Diego Costa returns to the Chelsea starting line-up with a goal as Eden Hazard’s toils continue. Alexis Sanchez leaves it late against Burnley, and Southampton’s differential midfielders are in the goals against a lacklustre Leicester City.

On The Rise

Diego Costa
Returning to the starting line-up after recovering from a back problem, the Spain international was quick to resume his outstanding season by grabbing the opener at home to Hull City.

Among the top ten Fantasy Premier League captains for Gameweek 22, only Costa and Alexis Sanchez managed to find the net, as the former maintained the remarkable levels of consistency that have now served up points in 16 of 20 league appearances under Antonio Conte.

Sold by more than 298,000 FPL managers ahead of the weekend, Costa has dropped from 11.0 in Gameweek 17 to 10.3 as a result of those injury doubts but today’s heroics, allied with another poor showing from Eden Hazard, is likely to spark significant interest ahead of Gameweek 23.

Gary Cahill
A third goal of the season, supplemented by Chelsea’s twelfth clean sheet in 16 Gameweeks since moving to a 3-4-3 formation, saw the centre-half climb above team-mate Marcos Alonso to the top of the FPL defender standings.

Granted, Alonso’s failure to start a match until Gameweek 7 is a major factor here – with a goal, assist or clean sheet in 14 of his 16 starts, the summer signing remains top for points per match (6.5) for defenders.

However, Cahill’s eye for goal suggests that he may be a better option than Cesar Azpilicueta for those looking to double up on Conte’s resilient rearguard. The Spaniard has yet to find the net this season and has received just one bonus point in the last three matches that have featured a Blues shut-out.

Mesut Ozil
The playmaker’s improved creative output continued earlier today as he teed up Shkodran Mustafi for Arsenal’s opener against Burnley.

Having accumulated a massive 19 assists in the previous campaign, Ozil had struggled for form over the opening few months and mustered just three assists in the opening 17 Gameweeks.

Today’s output means that the German international now supplied an assist in each of his last three Premier League appearances and with Watford, Hull City and Leicester City paying visit in the next six, Ozil remains a Gunners differential with just 7.2% ownership.

Alexis Sanchez
Having fired 17 attempts on goal in his previous two home outings with Olivier Giroud leading the line, there was no real surprise to see Sanchez lead this week’s Captain Poll.

With both Giroud and Ozil subbed off towards the end, the Chilean was somewhat fortunate to benefit from penalty duties, stepping up to slot home a last-gasp winner.

Again, Sanchez offered a significant threat throughout, firing eight efforts on goal against the Clarets. He has now scored or assisted in nine of the previous ten rounds of fixtures.

Nonetheless, today’s converted spot-kick was the first time in his last four home appearances that he has found the net – food for thought, perhaps, for his 37% FPL owners ahead of visits from Watford and Hull in the next three.

Dusan Tadic
We handed the Serbian a spot in this week’s Differentials after he fired more attempts on goal than any player in the previous round of fixtures.

Tadic’s converted spot-kick – a first goal since Gameweek 6 and only his second of the season – added to an assist against West Brom over the last four rounds of fixtures.

Having started each of the last four, Tadic looks to have strengthened his spot in Claude Puel’s first XI at a time where Charlie Austin and Sofiane Boufal remain on the sidelines through injury.

With clashes against Swansea City, West Ham, Sunderland and Watford over the next five Gameweeks, the playmaker has the fixtures to at last offer some consistency.

Jay Rodriguez, James Ward-Prowse
It’s three goals in six Gameweeks now for Rodriguez after today’s first-half effort at home to Leicester.

Back in the central striker role, the FPL midfielder served a reminder of his out of position potential in the absence of Charlie Austin as Shane Long dropped back to the bench.

Yet Puel’s penchant for rotating his first XI is likely to ensure we steer clear of Rodriguez for now. With the Saints still alive in both domestic cup competitions, the former Burnley man has started back-to-back league matches (Gameweek 17-18) just once all season.

Fellow scorer Ward-Prowse, on the other hand, has now been named in the Saints’ line-up in eight of the last ten Gameweeks.

Priced at 5.0 to Rodriguez’ 6.3, Ward-Prowse has also chipped in with two assists over that period and created more scoring chances for team-mates than any Saints player, thanks to his lion’s share of dead-ball duties.

