Arsenal’s old frailties are exposed by two Everton crossed balls, while Bournemouth’s blossoming backline enjoy another set of returns as Leicester City’s dire away form continues at the Vitality Stadium.

Here’s the Stock Check following Tuesday’s pair of matches…

On the Rise

Nathan Ake & Adam Smith
Retained at the heart of the Bournemouth defence at home to Leicester, Ake strengthened his hold on a starting berth, forcing Eddie Howe to re-structure and push Adam Smith into a midfield role.

With Junior Stanislas sidelined, Smith may continue in that advanced position to offer the optimum route into a blossoming Cherries backline.

However, Ake, at 0.5 cheaper, is arguably now the go-to option, even over both Charlie Daniels and Steve Cook, who sit at the very top of the FPL rankings for value among defenders.

A major threat at set-pieces with two goals to his name in just five starts, Ake is a 4.3 option that warrants starts once the fixtures brighten from Gameweek 21.

Seamus Coleman & Leighton Baines
Renowned for their attacking qualities, the pair of Toffees full-backs both fetched returns as Everton rallied to earn the points against Arsenal.

Combining for the equalising goal, Coleman’s header marked his third strike of the season, taking him level with West Brom’s Gareth McAuley. Meanwhile, Baines’ cross provided him with just a second assist of the campaign.

Neither have convinced as Fantasy assets over the season, with the Merseysiders’ defensive form so erratic after a promising start under Ronald Koeman.

While Coleman offers obvious appeal, at 5.5, his price tag remains a major obstacle with Everton’s current crop of fixtures.

Assigned spot-kicks, Baines could yet prove an attractive option but, again, we will need to see the schedule improve before his 5.3 valuation becomes more palatable.

An obliging run in mid-January may yet see the pair edge onto the radar, particularly if Koeman has made further progress with his defence by that point.

In Decline

Theo Walcott
Having been named in the starting line-up, it appeared that Walcott was poised to rise in stock given his apparent “security of start”. However, he was hooked around the 70-minute mark for the third time in four Gameweeks, as Wenger continues to use Olivier Giroud from the bench.

The winger was again ineffectual away from home but, once more, Arsenal themselves were unconvincing having surrendered control after dominating the opening 20 minutes.

Initially priced at 7.5, Walcott still represents value but seems reliant on his home form. He has now scored just once in seven away trips, while Alexis Sanchez has bagged nine of his 12 goals on the road.

However, with strong fixtures to come – including Emirates encounters with West Brom and Crystal Palace – Walcott remains firmly in our sights.

Gabriel
Another “value” option in the Gunners line-up suffered a dent as Arsene Wenger’s side surrendered the three points, exposed in the air from crosses for both goals.

At just 4.8, the Brazilian appears to offer an opportunity as a short-term investment, but the Arsenal defence has now returned just a single shut-out in nine.

Favourable fixtures to follow on from the Gameweek 17 trip to City promise an upturn in fortunes but, having seen Arsenal’s frailties exploited by Everton, the likes of West Brom and Palace will have gained plenty of encouragement for their forthcoming Emirates visits.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'm kind of glad that I've captained Kane over Costa now, impossible to tell but surely Haz being out will/could affect his returns?

Hopefully Hazard absence doesn't affect Costa positively.
Chelsea has a big squad and I reckon Willian can be better than Hazard on his days.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Hazard owners - who comes in for you now the Belgian is out?

Does this show the need for a stronger bench over Christmas? Who are you looking to draft in as reliable bench fodder?

I think it's always important to have a strong bench over xmas, but this doesn't prove that as injuries/knocks can happen to anyone at any time.

Anichebe comes in, better than 0 points I guess, unless of course he's also injured which then it'll be Capoue.

Not sure what is considered reliable at a certain price point, for example Ake is 4.3 and just scored 8 points.

Fairly ok with that. Capoue will be the most popular one to come in.

      Fletcher coming in for Hazard.

I'm going 3-5-2 next week to have the following front 8:
      Hazard / Sanchez / Siggy / Lallana / Antonio
      Kane / Ibra / Anichebe

I currently have Firmino and Fletcher. Downgrading the former gives me a chance of getting Alderweireld / Alonso / Azpilicueta, etc.

      Defoe.

This is where my presumption that Walcott would be rested comes home to roast.

I didn't have to keep Stones but having him and Defoe in for the GW looks okay, even though I'm going to lose Hazard.

Stones may well be dropped, however, in which case in comes Anichebe for the twin Sunderland threat.

Still a major blow, though. Hazard needed to impress and return to hold his stock from slipping.

I'm thinking of reverting back to 352 with Anichebe as my thrid striker. front 8 would be as follows:

      Sanchez-Hazard-Payet-Siggy-Boufal/Lallana
      Kane-Costa-Anichebe

(Grant, Pickford, Amat, Aké, Evans, Holebas, Alonso)
FYI, this is not yet my team so moght need to downgrade Holebas too, havent checked; but might also downgrade Payet if he does SFA in the next two

Hazard & Can to be covered by Cedric & De Roon. Not ideal but not a disaster.

As for Xmas etc. I think Amat goes to Ake then it's all about the 4th/5th mid.

Much as was said on the Scoutcast it's about finding that Budget mid that hits a bit of form.
2 options are to upgrade De Roon to 5.8m and have Can as 5th mid or upgrade Can to 6.4m and leave De Roon as 5th mid.
ATM not a huge amount of choice based on form - basically Zaha, Phillips or Ox - for 4th mids so probably upgrading De Roon and having Can as a rotating 4th/5th maybe best option.

Anichebe coming in; could be worse.

Currently I'm rotating Anichebe/Fer and Amat/Evans/Cholevas in my bench. Nothing fancy, but they'll do, I think.

Strong bench, no. Active bench, yes. I'll have De Roon, and this is precisely the sort of game he's there for. I'd rather maximise starting XI value but make sure I have 5 playing defenders, so I'll be getting Ake in for the long-dormant Kingsley at long last.

I've gone the whole Pulis on my bench, all being fit. Seem as good as any. Evans and Fletcher have served me well when needed. Foster there too, and Amat bringing up the rear as 4.0m fodder who actually plays. As good as you need I think.

      Foster (4.5) Fletcher (4.5) Evans (4.5) Amat (4.0)

Although I'm expecting Holebas and Amat to also join the party as I did some very good prep last week to get a great bench for this period by upgrading Whelan to Can.. then Can goes and gets injured and puts it all to shame.

Add Lovren to it and Ill be luck to get 11 out

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 17

Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will then be selected at random shortly after the deadline of 10am tomorrow (Thursday) and then be asked to submit their XI by Friday 2pm by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 84m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article on Tuesday, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual the day before the first match of the Gameweek.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

He's coming in for Hazard anyway.

We did deliberately go a bit over the top with Stones and Costa for entertainment value. Was fun though.

I know that he hasn't scouted his players and fixtures, because he isn't that interested.

Key is his WC team. Ended up with the best budget picks just like that. Takes no hits. Meanwhile I have been taking hits to build a super-team and Zaha/Capoue goes crazy. And Hazard misses out for me, not the first time that has happened for me.

Still not lucky though surely. Luck is leaving a team for weeks on end and getting lucky vice captain hauls, etc.

Time spent does not necessarily mean he's fortunate. maybe he's just very efficient. As you say amazing budget picks, so good for him.

Not serious, Howe said he's 'alright' after the game last night.

He's my 3rd, hoping he plays this weekend and that last night's benching was done to rest him. Can't think of a real replacement right now.
