hit.

If you have enough ITB (0.1m I think is needed) you could go Valencia to Vertonghen.

Interesting excerpt from an article on here. It's quite the opposite of what I have been doing. Might give it a go.

    "PLAYERS AND OWNERSHIP

As someone pointed out a while back, you don’t necessarily need a team full of low owned differentials to soar up the ranks, quite the opposite in fact. For example if you have give players in your side that each have 30% or more ownership, the percentage of people that owns all of those five same players is actually 0.25%, which as a fraction is 1/400. With around 3.5m players in the game this works out at around 8,750 managers. So stocking up on popular players such as Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane can be a differential in itself."

The link if anyone wants: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2016/07/06/fantasy-premier-league-top-tips/

I think that there was someone who posted several seasons ago that his tried and trusted selection method was to simply buy those players at the top (or near) of the points rankings. He had consistently achieved good finishes too.

Not very exciting way to play though ..... almost like blindly following FFF. Nah, let's fail on our own terms.

unfortunately you have chosen to go in what is called the newcastle blackout. businesses shut down and the city becomes a ghost town for a month long period. for the last 6 years the local mayor has even turned off the electricity to everywhere but the st james mall. the locals have complained because alot of the elderly folk are suffering because it can be quite chilly in april on the tyne. i suggest going to the nearby sunderland log fire for an evening or the gateshead heated library which keeps its power on. i believe there is normally 1 restaurant and 1 pub which is the designated receiver of the towns electric supply but this is drawn by ballot a week or 2 before and as you can imagine every one wants in so the town holds a lottery replacing the usual lower tier prizes with guaranteed entry to the pub. so if your going i hope youre feeling lucky!

Can any of the experienced FPL players help with a question, please?

I've been reading up on bonus points and saves, but I still don't know if getting rid of a budget keeper like Foster is a good idea when the fixtures get tough.

Obviously clean sheets are less likely, but he could make lots of saves against the better teams. What do the pros tend to do when their budget keepers play the top sides?

    1. Karan_G14
      • 10 Years

If he's having a good game he might make saves or on a bad day he might let in 5.

If you want saves pick Pickford. If you want clean sheets... good luck because nobody is keeping any. Arsenal probably best bet.

Unless your team is flawless in def/mid/att id never use a ft on a gk with bad fixtures. Clean sheets do happen against good sides, and when they do they often come with good save points and maybe even a cheeky bonus. And when they lose the worst you can do is usually 0, but 1-2 will be the usual. And noone else is getting clean sheets regularly at the moment.

      Have faith

Hey, so last time Burnley were in the PL, Heaton got 150 points and was the third best keeper (and still the cheapest of all keepers playing) even though Burnley went down and let in a ton of goals. Get him in and use the extra money elsewhere!

Which one is the better option?

    A)Vertonghen, Sterling, Austin

    B) Mustafi, Walcott, Wilson

I already own Sanchez & Aguero so it's a double up. ML leader owns Walcott but not Sterling. (A) leaves me with 0.0 ITB hence I could not get Wilson(6.4) and have to get Austin(6.3). This is purely for ML not OR as I'm playing GW19 cash out so things start to get a bit serious now 12 weeks left.

Would really appreciate your thoughts and some help to win me $$! Thanks.

Good to go barring international skirmishes?

    Heaton/Pickford
    Coleman Mustafi Holebas (Kelly Kingsley)
Sanchez (c) Payet Firmino Snodgrass (Fletcher)
    Aguero Lukaku Rashford

    0 FT. Zero in bank.

Cashed in on Capoue for Fletcher to afford a better defence.

I've changed Capoue to Fletcher. Had him from start and sold him for 4.9 so not complaining. Meant I could upgrade Shaw to Mustafi.

    B) Baines, Antonio -> Walcott/Son, smith/robertson/stoke def
    C) Antonio, Rashford -> Walcott/Son, Austin

    Team in full:
    Pickford Jaku

    Aguero Lukaku Rashford

team is nice. wouldnt be in rush to get rid of antonio. 4 good games coming up and as westham fan i can assure u we will score goals and he is involved in all our attacking play at minute with mr payet. also if u compare the numbers then even ignoring kos 2 goals he is the better pick over bellerin if u look at their numbers from last 2 seasons. in ur shoes i would just do baines to robertson. he could well outscore an arse defender over next 10 games.

I have 14/15 the same, only Clyne instead of Baines. I'm thinking jaku & Rashford > Cech & cheap striker and play 352 or Evans & Rashford > Bellerin & cheap striker and play 442

Hi guys, should I take a hit or just AOA to save me from this defense nightmare:

    Foster and mcauley (spurs)
    Valencia (Liverpool away)
    Coleman (city away)
    Amat (arsenal)
    Pickford (stoke)
    Souare (injured)

I have 2.9 mil itb since I went hazard to son.
I was considering Souare to premium defender from arsenal/spurs not decided which one.

I am actually leaning towards hit + AOA

What a great side that was i'll argue with anyone that was every bit as good as the treble winners of 99.. only a silly foreigner rule prevented us going head to head with the best in europe at full strength.. Ince for Robbo though.. he was past his best by then
