A day for differentials.

Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino and West Bromwich Albion’s Gareth McAuley are the only two players with more than 10% ownership to hit double-digits.

Firmino was teetering on the edge prior to the today’s deadline – owned by just over 456,000 FPL managers or 10.6% – the Brazilian had shed 340,000 since Gameweek 16.

Such losses are understandable, sparked by a dismal run of paltry returns. A single goal over ten barren Gameweeks – his strike in a 4-1 victory over Stoke City – did little to stem a tide of rejection. With Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana thriving, Firmino owners were switching allegiance or looking elsewhere as rival heavy-hitters delivered.

Today’s 14-points will reverse matters, for now at least. That fifth double-figure haul for Firmino ironically arrived on a day that saw Philippe Coutinho make a return to the Liverpool starting line-up. Withdrawn on 65 minutes, his comeback was curtailed as he gave way to allow his compatriot to take centre-stage.

While his two goals were not enough to save Liverpool from defeat, Firmino’s own Fantasy stock is revived, just as thousands were making or considering the move for his Brazilian team-mate.

But Coutinho’s early withdrawal has already proved enough to give some early adopters the jitters. Meanwhile, after suffering a third successive blank, Lallana has now returned just a single goal and an assist in six starts.

Based on early transfer activity, both are facing ownership losses over the extended gap to Gameweek 23, with this shifting affection from one Liverpool asset to another typical of behaviour this season.

Two prolonged spells of form from Coutinho’s and Lallana have come close to resolving the argument but, in truth, we look unlikely to ever settle on one of Klopp’s midfield as a dependable “solution”.

Perhaps the key question should be whether we should overlook them altogether.

Two draws and a defeat has stalled the Liverpool title bid, while over the last four Gameweeks, their attacking numbers are settled in mid-table. They face Chelsea next.

Sadio Mane’s absence appears to be a key factor and, arguably, until his return, we should reserve judgement, regardless of Firmino’s flurry.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Considering WC'ing this as there are about 6-7 deadwoods -

    Foster. Pickford.
    Alonso. Rose. Evans. Holebas. Pieters.
    Sanchez. Alli. Lallana. Philips. Capoue.
    Ibrahimovic. Costa. Defoe.

    What do you think?

Pickford - does it matter for fixture run if you have Foster?
Evans - not ideal wba def but if fit would you play him?
          Holebas - yeah.
Pieters - not much better for price & fixtures ok
Lallana - think he played well.
Capoue - to be replaced with another benched 5th?
Defoe - still probably best 3rd fwd.

I'd just switch Holebas & save wc.

Pieters got an asset yesterday! Lallana is a good player in a good team. His form and fixtures aren't great but he's not your priority. Same with Defoe. Don't waste your wildcard, get in players who will play for players who won't play, then focus on swapping form players next week.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is Patience once again a virtue.

With his first double digit haul in four Gameweeks Firmino certainly rewarded those who have clung onto the Brazilian. Around 90K of his owners weren't so patient over that time.

Could patience once again be a virtue?

Or were some of GWK 22's freak results (Swansea beating Liverpool, Stoke drawing with ManU, West Ham scoring without Payet ...again, Middlesbrough and Bournemouth home defences crumbling and even Watford scoring) just that - freak results.

To add some more patient players into the discussion.

Patient Sigurdsson owners were also rewarded (I'll be keeping hold of him now, certainly)

KDB owners were handed a nice pick me up

    As were Carroll owners.

Is patience back in vogue or is knee jerking still the way forward?

There is no point in being patient or stubborn while your overall rank plummets

If a player is out of form blanks for 8 or 9 weeks then scores a brace it still doesn't justify holding him.

      Bad FPL management

But you can't predict that it will be eight or nine blanks rather than two or three... The problem is that a stubborn manager predicts that the goal will come next week, too many times.

It's bad management in hindsight, but as far as we knew at the time, Firmino's bad run could have just been three weeks long.

