Undiluted woe for United, unbridled joy for Southampton – Thursday’s Europa League matches were a study in contrast. Here’s how the two ties panned out.

Fenerbahce 2 Manchester United 1

Injuries, goal droughts and a manager publicly shaming his players; dropping to third in their Europa League group was the least of Manchester United’s worries following a dreadful performance in Turkey.

Even Wayne Rooney (8.6) scoring for only the second time in 14 matches this season did little to lift the gloom on a night of unremitting negativity for the Red Devils.

Paul Pogba (8.2) limped off with a thigh injury that makes him a doubt for Sunday’s trip to Swansea. Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.2) replaced him and again failed to score – he now has just one goal from his last 11 matches – while the team as a whole enjoyed 70% possession but did precious little with it.

A makeshift defence missing Eric Bailly (5.4), Antonio Valencia (5.5) and Chris Smalling (5.9) conceded a goal within two minutes and never recovered. Only the latter, who has a knock, is a short-term injury worry and the pair drafted in as centre-halves in Turkey, Daley Blind (5.8) and Marcos Rojo (5.2), looked uneasy all night.

Coach Jose Mourinho started Ander Herrera (6.3), who is suspended domestically, and Morgan Schneiderlin (4.6) in midfield in a bid to give Juan Mata (7.4) a rest. But the pair produced so little that the Spaniard was brought on at half-time.

By then, the die had been cast, as Mourinho was quick to point out post-match.

“A team that concedes after two minutes is a team that is not ready, not mentally prepared, not focused, not concentrated.”

Summer signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.9) replaced the ineffectual Marcus Rashford (6.9) for the final half hour but had little impact, with Mourinho talking down his immediate prospects.

“He has to do more. That is as simple as that. We have big expectations in the club and lots of players for these positions. He has to play better than Mata and Lingard and Martial, and it’s a simple as that.”

After such a night to forget, the same could be said of the whole side.

Swansea City will suddenly fancy their chances of a Gameweek 11 “upset”, with United’s squad currently looking bereft of assets to tempt even a cursory glance from us Fantasy managers.

Manchester United XI: de Gea, Darmian, Blind, Rojo, Shaw, Herrera, Schneiderlin (Mata 45), Pogba (Ibrahimovic 30), Rashford (Mkhitaryan 61), Rooney, Martial.
Subs not used: Romero, Jones, Young, Fellaini.

Southampton 2 Internazionale 1

The Saints exorcised any demons left over from their unfortunate loss in the San Siro by grabbing a glorious win against their Italian opponents in the reverse fixture.

Inter had pinched victory against the run of play in Italy and threatened to repeat the trick when they scored from their first shot of the match at St Mary’s.

But a Virgil van Dijk (5.4) equaliser, after Oriol Romeu (4.5) had hit the bar, and then a Yuto Nagatomo own goal from a Dusan Tadic (7.2) cross turned everything round in a blistering second-half performance.

Tadic had blown a chance to level the match just before the break when he had a penalty saved. Charlie Austin (6.7), who was not on the pitch at the time, should remain the club’s spot-kick man if Tadic’s weak effort is anything to go by.

Austin came on in the second half, replacing Jay Rodriguez (6.3), one of five changes coach Claude Puel had made from the side that lost to Chelsea on Sunday.

In came Maya Yoshida (4.3), Sam McQueen (4.5) James Ward-Prowse (5.1) and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg (4.3).

Puel has generally juggled his resources well, but the workload for two of his attacking stars, Tadic and Nathan Redmond (6.0), has been high. Record signing Sofiane Boufal (6.8) was again on the bench, but played no part. Whether that suggests he will figure in Sunday’s trip to Hull remains to be seen.

The 12.8%-owned Austin, however, looks almost nailed-on for a start at the weekend.

Southampton XI: Forster, Martina, Yoshida, van Dijk, McQueen, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Højbjerg, Redmond, Tadic (Davis 76), Rodriguez (Austin 58).
Subs not used: Lewis, Clasie, Fonte, Boufal, Bertrand.

