The high cost of excelling in Fantasy Premier League was laid bare by our community scribes this week, who take a look at the contrasting values of this year’s and 2015/16’s best players.

Our hot topics go in search of the secrets of success this season and also assess whether our frontlines are set for a revamp when Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero returns from suspension over the festive fixture schedule.

Players with the highest involvement in their respective team’s goals are the focus of our Members Table round-up, while we also find out who has achieved a strong return on investment at the summit of our community leagues.

The Community Articles

FPL managers were spoiled last season, with budget picks like Jamie Vardy, Dele Alli and Riyad Mahrez providing the game with consistent performers and value.

According to TM245’s latest community article, 2016/17 couldn’t be more different. This provides a comparison between 2015/16 and this season’s FPL dream teams to reveal some startling contrasts in terms of price and ability to produce returns over a long period.

Good strikers are particularly pricey this time around, but Bobby F has come up with a strategy to help ensure you can own all the heavy-hitters in attack, although admittedly not at the same time.

At least there is still saving to be made between the sticks this time around, says Bowstring the Carp. His analysis of the best cheap goalkeeper combinations from now until the end of the season will be particularly useful to those considering using their second wildcard as soon as it becomes available next month.

There’s further value for those who feel like taking a risk with the captaincy in Gameweek 18, according to YMA‘s latest look at the best armband options based on form, fixtures and clean sheet odds.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Swift spotting of the fluctuating form of premium players and careful maneuvering in a volatile transfer market are among the key strategies to emerge from our discussion on the secret of success in 2016/17.

For Pochetinno, overthinking has been a major barrier to getting the better of this season, as he recounted how many points have been lost through unfounded fears around suspensions and international commitments.

Favouring form over fixtures is another successful strategy, according to our Rough with the Smooth look back at your Gameweek 18 performances. This features some justifiably smug stories for those who decided that Harry Kane was not captaincy material against a travel-sick Burnley side last weekend.

The Spurs’ striker’s failure to score against the Clarets will have dented many Fantasy managers’ armband average for the season. To see how good you are at selecting such sources of double points Fusen has relaunched his FPL Statistico tool to offer a wealth of information about your team’s successes and failures. This is a must see.

Looking ahead to the festive fixtures, we canvassed your views on which premium attackers to draft in, while later in the week we also asked whether you will be looking to draft Sergio Aguero back as soon as his suspension ends in Gameweek 19.

Diego Costa is among other forwards the Manchester City player has to compete against. But KTK Interista wonders whether Chelsea’s 3-4-3 formation is focusing increasingly on defence and leaving their attackers unable to muster meaningful attacking returns.

Elsewhere, mid-price forwards also came under discussion when Mr Maverick sparked a debate on whether Crystal Palace’s Christian Benteke (7.7) is worth the extra outlay over Salomon Rondon (6.6).

Finally, Athletico Timbo has launched what we hope will be a regular feature where he assesses the latest transfer moves and the wisdom behind them.

The Members Tables

Columbo’s latest table takes a look at those who are most involved in their side’s goals over the last four Gameweeks.

For those looking to get ahead of the curve this Christmas my goals imminent table has a new collection of players on the cusp of a points haul.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

In TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing the safety score was 36, which saw 116 players depart and 1124 remain.

Meanwhile, Torres Magic takes the Christmas number one slot in the FFS Moderators and Contributors league, two points ahead of long-term leader Facer.

There was good news for another of our moderators team, Spencer, who is among those to progress to the knockout stages in JaffacliciousUEFA Champions League tournament.

Raul Seleccion continues to top Red Lightning’s Top 10k Any Season mini-league.

Red Lightning’s January to May mini league (1441-820) is available for entries, ahead of Gameweek 20’s start. More than 150 teams have entered so far.

In my Millionaires Club, for those managers with a rank below the one million mark in Gameweek 12, Krak Krak is in top spot.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round Ups please email me a brief summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Thanks once I sold Hazard and Sanchez in gw7 I said won't go back. Sanchez 11.9m to much for a mid I reckon if you get 3 Arsenal which I'm looking to get in Bellerin Walcott Ozil I should be fine. Costa covers hazards points along with Alonso attack and CS.

It's a steady team where you could very well grab 1 assist/goal of each of them, but without the madness of a Sánchez/Hazard to up your OR.

Fantasy not about having the same players it's about taking a punt along with a balanced team. If we all had the same players then we might as well give up trying to beat the previous last season rank

Let your ML leader worry about your team and pick your own captain. Not decided yet but thinking Hazard home to a leaky Bournemouth playing much more attacking in Costa's absence. Zlatan's form is excellent. But Moyes will have a fleet of buses in front of an excellent Pickford chomping at the bit to try and ruin United's Boxing Day. Zlatan's class will probably win the day but could be encouraged into disciplinary difficulty.

Just played my wildcard (ranking - 70,000ish)
    Courtouis (Jaku)
    Baines Jones Holebas (Chambers, Pieters)
De Bruyne, Hazard, Sigurdson, Walcott (Zaha)
    Ibra, Gray, Origi

    Thoughts?

