Suspensions

‘Tis the season for much of the male population to start planning their last-minute trip to Boots to get some perfume on Christmas Eve.

Gameweek 16’s referees were clearly in the same distracted mode as they produced little disciplinary drama from two nights of midweek action.

Just the one man fell from the Suspension Tightrope, Oriol Romeu’s (4.5) booking versus Stoke meaning he misses a derby date with Bournemouth on Sunday.

In the same fixture, Marko Arnautovic (7.2) put in a 23-minute shift most notable for a studs-up liaison with Sofiane Boufal’s thigh, thus earning him a three-match suspension. He’ll now miss Stoke’s final knockings of 2016 – Leicester at home and trips to Liverpool and Chelsea.

Neither player is well owned, however – the former at 0.5% and the latter 0.8%.

They are joined on the sidelines by the 4% owned Phil Jagielka (4.9), who is set to miss the Merseyside derby after collecting two yellows in Everton’s win over Arsenal.

Of more concern for nearly all of us is the burgeoning Chelsea contingent on the rope.

With the festive schedule traditionally a time for frequent rounds of line-up chicken, having no fewer than four well-owned Chelsea assets one caution away from suspension adds even more uncertainty to a time stuffed full of it already. N’Golo Kante (4.7), Nemanja Matic (5.1), Diego Costa (10.9) and David Luiz (6.1) are the men in question.

We also believe that Pedro (7.2) is also on four yellows, though this has yet to be confirmed by the FA website – we’re seeking clarification from them before adding him to the Tightrope widget.

The Spaniard has been booked three times in the league – his last one was at Sunderland last night – but according to the BBC match reports, he was also cautioned in the Blues’ EFL Cup win over Bristol Rovers.

Chelsea’s festive fixtures involve Palace away and Bournemouth and Stoke at home before the New Year card amnesty. With Eden Hazard (10.5) carrying a knock that kept him out of Wednesday’s win at the Stadium of Light, further doubts over the league leaders’ midfield make-up for those juicy matches is the last thing we need.

A suitably bulging pre-Christmas tightrope also includes: Kyle Walker (6.1); Victor Wanyama (4.8); Jan Vertonghen (5.7); Harry Arter (5.0); Dan Gosling (4.7); Antonio Barragan (4.5); Adam Clayton (4.3); James McArthur (5.0); Aleksandar Kolarov (5.8); Robert Huth (4.9); Lynden Gooch (4.3); Ryan Shawcross (4.9); Billy Jones (4.4); Kyle Naughton (4.5); Dean Marney (4.5); Matthew Lowton (4.5); Steven Pienaar (4.9), Christian Fuchs (5.3); Jordi Amat (4.1); Miguel Britos (4.4) and Michail Antonio (6.7).

Back from one-match midweek suspensions are Antonio Valencia (5.4), Didier Ndong (4.8), Jason Puncheon (5.2), Danny Simpson (4.9), and Craig Dawson (4.8), while Dieumerci Mbokani (5.5) is finally available again after completing a three-stretch for using his head in an EFL Cup tie in entirely the wrong fashion.

The long-term lags now number just two – Man City pair Sergio Aguero (13.0), who has two more matches to miss for his Luiz lunge, and Fernandinho (5.4), who will sit out Gameweek 17 before ticking a Boxing Day trip to Hull from his sporting bucket list.

The Men In Black

It was a quiet Gameweek for the whistle-blowers, although Bobby Madley awarded his sixth spot-kick of the season to bump up his penalties per game average to 0.46.

And yet it could have been so much louder if Craig Pawson hadn’t taken the night off in the Palace v Man United match, missing the chance to blow for a penalty and send off Marcos Rojo (5.2) in an otherwise exemplary performance that involved just the two controversial offside decisions.

That must have cost you greatly though. Kane's amazing run and Alli's value...

Got roughly 40k OR, would have been higher if my friend didn't mess with my team GW37 and take hits to buy injured players

Still happy with that rank as it was my first season, but I can only imagine how much better I could have got if I had Kane/Alli

Still a very good first season result, but always annoying, when you know it could have been better.
Got around 300K in my first season.

a 36 point hit?!?! in GW 38?!?! I get that you were probably fighting off issues after the DGW in gw37, but what happened?? ?

I think you can go without any player as long as the balance of your team is good. I didn't have Vardy at all last season.

            • 13 Years
            9 years, 1 month ago

Of course you can do well without any player. But perhaps you could have done better having a 5m/5.5m midfielder, who scored 10 goals and 12 assists. Or with Vardy who scored 24 goals and 8 assists at a ridiculous value.

Haha you definitely would!!! Congratulations on the amazing OR...

You obviously made it work, but for us mere mortals the likes of Vardy, Mahrez and Alli were exceptional last year 🙂

I had Mahrez from GW1 and kept all season so that helped a lot! Ighalo also covered the lack of Vardy quite well for a while.

Yeah there were a lot of value picks. Leicester defenders for a spell. Ighalo and Deeney too. Antonio had his spell. And of course the best pick of them all, Mahrez.

Congrats once again! I ended up on 5441 OR and I am still angry that I didn't reach 5K OR after having been up to 3K after GW 37...

