Last season, there was simply no contest when it came to the budget midfielder of choice amongst Fantasy Premier League managers.

Starting off 2015/16 at the cost of 5.5, Riyad Mahrez tore up the top-flight on his way to ending the campaign as the highest scoring player in FPL, steering Leicester City to the most unexpected of title triumphs.

This time around, however, things are not quite so cut and dry…

Watford’s Etienne Capoue and Stoke’s Joe Allen have fallen out of favour after severe regression, while Palace wide man Wilfried Zaha is currently out the picture after opting to turn out for Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Hull City’s Robert Snodgrass has upped his output in recent matches, but with trips to Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal supplemented by a visit from Liverpool in the next four, it’s difficult to extol his virtues until the schedule smiles far kinder from Gameweek 26 onwards.

With that in mind, we’re turning our attentions to a couple of cut-price wide men with form and fixtures very much in their favour.

Matt Phillips has dispelled the notion that, when it comes to Fantasy investment, it’s defence or nothing with West Brom.

This week, over 73,000 FPL managers have drafted in the 5.9-priced Baggies winger, who ranks eighth overall in the midfield standings with 102 points.

As a result, he currently sits in 20% of squads, having averaged 5.1 points per match.

Bournemouth’s Junior Stanislas is another who has belied a lowly price tag.

In a season hampered by hamstring injuries, he’s surpassed Phillips for points per appearance, with an average of 5.5 just behind Liverpool pair Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho, on 5.6 apiece.

Subject to over 42,000 transfers in this week, the Cherries wide man remains very much a differential and resides in a mere 3% of squads right now.

In tonight’s second member’s article, we cast an eye over both these players, assessing their individual numbers, over the season and in recent weeks, as we ramp up our search for value in the centre of the park.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

According to FPL stats Pickford close to drop and Jakupovic may rise. Worth a transfer to capture small + in bank or better to keep Pickford who may be back in 2 to 3 weeks?

Is straight after a wildcard one of the best times to use a bench boost? RMT shows my best possible projection this week.

    Foster
    Brunt, rose, Daniels
    Haz, sanchez(c) eriksen, Phillips
    Ibra, Defoe, giroud
    (Jaku, de roon, friend, yoshida)

Give it a few weeks and usually stuck with some dead wood you can't shift due to more pressing issues

    2. stat
      9 years, 6 months ago

Not worth it. Jakupovic is probably the least likely keeper to keep a clean sheet this GW. De Roon is a decent 5th mid but not one that you can expect many attacking returns from. I feel like the Boro - West Ham game will be a low scoring affair - Friend probably has a good chance to keep a CS. Southampton - Leicester may be another low scoring affair, but Southampton haven't looked very good lately so I wouldn't rely on a Yoshida CS.

Save your Bench Boost for a DGW.

I used it perfectly last season on a dgw. That was with the help of a wildcard beforehand though.
Early 2nd wildcard this year has laboured that option I fear.

        1. stat
          9 years, 6 months ago

You have a point - it will be harder to bring in DGW players without a wildcard. However, if you plan your transfers strategically I'm sure it's possible to get a decent DGW squad.

However, even if you don't keep it for a DGW, I wouldn't play it this GW.

Yes. Hull's fixtures are terrible and Snodgrass might not play this GW. Meanwhile Baines and Stanislas both have good form and good fixtures, and both are on penalties (Stanislas is on pens when Wilson isn't playing). But keep in mind that Baines might not play.

Yup. Pep did go with KDB as false 9 in a massive game vs Barca, if I remember correctly. Aguero workrate is an issue to pep.

Ok guys, need some advice her. Current OR: 37, but really unsure on what to do.

    1 FT, 3.3 ITB!

    Grant (Heaton)
Brunt - Valencia - Friend (Holebas - Amat)
Sanchez (C) - Hazard - Antonio - Stanislas (de Roon)
    Ibra - Kane - Carroll

Tempting to transfer Holebas or Amat to a decent defender so that I can unleash Antonio and Carroll on the Boro defence (not play Friend).. but would also like to save FT and do Carroll -> Lukaku and Hazard -> Alle/Eriksen next round. However, maybe try to maximize points, i.e. Just do AOA and play DeRoon against Wham?

A: save FT and play Friend
B: save FT and AOA de Roon (bench Friend)
    C: Holebas/Amat -> defender (Who?)
    D: Any other suggestions

I’ve been breaking my head over this situation for the whole week and still don’t know what to do…

    My team:

    Foster-Pickford
    Alonso-Jones-Holebas-Pieters-Amat
    Sanchez-Hazard-Phillips-Stanislas-Capoue
    Aguero-Zlatan-Benteke

I have 2 FT so I need to use one this week.

    A) Holebas to Friend/Yoshida which allows me to upgrade Benteke to Lukaku the next week (while downgrading Hazard to Eriksen)
    B) Holebas to Brunt which doesn’t allow me to upgrade Benteke to Lukaku
    C) Capoue to some cheap bench foddler and play Holebas this week

    Captain?

    A. Sanchez
    B. Hazard
    C. Ibra
    D. Costa

What do I do with Ake?

    1. Start and if he doesnt play Cedric comes in.
    2. Bench and take the risk if he potentially plays.

      2
He may only play a cameo
C is tough. Haz/Sanchez for me, only because I'm not sure of the Costa situation

Who's more of a rotation risk

    Walker or Baines

      Neither

Walker, but only slightly. Pochettino sometimes rotates his full backs, but from what I remember he hasn't done that much this season. Neither has any significant threat of being rotated - Baines is 100% nailed on, Walker is 95%.