Doesn't seem like patience really is a virtue. Firmino scored only two double hauls in 10 weeks. Other players at that price like eriksen, Alli and even pogba produced better results. If these are not freak results, then they should happen on a regular basis, which has not been the case.

Patience has been the key for me gaining a good rank this season. I have some players locked into my team (regardless of fixtures and form). I know over time they will score well and rise in value. It then stick 3 cheap outfielders on the bench and 2 cheap keepers.

      2 cheap keepers
      3 cheap bench players
      Brunt
      Hazard
      Sanchez
      Eriksen
      Aguero
      Ibra
      Defoe

All of those players have been locked into my team for at least 10 weeks (injuries/suspension dependent). None are going anywhere unless they pick up injuries or suspensions (bringing in KDB for Hazard is the only potential change). I am happy that I can soak up some poor form and when they explode they will be a differential e.g. Aguero.

Patience this season has been the key. I have knee jerked too much in previous seasons. Pick the right players to be patient with and swap the others for form and fixtures and it is the safest way to a good rank.

I assume that the players locked into your team are regular points scorers? The ones you list above are.

Holding onto a player like Firmino as mentioned above makes no sense whatsoever

        1. Demel
          • 14 Years

I agree. It is all about locking into the people you 'know' will score points. I know Aguero will score points. I don't need to knee jerk him out. I know Hazard will. Ditto.

If Phillips blanks for 3-4 weeks then he will be gone. Zaha for example will be in. It is being patient with the players you expect to score and being decisive by moving on the others.

Thanks Jonty. I probably got most of the idea from you. Build a good team structure. Lock in the players you expect to score well. Change the others based on form and fixtures.

The locked in players will slowly climb in value.

The changeable players will rise in price due to bandwagons, and natural transfers in due to form/fixtures and hopefully high scores.

Holding on for 3-4 weeks is being patient, any more than that is just silly.

Also Jonty what are you doing with Daniels/Stanislas? Bounemouth seem off the boil right now

Keeping for CPL at home....when it comes to off the boil Palace's kettle is now officially broken.

Then will reassess. Stanislas could stay as bench fodder - needed for blanks and outstanding games - he has scored three v Hull this season so can be very handy when opposition is weak (which Palace are).

Daniels may also go to the likes of Brunt or Coleman/Baines.

Happy to be patient for another weak.

My rule of patience is usually failing to score against v weak sides over a period of time. The trust issue disappears. I prefer players that you know will do well against minnows.

Depends on rank to a certain degree I think. Higher ranked players will probably be more careful with transfers and show some restraint whereas lower ranked players might be less risk averse in terms of going for kneejerk transfers.

Good players will, eventually repay patients but it's whether you can afford to have that patients. The Goals/Assists imminent are good a pretty good indication as to whether you should have patients with certain players I think

KdB owner! Owned since a failed punt on new year's day and been unable to get rid since because of other injuries, so I got the points more by accident than design.... As it also looks like he did.

I'm unsure about whether he stays or goes now - city have an OK next 3, but I only own Alli as Spurs "cover" so I'd initially planned to move Eriksen in for KdB. Not so sure now!

Patience is required, however I don't think the cas of Firmino is a good one. He's only had two hauls in the last 10 and averaging around 4 PPG - quite frankly not good enough for his price tag. It remains to be seen whether or not Liverpool will get back to the form of the early season, especially without Mané.

Swansea was a freak result, yes, but I don't think the same can be said of Stoke and West Ham. Stoke have been finding the net a lot recently and are always resilient at home. Payet is the kick up the backside that West Ham have needed and I can see them doing well in the next few.

      Deeney scoring, however...

problem for me is that patience isn't really closing the OR gaps for me.
My OR is up about 300k last 3 GWs but I'm making little progress on the higher ranks. 1 point closer to top 250k, 3 points further away from top 100k, extra 6 pts away from 50k

Also is there a difference between being patient with "proven" players like Siggy/KDB and being patient with the differentials Carroll/Stanislas? The differentials being the ones I really need to find quickly to close ranking gaps.