Maya Yoshida
The Japan international has now started seven straight matches in all competitions and was even handed the armband by Puel for the midweek cup win over Norwich City.

With Jose Fonte off to West Ham and Virgil van Dijk limping off early in the second period, Yoshida’s importance to the Saints’ cause seems to be growing with every Gameweek.

This afternoon’s result was the first time in seven league matches that Southampton have kept a clean sheet with Yoshida in the first XI, yet, at a price of just 4.2, he could prove value for money if the St Mary’s side can take advantage of their schedule.

Andre Gray, Ashley Barnes
In spite of a dire away record that had harvested three goals in their first nine away matches, Sean Dyche kept faith with a front two once again for the Emirates encounter.

Coming in a 6.2 in FPL, Gray’s converted penalty took his tally to five goals in as many matches for the Clarets, highlighting his value for money in a weekend where the similarly-priced Andy Carroll and Fernando Llorente bagged a brace apiece.

Barnes, meanwhile, has now started six successive league matches and has produced two goals and as many assists over that period.

At a price of 4.5, he’s now challenging the likes of Peter Crouch as the budget forward of choice as the Lancashire side prepare to face Leicester, Watford, Hull and Swansea in the next five Gameweeks.

In Decline

Eden Hazard
The Chelsea winger went into this afternoon’s match as the fifth most-captained player in the Gameweek, with 7.6% of managers handing him the armband.

Once again, he disappointed. A blank at home to Hull means that Hazard has scored just two goals and as many assists in the last 11 Gameweeks, with only one of those strikes arriving from open play.

Compare that to the form that served up seven goals and three assists in the opening 11 rounds of fixtures and it’s easy to see why he’s the second most transferred out midfielder in the Gameweek.

Hector Bellerin
Having returned from training earlier in the week, Arsene Wenger suggested that the right-back “should” be available for the visit of Burnley.

While Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny atoned for a lack of defensive returns with a goal and assist respectively, Bellerin was surprisingly consigned to bench-warming duties as Gabriel retained the right-back berth.

It’s likely that Wenger was simply showing caution with the Spaniard’s fitness after a recurrence of his ankle injury, yet at a price of 6.5, his 15.9% owners will be in two minds whether to hold, given the output of premium alternatives available at Chelsea, Spurs and now Everton.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Will deffo be on TV so it won't be at 3pm on the Saturday - is just a matter of when it will be moved to (could still be Saturday, but lunchtime or teatime). They probably won't announce the TV games for May for a good while yet though, which doesn't really help you.

The first thing is that the defence is under-invested but not much you can do with 0.3 banked. I'd think about switching Amat for Fernández, he will help with the rotation.

The main issue is Giroud, he was always a short-term punt, right? Unless you see him keeping his place long-term? I don't. He's OK next week but either needs to leave in GW24 or GW26 in my view.

So I'd save FT I think. Then have 2 available in GW24 and make a decision then. Giroud to Barnes and De Roon to Alli/Eriksen maybe?

I really need liverpool to get though in the EFL cup v saints. If they don't, I will have aguero, Ibra, jones, Alexis and Kos all blanking in Gw26.

@Jarvish.... If all the favs win in the FA cup this weekend we will be no closer to knowing what to expect in terms of Gw28 blanks, right? Other than slight % changes based on the draw for next round? But, if some favs lose we will have a clearer picture?

Some more games may be confirmed as definitely not being blanks for GW28 as teams get knocked out. The %s will change (some dramatically), but they should be a lot more reliable as the only consideration will be whether a team(s) will win their 5th round tie or not (rather than at the moment where the percentages are based on a) if they will win their 4th round tie, and b) if they will win their fifth round tie as well against a currently unknown opponent - could be Chelsea, could be Sutton Utd!)