Thanks. That's still a great rank for you last season but I can understand the disappointment of missing the top 5k. Nailing the TC and BB in the DGW's got me up there. Hopefully we will have some good DGW'S again this season 🙂

Yeah that is really important. Got over 250+ points combined in those 2 weeks and think I did the planning pretty well. OR of 60K in GW 30, where I really starting planning transfer and my only red arrow was in Gw 38.
It was a lot of fun planning your tactic last year...!

I love the thought of Carroll against Hull but the fact that he only gathered 3bps in 82 mins against Burnley makes me think any potential haul maybe a while away. I see him scrapping for 70 mins with Dawson and maybe winning a pen, but as likely getting booked.

So...keeping Nacho. I bought him for 4 games. One of them was Hull. May as well see it through. And if he doesn't play at all there's always Francis and Philips on the pine ready to step in.

    A Save FT
    B Nacho to Carroll

I'm keeping him for the 4 games as well! Using FT to get rid of Firmino. Wouldn't know who to replace him for....will probably go for a cheap striker & go 3-5-2 when I get rid!

Ok, so normally I'm something of a lurker here, picking up on all the nugget's of good insight FFS and the Community put down. But this week a consensus has emerged which has me completely baffled.

The consensus very much seems to be:
    a) that Firmino's gone completely off the boil and needs to be sold, and
    b) it's unfortunate that Hazard missed the last game but he is an excellent player who people should hold on to.

Yet using the comparison tool to compare them, I note there's really not much between them over the last 4 matches. If anything the apparent Coutinho-less dreck that is the current Firmino has slightly better stats than Hazard, whose shooting stats in particular are appalling. And that's irrespective of price and Hazard's 'injury.' It appears to me that Hazard's late counterattacking goal against a desperate City is disguising the fact that he's been just as ropey as Firmino recently.

Can anyone shed some light on this apparent mismatch in opinion. Is it fixtures? Are people worried about what he *could* do? Because I can't think of an argument for getting rid of Firmino that doesn't equally apply to Hazard.

Chelsea have good fixtures coming up!
Hazard is higher owned so if he hauls & you don't have him it realy hurts your rank. Theres not that fear factor with firm who can be replaced with lallana but you cant replace hazard with pedro/willian/fabregas

At the end of the day, Firmino has failed to put points on the board and Hazard, rather luckily as you suggest, has.

Hazard: higher owned (less risk), penalties, better fixtures, better player outside of stats.

Good insight and all true, but overlooks the fact that Hazard is playing in an imperious team with great fixtures, and therefore remains more likely than Firm to score points.

I think he has been playing in an imperious team, with admittedly mixed fixtures, and it hasn't recently translated into any indications that a sustained haul of points is likely. I don't necessarily argue Firmino's more likely to score currently, but that I am to some extent equally dubious about both of them.

I accept however that Hazard's form could turn, and he can be deadly. He has in fact, had an almost schizophrenic season: 3 matches of great states, 4 of rubbish stats, 4 of simply outstanding stats, and now another 4 rubbish. I just question the extent to which he is entrenched in people's teams as 'unmoveable'.

I think there is a big difference if you have watched some of the games to be honest.

That hints perhaps at a difference in philosophy between us. I use the stats to tell me if my eye might have been tricked while watching the games. Perhaps you use your eye to tell you if the stats might be a trick.

So many factors here. First Hazard. He is the anti-alexis. Subtle, creative, team player. He is most dangerous with time and space and a defensive line that invites him forward. In games where he pressured and swarmed he plays efficiently and selfless. Quick ball movement to expose gaps. Tottenham are good enough to take the game to chelsea and won't sit back and defend. Away games he doesn't get given much time and space in general either. West brom at home on paper is a game where he'll be probing around the box with time and space. Except tactically Chelsea's system wasn't effective.
I use statistics very sparingly. Certain ones can be insightful as part of the bigger picture

I accept that these factors make Hazard an excellent real life player, and also a very good fantasy player. But I would expect the things a player does which will (or should) lead to goals (and points) being scored to show up in shots taken and chances created.Ideally I'd used individual xG to analyse this, but in the absence of a source of that, the these stats are the best tool available. There may well be a justification for Hazard's non performance in the last four games. The next two should tell.

Equally I'd question the wisdom of having a player that expensive who as you say cannot be relied upon to do well away from home. I don't doubt he'll be near the top of the points standings by season's end, but in the current environment of multiple high scoring expensive players, I can justify excluding Hazard.

He is worth his price because he is so consistent. He is fine away. Just not explosive as at home. Though home/away is too simplistic. He is good against teams that pressure and attack. He is good against teams that stay organised. Just more explosive in the latter. Last 4 games I wouldn't expect explosiveness. Next 3 I do.
Of course you can sell him. I'm not arguing against that. Just showing why his lack of statistical dominance recently isn't surprising or concerning

Ibra will produce very well over the kind fixtures imo. Lallana good value pick, although I would prefer Siggy.
Eriksen won't continue this streak and fixtures become mixed, Mane of course a good pick, but of to AFCON in a couple of GWs.