I've already made my FT this GW.

I've sold Hazard for Alli, I think he's capable of matching or even bettering his points tally over the season with a hefty cash saving.

It's a similar situation with Aguero, I know he will score and get hauls but feel I can cover most of them points and reinvest the savings better in my team.

This patience is a virtue thinking is rubbish! Yes Firmy gave 14 points yesterday, but owners have had to put up with a lot of 3,2 and 1 pointers over the last 11 gws! If you'd transferred him out for somebody that had given you good points during the last 10 gws and brought him back in for this gw, then well done, otherwise you're just lazy and have been rewarded!

Took a hit for Siggy to Lallana prior to Siggy assisting in the Palace game. He's got 16 compared to Lallana's 5 or 6, -4 since. Siggy had a heap around 5 blanks though and at the same price, Lallana definetly seemed the way forward.

Took a hit to do Firmino to Sanchez before Sanchez got a hatty at West Ham so happy with that kneejerk.

Think if you do it enough times, your always gonna have good ones and bad ones. It's a fine line but I like to take the risks, it makes the game much more fun

I don't think anyone in their right mind would have held onto Firmino for this long! Yes this Swansea fixture was appealing so getting a pool player in made sense but it's so hard to pick the right one, most picked Lallana and I don't think that was a bad decision.

I didn't pick any pool players, instead I thought Sigy to Stanislas would be a better move, Sigy didn't really deliver in his run of good fixtures, the new manager hasn't made a massive impact, so it seemed to me a sensible transfer with two good home fixtures for Stanislas. I hope Stanislas delivers next week. I will keep an eye on Swansea - is this result a freak or the start of an upturn in form?

I'm glad Carroll did well this week though like many I had planned to move him on for Lukaku or Kane. What to do now...

The only player I've been truly patient with - I prefer the word 'stubborn' - is Hazard. He has proven fantasy potential playing in a team doing well. But I am being stubborn because he hasn't delivered value this season.

Of the top 5 career HOF Ville Ronka is known for never taking a hit, this week he brought in Lallana for Allen, it didn't work out for him this week but last week he certainly benefitted from his patient approach; he waited until a few hours before the deadline to sell Costa and bring in Kane, whereas the number 2 in the career HOF had a Friday the 13th to forget taking an 8 point hit to bring in Costa only to find out later he was dropped/injured.

But even Ronka hasn't been patient all season, like pretty much all the top 5 earlier in the season when Costa finally got his 5th yellow card they immediately sold him for Ibra, who remains in all their teams. An example when kneejerking paid off! Ibra was in form and bound to rise in price, Costa bound to drop.

So both patience and kneejerking can both be a virtue, the skill is knowing when to do one or the other.

I think patience is something I'm lacking this season mainly due to the volatility of the market.

One of the winners of FPL stated that he prefers consistent scorers to explosive ones. Which Demel makes a good point. Who are those players that we can rely on for consistent points so we keep a solid base and then rotate the others on form/fixtures. I would say they would be

Hazard (maybe not good value so far but still consistent)
      Sanchez
      Ibra
      Costa (till recently)
Lukaku (yes he has some drought but still scores goals over the long term)
Your top 4 defenders or FK taking ones
      Alli / Eriksen
      Heaton

There is a good spine in there of Heaton, 1 Top 4 defender, 1 FK or OOP defender, Alli/Eriksen, Sanchez, Ibra, Costa

Patience is good up to a certain point. I mean, 1 goal for firmino in 10 GWs or whatever is fantastic for those patient managers. Well done you got a lovely double digit haul! However, if they had knee jerked for Lallana or Phillips or Alli or Eriksen, or one of many who have out scored him in that period, then they'd be a lot happier!

People seem like they like the kudos they get for hanging onto a player who they has an explosive score when in reality they could've gotten rid for a player who would've got them a lot more points therefore leaving them with more points overall.

