The high cost of excelling in Fantasy Premier League was laid bare by our community scribes this week, who take a look at the contrasting values of this year’s and 2015/16’s best players.

Our hot topics go in search of the secrets of success this season and also assess whether our frontlines are set for a revamp when Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero returns from suspension over the festive fixture schedule.

Players with the highest involvement in their respective team’s goals are the focus of our Members Table round-up, while we also find out who has achieved a strong return on investment at the summit of our community leagues.

The Community Articles

FPL managers were spoiled last season, with budget picks like Jamie Vardy, Dele Alli and Riyad Mahrez providing the game with consistent performers and value.

According to TM245’s latest community article, 2016/17 couldn’t be more different. This provides a comparison between 2015/16 and this season’s FPL dream teams to reveal some startling contrasts in terms of price and ability to produce returns over a long period.

Good strikers are particularly pricey this time around, but Bobby F has come up with a strategy to help ensure you can own all the heavy-hitters in attack, although admittedly not at the same time.

At least there is still saving to be made between the sticks this time around, says Bowstring the Carp. His analysis of the best cheap goalkeeper combinations from now until the end of the season will be particularly useful to those considering using their second wildcard as soon as it becomes available next month.

There’s further value for those who feel like taking a risk with the captaincy in Gameweek 18, according to YMA‘s latest look at the best armband options based on form, fixtures and clean sheet odds.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Swift spotting of the fluctuating form of premium players and careful maneuvering in a volatile transfer market are among the key strategies to emerge from our discussion on the secret of success in 2016/17.

For Pochetinno, overthinking has been a major barrier to getting the better of this season, as he recounted how many points have been lost through unfounded fears around suspensions and international commitments.

Favouring form over fixtures is another successful strategy, according to our Rough with the Smooth look back at your Gameweek 18 performances. This features some justifiably smug stories for those who decided that Harry Kane was not captaincy material against a travel-sick Burnley side last weekend.

The Spurs’ striker’s failure to score against the Clarets will have dented many Fantasy managers’ armband average for the season. To see how good you are at selecting such sources of double points Fusen has relaunched his FPL Statistico tool to offer a wealth of information about your team’s successes and failures. This is a must see.

Looking ahead to the festive fixtures, we canvassed your views on which premium attackers to draft in, while later in the week we also asked whether you will be looking to draft Sergio Aguero back as soon as his suspension ends in Gameweek 19.

Diego Costa is among other forwards the Manchester City player has to compete against. But KTK Interista wonders whether Chelsea’s 3-4-3 formation is focusing increasingly on defence and leaving their attackers unable to muster meaningful attacking returns.

Elsewhere, mid-price forwards also came under discussion when Mr Maverick sparked a debate on whether Crystal Palace’s Christian Benteke (7.7) is worth the extra outlay over Salomon Rondon (6.6).

Finally, Athletico Timbo has launched what we hope will be a regular feature where he assesses the latest transfer moves and the wisdom behind them.

The Members Tables

Columbo’s latest table takes a look at those who are most involved in their side’s goals over the last four Gameweeks.

For those looking to get ahead of the curve this Christmas my goals imminent table has a new collection of players on the cusp of a points haul.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

In TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing the safety score was 36, which saw 116 players depart and 1124 remain.

Meanwhile, Torres Magic takes the Christmas number one slot in the FFS Moderators and Contributors league, two points ahead of long-term leader Facer.

There was good news for another of our moderators team, Spencer, who is among those to progress to the knockout stages in JaffacliciousUEFA Champions League tournament.

Raul Seleccion continues to top Red Lightning’s Top 10k Any Season mini-league.

Red Lightning’s January to May mini league (1441-820) is available for entries, ahead of Gameweek 20’s start. More than 150 teams have entered so far.

In my Millionaires Club, for those managers with a rank below the one million mark in Gameweek 12, Krak Krak is in top spot.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round Ups please email me a brief summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Anything worth a hit? 0 ITB

    Heaton (Pickford)
    Alonso-Van Dijk-Walker-Amat (Smith)
    Sanchez-Hazard-Siggy-Zaha (Hojberg)
    Ibra-Carroll (Costa)

Was thinking of doing hojberg to de roon in case amat gets dropped?

Who do you prefer over the next 3?

    A) Defoe (mun, bur, LIV)
    B) Benteke (wat, ars, SWA)

I have exact money for Defoe to Benteke but worried about gw19 rotation for Tekkers.

Had to disappear...but wanted to catch a comment. @Netley Luca.

I agree completely about some wingers becoming the new striker partnership.

