Alexis Sanchez strikes a timely double with Theo Walcott providing an able midfield sidekick as Arsenal see off Bournemouth. Meanwhile, the Saints’ Charlie Austin’s ascent as a mid-price frontman is proving hard to ignore, as another blank from Everton’s Romelu Lukaku sees his transfer exodus pick up pace. Here’s the Stock Check from Sunday’s quartet of matches.

On the Rise

Alexis Sanchez
The Chilean followed Sergio Aguero’s lead by bagging a brace as Arsenal got the better of Bournemouth at the Emirates.

Doubts had been mounting over Sanchez’ value for money – he’d blanked in five of the previous six and had scored just once at home prior to Sunday’s performance.

With Olivier Giroud back on the bench, though, Sanchez was deployed as the central striker once again and served a timely reminder of his armband potential by producing a fifth double-figure haul of the season.

In a weekend when Kevin De Bruyne was benched for City’s trip to Burnley and Philippe Coutinho’s ankle injury potentially sparking a major exodus, Sanchez’ appeal has clearly been boosted by recent events.

Theo Walcott
Utilised as a sub against PSG in midweek, Walcott was reinstalled to Arsene Wenger’s first XI for the Cherries’ encounter.

The wide man has how started 12 of the opening 13 league fixtures – only missing the Gameweek 10 trip to Sunderland with a minor injury.

Today’s haul takes him onto 71 points – that’s fifth amongst midfielders and just two behind Roberto Firmino.

Having managed just two 10+ points hauls, Walcott may lack Sanchez’ explosive appeal, yet, at a price of 7.8, he continues to offer excellent value for money in the mid-price bracket.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
After netting twice at Swansea in Gameweek 11, the big Swede took his tally to three goals in his last two as he hints at a step up in consistency.

Indeed, this was the first time Ibrahimovic has scored in back-to-back top-flight appearances since Gameweek 2, having missed last week’s clash with Arsenal due to suspension.

After a series of inconsistent displays, it’ll take more than today’s goal to convince many to reconsider Ibrahimovic, yet with some fine fixtures to follow, he’s likely to remain United’s chief attacking force over the festive period.

Charlie Austin
The Southampton forward took his tally to six goals in nine Gameweeks by netting a quick-fire winner against Everton earlier this afternoon.

Despite being devoid of both Dusan Tadic and Sofiane Boufal, Claude Puel was once again able to rely on Austin to carry the Saints’ main threat – he has now been involved in 77.8% of his side’s goals when on the pitch.

Having started each of the last eight, any concerns over Austin’s minutes look unfounded. With clashes against Palace, Middlesbrough, Stoke and Bournemouth in the next four, he looks well set to keep on delivering value for money at just 6.8.

Cedric Soares
Southampton’s right-back continues to look like a lucky charm for Puel.

A 1-0 win over Everton means that the Saints have chalked up a clean sheet in each of the last five league matches that Cedric has started.

Priced at just 4.9, he’s the cheapest route into the St Mary’s rearguard and underlined his value for money by also chipping in with two bonus points today.

Having also kept out Liverpool last week, Southampton’s defence looks ripe for investment right now, with Puel’s outfit set for some excellent upcoming fixtures to augment their appeal.

Dimitri Payet
The Frenchman’s cross for Diafra Sakho’s opener at Old Trafford means he now has six assists in 11 appearances.

Considering he managed a total of 13 assists last season, Payet’s upturn in creative output is worth monitoring. Indeed, he has now provided 11 key passes more than any player over the first 13 Gameweeks.

Granted, West Ham’s next two matches – against Arsenal and Liverpool – may persuade many to overlook him for now.

Nonetheless, the schedule from Gameweek 16 onwards, which kick starts with back-to-back home clashes against Burnley and Hull, could see that 9.7% FPL ownership climb sooner rather than later.

In Decline

Romelu Lukaku
It’s one goal in the last five fixtures now for the Everton frontman, who is already the most transferred out forward in the Gameweek by some margin.

Even the underlying numbers afford little optimism – a single off-target free-kick was all Lukaku had to offer today as the Toffees’ slide down the table continues.

With clashes against United, Arsenal and Liverpool in the next four, the big Belgian seems set for a significant exodus as the schedule turns against Ronald Koeman’s side.

Olivier Giroud
Despite netting for the fifth time in as many appearances with a strike against PSG, the Frenchman remains unable to find a way into the Arsenal first XI in the Premier League.

Many expected Giroud to start up after he led the line in midweek but he was again utilised off the bench and has yet to start a league match this season.

Granted, he supplied a late assist to vindicate the 50,000+ transfers in last week but with Sanchez and Walcott grabbing the goals, Giroud remains no more than a Plan B.

