With a break in our open to all Fantasy Premier League cup competition during the midweek fixtures, we spend some time this evening to see who has made it through to fifth round, which takes place during Gameweek 17 this coming weekend.

A reminder that, for this latest contest, there are more than £1,000 worth of prizes for UK based entrants courtesy of our partner FanDuel, as well as £350 in Amazon vouchers to the top three managers at the end of the competition.

In addition the highest scoring manager each round wins a £30 FanDuel credit, with community regular Moin earning this prize after his 65 point Gameweek 15 haul. He next faces msq22 in round five.

The next four highest scoring managers in round four win a £10 FanDuel credit. These will be handed out to Pinky Unites, who scored 63, DJDave1979, who scored 61 along with twobitgooner, and BC1, Bashvilla, Hagop, who all hit the 60 point mark.

The highest placed manager left in the competition is 216 ranked Bacuna Matata, who along with Pink Unites, won a £30 FanDuel voucher for the top highest score back in the third round.

The unfortunate manager to face this early frontrunner to win the competition is lowlifegimpe, who is ranked 337,555.

In a closely fought contest, our only remaining Fantasy Football Scout staff representative, TorresMagic, has made it through to round five, after squeezing past Zambhino10 by just a single point.

The moderator has another tough encounter in store when he takes on Smooth Rossi, who at 6,687 in the overall rankings is more than 7,000 places above him.

Other eye catching ties taking place in round five include Funkyav’s clash with Big Phil Soccer Team and Cobberlsnz taking on Bash Villa, who incidentally sent me packing back in the first round.

The fourth round results can be found via this link, while the full fifth round draw can be found here.

Good luck to those still involved and if you would like more information on the schedule and prizes click this link.

Really not sure who to get for Firmino. Every time I sell him he scores.

Also not convinced by Payet and don't really want Eriksen if I've already got Kane...

There's a discussion going on the last page regarding 'cover' and how it's daft to not get a player because you already have a team mate as cover 😉

Lol yeah I did see that

I do believe in cover so I don't want Eriksen.

So I've gone for 3 Chelsea players instead 😎

toughie that. I don't have the budget to make that move, but if I could I'd be sorely tempted.

I think Wenger prefers Walcott for away games with the counter attack threat and he has Everton and Man City both away, so it's tricky to get rid. Great fixtures through to the new year too.

    Foster
    Alonso / Brunt / Cedric
    Hazard / Sanchez / Alli / Phillips
    Kane / Costa / Nacho

    Grant / Can / Valencia / Holebas(manc)

As you can see, any no-shows and I have a big problem, hence the worry over Nacho. I have a FT and he is the only one I want to lose but Origi and Carroll who are the ones I'd want instead are no more likely to start imo.

Stick and hope for the best? 1ft .8m itb

Just following on from the question on the previous page about cover, how do you think about this with regard to doubling up on players?

For example, say Liverpool or Chelsea are scoring for fun and you own one of their top assets like Mane or Costa. Would the ownership of that player affect your decision to get another top player like Coutinho or Costa? Would you refrain because you already had that team covered?

Personally, before Coutinho's injury, I had Cout, Firm, Walcott and Sanchez. Double double. There were a lot of teams for whom I had no cover as a result but each player was scoring well so it worked out pretty well.

If you thought Spurs were going to score well and you already own Kane, would your ownership of Kane make you think "I'd better not get Eriksen as I already have Spurs cover"?

Typing too quickly. Chelsea example would be Hazard/Costa

I don't believe in coverage. Make each decision on its own merit. Eriksen clearly a better choice than Firmino for the next two. Question is, is it worth the transfer in such a busy period.

The only way one player is going to impact another player's points on the same team is through 1 or 2 bonus.
I have triple Chelsea & double Spurs.

I had the same 4 and was flying. 4K rank after GW9. I see no issue with doubling if players are firing

The reasons not to double up are
      - gives you less captaincy options
      - reduces your rotation options
      - can make cups difficult as you are prone to bad individual weeks if the team blanks
      - can make it harder to manage bad fixture swings as more transfers to get them all out.

The reason to double up are
      - they may be the best 2 players with the greatest chance of points
      - you can double down on strong fixtures.

Personally im all in favour as long as i have planned through the potential issues from the first list.

The captaincy point is interesting. I guess for me, I would expect to always have at least two or three attacking players I'd be happy to give the captaincy. With the double double, it would be worth checking to see how each team's fixtures rotates with the other

Good that you came up with an example. No, if I had Kane, it would not interfere with my decision on whether or not to get Eriksen. But if there was another player like Eriksen with the same form, same ease of fixtures, same club form but different club, I would go for that player instead. Why not go for the one from a different club? It's just safer.

How often does it occur that all else is equal? I'd imagine that would be exceptionally rare

Take Eriksen vs Payet for example, and say you already have Kane and no one from West Ham. Both face Burnley and Hull at home in the next two. We know that Payet is a much better player than Eriksen. But Eriksen plays for a much better team. So in terms of points potential, it is close and debatable and in the end I would go for who I personally prefer more. But I wouldn't really let the fact that Payet costs 0.8 more get in the way.

Yeah, that kinda proves my point. The playing field is not equal between those two. Short term, fixtures are the same. Longer term, Payet's fixtures are a bit better. Payet costs more and is a better player in a worse team. All of this stuff is what the decision is based upon

            1. Cok3y5murf
              • 9 Years

Agreed, but the fact that Payet is from a different club will slightly make me lean towards him ;). Not sure who I'd end up getting though.

I've gone with Payet over Eriksen. Partly because he did well for me when i owned him last season while Eriksen was terrible when I owned him last season.

This is not a good reason, I know, mainly because West Ham have regressed a lot this year. But these little biases affect the gut feeling for a decision a lot when it's a close call between two players

I understand cover because football is unpredictable and u Never know when they Blank.
If u go eriksen+kane...AND...Hull puts up a Def workshop (very unlikely in thruth) but it might happen and u come empty. Better payet+kane. Both heavily involved

But Hull might then do another defensive masterclass to scupper Payet the next week. We're dealing in probabilities not certainties, and based on the evidence we have so far this season, Hull's defence is pretty poor

In my post I stated that cover may be an illusion, but I also believe you have to 'cover' the obvious. If indiviuals are looking fantastic in a team that's in form, why not go for maximum cover. Hence I have Costa, Hazard and Alonso in my team for now.

      1. Sharpe Shuffle
        • 10 Years

In this case, the term 'cover' is the problem. I would argue that you're picking those players because of their potential to score points as individuals not because they wear a Chelsea shirt (otherwise Courtois and Kante would work equally well, right?).

I agree btw. Triple up on a team that's smashing it is a wonderful thing

        1. jia you
          • 9 Years

Ha, yes the term cover can be used in many ways! Yes, it's about picking who you think are the best individuals not thinking I will get Can for LIV cover or Matic for CHE cover, or take a chance on Son as I have no Spurs, etc.
The big issue I have on here is when posters suggest 'get X but if you have such a player, get Y'
eg. you need to get Eriksen in but if you have Kane, get Payet, etc etc.