Wally, Hazard, Sanchez and co take up an avg position beyond the striker, and close to the centre, and have been doing it for several years now. They are the the better options to the "role in the hole" of the traditional strike partner.

I did a few articles on it a couple of years ago highlighting the pts for mids each week who's avg position was beyond the striker. It's an eye opener if you give it a go.

Yep inside forwards are everywhere now. Barca played a huge part in that.
Traditional wingers are more rare than traditional #9's now.
The way modern strikers play they leave space for inside forwards rather than occupy the space so wingers can cross to them.
Avg position maps kinda pointless though

It gives you an insight into which players do it on a regular basis. I remember a few years ago spotting Snodders doing it regularly for Norwich and got a few pts from it.

I don't think we look at it enough. I've gone with a cheeky punt on Silva who's had some good positions since Aguero's been out...and delivered pts in all three...http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/matches/855335/

Interesting. Maybe I'm wrong here, but aren't they liable to be completely misleading about where a player is actually playing?
Extreme example, if a player spent 50% of the game on the left wing and 50% on the right wing then his average position is in the middle, which couldn't be more wrong.
I am a total dumb arse with anything related to maths though so I'm probably missing the trick here.
I'm opposite to many on here as I rarely use statistics. I do like reading others methods though. Certainly insights to be had when used correctly, but I reckon many use wrong and misleading statistics that bring them to conclusions opposite to what I get from watching the game.
I like the cheeky Silva punt btw. He's been at his absolute best at times this season. Seems to be taking to Pep's methods really well.

He'll be a good pick for us but a poor transfer for Everton....he simply doesn't do the defensive work of some of the better players these days. Same with Bolasie...you'd think they'd learn from that.

      Really poor midfield.
Take some weight out of defence unless you want to play 4 back there every week.

Have .5 to get Coutinho for Walcott once he's back but feel like there aren't any good midfielders under 7mil bar Phillips & Zaha, so decided to hopefully bank at least 3 CS a week by investing in the Defence & hope Walcott & Sanchez get the goals/assits from the Midfield as well as the odd goal/assist from Zaha & Phillips who will most likely be rotated based on fixtures.

Good evening and seasons greetings all,

Can I please get some advice on if this transfer is worth a 4 point hit (thanks in advance):

I am literally stumped as to what to do with my team this week

2 ft and 0.0 in bank

    Heaton, Robinson
    Amat, Azpilicueta, McAuley, Pieters, Friend
    Hazard, Sanchez, Eriksen, Payet, Amrabat
    Costa, Lukaku, Iheanacho

I am keeping Costa as had him since gwk 3
Have a plethora of transfer thoughts, please tell me what is best!
    A) Iheanacho > Llorente (save 2 ft)
    B) Lukaku and Amrabat> Llorente and Walcott
    C) Lukaku and McAuley> Llorente and Valencia (will enable me to change Iheanacho to Benteke next wk)
    D) Please tell me, cheers

Call me mental but I'm considering this:

    Forster
    Walker - Azpi - Luiz - Alonso - Brunt
    Alexis - KDB - Eriksen - Siggy
    Ibra

    Pickford, De Roon, Dio, Anichebe

Could even downgrade Luiz to Valencia and Eriksen > Haz to get 4 big hitters.

Just don't see the point of 4th, 5th mids and 3rd strikers around 6m. The premium defenders will over the course of the season almost always outscore offensive players around the same price category.

Will be on a WC Monday afternoon. Really want 3 Chelsea as they are only team with significant rest between all 3 games and hence won't rotate.

Might go down the Haz route.

Very good. Great stats team for the mids so it's kinda playing pure fantasy of it's kind.
(KDB has hit the post twice lately...a couple of inches the other way and he's be right up there with the very best and we'd be all over him vs Hull)

Two of those players (Eriksen and Siggy) are long term picks that fall in and out of the pts. They both will end up high on the pts with very high stats but they're not just for a week or two. Pick them and keep them.

It's a simple question to a difficult dilemma.
I want to do Haz + Defoe > Lallana + Costa -4 next week.
BUT to do that I need to find .1 which means make it a -8 or shift someone this week for money.

Mourinho on Zlatan, "Normally top scorers around the world take penalties but he doesn't."

Think people have taken this comment literally. I think Zlatan is United's primary penalty taker but Jose is saying to be top goalscorer in the League the player often needs a boost of taking penalties that his team receive but that because United don't get penalties Zlatan doesn't receive that boost but he is good enough to be top goalscorer anyway

A, The majority of Eriksen shots are speculative efforts from issue the box with very little chance of going in. He does have excellent assist potential but Walcott looks great value at his price
