Chelsea’s midfielders “do a Liverpool” and rack up big hauls in an emphatic home win over Manchester United. Sergio Aguero returns to the Manchester City starting line-up but draws yet another blank, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic again falls short as United are humbled at the Bridge. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s matches…

On the Rise

Eden Hazard
While Diego Costa surprisingly failed to play a part in any of Chelsea four goals, Hazard notched for the second successive Gameweek to continue his recent renaissance.

The Blues’ recent change in shape has been key to the Belgian’s improvement – only Arsenal’s Theo Walcott has managed more shots in the box from midfield since Antonio Conte ditched his four-man defensive set-up.

At a time where rotation has recently hit hard following European matches, the fact that Chelsea are focused purely on domestic matters may yet persuade some to reconsider a resurgent Hazard.

Costa, meanwhile, also managed to avoid a booking today, leaving him on four yellows ahead of Wednesday’s EFL Cup clash with West Ham United. If he’s cautioned in that one, he’ll miss next weekend’s Gameweek 10 trip to Southampton.

Nemanja Matic
The Chelsea stopper has been transformed under Conte this season and continues to offer a steady source of creativity from the centre of the park.

Matic managed just three assists last season, but he’s already up to five this time around after teeing up Hazard for the Blues’ third. That’s the same number as Dimitri Payet and second only to Kevin De Bruyne’s six.

All five assists have arrived in the last seven Gameweeks as the Serb steadily improves in the 3-4-3 formation. Priced at 5.0, Matic has suddenly become an unlikely option for the fifth midfielder slot.

The Chelsea Defence
Conte’s men made it three wins and a trio of clean sheets since moving to a 3-4-3 formation.

Gary Cahill and Marcos Alonso highlighted their points potential with goal and assist respectively, earning both players bonus in the Red Devils’ thrashing.

Alonso has been the standout performer since Conte’s tactical switch and looks the man to monitor. He sits first for attempts on goal amongst defenders from Gameweek 7 onwards and is ranked second for key passes thanks to his role as a raiding left wing-back.

Nathan Redmond
Redmond’s underlying numbers have already been impressive over the season due to his role up top for Southampton.

One goal in the first seven shows he’d been failing to tuck away his chances but Sunday’s Etihad strike, added to last week’s goal against Burnley, suggests that Redmond’s form and confidence is on the ascent.

Having dropped to just 5.9 in the FPL, he is clearly a tempting prospect. However, the Saints’ schedule is testing, with Chelsea and Liverpool looming in the next three.

Also, the introduction of new boy Sofiane Boufal also adds to Claude Puel’s options in attack. The intentions for the club-record signing are not yet clear but we can presume a starting role beckons. It remains to be seen how this shakes up the Saints’ teamsheet.

In Decline

Sergio Aguero
The striker returned to the starting XI after a couple of appearances off the bench, but there’s no doubt that Aguero was nowhere near his best against the Saints, with all three of his attempts off target.

The Argentine remains the most popular player in FPL – sitting in 44% of squads; he was also the top pick for this weekend’s captaincy.

But Sunday’s blank means that Aguero has now failed to score in four of his last five league appearances. With the goals suddenly drying up for City (they’ve scored twice in four in all competitions), Fantasy faith in the Etihad side is on the wane and Aguero and Raheem Sterling are taking the hit.

Aguero’s ownership fell ahead of Gameweek 9 and is already dropping following Sunday’s 1-point return.

Kevin De Bruyne
Replaced at half-time with a knock, the Belgian’s owners will take solace in the fact that Pep Guardiola has confirmed the problem is not serious. Given the recent uncertainty surrounding Aguero’s pitch time, some Fantasy managers have been considering De Bruyne as their go-to City attacker ahead of some kind upcoming fixtures. Confirmation that his withdrawal was not tactical will at least go some way to softening a disappointing one-point return.

John Stones
City’s run of dire defensive displays continued, with their big-money signing from Everton gifting Redmond the opener.

Guardiola’s side have kept one clean sheet this season, which, coincidentally, was the only league fixture that Stones has failed to start.

With Vincent Kompany now back in the fold, the 24%-owned defender now looks under threat – today’s benching of Nicolas Otamendi shows we cannot take anything for granted with Guardiola’s teamsheets.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
The United veteran endured yet another disappointing day and has now scored just a single goal in his last seven league outings.

A home encounter with Burnley in Gameweek 10 may well be enough for many to hand him one last hurrah before reassessing their options.

The Clarets have conceded an average of three goals per road trip and, with 39% ownership, a big haul could still do damage to non-owners.

Many have already had enough, though – Ibrahimovic has already been subject to more transfers out than any forward ahead of Gameweek 10, having already lost 900,000 owners since Gameweek 5.

    Foster
    Walker - Valencia - Holebas
    Sanchez - Firmino - Walcott - Capoue
    Aguero - Lukaku - Deeney

    Pickford - Snodgrass - Evans - Amat

Already made my transfer doing Collins->Holebas. Worth a -4 to Enter Shaqiri and exit Snodgrass?

Not if it means benching Capoue v Hull. Has the potential to backfire hideously.

It would mean benching Capoue vs Hull, yes. Although Hull is bad, it's hard to see Capoue getting points now that he's not even getting in scoring positions.