There’s also going to be the debate about whether total carnage in the PL fixtures is going to be good or bad for “us” against rivals who are more “casual”. A lot of people’s instinct is that it is bad as it messes up their team, but in reality it should be good as if our teams are messed up as well as our “casual” rivals’ teams, we should have the foresight and knowledge to prepare better to limit the damage in comparison to our rivals who are likely to be caught by surprise, which should be a much bigger advantage then if the fixtures tick along with the minimal of changes.

its sad that the term long ball is now synonymous with 'poor football' .Karanka was complaining about the fans demanding it at middlesbrough as if doing it would bring them all out in a rash. When you see rooney or hazard or alonso make those beautiful sweeping passes from right to left or vice versa over the weekend thats essentially a long ball in that it was 'hit long' and went right to the player.not an easy thing to do. if its done repeatedly and aimlessly then fair enough (the same could have been said about the continual sideways passing at united under LVG). but to continually use the term takes away from the fact that a long pass is an amazing bit of skill (as it is in the NFL) that you dont want to see disappear from the game

    1. gunner 2727
      • 10 Years

a lovely cross field ball doesn't fit into the "long ball" game. that term is simply based on long defence to attack balls, usually to a big fella up top, and used because you've accepted their midfield or tactics are better than yours. a 50 yard cross baller usually has to be to feet and is great to watch.

A manager should ignore the fans and do what's best for his team to win points. The opposition can often dictate the style of play. No point in pragmatic long ball when you have Shane Long against Huth and Morgan. But Negredo is a big tough savvy forward. Providing you have someone who can actually time and make a long ball dropping in on top of Àlvaro is a good plan B.

NFL long ball is a bit different. Practised constantly the runner knows exactly where the ball will drop when the ball leaves the quarterback's hand. I think in football it's not as precise, more off-the-cuff and more skilful.

I saw enough to make me think Jesus's might end up playing further forward than kun. With kun assuming a slightly deeper role, albeit behind Jesus's. This with kdb and sterling on the flanks looks to me to be city's best hope of recovering their below average form. This would utilise the electric pace of Jesus as kun could turn provider as well. I shall hold kun though until I see evidence of this and the next few fixtures are favourable.

I honestly didn't think they were very good, jesus was the highlight of the city team besides debruyne.

At 2-0, city really hadn't really made many well structured attacks on spurs, it was purely off keeper mistakes that they were winning, and then couldn't shut the game down.
The result has disguised how really poor city are at the moment.
        My thoughts anyway.

        1. MTPockets
          9 years, 5 months ago

Perhaps on goals, but I think they dominated. Whether that's flattering City or reflection of poor Spurs play is debateable. West ham lost 5-0 to city in the cup couple of weeks ago, and if form's anything like saturday there's a risk lanzini/antonio won't get much at all. But yeah we'll see.

I think Alli and Eriksen are worth considering too. I'm probably opting for Ibra this week though.

Kane for me. Mainly as I watched Arsenal yesterday and Sanchez looked a bit off the boil, often quite far away from the box when the ball came in. Kane however is in the center for Spurs and I actually think Sunderland is the weaker team out of Sun/wat/hul.

    2FT

    Heaton
    Jones Rose Baines
    Sanchez Erickson Hazard Stanislas Phillips
    Ibra Giroud

    Jaku Brunt Chambers Crouch

What shall I do with my transfers, thinking of downgrading hazard to either coutinho or alli then upgrading Giroud to lukaku! Any thoughts?

Southampton midfielders worth a look? Considering putting Redmond or Ward-Prowse - any suggestions?

depends of needs of the team, but brunt for me has held my team together. also how he got one point bonus is beyond me, goal and cleaner. still also a solid chance when evans is back that he plays wing

Not really sideways when one is not playing and the other is scoring points

Have fpl released their article detailing why Sanchez lost those other 2 bonus?

He gives the ball away too much and too many offsides / shots off target.

yeah passing was awful, usually when tight the attacking players lose bps as obviously have harder passes and therefore reduced passing stats when changed at the end.

Guys, any changes would you recommend to this team for a hit?

    Grant
    Walker / Jones / Brunt
    Sanchez / Lallana / Alli / Philips
    Kane / Giroud / Ibra
    (Pickford / Alonso / Fletcher / Amat)

No hit required there, great team.

Read somewhere Anfield was quiet was one of the factors Pools lost it to Swansea. Even the away fans with "where's your famous atmosphere" chant. True?

        Against mid-low table teams?

Could be. Main reason is Pool's defenders cannot defend.