Wenger’s post-match confirmation that Giroud picked up a hamstring problem and is set to be assessed merely strengthens the idea that Sanchez will remain the central striker for next week’s trip to West Ham.

Carl Jenkinson
We’d expected the Arsenal right-back to offer a decent short-term option in the absence of Hector Bellerin but, having started against PSG in midweek, Jenkinson was omitted from the squad altogether this afternoon.

Wenger was made to rue his decision to start Mathieu Debuchy when the Frenchman limped off within 20 minutes due to a hamstring injury, with Gabriel his replacement. Jenkinson may well be handed a reprieve for next week’s clash with the Hammers but with Bellerin expected back in mid-December, the former looks best avoided.

Wilfried Bony, Bojan
Bony and Bojan were marked as the fall guys for last week’s home loss to Bournemouth as both dropped down to the bench for the Potters’ trip to Watford.

Bony had started nine straight matches since arriving on loan from Man City but with midweek reports suggesting that his parent club could sell the Ivorian over the winter window, Mark Hughes opted to bench him despite switching tactics and opting for two up front.

Bojan’s omission was just as surprising, given that Joe Allen sat out today’s fixture due to suspension. Installed to the starting XI for the first time in seven Gameweeks last weekend, the Spaniard’s immediate demotion is indicative of how far he’s fallen under Hughes this season.

Allen owners, meanwhile, will be optimistic he could return to the role in “the hole” at home to Burnley next weekend after he was shifted to the double-pivot against the Cherries last time out.

Juan Mata
We had hopes that Juan Mata could emerge as a viable option but the Spaniard was hauled off just after the hour-mark against West Ham, suggesting his minutes will continue to be in question. That’s likely a symptom of Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s return to the United reckoning which could dent Mata’s pitch time from here on.

So I would have been priced out of coutinho/lukaku OUT
    Walcott /kane IN.

    Finally did someting right.
    (well sort of)
Not 100% happy with Walcott but have firmino, Haz and siggy so hadn't a whole lot of options.

Eriksen, Walcott, or Siggurdson? Can get 1 of the three.

Eriksen could be a good differential; Theo looked good but ARS have so many options; and Gylfi in form but some tricky fixtures like at Spurs loom.

So instead of doing this for a -4 (Coutinho, Rondon to De Roon, Kane) I actually went this for a -8:
Fuchs, Coutinho, Rondon to Cedric, Phillips, Kane
I thought Fuchs would drop in price but he didn't lol.

    Foster
    Alonso, Cedric, Pieters
    Hazard, Firmino, Phillips, Allen
    Aguero (c), Kane, Costa

    Jaku, Siggy, Holebas, Amat

Next week Phillips becomes Zaha as he has Hull & Phillips has Chelsea. I'll rotate Zaha with Allen from gw15.

    Am I gtg. Thanks.

I'm leaning towards shipping Costa before Kane. Kane and Ibra are the focal points for their teams. Costa is one of 3 guys who can run havoc for Chelsea. Plus, the other two are on pens.

        1. Licious Lizard
          • 12 Years
          9 years, 10 days ago

Yep. Don't really fancy Costa, but I am biased as I think he is a disgusting human being.

Either way I would ship Costa for Kane too. With his next 4 games, he can easily outscore Costa. Also there is the infamous looming 5th yellow 😉

How much value do you have tied up in Costa?

          1. fedolefan
            • 11 Years
            9 years, 10 days ago

I don't have Costa too and brought in Kane. I kinda messed up to be honest and assumed you had Costa Kane. Forgot about Aguero. :P. Been playing around with shipping Kun after Leicester for Pep has destroyed me recently with Sterling and Stones rotations.

Back to Costa, every one in my ML has him and I'm sick of him to be honest. I would like to get him in but I fear I've missed the bus. He'll be 10.8-10.9 next Friday and Ibra is 11.1m. Hence the comparison.

              9 years, 10 days ago

Yeah a lot in my ML have had him the entire season as well. Really been hurting me. Luckily I think Aguero will outscore him long term and hopefully Kane the next 4 game weeks and afterwards Ibra for me.

I feel like we have missed the bus too. He won't be keeping it up in my opinion. But I have tried to get some Chelsea points with Hazard.

    Which one is better ?

    A: Firmino + Walcott (73+71 pts)
    B: Sanchez + Milner (87+62 pts)

B looks weaker, but I'm surprised that this combo gets 5 pts more than A in total.

Also, better in Form of recent weeks
    A: 6.8 + 3.3 = 10.1 / game
    B: 7.5 + 3.5 = 11.0 / game

    Anyway, I think this

    1. Licious Lizard
      • 12 Years
      9 years, 10 days ago

Would also go for B out of those two, but I don't particularly rate A players.