I fancy Gray to get a couple of goals over New Years. Looking at bringing Brunt, Lukaku and Lallana in soon.

100.3 with 0.7 in the bank. Probably due to taking too many punts along the way. Also just transferred out Eriksen, Mane and Anichibe (decent rises).

Wish I'd signed Sanchez but gonna trust in Theo.

It is interesting to know as I have always wondered about taking hits for TV. mine is 106.2 but took 56 points in hits to get there. Fairly fortunate in my ranking (42k) and getting Costa and Sanchez early. Holding Costa for that very reason. How does your TV compare in your mini leagues? (The reason I take hits actually)

You will get much better value from Alonso/Azpi + Heaton then you ever will from Courtois + 4.5. Don't fancy KDB justifies his huge price tag, Sanchez much more worthy. Zaha about to run to Africa, but could earn his time for now. Interesting choices, good luck to you.

As above then, some analysis of price changes, this season so far. I don't have previous years to compare to unfortunately.
These were the bits I found most interesting.

1640 price changes, 78% have been price falls.

There have been almost as many price changes at the first opportunity after the GW deadline as there have been at the last chance before it.
22% of price changes have happened in the last change before deadline, 21% in the first changes after the deadline.

Most price changes in a gameweek were after GW 2 deadline (184) and after GW 5 deadline (179).
We've only had 100 price changes in a GW once since GW8, with 52 the lowest when we had the 3-day turnaround between GWs 15 and 16.
That was the only time there was a significant correlation between number of price changes and the number of days between deadlines.

The GW average score didn't have any obvious impact on the number of changes. I thought it would, so I might look instead at highest gameweek scorers and % ownership as drivers instead.

Wildcards were most used after GWs 3 and 5 deadlines (34% of all wildcards were used in one of those weeks - FPL Discovery). There was a noticeable spike in price fallers in those weeks (101 and 153), with just 78 and 74 fallers recorded in GWs 4 and 6.

TLDR - Price fallers and losing value seem a bigger concern than missing out on risers.
It may have always been thus.

Your last sentence is the key one. As a rule of thumb I took definite price drops in my side and passed it to definite risers. My early wildcard was specifivcally aimed at this and I took chances in making early tfr's.

78% price falls because a lot of pre season template teams had the Silvas, Mkhitaryan's, Ivanovich's and more. Wouldn't mind that, have dropped .3 off Costa but that ain't a concern.

Agreed, plus the increase in early transfers many of them resulting in hits being taken by managers trying to get the hot players before they go up in price. Also lost .3 but not worried about it, team value still at 105.0 atm. So far I have been able to make as much as I lose which makes it easier to hold players that are losing value as in Costa's case. I won't be surprised to see some heavy hitters losing value from people freeing up funds to get Aguero back in.

I'm hoping some options will emerge on the second half of the season to help those without a great team value. E.g. When Siggy first joined Seansea at 5m, when Jonny Evans became a regular for half a season at Man Utd due to injuries and when James McClean broke through at Sunderland.

Very poor advice? Siggy was shown to be the number one pick in the recent article, for those who actually have the balls to back it. Haz and Ibra statement is factual, not advice. And West Ham have had a disastrous season, largely due to an underperforming Payet who shouldn't be on anyone's radar at his price. The three defenders he has to play are perfectly good options, but Amat and Love as backup, particularly thru the festive season, would be lucky to garner one point off the bench.

I have Siggy and I'm not going to armband him, but I'm certainly happy to have him. West Ham's defence has been suspect for years, they go thru periods of solidarity, and longer periods of shambles. Swansea have had an even worse season but they have shown that they can score, just maybe not reliably. I think Siggy has a much better chance of getting something than Payet this week.

west ham are not having a disastrous season due to payet mate

payet has created the most goalscoring opportunities of any player in the top 5 leagues ....
its not his fault that his teammates are not up for it

in a side that is performing so badly that is just magnificent

agree there are better options than payet in fpl

And bear in mind that they have lacked a striker worth the name for much of the season. Carroll may not be to everyone's taste but he's well capable of getting his napper on a Payet cross.

Payet may not be a keeper but I sure as hell wouldn't remove him before a game @ Swansea; captaining him in that game is a quite realistic shout as well.

He's had 2 goals, that's horrible no matter what the rest of the team is like. He's one of few players that's supposed to score and he hasn't been. Countless players like Austin at QPR, Defoe at Sunderland etc. have shown their ability to score in relegation bound teams.

He has a good amount of assists I'll give him that, and of course he's always going to be creating lots with the amount of crosses and set pieces he has, but there's no question he hasn't performed as well as last season. 'Largely' was an overstatement, but he hasn't done enough in my opinion. Quantity isn't everything, maybe these chances they are creating aren't all good opportunities. No doubt they've lacked a striker though.

Defoe and Austin are strikers who are always inside the box and are real poachers
both have penalties and have scored penalty goals
                  how can you forget that?

comparing him with them is crazy mate

                  remember his goal vs boro
                  single handedly equalised

yes he is regressed a little though but who will not with the zaza's of the world playing as as striker

You would expect him to score a few free kicks throughout the season. Bad example for them, it's late and I'm lazy, but then look through the midfield of the lower half teams, the likes of Phillips who plays for a team who practically avoid scoring. Better?

