Last Gameweek’s poll favourite Sergio Aguero (13.2) disappointed with a blank away at Crystal Palace.

A failure to register even a single shot on target at Selhurst Park, coupled with a potentially tough away trip to Burnley, is likely to dent the 46.5%-owned Man City striker’s prospects.

The Clarets have conceded a mere six goals in seven home matches this season.

Instead, Liverpool’s midfield maestros of Robert Firmino (8.8), Philippe Coutinho (8.7) and Sadio Mane (9.1) may push for the summit. Each has a strong case for the armband, although with 38 FPL points across his last four home league encounters, the 45.8%-owned Coutinho looks the pick of the trio.

With 35 points and 30 points respectively over the same matches, Mane and “false nine” Firmino are also very much in contention.

Arsenal also have a number captaincy contenders when they host Bournemouth.

The Gunners’ key options – 22.1% owned Alexis Sanchez (11.3) and Theo Walcott (7.8) – will have to improve on their lacklustre display against Manchester United in Gameweek 12 if they are to take advantage. At Old Trafford, neither managed a shot on target, with 12.3% owned Walcott failing to register a single goal attempt.

Mesut Ozil (9.6) and 1.6% owned super sub Olivier Giroud (8.8) offer alternatives. The former has served up 28 points in his last four home outings, while the latter has scored three goals from the bench in as many matches.

At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea’s resilient defence, which is looking for its seventh league clean sheet in a row, will be put to the test when Spurs pay visit.

With goals in each of his last four league matches, the 6.4%-owned Harry Kane (10.8) will prove a stern test and may win support in the poll, particular after his brace against West Ham on Saturday evening.

Tottenham’s defence has been far more obliging of late, with just one clean sheet in their last four league fixtures. They will also be without the suspended Danny Rose, with doubts remaining on the availability of Toby Alderweireld.

This presents one of Eden Hazard (10.1) or Diego Costa (10.5) with the opportunity to even top the poll this week.

The 31.3%-owned Belgian has delivered attacking returns in every home match since manager Antonio Conte switched to a 3-4-3 formation in Gameweek 7. The consistency of the 41.7%-owned Costa is also enticing, with a goal in three of his last four Gameweeks at the Bridge.

Another reliable selection that may gain votes is Swansea City’s 3.4%-owned Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.2). He has provided returns in four of the last five Gameweeks and hosts a Crystal Palace side still in search of their first clean sheet of the campaign.

Fantasy Football’s forgotten man Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.1) offers another strong candidate.

Sold by more than 1.6m FPL managers this season, the Man United striker has dropped off the radar as a captaincy option. But with a brace in Gameweek 11 away to Swansea, this weekend’s home clash with West Ham offers a chance for further redemption as he looks to reward the 25.4% of patient FPL managers that have stuck by him.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

No mention of Yaya this morning.

If it was Siggy or Wally (those in the price bracket) - they would be a wave of transfers?

He's better than Gundogan imo, is he unlikely to play much rest of the season?

When Wenger says "the solution of Alexis up front has worked well and I have two options at the moment. Olivier Giroud is in both options because Alexis can play on the flank" by this he surely means that he can either:

    A) Start with Sanchez up top, bring on Giroud if needed as a target man and shift Sanchez wide (ie Giroud is involved)
    or
    B) Start the match with Giroud up top in place of Sanchez, who would then most likely play out wide

If think a few on here are reading a bit too much into this, I don't think this is confirmation that Giroud is nailed at all. Just my two cents.

    1. Bubz
      • 12 Years
      9 years, 8 months ago

He means either start with Giroud up front on his own or play 2 strikers (as he has hinted at doing earlier in the season)

      1. THE Wild Rover
        • 15 Years
        9 years, 8 months ago

Well one of his two options based on the season so far is benching Giroud 😉

I think it's because he hasnt been fully fit. He will start from now on imo. Or at least will do soon

      2. Shirokov(c)
        • 10 Years

But he hasn't actually done that though, has he? Until he plays with two up top for at least a couple of games I'd be worried about getting in Giroud.

        1. Bubz

          • 15 Years

I read it as one option is to start Giroud with Sanchez on the flank and the other is to bench Giroud and sub him in as required. I see nothing to suggest two up front

Yeah , recall that one too.
Theo was basically alternating with Sanchez up front during games though . perhaps that's what he meant ?

I think Wenger means 'I have two OTHER options (other than Alexis up front on his own and Giroud on the bench).'

One is to play both Alexis AND Giroud up front, and one is to play Giroud up front and Alexis on the wing.

      So, 3 options in total.

    Daniels/Fuchs/Morgan
    Firmino/Gundogan/Coutinho/De Bruyne/Hazard
    Aguero/Austin

i have 2 free transfers and 0.6 in the bank HELP!

I'm tempted to swap aguero + austin >> Costa or Kane + Giroud
Or Swap Fuchs >> Van dijk. or try get alonso in somewhere

So many decisions! The worst thing about having an all star midfield is who to give the sack :/

    1. AndyCook
      9 years, 8 months ago

Gundogan needs to go, defence is weak. Look at getting Cedric he is better value. Who are your other players? Give Aguero another week as Kane and Costa both have poor fixtures next week. Leicester have an okay fixture next weak, Daniels could get negative score. Austin worth keeping for fixtures until Giroud nailed. Do Daniels to Cedric this week, then look at losing Aguero next week and upgrading Gundogan with the cash.

      Seemingly.

I probably won't captain him again until GW20, which does rather beg the question whether £13m is being well spent. Also, it's almost impossible for him to rise much further, so it's not particularly difficult to bring him back in, as long as I don't spread the cash too thinly.

I don't understand the Giroud love. If you want mid-proced options look in midfield, if you want premium, there's plenty of strikers. £8.8m is too much for a doubtful starter.

Everton has difficult fixtures upcoming but i think Lukaku is the only real threat. And neither M utd,Liverpool have good defences this year.Arsenal conceeded goal quite often in away games.Last year against those 3 lukaku scored only against liverpool in home games. This that i am thinking is that because Everton has a difficult fixture the team will expect from Lukaku to be good and i think the same himself.Against Southampton i wait a respond(last year also scored twice) after a 5-0 and 1-1.Maybe i am thinking it wrong.

Looking through teams in the top 50 overall teams - barely any have Aguero. Am I doing it all wrong!?

Could Costa + Kane/Lukaku + Defoe/Austin be the way forward?

Could 3-5-2 be the way forward too with so many mids proving the points this season?

    A) Pedro + Lukaku
    B) Hazard + Austin minus 4 points
    C) Bolasie + Kane minus 4 points

Coutinho looks the safest (C) option this week but I'm having trouble getting him in:

Current midfield is Hazard, Firmino, Walcott, Siggy

    A) Walcott to Coutinho (-4)?
    B) Keep Walcott and captain Firmino instead

      B,
I'm even considering Cpt Walcott (gut) but a number of options worth considering as Cpt this week
However, if you are set on Coutinho as a Cpt then the - 4 is ok