Hazard, Siggy, and de Roon take the other spots.

There should be one LIV mid and 6.7m available if I go with Sanchez. I can't see past Milner. Can?

        1. Licious Lizard
          • 12 Years
          9 years, 10 days ago

I disagree that there should absolutely be one liv mid in there. Can could offer good value, but I highly doubt Liverpool will continue scoring as freely if Coutinho is out for a while and with Lallana still unfit. Also their fixtures aren't as good long term as people make them out to be.

Either go with Milner and hope for lots of pens, Can or other budget mid to save value to upgrade other places. Perhaps upgrade De Roon to better 5th mid and rotate two of Can/Zaha/Chadli/Fer/Matic or other similar priced options.

          Just my two cents 🙂

      Oops.

I think this comparison must be different before this GW that Sanchez just got a brace and Milner converted another PK.

      Point Per Game wise
      A: F+W > 6.1 + 5.9 = 12.0
      B: S+M > 6.7 + 5.6 = 12.3

      I can't decide yet.

        Bench Siggy?

It might come down to - if Cameron is back for Stoke I'll play Allen, if not then Anichebe. Not really thought about benching Siggy.

        Cheers tho.

Leicester are ridiculously bad in defense. May be I'm biased but I've been a Fuchs owner for so long now that it's so sad. Yeah, play Allen if he's playing in an advanced position. Don't think there's much between Siggy and Anichebe but Burnley shipping 4 to Brom means something.

I hear you.. really want to play Anichebe and Allen v Burnley so on paper Siggy looks the one to bench however involved in everything Swans do and on pens do I bench him? Big call.

Having done my transfers this week to beat price changes, I have the following front 8:

    Sanchez - Hazard - Sigurdsson - Redmond - Phillips
    Aguero - Costa - (Anichebe)

Contemplating switching back to 3-4-3 in two weeks' time, with Redmond to de Roon and Anichebe to Austin.

    Worth it?

      Yes imo.

I think Austin offers higher value at 6.7 than Redmond at 6.0... Also on pens. With those fixtures I think he will do well.. And you will probably be benching Anichebe/De Roon every week anyway.

Thanks. The 3-5-2 experiment really needs a fully fit Liverpool midfield to make it worthwhile I think, so it hasn't worked as great as I expected it.

Yeah. I unfortunately never got on board with the 3-5-2, but now I don't see it being a good strategy. Especially if Austin can gain momentum with those tasty fixtures.

Anyone who owns Walker...I'[ve kept him in my team as SPurs have 3 great home fixtures coming up. However, I have 0 confidence in their abilty to keep CS against anyone right now.

IF they concede to Swansea this weekend, I think I may just call it a day and ship him for Alonso in GW15. Would have Cedric and Holebas as 2/3, who have decent/great fixtures short term and could even give Amat a run out if needed. Thoughts?

Considering the same. I don't have any Chelsea defenders. My premiums are Kosc and Vert. Think I will keep Vert through GW17 and maybe ship Kosc for Alonso next week. Cedric looks a great option over the next few.

Who's your 5th defender? In your position, Alonso for Walker looks a good move

Yeah, disappointed with Arsenal defensive returns since I got him in GW8. He's got to go. Chelsea and Southampton are looking like the best defences to own. Evans should be good for GW14 and 16 though!

I think I may have also talked you into holding Walker. His returns have been so disappointing but they've had injuries and Toby is a huge miss. If they don't get a cleanie with Toby back, then yeah, I'll be getting rid too.

I think am holding on to him for a couple more weeks, but mainly coz I need to sell Mustafi worst. Useless.

Cedric in first, and then Walker to Alonso in a couple of weeks.

Have him and Clyne as my premiums and will be selling Clyne and keeping Walker.

In my opinion it's all about Alderweireld. He's due back next weekend and Spurs should be sound at the back again hopefully. IF he comes back on time.

Those fixtures literally could not be better so I think patience will reward with Walker

Not saying their goals will dry up completely. But with a Origi/Sturridge on top (which I am assuming Klopp will try out), I can't see their mids hogging all the goals anymore. Plus their fixtures aren't THAT great. Think Siggy offers better value at almost 2 million less.

I would go for B. Can't see Chelsea keeping a cleanie, so it is only if you think he will get any attacking returns against a semi-leaky City defence. His finishing is awful though.

Kane is like Firmino. They don't look to be doing much and before you know it, Bobby has 15 points and Kane has 13 points. Coutinho on the other hand should be scoring 30 points a game based on how influential he is in games.

Haha yep. That is why I hate watching Kane play. He always looks like a terrible footballer and suddenly he has scored two goals (one of them usually a penalty to be fair). I guess that makes him an excellent striker though.