That goal was overhyped (he just ran across the box and nobody stopped him). It was good, but not one of the top goals of the season in my opinion. And I don't care if he scores the goal of the season, if he only has 2 goals to his name.

I think it's fair to say everyone has, whether it be through Ibra's blanks, Aguero's first suspension, Sanchez when Hazard turned up, etc. Don't have to look any further than the crazy price changes. I don't want to 'write off' Payet, but I'm not prepared to invest over 9m on him, let alone (c) him.

I'd be looking at Sterling, Pedro, Siggy, Walcott at that price. Lallana is still a good pick tho.

Not really mate, only going by last year in that I don't think Klopp warmed to him or his ways and don't see why that would change while he's been injured.

I'm sure he'll get minutes though, 3 games in 8 days tells us that most big players will see reduced minutes if games are won to get them through the week but I don't see Sturridge as a major threat to anyone at Liverpool simply because of Klopp.

He's OK for a few weeks while I figure out if I want Aguero back or not, that's the main focus now.

                Can do

                Kane to Costa
                Hazard to Mikhitaryan/Walcott
                Ibra to Aguero
                Aldierwierd to Luiz

To try and do it the right way and keep my balance but have to decide if losing Hazard and Ibra is worth it, the next 2 gameweeks will decide that I think.

May be in the minority here, but I'd rather Kun and Ibra than Kun and Costa. Think I'm seeing hatty's from Ibra that I just can't see from Costa.

Maybe, I'm not against that either but will have a better idea after the next two weeks.

It's like Kane, he flopped in the last 2 so is in the lose list, if Ibra does the same he'll be on that list too.

I agree, there will be tinkering but my tentative plan is to have Kun+Ibra for the long haul. Probably more rotation in the third cheaper option depending who's firing with good fixtures.

Probably should have made these moves a while ago given the price movements, but what do you think about these?

8 pointers are rarely worth it, but with Fer a big rotation risk, Costa banned, and my bench in tatters, perhaps they could repay the 8 points straight away?

Fer & Costa -> Walcott & Benteke (-8). Capoue would then shift to B1.

      Cech
      Valencia, Stones, Amat
      Sanchez, Haz, Payet, Capoue, Fer
      Ibra, Carroll

      Pickford, Costa, Kone, Nyom
      Bank 0.0m, 0FT

I would hold Costa. I would look at how to finance Carroll to Benteke. Payet to a Lallana or a Siggy should allow it.
But I see your pony 4 and 5th mids are pretty week and probably need addressing.

Yeah, especially over the Xmas period - Fer in particular looks a massive liability.

True, but Wally is comparable with Costa next week and the stronger squad plus upside this week is tempting. Main issue is it makes getting Aguero trickier down the line

I think you need to plan out your transfers for the next 3 weeks with your team structure. No point shifting out Costa for a -8 then taking another hit or two for Kun. You will want one of Kun or Costa in the next couple of weeks.

I've got a SV of 103.5 with a TV of 105.6 so my TV is less than yours but SV is just over.

Taken 48 points in hits but only on 869 for points so your hits have worked much better with regards to points, have you had much success with the captaincy? That's where I'm falling apart as the failures are not masking my hits.

Probably my biggest weakness was captain choices. I tend to take the favourite and it has not worked well. It would be interesting to know if anyone has a good TV without hits.

It has always been my tactic to go for the money for the first half of the season, hoping to get an advantage over mini league opposition who tend to be conservative.

It wasn't really my tactic to do this, I've just fallen into it and kept it going, going to try and slow it right down now as my OR is suffering and don't want to leave myself too much to do.

The captaincy is annoying, 3 or 4 correct ones would have made these hits seem like nothing, now they don't look so good, time will tell if it's a worthwhile tactic chasing/protecting the value this season.

Hal way is a good benchmark to stop taking hits. If I can keep my wildcard for double gameweeks will be a plus.

Just checked price rises and noticed a Wakey post saying love for OR needs to dwindle. Disagree with this, OR is the ultimate point of the game isn't it? Yes mini leagues are more important but taking care of your OR should achieve both aims.
For me the thing that needs to change is not the love for a good one, it's the fear of a bad one.
Be at peace with potential failure, always look to maximise your points potential each gameweek rather than defend your OR. If this means taking what you consider a good hit then go for it.
Much more fun always trying to get a higher OR rather than desperately trying not to get a lower one

Winning my ML trumps everything and the OR should follow. 60k -4 atm and leader 27pts ahead is 19k

He is probably talking more of having "fun" and making moves with freedom rather than planning everything and trying to do what others are doing just for the sake of OR.

Agree 1000%. No matter what my OR, I'm always going to chose the players I think (hope) will score the most. The only exception being a few differential options to catch a ML rival, but if I'm ahead I'm not going to try and minimize their differentials, I'm going to stick with what I'm doing.
