His biggest tally of the season. A third successive double-figure total. Sixty-eight points in his last seven Gameweek starts.

We can’t deny the numbers – Zlatan Ibrahimovic is delivering and refusing to leave the door ajar for a cast of competitors up front.

Both Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero are now back from the cold and, while we will doubtless begin measuring up for the surgery to install one of that pair alongside the Swede, it currently seems unthinkable to drop the Manchester United striker.

Having scored or assisted 16 of 26 goals scored while he’s been on the pitch, Ibrahimovic has been involved in 61% of United’s goals. While Jose Mourinho’s men have yet to hit the heights to suggest that they are a true attacking force, that’s a difficult statistic to ignore.

Zlatan’s fixtures remain strong and, seemingly classed as “undroppable” by Mourinho; there appears little or no counter argument. Ibrahimovic increased by 0.3 in price ahead of today’s deadline and, again, he’s already ranked second only to Costa for transfers, with another hike looming.

If we wish to opt for two heavyweights in our forward lines, our decision currently appears to create a head-to-head between Costa and Aguero: two strikers who present two very different scenarios.

Chelsea are undoubtedly pacesetters supreme. Their current form and confidence cannot be questioned and, while the fixture list remains demanding, it would be brave to underestimate Antonio Conte’s side against any opposition.

Manchester City’s fixtures are also testing, but they will go to Anfield on New Year’s Eve still in stuttering form.

The Gameweek 17 victory over Arsenal looked priceless in re-establishing their status as title challengers but the performance in tonight’s 3-0 win at Hull City was, for long periods, still unconvincing.

Aguero may be able to circumvent any malaise and doubts – arguably, he could flick the switch and re-invigorate City’s season.

However, at 12.8, he costs a princely sum which would surely restrict flexibility in midfield or defence. In many ways, Aguero now represents a gamble.

That seems an unthinkable and unlikely sentence to write on these pages. The Argentine has, for so long, been a mainstay of the Fantasy Football Scout community and an asset that requires little thought or research. But that is surely no longer the case.

Having missed seven matches of the season through ill-discipline and, with the jury still out on Pep Guardiola’s side, the choice between Costa and Aguero is not straightforward and even appears weighted in the Chelsea man’s favour.

Currently 2.1 cheaper than Aguero, the Spaniard has shown unerring consistency and, crucially, could allow us to retain significant funds in midfield, or even opt for a Blues pairing in defence.

But, as we’ve seen, the landscape can shift so quickly. With just a matter of days before Gameweek 19, our opinions and plans have to remain flexible.

Midfield assets like Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez, in particular, are under constant pressure to perform now that Aguero is back in the game.

Hazard’s spot-kick against Bournemouth may have kept talk of an exodus subdued for now, although two goals in six Gameweek starts is still not enough to justify his selection now that Costa has returned to the equation. We need more from Hazard against Stoke City.

As for Sanchez, he hit a post and fired in more attempts than any other player in Monday’s matches but has now produced just a single goal since his heralded hat-trick at the London Stadium back in Gameweek 14.

Arsenal still appear to be struggling at the Emirates without Santi Cazorla in the double pivot. That needs to change for the visit of Big Sam’s Crystal Palace: we perhaps need to see Sanchez back in the striker’s role. We certainly need him back in the points to stave off any talk of exit plans.

Again, such a knee-jerk reaction seems unthinkable when we look back on the scramble for the Chilean’s services only last month.

But that’s typical of this campaign and, for tonight at least, the only current certainty appears to be relentlessly providing and scoring goals for Manchester United.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      Looks good. I'd save.

What would you do with mine:

      Foster
      Alonso, Walker, McAuley
      Alexis, Haz, Mane, Allen
      Kane, Ibra, Anichebe

      Robinson, Can, Chambers, Lenihan

Not the best fixtures all round. I have 1 FT and am thinking Kane > Costa.

Not sure I'd captain Hazard. Costa will be raring to go, more reliable too. Sanchez up against Dann and Delaney could run riot as well.

And then there's a certain big Swede who is in the form of his life..

Difficult to say really. The fans want him in but that was an odd set up today. I haven't seen the game and assumed that it was 343 looking at the lineup but apparently Coleman played in midfield in a 433 so what that means for Holgate is anyone's guess. One to watch though. 🙂

It was a back three, with coleman and baines as wingbacks. Holegate replaced Jags, who's been very accident prone (but perhaps Koeman is giving his old legs a rest)?

          Thanks koeman.

I think you may be right, jagielka has been making a few mistakes... holgate comes in and they get a clean sheet which won't go un-noticed by koeman.

Definitely going to monitor him closely.