      Seems senseless.

Well it depends on certain factors. I owned Firmino and captained him this GW and jumped from 143k to 61k in OR. But for me, the following factors kept me from transferring him out:

      1) Other pressing issues in my team each gameweek
      2) Never saw our fixtures take a turn for the worse
      3) Coutinho's return emphasized on Firmino being back to False 9
      4) He was the one of only 2 differentials from my ML Rival's attack (So I had to take this risk to take a lead over him)

If there are genuine good options available then there is no harm of getting rid (Like owning Alli or Eriksen over Firmino in all these weeks). But I had Eriksen earlier for his huge double figure hauls at home and now I own Alli so I don't see many good options available at that slot. Patience is key for players you know are going to score good overall or are part of a regularly scoring or consistent team. So holding on to players such as Pool mid, Haz/Costa, Spurs attack, Ibra, Alexis, Kaku, etc would favor you over the long term since they will end up within the top overall scorers.

Being impatient cost me dearly this gameweek. Finally sold Siggy and KDB after relative barren periods over good fixtures (both scored in what were tough looking games on paper), and a Sanchez goal and a Phillips blank felt like a gutpunch! I also benched Carroll, with Rondon, his replacement, blanking at home to Sunderland.

Sometimes you have to stand still and let the points come, rather than chase. Unfortunately for me this year, I've elected to chase when I should hold, and have held for longer in other cases and missed genuine bandwagons.

But those moves made sense on paper - and could easily have worked out, so shouldn't beat yourself up.

It's a judgement call ultimately - which is part of the fun no?

According to the DGW/blank tracker spreadsheet https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AXOuLIzI4un4adZxpsTCN7amF8Go81NHAPZcbi51ZbI/edit#gid=2131840260 only 4 games have got a more than 50% chance of being played in GW28:

    Middlesbrough v Sunderland (57%)
    Hull v Swansea (83%)
    Everton v West Brom (100%)
    Bournemouth v West Ham (100%)

If it turns out these are the only four fixtures being played in that GW, how many current players do you have in your squad that will be available?

Then, remember that you only have 6 FTs without hits between now and GW28........

And also bear in mind the potential blanks in GW26.

You NEED to be start thinking about this NOW everyone!!!

I would suggest not doing ANY transfers (unless on a WC) until the FA Cup 5th round draw is done a week tomorrow - then, we will know definitely who will blank in GW26, and have a much better idea of who is likely to blank in GW28.

Burnley (ie. Heaton) owners beware - it might've been brought up already elsewhere, but I noticed Burnley have 4x away games on the trot, from GW26 to 29.

That said, blanks possible in GW26: in unlikely event of overturning Man Utds leg lead in the League Cup and in GW28: potential FA cup progress of both themselves & Liverpool)

That's gotta be worth taking into account not just for blanks but also for those relying on their home form going forward.

Wow what a motley crew of teams.

I am not going to load up on those to ruin my squad - it follows then that there will be GW's where these teams are NOT playing so the players on stronger teams will ultimately outscore them - even if it means red arrows this particular GW, in the long term it would work out better to keep stronger players no?

For me, there are three broad options:

        1) WC GW28

        2) Sacrifice GW28 and WC later for the DGWs (WC33 for GW34 or WC 36 for GW37)

        3) Start bringing in players now who definitely will play GW28 (keeping GW26 in mind as well) and WC GW29.

Too much is being made of GW28, a lot will be in the same boat and your squad is not worth killing just for one week that looks horrible anyway.

I won't be writing it off but I'd be happy to play with 6 or 7 and owning the best captain that week.

            • 17 Years

I agree with this. Except for WBA and maybe Swansea, if you plan for a half decent side in GW28 you're playing some terrible fixtures in GW27. There has to be a happy medium somewhere but trying for 11 squad members who are actually playing in GW28 might not be the best strategy.