I've left myself a bit of a problem. I have to bench one of these for tomorrow:
    Gundogan, Sterling, Allen, Austin

    Full squad is
    Heaton, Pickford
    McAuley, Evans, Mustafi, Pieters, Parades
    Sanchez, Coutinho, Allen, Sterling, Gundogan
    Aguero, Costa, Austin

    What do you reckon?

Probs Allen, he can be considered a 5th mid in my opinion... but maybe long term downgrade and upgrade defence, it looks a tad light [retweets are not endorsements]

Thanks all - you're right, Allen is a 5th mid but he's just a bit too good for that and yes its going to be a problem each week to monitor with fixtures.

Hull are top or close to top for chances conceded from set pieces, so VVD could have a field day.

No Toby Alderweireld in the Belgium squad due to his knee injury. Dembélé is part of the squad.

It's likely to be a one week punt, looking to WC over the international break anyway.

        But would like a better defensive option for this weekend;

Shaw, and Stones look okay, but then I have

        Holebas - away to Liverpool
Friend - away to Man City
Amat - who probably won't play - but even if he does has Utd.

I can do Amat to 4.3m player, and Martina looks the best option.

Because Spurs' recent woes have been attacking. Not defensive. It's quite simple really. I would have thought FPL players frequenting FFS would base their decisions on more than what they read in the tabloids.

Meh.. they done 1 goal (open play) in the last three PL games against brom, Bournemouth and Leicester. Fair enough, defensively good teams all of them. But with Arsenal, Chelsea and a well.. United coming up Spurs will be tested. Sure if you got walker at 5.5 then fair enough. But I think his 6.1 will be devalued soon enough..

don't do it. spurs are good at defence. some fixtures wont change the fact that Spurs are a better team and long term Walker will have more points than Fuchs. Also, if you do it now you will find yourself spending another FT to bring him back at some point.

But his stats don't hold up as a premium def. Esp not his attacking potential. Compared to say, Bellerin, third fewer touches in final third, two thirds fewer touches in penalty area. He just doesn't have that added threat you'd expect.

Just a Son to Firm for me there - don't really trust this Gund bandwagon.

Pulis rates Brunt - highly likely that he'll start.

What are Shaqiri owners doing? Was planning to sell but may hold now that he has a chance. BOU, wat, BUR after the international break even if he misses out.

I think it depends on who you can replace him with I guess.

I was struggling to sort out my midfield, but the Bellarin injury has actually helped. Cheeky downgrade to Fuchs, free up the funds to get Hazard.

Question though how urgent would you guys suggest shipping Rashford and Foster (for Heaton Obvs) is??. Worth hits?

Or would you say that the upcoming decent West Brom fixtures negate the need to get rid of Foster??

    Foster (Pick)

    Vert Fuchs McCauley Amat Holebas

    Haz Sterling Allen Chadli Firmino

    Aguero Lukaku Rashford

but anyway, I'm doing Foster > Heaton for a hit because I'll never get round to it otherwise. Like you I have Mccauley to compensate.

I'm also selling rashford for a hit.

sound like a similar set up.... who are you thinking for Rashford? someone cheap to go 3-5-2 or someone like Austin to give options for 3-4-3??

Bony for me. Already on 3-5-2. Could go austin too but like stoke's chances with reid out, and I don't have allen.

This is true now, when I made the transfer he was a doubt.... it was just enough of a push i needed to make the transfer

I do know... cheers. I went with an early transfer to avoid price changes. But to be honest, with Ars fixtures, I'm not regretting it even though he is fit again

It's only a -4 point hit, your other transfers shouldn't really figure in your thinking.

You mean Valencia for Stones for -4 right? I'd do that.

I'm sure he was correct in saying Valencia to Stones... but i would wait.... and also consider Chelsea defens (alonso) as alternative if you can afford?

    Any doubts on Wilson starting?
He was subbed off at 60 mins last match.

EH: "Just a few bumps and bruises" which will be assessed.

    Appreciate your thoughts!

quite jealous tbh but defence could do with upgrading if possible but assuming your at full cap it looks good

Cheers mate. Yeah, at full cap - need to strengthen the defence at some point but money would probably have to come from one of KDB, Costa or Lukaku and I can't take any of them out currently! Nice problem to have though I guess.
