Chelsea’s midfielders “do a Liverpool” and rack up big hauls in an emphatic home win over Manchester United. Sergio Aguero returns to the Manchester City starting line-up but draws yet another blank, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic again falls short as United are humbled at the Bridge. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s matches…

On the Rise

Eden Hazard
While Diego Costa surprisingly failed to play a part in any of Chelsea four goals, Hazard notched for the second successive Gameweek to continue his recent renaissance.

The Blues’ recent change in shape has been key to the Belgian’s improvement – only Arsenal’s Theo Walcott has managed more shots in the box from midfield since Antonio Conte ditched his four-man defensive set-up.

At a time where rotation has recently hit hard following European matches, the fact that Chelsea are focused purely on domestic matters may yet persuade some to reconsider a resurgent Hazard.

Costa, meanwhile, also managed to avoid a booking today, leaving him on four yellows ahead of Wednesday’s EFL Cup clash with West Ham United. If he’s cautioned in that one, he’ll miss next weekend’s Gameweek 10 trip to Southampton.

Nemanja Matic
The Chelsea stopper has been transformed under Conte this season and continues to offer a steady source of creativity from the centre of the park.

Matic managed just three assists last season, but he’s already up to five this time around after teeing up Hazard for the Blues’ third. That’s the same number as Dimitri Payet and second only to Kevin De Bruyne’s six.

All five assists have arrived in the last seven Gameweeks as the Serb steadily improves in the 3-4-3 formation. Priced at 5.0, Matic has suddenly become an unlikely option for the fifth midfielder slot.

The Chelsea Defence
Conte’s men made it three wins and a trio of clean sheets since moving to a 3-4-3 formation.

Gary Cahill and Marcos Alonso highlighted their points potential with goal and assist respectively, earning both players bonus in the Red Devils’ thrashing.

Alonso has been the standout performer since Conte’s tactical switch and looks the man to monitor. He sits first for attempts on goal amongst defenders from Gameweek 7 onwards and is ranked second for key passes thanks to his role as a raiding left wing-back.

Nathan Redmond
Redmond’s underlying numbers have already been impressive over the season due to his role up top for Southampton.

One goal in the first seven shows he’d been failing to tuck away his chances but Sunday’s Etihad strike, added to last week’s goal against Burnley, suggests that Redmond’s form and confidence is on the ascent.

Having dropped to just 5.9 in the FPL, he is clearly a tempting prospect. However, the Saints’ schedule is testing, with Chelsea and Liverpool looming in the next three.

Also, the introduction of new boy Sofiane Boufal also adds to Claude Puel’s options in attack. The intentions for the club-record signing are not yet clear but we can presume a starting role beckons. It remains to be seen how this shakes up the Saints’ teamsheet.

In Decline

Sergio Aguero
The striker returned to the starting XI after a couple of appearances off the bench, but there’s no doubt that Aguero was nowhere near his best against the Saints, with all three of his attempts off target.

The Argentine remains the most popular player in FPL – sitting in 44% of squads; he was also the top pick for this weekend’s captaincy.

But Sunday’s blank means that Aguero has now failed to score in four of his last five league appearances. With the goals suddenly drying up for City (they’ve scored twice in four in all competitions), Fantasy faith in the Etihad side is on the wane and Aguero and Raheem Sterling are taking the hit.

Aguero’s ownership fell ahead of Gameweek 9 and is already dropping following Sunday’s 1-point return.

Kevin De Bruyne
Replaced at half-time with a knock, the Belgian’s owners will take solace in the fact that Pep Guardiola has confirmed the problem is not serious. Given the recent uncertainty surrounding Aguero’s pitch time, some Fantasy managers have been considering De Bruyne as their go-to City attacker ahead of some kind upcoming fixtures. Confirmation that his withdrawal was not tactical will at least go some way to softening a disappointing one-point return.

John Stones
City’s run of dire defensive displays continued, with their big-money signing from Everton gifting Redmond the opener.

Guardiola’s side have kept one clean sheet this season, which, coincidentally, was the only league fixture that Stones has failed to start.

With Vincent Kompany now back in the fold, the 24%-owned defender now looks under threat – today’s benching of Nicolas Otamendi shows we cannot take anything for granted with Guardiola’s teamsheets.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
The United veteran endured yet another disappointing day and has now scored just a single goal in his last seven league outings.

A home encounter with Burnley in Gameweek 10 may well be enough for many to hand him one last hurrah before reassessing their options.

The Clarets have conceded an average of three goals per road trip and, with 39% ownership, a big haul could still do damage to non-owners.

Many have already had enough, though – Ibrahimovic has already been subject to more transfers out than any forward ahead of Gameweek 10, having already lost 900,000 owners since Gameweek 5.

    Alright.

    Grant (Foster)
Walker - Holebas - Smith (Kingsley - Baines)
Sanchez - Son - Lallana - Allen (Fer)
    Aguero - Lukaku - Costa

My initial thought was to do:

    Fer --> Redmond

    But then I thought:
    Son or Lallana --> Coutinho

    What do you guys think?
    Thanks in advance.

i like Mane over Coutinho! Antonio and Foster out (-4) for:

      1) Mane and Grant
      2) Other suggestion. Defense is very bad 🙁
      3) Save?

      Foster (Pickford)
Baines, Collins, Mustafi (Amat, Mc Auley)
Walcott (vc), hazard, antonio, Chadli, (Capoue)
      Aguero (c), Lukaku, Deeney

I dont know why some people are hesitating to double up on Liverpool mids.