    Repost:

    Top 5 HOF update

What the top five FPL managers over the past few seasons did last week, the highlight being that all five sold Costa for Ibrahimovic as an early transfer! First here's why they are the best FPL managers:

    - lowest rank in the last 3 seasons for any of the top 5 is 4,324
    - highest rank in the last 3 seasons for any of the top 5 is 49

    GW18 moves

    *(c) GW18: Sanchez x2, Ibrahimovic x3
*all made at least 1 transfer with one team taking a -4 hit (2 transfers) and another a -8 hit (3 transfers)
*players in: Ibrahimovic x5, Lallana, Valencia, Capoue
*players out: Costa x5, Hazard, Smith, Phillips

*players in all 5 teams: Kane, Ibrahimovic, Sanchez
*players in 4 out of 5 teams: Eriksen, Sigurdsson, Alonso, Amat
*players in 3 out of 5 teams: Lovren, Foster, Heaton, Pickford
    *all have a 3-4-3 formation
*3rd strikers: Anichebe x2, Benteke, Origi, Rondon

career HOF rank / squad value / ITB / total points after GW17 / FPL rank GW17 / (GW 16)
    #1 / 102.2 / 1.7 / 913 / 109,703 / (67,962)
    #2 / 104.0 / 0.0 / 938 / 43,910 / (30,790)
    #3 / 104.4 / 1.1 / 929 / 63,197 / (41,850)
    #4 / 102.7 / 1.6 / 833 / 845,911 / (767,159)
    #5 / 104.5 / 0.1 / 961 / 16,483 / (14,410)

Only one of the 5 qualified for the cup (#5).

Good move! When are you thinking of getting him back? I'm tempted to wait until after the Spurs match, because a) it might be hard to score against a good defence and b) it could be feisty and there's a chance he picks up a card. What do you think?

They all got Sigy when Coutinho got injured before Sigy's haul against Sunderland, and I guess have had Amat for ages and use as a cheap 5th defender. They tend not to take hits so some players in their teams feel old.

      Hoping Kane scores tomorrow.
Situation needs more form strikers than positions available much like that period earlier in the season when the midfielders were on fire.
It was only at this stage last season that Kane woke up and basically went point for point with Aguero until the end of the season.
Maybe it's a bit more conservative but i'll be going back to Costa.
Going to take Chelsea's form and Costa's stability added to the fact he is picking up bonuses and assists.

Depends a lot on how Kane does v Saints but early thoughts on this:

    A) Kane (wat) to Costa (STK) for GW19
    B) Save FT > Kane (CHE) to Aguero (BUR) for GW20.

    Would you rather have

    A:
    Forster - Pick
    Lovren - Luiz - Kosc - Holebas - Amat
    Eriksen - Mane - Hazard - Sanchez - Phillips
    Llorente - Ibra - Anichebe
    0.7 itb
    +14p

    B:
    Heaton - Pick
    Alonso - Lovren - Holebas - Pieters - Amat
    Hazard - Siggy - Eriksen - Sanchez - Flecher
    Ibra - Costa - Origi
    0.0 itb

Aguero in worth: -8 and losing Walcott and Siggy? I think yes. Could easily see that 8 back at Anfield!

I can see a price drop on Siggy perhaps, but Negredo and Walcott?

      Best option here lads?

      ----------------------Pickford----------------------
      -------------Alonso Jones Amat---------------
      Sanchez Hazard Walcott(!) Siggy Lallana
      -----------------Ibrahimovic Kane--------------
      ---------------------------------------------------------
Foster Anichibe Holebas Pieters. 1 FT, 0.8m ITB

      A) Save FT, Anichibe (bur) can cover Walcott, use 2 FT to put towards Kun next week
      B) Holebas & Walcott > Nyom & Mkhitaryan -4 (reluctant to sell Wally with those fixtures)
      C) Siggy & Lallana > Mkhitaryan & JROD -4
      D) Something else?

What did Mark mean by this in the above article

" the only current certainty appears to be busily picking open defences for Manchester United."

That Man United or Ibra is fairly consistent right now at scoring - that's how I read it at least 🙂

Ah ok, I thought he was talking about bringing in utd defenders 😳

No need, probably just me being thick. I have double utd defenders so I am probably just a but fixated on utd and defences:D

Siggy, you've got one GW left to prove those underlying stats mean anything.

Being the only threat in a lack lustre team isn't worth holding on to.

After next week was the time to get rid of Siggy anyway. If you've had him since the start of his good fixtures I don't think many complaints can be made, Swansea are just poor.

Borini 5.1 a good cheap 3rd striker option?

Put him on watch list since he returned, does seem nailed on?

How did Palace look today defensively?

Don't think next GW captaincy is that straight forward, Boro and Stoke can frustrate away from home re: Ibra and Costa

Hi mark, id say for a lot of us its not costa v aguero but ibra v aguero.
I feel locked into costa now unless a long term ban/injury as i bought him for 9.7.

Chelsea are winning the league for me and Costa will be involved, would be mental to get rid. Ibra hitting form.

Aguero for me has to prove he's the better option. Hasn't so far this season.

Considering as a Siggy swap after next week, just allows an upgrade of De Roon to Phillips for me.

(Pedro and Antonio also an option)
