Scout Picks

With the deadline for the first of three festive rounds of fixtures fast approaching, we reveal the players from Thursday’s Scout Squad article who have earned a place in our Gameweek 18 Scout Picks.

Two of our favourite bargain basement keepers, Stoke’s Lee Grant and Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford, are out of the running this week, with tough ties away to Liverpool and Manchester United respectively.

However, we feel that Burnley stopper Tom Heaton (4.8) looks to be worth the small extra outlay as he entertains a Middlesbrough side that has scored a mere seven goals in eight away trips.

The 14.1% owned Clarets keeper also offers us the security of extra points – he tops both the saves and bonus returns among stoppers this term.

There’s no shifting Marcos Alonso (6.4) from our picks on the back of clean sheet or attacking returns in all but one of his 11 league matches since becoming a Chelsea first team regular in Gameweek 7.

Visitors Bournemouth have the same meagre tally of away goals as ‘Boro, making this another ideal opportunity for the 9% Spanish left wing-back to reward our faith.

Sunderland’s clash with Manchester United brings Red Devils defender Phil Jones into our thinking. The 2.8% owned centre-back’s 4.9 price tag, and clean sheet credentials look enticing this Gameweek, given that the Black Cats have mustered just four goals in eight away fixtures.

Hector Bellerin was our preferred Arsenal choice in our four-man backline for West Brom’s visit to the Emirates, but his 6.4 price tag proved too much for the 84 million budget.

Instead, we have opted for his cheaper Arsenal team-mate Gabriel (4.8), who looks set to continue at centre-back in the absence of Shkodran Mustafi. West Brom’s seven-goal tally away from the Hawthorns looks an ideal opportunity for the Gunners to pick up a fifth clean sheet of the campaign, despite recent failings.

Stoke City’s trip to Anfield also offers the prospect of a shut-out, with Nathaniel Clyne (5.7)’s added attacking threat earning him a place. No defender has created more chances than the 12% owned Liverpool full-back this season.

Our three-man midfield is focused on premium picks who all enjoy strong home fixtures.

Bournemouth’s travel sickness in attack also extends to their defence, which propels Chelsea’s Eden Hazard (10.4) into our thinking.

With Diego Costa sidelined through suspension, we feel that the 35.3% owned Belgian will step up against a Cherries backline that has conceded 16 goals away from the Vitality Stadium. Hazard could even be deployed in a false nine role in the absence of Diego Costa.

While Alexis Sanchez (11.8) is better known for his exploits on the road this season, after scoring nine of his 12 goals on his travels, we feel he still has plenty to offer for West Brom visit. The Chilean has scored twice and produced an assist in his last two home matches and takes on a Baggies defence that has just one clean sheet in eight away trips.

Sadio Mane (9.4) completes our heavyweight midfield ahead of Stoke’s Anfield visit.

The Liverpool winger has excelled in the absence of Philippe Coutinho through injury. Since the Brazilian was stretchered off in Gameweek 13, the 21.3% owned Mane has accrued four assists and scored twice. Meanwhile, the Potters have conceded 11 times on their travels.

Sunderland are likely to attempt to park the proverbial bus when they visit Old Trafford on Boxing Day. But we think this tactic is unlikely to trouble Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.5).

The big Swede comes into this tie in fine fettle, having scored seven goals in his last six league starts. Taking into account such strong form and Costa’s suspension, it is no surprise to see the Red Devils forward attract almost 400,000 new FPL owners so far prior to Monday’s deadline.

Crystal Palace’s Christian Benteke (7.7) has excelled on the road this season, netting six of his eight goals away from Selhurst Park

With Sam Allardyce now in situ, we’re backing the 10.6% owned Belgian to continue that impressive form when he visits a Watford side that has conceded 12 goals and kept a solitary league clean sheet at Vicarage Road.

Our differential offering in this week’s forward selection is Fernando Llorente (6.3), who has a home clash against West Ham’s obliging defence.

Away from home, the Hammers have conceded 17 goals, while the 5.3% owned Swansea forward has struck a pair of goals in his last two Liberty Stadium outings.

Watford’s home defence may be porous, but in Jose Holebas (4.8) they have a dead-ball expert who will be granted the opportunity to deliver attacking points when Crystal Palace pay visit. The Eagles have conceded 71 attempts from set plays this season, a tally that only Burnley, Hull City and Sunderland have the misfortune to beat.

Another set-piece specialist, Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.5), also earns a bench spot, given the Hammers’ history of conceding on the road. The 10.1% owned Swansea schemer has scored three goals and assisted a further four at the Liberty this season.

Our final bench place goes to Islam Slimani (8.3) who looks set to lead Leicester’s attack as a result of Jamie Vardy’s suspension. The Foxes differential has two goals in his last three home fixtures and welcomes an Everton side that has shipped 14 goals and kept only one clean sheet in eight away trips.

The Community Champion

The community member who beats our picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season. The current champion to beat is Boris Bodega, who achieved a 33-point margin of victory over us in Gameweek 15.

This week’s lottery has selected Kryten who has fielded a 3-5-2 line up of: Hennessey; Valencia, Lovren, Sagna; Lallana, Payet, De Bruyne, Pogba, Walcott; Lukaku, Kane.

He was in my Scout Squad. But no money. All three of us put Hazard above KDB.

Is KDB even the best City option this week? What about Silva - playing in a more advanced position? Will Iheanacho get a start? Will Sterling play more advanced.

With Hazard we know he will be their best player on the pitch and he's on penalties against an equally weak defence.

Yep, good luck Kryten - you have to be different to beat that 33 margin and he's really gone for it this week.

He has also clearly followed the picks - knowing that Pogba and Payet would be unlikely to be selected by us.

Only mistake he made is not going the double/triple on the same defence which is what the biggest winners have all used.