    Coutinho- 4 goals 3 assists
    Mane- 4 goals 2 assists
    Firmino - 3 goals 3 assists
    Lallana- 3 goals 3 assist

With form and fixtures in their side just get 2 of them and relax. Agree ?

We should have an Aguero crisis talk. Preferably initiated by a FFS article on his current situation at City. What is going wrong, and what to do?

A lot of people seem to be shipping him out already despite very tasty forthcoming fixtures. Should he be kept for those, regardless of his current form? How bad is that form, really?

He hasn't looked himself but I'm definitely sticking with him. Great fixtures and once he gets that first goal, the flurry will begin.

Plus who else is there, Ibra isn't firing and Kane is injured.
Maybe Costa, but I don't trust him. Lukaku is a 2nd striker at best.

Well, if you look at his stats, he's quite on par with someone like Wilson and Defoe, and way lagging behind the likes of Austin, Benteke, Zlatan, and his team mate Iheanacho. That's some who are there. Lukaku is doing better too in some ways. It is telling that Iheanacho did much more in much shorter time today than Kun.

His shot numbers were absolutely fine back then. They also were quite fine just a few weeks ago. But they've been going down recently. Badly.

But he wasn't getting the points last season, which is the most important thing. He scored four against Newcastle but not much else until december at least. Personally, i haven't had any City players in the past three GWs.

5 against Newcastle, and then he got injured and hardly played at all before January.

But the point is: back then, when he was on pitch, he was as dangerous as ever, and it looked like he was going to start to score any day, very much like Zlatan this season. He was explosion imminent, and exploded against Newcastle. I'm anticipating Zlatan explosion, but Aguero's shot numbers are plunging, they give no reason why he should have scored a lot recently and no signs of him getting a big haul anytime soon.

I know I'm not the only one for whom this is an issue: if you have 13+ priced player you must be able to captain him.

I was going to say that his next few fixtures are the high end captaincy fixtures, which they are at the first glance, but looking again, those are some tough defences there. I'm still quite convinced they're the kind of defences that Pep sorts out though. But will he smash them?

On another look, it is pretty bad.

Still, sort your midfield and it looks much better. That's 3 transfers, not a wildcard.

    A. Sterling > Coutinho

    B. Son + Williams > Coutinho + Pieters

Get in Holebas, Smith or Pieters?

Both Holebas and Smith if you can. Coin flip if you can't. Pieters only if you need funds to strengthen elsewhere.

    Thoughts on Snodgrass, Williams > Matic/Allen, Alonso/Costa
Also which pair from the above looks best?

      Sorry Cahill instead of costa

I'd say Matic + Costa. I've been keeping an eye on Matic all season and he's a steady stream of assists.

Didn't mean costa, I meant Cahill as I'm transferring in a mid and a defender

So, bit of madness but I have the exCt cash to do Antonio and Sanchez to Coutinho and Hazard.

Gives me Chelsea cover for their nice fixtures, whilst doubling up on Liverpool.

Sanchez has been more of a creator and Sunderland could mark him out of the game?

I'd hold sanchez for sunderland before getting rid (not that I would)

Any suggestions for this lot? I'm thinking Capoue to either Sterling or Firmino and then replacing Collins next week

    Pickford Foster
    Walker Williams Collins Evans Love
    Hojbjerg Coutinho Sanchez Walcott Capoue
    Deeney Kun Wilson

Yes, if you can afford, I think Mane will do better than Coutinho. Can you advise me.

Antonio and Foster out (-4) for:

      1) Mane and Grant
      2) Other suggestion. Defense is very bad and I will get Francis next week for Baines?

    A. Allen
    B. Matic
    Pick another 1:

Hey guys, I want a liverpool mid but I cannot afford Coutinho but i only have 1.8 ITB

    My team is:

    Heaton
    Blind Coleman Mustafi (Amat, Love)
Sanchez Firmino Walcott Capoue (De Pena)
    Aguero Austin Lukaku

    Is Milner worth bringing in?

Thoughts on Matic as an option? Cheap, playing for a good team and getting assists aplenty.

Probably going to bring him in next week + Costa for a -4. Been watching him all season and he's been a reliable source of assists.

I am still not sure on selling Sterling.

Pep had probably seen today that he is much more dangerous when he is on the right wing. But the fact is that the formation with 3 at the back doesn't suit Sterling.

Also, it's worthy looking at his history this season. He blanked against all top teams, but got the points against every weaker team. His next 4 are weak teams.

Zabaleta is dead already, but he should be back for next match. Sagna for the gameweek after that. We'll probably come back to the 4 at the back very soon, so he can be classic right wing with runs into the middle.

I am afraid to sell him for Coutinho (have Lallana) although I would lose only 0.1 on value, but will need hit to get him back if he hits the form again. What you say?

Not a Sterling owner. But I would probably hold.

I think may play Wed against United and get rested v WBA before Barcelona on following Tuesday. Also expect double price rise.

Coutinho double rise yes I think so

    3. MTPockets

      I just sold him.
0 ITB so if Sterling picks up can get him back in. If he doesn't it becomes a price problem.

    Foster/Jaku
    Baines/Shaw/Stones/Amat/McCauley
    Sanchez/Firmino/Antonio/Allen/Capoue
    Aguero/Lukaku//Defoe

Baines, Shaw, Antonio, Jaku need to go.

After what happened this week, it looks like he's more likely to be rested in the Barça game than for it.

Yeah, maybe, difficult to read Pep.

Definitely too risky to captain Aguero right now.