But yeah, the sensible move surely is to just play Capoue.

I'd be much keener to have a player playing against Hull than a one playing for Stoke.

But it's true that Capoue has been far from scoring zone recently.

Not if you wanna play Capoue v Hull. Shaqiri might go on a little run with Stokes kind fixtures.

He's a streaky player but you can never really trust Stoke to score goals - it's one for your gut instinct I think.

Not sure I see points for Capoue even against Hull.

Yeah, fixtures are nice and Stoke are only looking up atm. Would go after five games anyways.

Quoting myself from earlier post today:

Put it in perspective, Stoke had +1 shots in box difference against Hull; Hull's last 4 opponents averaged a +12 shots in box difference against Hull. Shaqiri himself only had 3 shots, and scored two long rangers. Yes, that boy's got one heckuva shot in him, but still, his long term out of box conversion rate is rather normal 4% (CL, Bundesliga, EL, Serie A and PL counted, not Swiss league), so I'd suppose that that 100% rate he got in this one match is going to revert to the mean rather drastically.

Yeah, for sure, he won't score long rangers every other week. But he's creating plenty of chances, so the assists will come in addition to an occasional long ranger. Takes set pieces aswell, and does so brilliantly.

Not nearly good enough chance creation stats to make up for lack of quality scoring chances. And that's after having just played Hull. That match skews stats. Not so much as it did to Stanislas, but it still does. He over doubled his normal dance creation rate in that Hull match. Which way you think it will go: back to his previous normal, or keep up at the against Hull level? Do we have any reason to think that teams can repeat their Hull match performances against any other PL team?

        Is it really?

3 goals in 5 games, stats are great (creative ones), and fixtures are great for the next five.

    Which is better?

    A)

    Mandana Pickford

Bellerin Pieters Van Djik Nyom Kingsley

    Or B)

    Grant Pickford

    Bellerin Pieters Alonso Amat Kingsley

With a) I've got a balanced squad with subs but with b) I get Marcos Alonso but would be nailed on every week and has huge points potential but I only have one keeper once Butland comes back and only one playing sub in Kingsley (who may be under threat from Taylor) for my outfield positions. Are subs that important or should we be going balls out to get the starting 11 we want?

If a WC I think Lloris, Mustafi (cheapest ARS/TOT) with VVD and Alonso would be the way to go. Chuck in two cheapies.

Yeah that would be great! covers most ends. Could you advice me as well. i am thinking of either downgrading Foster or upscaling to Lloris?

Antonio and A)Baines or B) Foster out (-4) for:

        1) Mane and Grant
        2) Other suggestion. Defense is very bad
        3) Save?

        Foster (Pickford)
Baines, Collins, Mustafi (Amat, Mc Auley)
Walcott (vc), hazard, antonio, Chadli, (Capoue)
        Aguero (c), Lukaku, Deeney

        1.7 ITB. 1FT

        1. Jay_
          9 years, 9 months ago

Just do Antonio to Coutinho or Firmino. No point getting Grant just to fund Mane. In 2 weeks Butland will be back and WBA fixtures turn good. Baines to Walker or Alonso sets u up nicely for future if you need to take a defensive hit to field XI.

Nah not on a wild card will take a few transfers to get there.

Have attack done and dusted barring injury so next couple of weeks to sort out defence. Prepared to take a hit to speed up the process too.

Main thing is to have ARS and TOT cleanies covered. I've tried going different and it's hurting me. Just get them bases covered and worry about the other few spots after imo

That's what I've banked on, already used my FT but I'd have gotten both ARS and TOT def's if I had more FT's. Luckily this week was the last of the easyish games, but their ownership is so high, it needs protecting against.

Coutinho looks like he is on another level this season and takes so many shots.

Firmino is up front and always involved in setting up or attempting chances.

Playing safe will have got most people nowhere last 3 game weeks as Sanchez and aguero have basically blanked every time (apart from one Sanchez assist).

That's why deeney is appealing. Hull are terrible.

Deeney has (c) next to his name on my team-sheet at the moment.

Long time to talk myself out of it yet. However, all my captain picks have been rubbish this season when going for obvious big hitters, so I may just do it.

    Stones-pieters-Holebas-francis-Evans
    Antonio-Walcott-Sanchez-Redmond-Capoue
    Aguero-Lukaku - Austin

1Ft and 3.5 in the bank. Couldn't do Antonio âž¡ k.d.bruyne because of price drop for antonio. It didn't really matter but any transfer suggestions for coming weeks please.

Just the defence that needs looking into IMO.

I'd want to get rid of both Valencia and Williams.

I'd be looking to a Liv defender, holebas, pieters, alonso, or an arsenal defender.

So which big hitter to downgrade (looking to upgrade Snodd(cheap but useless. Can't have both Snodd and Capoue in a team imo. Or upgrade Capoue)).

    Sanchez or Aguero

What would you do with this? 2FT, 0.1 ITB

    Foster, 4.0 GK
    Bellerin, Vertonghen, McAuley, ASmith, 3.9D
    Sanchez, Ozil, Cout, Antonio, Bolasie
    Aguero, Deeney, 4.5S

4.0GK, 3.9D and 4.5S all don't play many minutes. So I'm tempted to change one of these...