Assuming the big double is in 34 (which means you have to WC in 33) you'll have 4 GW's with that toilet squad so any gains you make it 28 will more than likely be lost in the next 4 weeks anyway.

              1. Pasqualinho
                • 17 Years
                9 years, 5 months ago

True - but there's nothing to stop you WCing in 29 to prepare well enough for your 34 team. It's just a bit more risky to do it that way. There will be an interesting few strategies knocking around. Plus there will undoubtedly be many who want to wait for the DGW37 who will also have to find a way to navigate through the first DGW and those that have already used the WC. It will be entertaining on here for sure.

Too risky IMO and it didn't work for those I know who did it last year.

WC in 29 and you have 6 GW'S to hope you don't get injuries and hope your players maintain form, who we see as essential now often changes in 2 or 3 week spells.

You need to look at fixtures first. Playing bench fodders from Hull or Swansea (5th def and mid) are having great fixtures since gw 27. Also Boro. If those three teams will play normal gw, its no risk to have valueble bench. Boro and Eve have one green fix on gw 29, so just WBA is going red since gw 29.
I have 5 right now with Antonio, Carroll, Baines, Brunt and Philips.
Looking for Lukaku, Siggy, Snoddy, Jaku and swa/hull bench fodder defender.
10 in total. Gives me still Alonso, Ibra, Eriksen, Rose and Heaton for gw 29. 5 transfers. No hits. All newcomers with decent schedule. If you have any thoughts all are welcome.

I don't have any Spurs coverage, losing Kun will most probably allow me to get both Kane and Alli/Eriksen

Yep. Gonna hold until cup games/info are done/clearer.

    Hi all!

KdB.. does he stay or does he go!? Had thought of taking him out for Eriksen, but given yesterday would you do anything else?

    Randolph / Jaku
Alonso Jones Brunt / Pieters Amat
Alli KdB Sanchez Antonio / Fletcher
    Ibra Giroud Rondon
    1.4m itb / 1ft

    Thanks!

I have him and still not happy. He was very deep at times

Yeah that's what was making me want to go Eriksen, Tinman. He flatters to deceive a lot and definitely comes very deep to get the ball, plus it looks like his pts yesterday were very fortunate.

I would keep. 4 of the next 5 fixtures look primed for points. City are not far from clicking. He could be a great differential.

At the expense of another Spurs player when most have 2, though? I'm a little way off affording Eriksen in for Antonio sadly

Will have to check this. Might keep as I'm looking into blank and dgw transfers only right now

Hmm what teams are you specifically targeting? I'm aware I need an Everton player, considering Barkley but I know that's a bit of a gamble lol

If still have him would keep.

Thanks dude... Same question as above... At the expense of two spurs?

Probably, but honestly sounds like you want Eriksen.

Best move here fellas? 2FT and 0.4m in the bank.

    A) Stones -> Brunt
    B) Stones & Lallana -> Baines & 7.1m (Tadic?)
    C) Stones & Aguero -> Baines & Ibra/Kane
    D) Stones, Lallana & Aguero -> Baines, Alli & Kane (-4)
    E) Stones, Lallana & Aguero -> Brunt, Alli & Ibra (-4)

Didn't see the MCY:TOT game at the w/e - how did Kun look? Worth keeping for whu/SWA? I'm chasing so need some decent differentials.

    Cech
    Valencia, Rose, Nyom
    Sanchez, Eriksen, Lallana, Sterling
    Aguero, Carroll, Benteke

    Pickford, Capoue, Stones, Amat

      A. I'm keeping Kun for now as City/Spurs looked like different teams, but consensus very pro Aguero -> Kane.

From a FPL point of view I hope Liverpool get into the League Cup Final

Having no Liverpool players and 2 Arsenal players makes this a no brainer

    Hazard / Lallana / Defoe >> Alli / Antonio / Costa
    OR
    Hazard / Defoe >> Alli / Carroll

Obviously following the Chelsea match today, to see how Costa is.
