A day for differentials.

Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino and West Bromwich Albion’s Gareth McAuley are the only two players with more than 10% ownership to hit double-digits.

Firmino was teetering on the edge prior to the today’s deadline – owned by just over 456,000 FPL managers or 10.6% – the Brazilian had shed 340,000 since Gameweek 16.

Such losses are understandable, sparked by a dismal run of paltry returns. A single goal over ten barren Gameweeks – his strike in a 4-1 victory over Stoke City – did little to stem a tide of rejection. With Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana thriving, Firmino owners were switching allegiance or looking elsewhere as rival heavy-hitters delivered.

Today’s 14-points will reverse matters, for now at least. That fifth double-figure haul for Firmino ironically arrived on a day that saw Philippe Coutinho make a return to the Liverpool starting line-up. Withdrawn on 65 minutes, his comeback was curtailed as he gave way to allow his compatriot to take centre-stage.

While his two goals were not enough to save Liverpool from defeat, Firmino’s own Fantasy stock is revived, just as thousands were making or considering the move for his Brazilian team-mate.

But Coutinho’s early withdrawal has already proved enough to give some early adopters the jitters. Meanwhile, after suffering a third successive blank, Lallana has now returned just a single goal and an assist in six starts.

Based on early transfer activity, both are facing ownership losses over the extended gap to Gameweek 23, with this shifting affection from one Liverpool asset to another typical of behaviour this season.

Two prolonged spells of form from Coutinho’s and Lallana have come close to resolving the argument but, in truth, we look unlikely to ever settle on one of Klopp’s midfield as a dependable “solution”.

Perhaps the key question should be whether we should overlook them altogether.

Two draws and a defeat has stalled the Liverpool title bid, while over the last four Gameweeks, their attacking numbers are settled in mid-table. They face Chelsea next.

Sadio Mane’s absence appears to be a key factor and, arguably, until his return, we should reserve judgement, regardless of Firmino’s flurry.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Does Barkley have a problem with Lukaku ?...not for the first time this season he seemed hell bent on refusing to pass to him in a good position. Could it be part of what was behind dropping him earlier in the season?

Interesting theory, haven't heard this before.

Barkley was in terrible form and dropping him seemed to be Koeman warning him not to rest on his laurels. Think it's maybe just a case of Barkley trying to hard to get back in the goals and help his confidence

      1. Dr Dream
        • 13 Years

Just watch MOTD back again. Either it's part of his poor decision making or they do have a problem playing together.

Lukaku looks at him with great displeasure a couple of times again.

          • 10 Years

I think Lukaku points at his feet too much, and either doesn't take responsibility for being in the wrong place, or accept that sometimes the ball just won't drop to him. I see what you mean with Barkley, but I think some of it is just the fact that Barkley finds himself in positions where Lukaku will show frustration more than other players

    Evening all,

So had a bit of a shocker, moved to a 3-5-2 for the first time this season, benched Carroll & played Rose over Pieters, 17 points benched, ouch !

Need to sell Hazard, shall I go for

    1. Alli (that will block Kane as would be 3rd Spurs)

    2. Barkley

    3. Mirallas

    4. Other

    Team is

    Heaton, Robo

    Alonso, Rose, Brunt

Hazard *, Sanchez, Eriksen, Stanislas, Phillips

    Ibra, Giroud, Carroll

    Cheers

Burnley away is a little off putting too though, particulary given Burnley home form and Hazard's away form. I am planning on bringing Costa back in next few, probably for Swansea if not before.

Could always bring Hazard back at some point too but Alli over next 2 feels like it makes more sense. Does block Kane though which could be an issue.

            Hope your GW's going well...

No...i'm doing rubbish. Not so bothered though.

If you feel happier with Alli then do it. Swansea just stuck three past Liverpool though so maybe that match isn't really a tough match for Chelsea.

Good point, I should probably hold transfer with FA cup on the horizon, can get a bit trigger happy.

As for your GW, your OR is pretty decent & tomorrow should produce plenty of points, good luck

Thankfully Lukaku blanked. Probably means he won't rise in price until after the FA cup given I have exact cash for Defoe to Luka. Stoke away is the perfect fixture for him. No one expects him to score given Stoke defend well. All set up for a 11 pointer or something.

No jut because I like your story. I want to try my own now. So in the 66th minute of Chelsea vs Hull alonso will get subbed off for Nathan ake thereby preventing Macauley coming off the bench for my rival. Chelsea will then concede a goal to the misery of my other rivals who have azpi or Cahill and I walk away with a cleanie tomorrow

Everyone's saying Sterling should have gone down, but no one is saying Walker shouldn't have pushed him... It's not like it's Sterling's fault. Attacking players shouldn't go down when they feel they've been fouled, and be blamed if they didn't go down when someone else has fouled them. That's ridiculous!!!!

Referees should start giving clear penalties like that and the rules of football should be changed so that all pushes like that are red cards and whenever a player pulls a shirt it's a yellow and so on.... Would be ridiculous amount of yellows at first but later players would learn... If footballers can't play the game within the rules and in a fair play fashion, then their hands (pun intended 🙂 ) needs to be forced. Walker violated the rules of football and nothing happened --> ridiculous! It's not football!!

I'm not a City fan, I'm a Soton fan and I do like Spurs way more than City 😉

I think Sterling lost all his credibility considering he dives every time he gets the ball in the opposite box. If I were the referee and saw the push, but he didn't fall, I'll probably think that it wasn't too bad either.

      1. My Name Is Prince

"Not too bad", why do you think Walker pushed Sterling in the first place? Cause he knew it would make scoring maybe even a tiny bit more difficult, wishing the referee would let him off the hook... And the referee did... Pathetic refereeing of course... Mariner should be sacked for the obvious reasons....

And making scoring a bit more difficult in football by using your hand is, as you already know, forbidden(!!!) and doesn't fit the idea of the game at all.... It might fit American football, I have know idea....

Yea might be the wrong choice of words to express what I meant to say here (sorry for my bad English), but I think something like this happens all the time, pulling on the shirt, a little push. This one was quite obvious but since Sterling has the reputation to get on the ground as soon as someone is just near him, Mariner might have reasoned that the push didn't really have an impact. Fwiw, I thought it was a penalty as well but since it was Sterling, I can understand him not giving that penalty, and I don't really mind, hope players like Sterling and Neymar would dive a bit less if they know their reputation might be a factor.

I don't like the divers either... However, I don't think it's fair either to not give a clear penalty just based on reputation. The only fair way of refereeing football would be video refereeing, so that instant replays would be utilized to achieve more correct refereeing... That way they would make it easier to catch the divers too and give them the yellows they deserve.

Yea totally with you on that one mate! Makes it easier for the referees as well, since people seem to forget they don't have those replays to watch and have to make an instant decision.

If City defended properly they would have won the game, penalty or no penalty. They've only got themselves to blame for not getting 3 points. Especially when Spurs finished the game with a CB pairing of Wanyama and Dier.

I agree. They can count themselves lucky that Spurs had a bad day at the office in attack as well as defence. City did play well though going forward.