    Grant
    Jones - Walker - Holebas
    Sanchez - HAzard - Siggy - Eriksen
    Costa - Defoe - Ibra (c)

    GTG right?

I know Costa has suspension, but can't transfer him, as I got him for 9,5m.

      Who's your second GK?

and who's your sub coming on for Costa?

Similar team to mine, but thinking to play Hazard (c) over Zlatan.

    Feeling confident this week

    Valdes
    Alonso, holebas, vertongen,
Mane, Wally, Sanchez (c), Erickson, haz,
    Lorente, Defoe

However will probably end up scoring 22 points ha ha good luck to all

So many captain choices but no clear cut candidates

    A) Hazard - out of form, no Kante to repossess the ball.
    B) Sanchez - WBA could park the bus, and they have been solid away from home.
    C) Alonso - Kante out means lower CS potential.
    D) Llorente - In my opinion, my best bet is him, but his price and the fact that he is playing for a relegation stops me from captaining him! Plus he's a bit $h!t
    E) Ibrahimovic - I fully expect Moyes to cause an upset. Sunderland have been good away from home recently.

'twas the night before Christmas and all through FFS
Not a person was transferring, but I digress
Suddenly I saw last gameweeks red arrow
So, in I went and ditched Mo Barrow
I could see old Zlatan from the spot where I stood
So I gave him the armband as fast as I could

All I want for Christmas is a captains haul
A captains haul, a captains haul!
Gee, if I could only have a captains haul
Then I could wish you Merry Christmas

It seems so long since I could say
"My captain has gone and scored a hatty”
Gosh oh gee, how happy I’d be
If only Ibra gets me a hatty

      Harry Kane and Vardy
Used to bring me lots of goals and assists

As with every week I'd love a ton.

I'd happily take 10-20 points above average with Ibra doing well. Wouldn't like a captain fail with so many good options, especially if the rest do well.

Benteke and Carroll getting double figures would be most excellent!

If you had to Triple Captain one of these this week who would it be? Playing a half season £ ML so need to use it this week, BB next week.
Chasing 30 points so really need to nail this!

    A) Ibra (SUN)

    B) Hazard (BOU)

Sunderland not conceding many away from him they will probably have every player behind the ball except Defoe.
Bournemouth have been pretty awful on the road and Hazard usually does well at home.

    Appreciate your thoughts!

Depends if you think that you're rivals will be using a similar tactic with their chips. If they have Zlatan, Id go with Hazard. Presumably Zlatan will be a popular choice for captaincy for any 'casual' that's got him seeing as he delivered recently. Also Hazard gives you more points for the things he does.

      1. Karan_G14
        • 9 Years

Even I'm tilting towards Hazard more points for a goal, CS points and he rarely blanks at home whereas I don't think Sunderland will be an easy task for United. Bournemouth leak goals away from home and are without Ake who's been brilliant for them.

Defensively that's a blow but expect Matic to sit behind and Fabregas coming in makes Hazard a better prospect as they will be more attacking.

Morning guys! 🙂 I'm strongly considering selling Walker and buying Bellerin. Yeah, £6.4m is a lot for a defender but I'd like to be ahead of the curve for once. I think Arsenal can keep some clean sheets against easier opponents and Hector is capable of getting some attacking returns and bonus points too. We've conceded (only) 1 goal in 10 matches, some of them were penalties. It's not bad but it's not good enough and Wenger knows that. Mustafi is still out until the beginning of January which is one of the reasons why I should maybe just avoid everything altogether and monitor the situation.
Kyle is also on 4 yellow cards and I have a feeling he'll either get the 5th one against Southampton or Chelsea. I also think that there's a chance for rest against Watford which would keep him fresh for the tougher match against Chelsea.
Arsenal have 6 wonderful fixtures in a row, then Chelsea and then Hull. Am I overthinking it and should I just keep Walker? He was frustrating to own for weeks but now he's finally getting the points I expected.
Back-to-back defeats should be enough motivation to bounce back!

You have a point. But things change quickly and we have to adjust almost every week. If Arsenal actually tighten up, get (for example) 3 clean sheets in a row, people will buy them like crazy. Of course there will always be other and cheaper options with good fixtures but I do love Bellerin as a player and FPL pick.

Arsenal were pretty good defensively last year without Mustafi.

According to the fixture ticker Arsenal have best fixtures defensively over next 6.

I sold Koscielney when Bellerin got injured as I think he plays a large part in Arsenal cleansheets. I just minus foured to bring in a defender would you believe and it was Bellerin. I thought about double Chelsea or Rose but I really like the idea of Walcott and Bellerin causing havoc down the right hand side coupled with great cs potential.

Take some hits and make sure you have 11 picks if you have that much confidence in Scout Picks.

Not taking anymore hits not worth it mate why shouldn't I be confident my squad is setup nicely for GW 18 Scout Picks doesnt always flop it does give any FPL player good analysis on what to expect from each player if you have them.

Is this bet a good investment of my Christmas funds? Fingers crossed.

Should I do Mane + Origi to Phillips + Costa -4 next game week before Liverpool play man city? Cash is tight so it might move against me if I leave it longer.

    Heaton, Pickford
    Alonso, Cedric, Holebas, Evans, Amat
    Sanchez, Hazard, Mane, Walcott, Fletcher
    Ibra, Benteke, Origi

Could just do Origi to Rondon then mane to Coutinho/Firmino at some point

I agree with Anon above. imo it's like for like - I think they will probably score roughly the same points throughout the season, but trying to predict when they will actually score is difficult. I feel it's a matter of choosing one and sticking if it's your strategy to play a 3rd Striker of this caliber.

You could do Defoe to Negredo as well, and use the remaining funds to upgrade Lovren
